Newsbreakers

November 13, 2009

The Rangers reportedly inquired about Rays' outfielder B.J. Upton, according to Buster Olney's (ESPN) twitter page.

Our View:

Texas asked about Upton during their off-season routine, but talks are not believed to be ongoing. Upton would not come cheap, even following a disappointing 2009 campaign.

October 2, 2009

B.J. Upton had a big night at the plate in a 13-4 win over the Yankees at Tropicana Field, as he went 5-for-5 with six RBI and three runs scored. He hit two singles with a double, triple and a two-run homer off Jonathan Albaladejo.

Our View:

Upton was a big disappointment in 2009, but looked great tonight in his bid to end the season on a high note.

October 2, 2009

USA Today baseball writer Bob Nightengale is reporting on Twitter that several teams have been scouting Rays' center fielder B.J. Upton. The feeling around the league is that the Rays will trade Upton this winter.

Our View:

Upton has massive amounts of potential, but he has failed to put it all together for an entire season. He has battled injuries and slumps, but he showed in last year's postseason that when he does what he is capable of, he can be an elite player. If the Rays do move him, they better get plenty in return for the young player with all the tools to become a star.

September 23, 2009

B.J. Upton carried the Rays in tonight's 5-4 win over the Mariners at Tropicana Field, as he went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Both of his knocks were singles.

Our View:

Upton committed a throwing error, but made up for it with a strong performance at the plate. He is hot as he recorded two hits in each of his last three games.

September 22, 2009

B.J. Upton was productive in tonight's 4-3 loss to the Mariners at Tropicana Field, as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Both of his knocks were singles.

Our View:

Upton has two hits in each of his last two games, but still holds an anemic .190 batting average this month. The loss tonight eliminated the Rays from the postseason race.

September 21, 2009

The Chicago Tribune's Phil Rogers speculates that since the Rays are "sold" on outfield prospect Desmond Jennings, they will for sure trade either B.J. Upton or Carl Crawford this offseason.

Our View:

Despite Upton's woeful 2009 season, .233 average, ten home runs, 43 RBI and 13 caught-stealings, he is still the more likely of the two to be moved. He is just 25, and not yet signed to a big contract. Should he be made available, there will be lots of interest.

September 19, 2009

According to the St. Petersburg Times, B.J. Upton is not in Saturday's lineup against the Blue Jays.

Our View:

Worry not owners. Upton is healthy. The Rays just wanted to mix up the lineup due to the fact that they're facing lefty Ricky Romero. Ben Zobrist gets the start in center in Upton's place.

September 13, 2009

According to MLB.com, Rays' outfielder B.J. Upton told manager Joe Maddon that he wants to play in both games of the doubleheader on Sunday. Maddon called that plan ambitious and said he wants to see Upton run full speed before making a decision.

Our View:

Upton was supposed to be out until Monday, but he seems determined to get in there today. It still seems unlikely that he will start both games today, but it looks more and more likely that he plays at least one.

September 12, 2009

Contrary to a previous report, Rays' outfielder B.J. Upton says he will probably play Sunday, according to the Twitter page of beat writer Marc Topkin. Upton said his ankle injury is feeling much better.

Our View:

Upton must be feeling much better, because it was thought that he wouldn't be ready to play until Monday at the earliest. If he does play tomorrow, he will likely only play in one of the two games.

September 11, 2009

Rays' skipper Joe Maddon expects B.J. Upton to remain out of the lineup through the weekend, and potentially longer, according to Marc Topkin's (St. Petersburg Times) twitter page. He is recovering from a left ankle injury.

Our View:

Ben Zobrist will roam in center field with Akinori Iwamura covering second base during their series at Boston.

September 8, 2009

B.J. Upton is not in the Rays' lineup for their Tuesday night game against the Yankees. He will be replaced in the outfield by Ben Zobrist.

Our View:

Upton started the second game of the doubleheader last night, but apprently the ankle is a bit tender today. He is not looking like a reliable fantasy option down the stretch, so if you have someone else you should look to keep Upton on the bench until he proves he can get in the lineup daily.

September 7, 2009

B.J. Upton has confirmed that he will be 100 percent ready to go for the second game of Monday's doubleheader with the Yankees, according to the Twitter page of beat writer Marc Topkin. Upton has been out with an ankle injury since last week.

