Newsbreakers

August 20, 2009

Chris Duncan has been released by the Red Sox, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:

Duncan was acquired in the trade that shipped shortstop Julio Lugo to St. Louis, but he failed to see any action with the Sox, as he only hit .188 over 92 plate appearances with Triple-A Pawtucket. Boston still has a player to be named or cash considerations coming in that trade.

July 23, 2009

According to the Boston Globe, the Red Sox have optioned newly acquired outfielder Chris Duncan to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Our View:

Not only is there no room to put Duncan at the major league level right now, but the Sox likely want him to get some seasoning in Triple-A to see if he can bust out of his current 1-for-31 slump. If Duncan is recalled at some point, it's hard to imagine his as more than a bat off the bench.

July 22, 2009

According to Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Chris Duncan has been traded to Boston Red Sox for Julio Lugo. Boston will also get a player to be named later or cash.

Our View:

This move makes sense for the Cardinals on nearly every level. Duncan is mired in a prodigious slump, with just one hit and one total base in the month of July, and the Cards were in dire need of a major league caliber infielder. The Red Sox are reportedly paying the bulk of Lugo's hefty remaining salary, as well, so this is a big win for the Birds on Bat no matter how you look at it.

July 22, 2009

According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the Cardinals have optioned slumping outfielder Chris Duncan to Tripple-A Memphis.

Our View:

Duncan's struggles have been beyond miserable this month. He has exactly one hit and one total base in July, and currently has no business playing at the major league level. Due to his amount of major league service time though, Duncan had to agree to the demotion. The Cardinals made the move move late Tuesday night and infielder Brian Barden is expected to be called up before Wednesday's game. Duncan will not be missed in fantasy formats.

July 21, 2009

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa says struggling outfielder Chris Duncan has been receiving "unfair" treatment from fans and the media, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

The dubious comment came in response to reporters' questions about why TLR pinch hit Chris Duncan in a tight game in the ninth inning on Tuesday. Duncan promptly grounded into a game-ending double play. He has one hit in 27 at-bats in July, and only one home run since May 26.
