Newsbreakers

November 8, 2009

Reed Johnson would likely have to take a pay cut to return to the Cubs in 2010, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

Something a soon-to-be 33-year-old journeyman outfielder would not be wise to do. Expect Johnson to go wherever the most dollars are at this point in his career.

September 21, 2009

Reed Johnson has been activated from the 15-day DL following his recovery from a fractured left foot, according to the Sports Network.

Our View:

Johnson could see playing time as the Cubs need depth in their outfield, but is just an option for NL-only leagues. He is batting .252 with four homers and 20 RBI over 147 at-bats this season.

August 17, 2009

Reed Johnson (broken foot) is expected to be activated in time for the Cubs series at home against the Nationals next week, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View:

He is slated to go out on a rehab assignment later this week, and will return for sure next week as long as everything goes well. In 147 at-bats for the Cubs this season, the reserve outfielder is hitting .252.

July 30, 2009

Reed Johnson was officially placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken foot on Thursday.

Our View:

Johnson will be out at least a month. Look for the Cubs to scour the market for a fourth outfielder before Friday's trading deadline.

July 29, 2009

Reed Johnson will miss at least a month after breaking his left foot on Wednesday, according to the Chicago Tribune. No corresponding roster move has been announced.

Our View:

This is not news the Cubs needed. At all. Reed's second stint on the DL in the last two months now necessitates even more playing for the middling Milton Bradley and Kosuke Fukudome. Expect the Cubs to now ramp up their efforts for a bat (with Josh Willingham as a distinct possibility).