Our View:

Bossman Jr. is not in the Rays' lineup for Game 1, but he has said for a few days that he would start in Game 2 tonight. Upton owners should feel free to get him in for the night game if you need him, but if you have another option on the bench it might be best to give Upton a day or two.

September 4, 2009

B.J. Upton is progressing well in his recovery from a sprained left ankle, and he is expected to return to the Rays' lineup either Sunday or Monday, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:

Fernando Perez will roam in center field in Upton's place tonight against the Tigers at Tropicana Field. The Rays start a series against the AL East rival Yankees Monday.

September 3, 2009

B.J. Upton left Thursday's game in the fifth inning after colliding with Carl Crawford in the outfield. Upton has been diagnosed with a left ankle sprain, and he is beng considered day-to-day. Ben Zobrist moved to the outfield, while Aki Iwamura came off the bench to play second base.

Our View:

Upton walked off the field under his own power, so hopefully this injury isn't anything serious. We will keep you updated on his status for tomorrow, so check back.

August 18, 2009

B.J. Upton helped lead the Rays in tonight's 5-4 win over Baltimore at Tropicana Field, as he went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. He hit a triple and a solo homer off Jason Berken.

Our View:

Upton was in need of a solid performance at the plate, as he held an anemic .163 average over 43 at-bats this month heading into tonight's game. He snapped a 37-game drought without a homer as well.

August 3, 2009

B.J. Upton is not in the Rays' lineup for their Monday afternoon game against the Royals. Upton will be replaced by Willie Aybar in center field.

Our View:

Upton is just getting a day off in preparation for the Rays' big two-game series against the Red Sox starting on Tuesday. Upton has been hot and cold this season, but his speed makes him a must play in all leagues even when he is struggling a bit.

July 18, 2009

B.J. Upton went 3-for-5 with an RBI in Saturday's 4-2 win at Kansas City. All three of his knocks were singles.

Our View:

Upton has five hits over his last two games, and ended a five-game skid without an RBI.

July 3, 2009

According to the Tampa Tribune, Rays outfielder B.J. Upton has been named the AL Player of the Month for June. Upton batted .324 with five home runs, 20 runs scored, 22 RBI, 14 stolen bases, and ten doubles to earn the award.

Our View:

Upton has been destroying everything thrown at him in June, and he was the obvious choice here. The numbers just go to show you what he is capable of, and assuming he stays healthy he could very well do this all season.

June 28, 2009

B.J. Upton had another big day for the Rays on Sunday as they defeated their interstate rival Marlins 5-2. Upton went 2-for-4 with a home run, a stolen base, two runs scored, and an RBI.

Our View:

Upton has showed what he is capable of in the month of June, and now that he is healthy it is likely we will see this for the rest of the season. Bossman Junior can fill the stat sheet with power and speed, and he is quickly becoming the fantasy force many have expected him to be over the last two seasons.

June 26, 2009

B.J. Upton carried the Rays offensively in tonight's 7-3 win over the Marlins at Tropicana Field, as he went 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. He hit two doubles, and also swiped a base.

Our View:

Upton continues to perform very well in June, as he carries a .326 batting average with three homers, 18 RBI and 12 stolen bases. He should remain productive as long as he stays intact.

June 22, 2009

According to the official Twitter page of Major League Baseball, Rays' outfielder B.J. Upton has been named the AL player of the week. Upton hit .429 last week with two homers and an AL best nine RBI.

Our View:

Upton put the exclamation point on his week in Sunday's game against the Mets by going 4-for-6 with four RBI and three runs scored, so he seems to be a good choice for player of the week. Upton owners should hope he continues to hit like this, because he has largely been a disappointment so far this season.

June 21, 2009

B.J. Upton carried the Rays in Sunday's 10-6 win at the Mets, as he went 4-for-6 with four RBI and three runs scored. He had two singles, a double and a two-run homer off Bobby Parnell.

Our View:

Upton has a four-game hitting streak and collected his third homer of June. He only hit two total homers over the previous two months of the season, and is finally generating some power for fantasy owners.

June 19, 2009

B.J. Upton was productive in Friday's 5-3 loss at the Mets, as he went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. He hit a double and a single. Upton also swiped a base, his 26th of the season.

