Newsbreakers

October 25, 2009

Joe Saunders didn't last long in his final start of the 2009 season. He was chased in the fourth inning after allowing three runs, and the Yankees went on to win 5-2 to clinch the ALCS.

Our View:

Saunders was staked to a 1-0 lead in the third inning but gave it back and then some in the fourth. He allowed seven hits and five walks in just 3.1 innings, and one has to wonder why Mike Scioscia didn't pull him sooner.

October 24, 2009

According to the Twitter page of the New York Post's Joel Sherman, MLB officials are in discussion with the Yankees and the Angels about whether to call Game 6 before the gates open due to weather.

Our View:

There is a 90 percent chance of rain tonight, and MLB is considering just pushing the game back before everyone gets to the park. We will keep you updated as they day goes on, but don't be shocked if this one gets rained out.

October 18, 2009

Joe Saunders had a solid start for the Angels on Saturday, but after a wild game that saw a little bit of everything the Halos eventually fell in 13 innings. The 4-3 loss put them in a 2-0 ALCS hole and gave the Yankees a very cushy situation.

Our View:

Saunders allowed just two runs on six hits and a walk over seven innings. He fanned five, but didn't receive a decision for his efforts. The Angles are in trouble, but none of the blame should be directed at Saunders, who did everything the team asked of him.

October 4, 2009

Joe Saunders earned his 16th victory in the Angels regular season finale on Sunday. He allowed two runs on six hits and three walks over five innings in a 5-3 win over the A's.

Our View:

The win total for Saunders is nice, but fantasy owners were likely expecting a better ERA than the 4.60 mark he wound up with. Last season he posted a 3.41 showing, but that season is looking more and more like an aberration.

September 27, 2009

Joe Saunders held the A's to three runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings on Sunday, and improved to 15-7 with the 7-4 win.

Our View:

Saunders hasn't been all that impressive this season, but has turned it on in September, going 4-0 with a 2.78 ERA. He has now totaled 32 wins over the last two seasons.

September 21, 2009

Joe Saunders only allowed two earned runs on seven hits over 8.1 innings in Monday's 5-2 win over the Yankees at Angel Stadium. He had no walks with three strikeouts, and both runs came on solo homers.

Our View:

Saunders earned his 14th win of 2009, and is 5-0 over his last six starts. He has allowed two or less earned runs in each outing over that span as well.

September 16, 2009

Joe Saunders gave up five runs (only two earned) on eight hits over 5.2 innings in Wednesday's 9-8 loss at Boston. He had three walks with five strikeouts.

Our View:

The Angels took a 7-5 lead in the top of the seventh, so Saunders took a no-decision rather than a loss. Saunders was 4-0 over his previous four starts heading into tonight, and allowed two or less earned runs in each outing over that span.

September 11, 2009

Joe Saunders only surrendered one earned run on three hits over seven innings in Friday's 7-1 win over the White Sox at Angel Stadium. He had one walk with three strikeouts.

Our View:

Saunders collected a win in each of his last four starts, and is 13-7 for 2009. He trimmed his ERA to 4.81 as well.

September 6, 2009

Joe Saunders allowed 11 baserunners in just 5.1 innings on Sunday, but more importantly allowed only two runs, as the Angels beat the Royals 7-2.

Our View:

Saunders is now 12-7 with a 4.97 ERA in 2009. He likely won't be starting any playoff games for the Angels this fall.

August 31, 2009

Joe Saunders only surrendered three hits over seven scoreless innings in Monday's 10-0 win at Seattle. He had three walks with four strikeouts.

Our View:

Saunders was in control as he claimed his 11th win of 2009. He is now 2-0 over two starts since returning from the DL (shoulder tightness).

August 26, 2009

Joe Saunders only surrendered two earned runs on four hits over five innings in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Tigers at Angel Stadium. He had two walks and six strikeouts.

Our View:

This was a solid performance for Saunders in his first start back from the DL (shoulder tightness). He earned his 10th win of 2009, and trimmed his ERA to 5.27.

