Updating an earlier report, Andy Marte has been designated for assignment by the Indians, according to TSN.
Marte has failed to impress during his time with Cleveland this season, as he holds a .221 average over 122 at-bats.
MLB.com is reporting that Indians' prospect Andy Marte will not play at third base for the team for the rest of the season. Marte has been playing at first base for the team since being called up, but his original position is at third.
Marte has struggled each time he has been given a chance to play at the major league level, and apparently the Tribe doesn't feel the need to make room for him anymore. Jhonny Peralta moved from short to third earlier this season, and he will be taking the playing time at the hot corner for the rest of the season.
Andy Marte went 1-for-4 with a solo homer off Scott Baker in Saturday's 4-1 loss to Minnesota at Progressive Field.
The Indians only had four hits in the game, and Marte was their lone source of scoring. Marte was in need of a solid performance, as he was hitless over his previous three games (11 at-bats). He has two homers this month, and five for the season.
Andy Marte hit his second home run in three games on Saturday, as the Indians won 5-3 in Baltimore.
Marte has now driven in 12 runs in his past ten games, and is certainly worth a flier in all AL-only formats.
Andy Marte has been officially recalled from Triple-A Columbus.
Marte should see a significant amount of playing time at first base, and be monitored in most formats, particularly in AL-only leagues.
Andy Marte is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday to take the roster spot of the recently traded Ryan Garko, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.
Marte is a disappointing .211 career hitter in 513 at-bats, but is still believed to have a good deal of potential. In 82 games at Triple-A this season, he is batting a robust .327 with 18 home runs and 66 RBI. If he finally shows signs of life in the majors this time, he could be someone to take a flier on in all formats.
Terry Pluto of the Cleveland Plain Dealer believes that the Indians should recall Andy Marte and give him a chance to play third for the team on a regular basis. Pluto states in the article that Jhonny Peralta has struggled all season, and the team may be better off with Marte at third for the rest of the year.
Marte is having his best minor leage season so far in 2009, and Peralta ranks near the bottom of the league in most offensive categories. A promotion for Marte would also mean prospect Wes Hodges could play every day at third in Triple-A, another positive aspect of the move. Don't be shocked if the Indians give Marte a chance as they fall further and further out of contention, but his past major league performance indicates he will not make much of a splash.
Andy Marte has cleared waivers with the Indians and he will be outrighted to Triple-A Columbus, according to MLB.com.
Wes Hodges is expected to get most of the starts at third with Columbus, so Marte will likely see time at first and as a DH. The former top prospect currently holds no fantasy value for 2009.
MLB.com reports that third baseman Andy Marte was placed on waivers on Monday. Teams will have until Wednesday to claim him. Otherwise, he will likely land on the Indians' Triple-A team.
Marte was once considered a strong prospect at his position, but he has consistently failed to take advantage of his opportunities. He was playing every day after Casey Blake was dealt last season, but he eventually lost those starts to Jamey Carroll. Of all AL players with at least 250 at-bats, only Jose Molina had a worse OPS than Marte last season. Regardless, he's just 25 and plays strong defense, meaning some teams may attempt to claim him by Wednesday.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer believes the Twins and Giants could garner interest in Andy Marte.
The Indians have nine days to either trade, release or outright him after designating him for assignment on Thursday. The Giants could use depth at third, but the Twins look to be set with a platoon of Brendan Harris and Brian Buscher.
Andy Marte has been designated for assignment by the Indians, according to MLB.com. He was moved to make room on the roster for veteran reliever Juan Salas, who was acquired in a trade with the Rays.
Marte has failed to play up to high expectations with the Indians so far, and was not expected to make a fantasy impact in 2009.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that third baseman Andy Marte's time may be coming to a close. He is out of options and figures to be the odd-man out with Mark Derosa taking over at third base.
The Indians may elect to keep the 25-year-old on the roster just because they will not want to risk losing him. However, he has only hit .219 with 48 RBI in 150 games with the Indians. He did finish 2008 on a high note. In his final 34 games he hit .291 with seven doubles and 11 RBI.