Our View:

Upton is hot as he notched multiple hits in four of his last five games. He has finally found his swing after only hitting .218 in May and .177 in April.

June 15, 2009

B.J. Upton's two steals on Sunday made him the first player in team history to steal two bases in three straight games according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:

Upton has been highly active on the base paths this season, swiping 24 bags, good for third in the American League, but struggling everywhere else. The 24-year-old outfielder is batting just .218 with three home runs and 15 RBIs. You shouldn't be rash and drop him, but unless you need speed, you might want to consider benching him until he returns to form.

June 3, 2009

B.J. Upton was 2-for-4 with a stolen base, a double, a walk, a run scored, and two RBI as the Rays defeated Kansas City 9-0 on Wednesday.

Our View:

Upton is showing signs of breaking out of his slump as he is riding a seven-game hitting streak. He has multiple hits in three of those games. He is also on pace for 56 stolen bases...and 200 strike outs.

May 16, 2009

B.J. Upton hit a home run for the second straight game on Saturday as the Rays beat the Indians 4-2. Upton was 1-for-4 on the game with the homer, run, and an RBI.

Our View:

It's almost time to get excited, Upton owners. Home runs in back-to-back days after only one home run the rest of the season is almost enough to believe a healthy B.J. is back. If this trend continues, Upton could be one of the biggest fantasy performers in the league this season. It's still a little early to tell, but it's ok to be excited.

May 15, 2009

B.J. Upton broke out on Friday for the Rays, going 3-for-5 with a double, two runs, an RBI, two stolen bases, and a walk-off homer in Tampa Bay's 8-7 win over the Indians.

Our View:

This is what Upton can do. He can steal bases by the ton, hit for power, and generally fill up the box score. He has been battling injury all season, but if he can put together more games like this he can finally live up to all his fantasy potential.

May 8, 2009

B.J. Upton is penciled into tonight's lineup at Boston after sitting out Thursday's game with flu-like symptoms, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:

He will roam center field and bat leadoff. Upton is only hitting .157 so far this season, but should be fine to return to fantasy lineups.

May 7, 2009

B.J. Upton sat out Thursday's win over the Yankees due to an illness, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

The illness is not a big concern, and Upton should be back sooner rather than later. Too bad for his fantasy owners he missed out on the beatdown the Rays gave the Yankees tonight.

April 23, 2009

B.J. Upton is expected to be in Thursday's lineup at Seattle, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:

He will start as long as his strained quad is not too sore. This is good news, but expectations should be tempered as Upton is a career .253 hitter over 26 games against the Mariners, with just one homer. Safeco Field is among the toughest places to hit in the majors.

April 22, 2009

B.J. Upton will be back in the lineup for the Rays Wednesday night against the Mariners, according to the St. Petersburg Times. He had been out with tightness in his right quad.

Our View:

Upton was questionable for tonight's game, but he is apparently good to go. His quad is feeling better and he is more comfortable with running on it. Feel free to put him in the lineup tonight, but his stolen base capability may be in question for the next couple of games.

April 21, 2009

The St. Petersburg Times reports that B.J. Upton was out of the lineup again on Tuesday and he is not yet comfortable with pushing off of his right leg. He left Sunday's contest with tightness in his right quad. He said that he would test it again on Wednesday and that there is no way he would need to go back on the DL.

Our View:

The injury may slow him up on the basepaths until he is 100 percent. The good news is it doesn't look like he will miss an extended period of time, but he remains a very risky play for Wednesday.

April 19, 2009

B.J. Upton made an early exit from Tampa Bay's contest on Sunday, leaving in the second inning due to tightness in his right quad, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:

He was replaced by Gabe Kapler. At the moment, Upton's injury does not appear to be anything serious; it thankfully was not his shoulder, and it was expected that it might take his legs a bit of time to get in game shape as he just recently returned to action.

April 13, 2009

B.J. Upton returned to the lineup in Monday's 15-5 win over the Yankees. He went 1-for-3 with three walks, two stolen bases, and two runs scored while hitting leadoff for the Rays.

Our View:

An already dangerous Rays' lineup gets even more lethal with Upton in the mix. He got off to a quick start in trying to match his 44 steals from last season, but he won't get to run against Jorge Posada every night. His offseason shoulder surgery is also expected to cure his lack of power from last season when he hit just nine home runs.