August 26, 2009

Joe Saunders has been activated from the 15-day DL following his recovery from tightness in his left shoulder, according to TSN. Shane Loux was designated for assignment to make room on the roster.

Our View:

He started Wednesday's game against Detroit. He is not pitching as well as he did in 2008 when he won 17 games with a 3.41 ERA, as he is currently 9-7 with a 5.33 ERA.

August 22, 2009

Joe Saunders (left shoulder tightness), who has not pitched since August 7, could return next Thursday against the A's, according to the Orange County Register.

Our View:

That would have him taking Sean O'Sullivan's spot. In 23 starts this season, Saunders is 9-7 with a 5.33 ERA.

August 21, 2009

MLB.com reports that Joe Saunders could return to the Angels rotation as soon as next week.

Our View:

Saunders is recovering from left shoulder stiffness and threw a successful simulated game on Friday. He is slated to have another session on Sunday or Monday and will be reevaluated after that. He's currently 9-7 with a 5.33 ERA in 23 starts this season.

August 18, 2009

Joe Saunders is progressing from stiffness in his left shoulder, but Angels' skipper Mike Scioscia does not expect him to come off the DL Sunday in Toronto, according to MLB.com. Scioscia said, "He made major strides Monday in his long toss. You make sure you have got a couple of days of that and see how you respond. Then you get to flat ground and the mound. We hope by the end of the week he is on the mound."

Our View:

Saunders is close, but will need to throw a bullpen session or two before returning to the Angels' rotation. Scioscia is hopeful Saunders will return soon, and shall remain stashed in AL-only leagues.

August 8, 2009

The Angels have placed starter Joe Saunders on the 15-day DL with tightness in his left shoulder, according to the OC Register. In a corresponding move, the team recalled pitcher Jose Arredondo from Triple-A.

Our View:

Saunders came out of the game last night because of the injury, and apparently he has been pitching with it for most of the season. No word yet on who will take his place in the rotation, but likely candidates include Shane Loux and Matt Palmer.

August 1, 2009

Joe Saunders gave up four earned runs on nine hits over six innings in Saturday's 11-6 win at Minnesota. He had one walk and two strikeouts.

Our View:

Saunders snapped a six-game skid without claiming a win, and improved to 9-6 for the season. He has allowed four or more earned runs in each of his last seven starts, and is only worth employing in deeper fantasy leagues though.

July 22, 2009

Joe Saunders was roughed up for six earned runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings in Wednesday's 9-6 win at Kansas City. He had two walks and two strikeouts.

Our View:

Saunders had a terrible outing, and should be happy he ends the night with a no-decision rather than a loss. He is winless over his last five starts, and allowed five or more earned runs four times over the span. He should only be considered in deeper AL-only leagues for his next trip to the mound.

July 18, 2009

Joe Saunders was hit with another loss on Friday as the Angels fell to the A's by a score of 7-3. Saunders went six innings and allowed four runs on six hits while walking six and striking out two.

Our View:

Saunders has been bad lately, and he really needs to pick it up if the Angels are going to stay on top of the division. He has the stuff, but right now he is not a good fantasy option. Stay away if possible going forward.

July 11, 2009

Joe Saunders was bad on Friday, five earned runs in five innings, but Joba Chamberlain was worse, as the Angels beat the Yankees 10-6 at home.

Our View:

Saunders hasn't been good for the better part of a month now, and is really more of a spot starter than roster filler. There are better options out there.

July 5, 2009

Joe Saunders was torched for six runs (five earned) on seven hits over 5.1 innings in Sunday's 9-6 win over the Orioles at Angel Stadium. He issued three walks with two strikeouts, and gave up two homers.

Our View:

Saunders had a disastrous outing, and should be happy he was dealt a no-decision rather than a loss. He was a disappointment after only allowing one earned run against the Rockies in his last start.