April 13, 2009

The St. Petersburg Times reports that B.J. Upton has been activated from the DL and will start in center field and hit leadoff on Monday against the Yankees. Upton has yet to play this season as he has been rehabbing from offseason shoulder surgery.

Our View:

There are a lot of expectations of Upton this season, who disappointed many owners last season when he was limited to just nine home runs and a .401 slugging percentage. His shoulder is believed to be 100 percent and he could possibly triple his home run production from 2008.

April 4, 2009

MLB.com reports that B.J. Upton plans to be active for the Rays' home opener on April 13 against the Yankees. He is recovering from a November shoulder surgery.

Our View:

Upton has already taken part of a few spring games, but the shoulder is not ready to go just yet. He is among the more talented outfielders in the game and could double his total of nine home runs from last season.

March 30, 2009

B.J. Upton (shoulder) played five innings on Monday going hitless in four trips to the plate, according to the Tampa Tribune. Upton commented after the game that he could have played seven innings if the club wanted him to.

Our View:

Upton still hopes to return to action by the end of the second week of the season from his shoulder injury. He is being drafted as if he is fully healthy often going within the first 25 selections in mixed leagues, though it has to be admitted that such a draft position would appear to offer little in the way of upside given his uncertain health status.

March 26, 2009

In a minor-league rehab game, Rays outfielder B.J. Upton got on base three times with a hit and two walks, and he also stole two bases, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:

Upton is recovering from shoulder surgery. Whether or not he is 100 percent healthy for Opening Day is still a question mark at this point, but he seems to be progressing well.

March 22, 2009

The Associated Press reports that outfielder B.J. Upton will likely miss the start of the regular season after being hit in the hand with a pitch on Saturday.

Our View:

Upton initially feared the hand may have been broken, but he said he felt better Sunday and thinks he can play in a minor-league spring training game in a few days. Still, manager Joe Maddon is exercising caution and won't rush Upton back in time for opening day on April 6.

March 21, 2009

B.J. Upton is headed for X-rays after being struck by a pitch on the left hand during today's minor league game, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:

He was hit on the bottom of his pinkie, but is expected to be OK, but it could still delay his rehab from shoulder surgery, which may compromise his availability for opening day.

March 21, 2009

B.J. Upton fared fine while serving as a DH Thursday in a minor league game, and his surgically repaired left shoulder felt good, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:

Upton will roam center field for three innings and have three at-bats in a minor league game today. Barring a setback, he could begin playing in big league games with the Rays by the middle of next week.

March 7, 2009

B.J. Upton took batting practice for the first time this spring on Saturday, according to the Tampa Tribune. He is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery and Joe Maddon says he is still on pace to be ready by opening day or shortly after.

Our View:

There's a real possibility that Upton is not 100 percent on opening day and the team would be wise to give his shoulder as much time as needed to return to health.

February 17, 2009

B.J. Upton's recovery from November shoulder surgery has been going great and believes he may be ready to play for opening day, according to the St. Petersburg Times. He said, " I would say no timetable, because the way it is feeling there is no telling."

Our View:

His torn labrum compromised his power early in the 2008 season, but he potentially gave a preview of great things to come while crushing seven homers in October. He is worth drafting as a top-10 fantasy outfielder, especially following this news.

February 12, 2009

B.J. Upton, who is recovering from left shoulder surgery, felt good after taking swings off a tee, according to the St. Petersburg Times. He will now begin soft toss drills Friday. He said, "It is feeling better. There is no reason to hold it back."

Our View:

Upton could be on the verge of a breakout campaign in 2009 if he proves to be healthy. His torn labrum compromised his power early in the 2008 season, but he potentially gave a preview of great things to come while crushing seven homers in October.

January 14, 2009

B.J. Upton is expecting to miss the first week of the 2009 campaign while recovering from left shoulder surgery, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Upton said, "It's coming along a lot faster that we thought it would but at the same time we can't rush it."

Our View:

He is going to be careful with the injury, and noted that cold weather could be an issue with it. Upton should have plenty of time to post solid numbers next season, and should not be avoided in drafts due to missing the first week and spring training.