June 30, 2009

Joe Saunders was gunned down for eight earned runs on six hits over a mere 3.2 innings in Tuesday's 9-5 loss at the Rangers. He had five walks and two strikeouts, and gave up four homers.

Our View:

Saunders suffered his worst loss of the season, and should remain an erratic fantasy hurler. He allowed four or more earned runs in four of six starts in June.

June 25, 2009

Joe Saunders enjoyed a strong outing in Wednesday's 11-3 win over the Rockies at Angel Stadium, as he only allowed one earned run on four hits over six innings. He had one walk and fired six strikeouts.

Our View:

He nailed down his team-leading eighth win of the season, and is back on track after giving up four earned runs against the Dodgers in his last start.

June 20, 2009

Joe Saunders gave up four earned runs on six hits over 6.1 innings in Friday's 5-4 win over the Dodgers at Angel Stadium. He had three walks, four strikeouts, and was tagged for two homers.

Our View:

Saunders did not pitch well, and he is lucky he was handed a no-decision rather than a loss. He remains at 7-4 for the season, with four of his wins coming on the road.

June 13, 2009

Joe Saunders was in command in Saturday's 9-1 win over the Padres at Angel Stadium, as he only allowed one earned run on eight hits over 8.1 innings. He had one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View:

Saunders is back on track after going winless over his previous three starts. He now leads the Angels with seven wins, with three coming at home.

June 7, 2009

Joe Saunders had a tough outing in Sunday's 9-6 loss at Detroit, as he gave up four earned runs on seven hits over six innings. He had five walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:

Saunders has now gone three straight starts without a win, and allowed 10 earned runs over his last two outings. He still leads the Angels with six wins, and should remain active in fantasy lineups.

June 2, 2009

Joe Saunders was rocked for six earned runs on nine hits over 5.1 innings of work in Tuesday's 6-4 loss at Toronto. He had no walks with four strikeouts.

Our View:

Saunders has lost two straight starts, and gave up five or more runs for the third time this season. He still holds a 3.77 ERA, and has been solid overall.

May 27, 2009

Joe Saunders pitched pretty well on Tuesday, but he was hit with the loss as the Angels fell to the White Sox 4-2. Saunders went 6.2 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out four.

Our View:

Saunders is now 6-3 on the year, but he has pitched very well. He is one of the better fantasy pitchers in baseball, and he should continue that going forward. He is a strong play in all leagues, so keep him going.

May 22, 2009

Joe Saunders tossed seven shutout innings en route to his sixth win of the season on Thursday. He allowed just four hits and three walks as the Angels blanked Seattle 3-0.

Our View:

Saunders has been solid this season and stepped up with a lot of big arms on the DL for the Angels. Today's start lowered his ERA to 3.17 and he's had a quality start in six of his nine outings this season.

May 16, 2009

Joe Saunders got roughed up the the Rangers on Friday, going 5.1 innings and allowing seven runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out four.

Our View:

Saunders has been very good this season, so this one bad start is nothing to worry about. He is an elite fantasy pitcher, so don't read too much into this start.

May 13, 2009

According to MLB.com, Joe Saunders' start has been pushed back to Friday.

Our View:

The Halos just want Saunders to get an extra day of rest after throwing a complete game his last time out. Adjust your lineups accordingly.

May 9, 2009

Joe Saunders out pitched Zack Greinke on Saturday and earned his fifth win with a complete game shutout of the Royals. He allowed just five hits and a walk and struck out six.

Our View:

Saunders is now 5-1 and has been the ace that the Angels desperately needed to step up with all their injury woes. He's been stellar with a 2.66 ERA and just 11 walks in 47.1 innings this season.

April 28, 2009

Joe Saunders got the win on Tuesday, but was a shaky in doing so. He allowed four runs (two earned) on ten hits and a walk over just six innings of the Angels' 7-5 clipping of the Orioles, and wound up with the victory.

Our View:

Saunders is now 3-0 with a 3.41 ERA this season, and despite allowing 11 hitters to reach base on Tuesday has a sparkling 1.09 WHIP in his previous four starts. The Angels are counting on him to be the ace until their money arms get healthy. So far he's doing alright.

April 23, 2009

Joe Saunders was hit hard in the Angels' loss to the Tigers on Wednesday. Saunders went five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with two walks and only one strikeout.

Our View:

Saunders has been the ace of the Angels' depleted staff so far in 2009, and this one outing is an anomaly. Saunders is very good and will continue to be a quality fantasy pitcher.

April 16, 2009

Joe Saunders was excellent against the Mariners on Thursday, notching the win after giving up one run off three hits and one walk with three strikeouts in seven innings.

Our View:

While Saunders wasn't great in his second start against Boston, he's looked excellent in his other two. He'll never be a great strikeout guy, but it appears that his All-Star year in 2008 may not have been a total fluke and that he could again be good for a nice number of wins with a fine ERA and WHIP.

April 11, 2009

Joe Saunders struggled against the Red Sox on Saturday, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks over seven innings. He was tagged with the loss as the Angels fell 5-4.

Our View:

Saunders was great in his first start this season, but took a step back on Saturday. His low K-rate is a concern as well. He has only struck out four batters in his 13.2 innings this season.

April 10, 2009

The Angels have decided to move Joe Saunders' start up to Saturday against Boston after the postponement of their game on Thursday due to the tragic death of Nick Adenhart, according to the Orange County Register.

Our View:

The Angels have elected to skip Shane Loux's turn in the rotation for now, going with Saunders on Saturday and Dustin Moseley on Sunday. After an off day, they'll go with Loux, Jered Weaver, Saunders and Moseley before deciding on a replacement for the late Adenhart next Saturday. The Angels are still waiting on the returns of John Lackey, Ervin Santana and Kelvim Escobar, all of whom could be back by the end of the month.

April 6, 2009

Joe Saunders tossed 6.2 shutout innings as the Angels defeated the Athletics 3-0 on Monday. He allowed three hits and two walks, while striking out two hitters.

Our View:

Saunders will never be a strikeout pitcher, but he knows how to add to the win column. He won 17 games last season, but it may be difficult for him to reach that mark again.

April 3, 2009

Joe Saunders threw 40 pitches during a bullpen session Thursday, and feels ready to go for opening day, according to the Los Angeles Times. He has been dealing with a tired arm earlier in camp.

Our View:

Saunders wants to pitch the opener, but skipper Mike Scioscia is yet to name the starter.

March 14, 2009

Joe Saunders allowed three hits, one walk, and no runs, while striking out one in Saturday's 6-4 win over the Cubs.

Our View:

Saunders managed to win 17 games last season, but few of his peripherals indicate that he is due to be so successful once again. He his fairly hittable and does not strike out many hitters.

March 10, 2009

Joe Saunders is still dealing with residual effects related to the shoulder tightness that hindered him earlier in spring camp, according to the LA Times.

Our View:

He does not believe the ailment is serious. The Angels cannot afford to lose another pitcher with Ervin Santana expected to miss the start of the season.

March 4, 2009

Joe Saunders threw two scoreless innings against South Africa, allowing two hits and striking out three. He did not walk a man.

Our View:

Saunders' shoulder didn't appear to be bothering him as he cruised on Wednesday. He is a solid fantasy starter and should be able to come close to last year's numbers if he remains healthy.

February 23, 2009

Joe Saunders is experiencing a bit of tightness in his throwing shoulder, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Our View:

Saunders didn't appear to be too concerned about the discomfort. "It happens every year, something gets sore, nothing is hurt," said Saunders. "Last year it was my elbow. This year it's my shoulder's turn, I guess." Still, there is plenty of reason for fantasy owners to be concerned about a repeat of his All-Star season from last year.

January 23, 2009

Joe Saunders has decided not to represent Team USA in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, according to HalosHeaven.com.

Our View:

The lefty received his invite late and believes he is only at 80 percent and not ready to go. Teammate John Lackey will not be participating either.
