Newsbreakers

November 13, 2009

The Rangers reportedly inquired about Rays' outfielder B.J. Upton, according to Buster Olney's (ESPN) twitter page.

Our View:

Texas asked about Upton during their off-season routine, but talks are not believed to be ongoing. Upton would not come cheap, even following a disappointing 2009 campaign.

October 2, 2009

B.J. Upton had a big night at the plate in a 13-4 win over the Yankees at Tropicana Field, as he went 5-for-5 with six RBI and three runs scored. He hit two singles with a double, triple and a two-run homer off Jonathan Albaladejo.

Our View:

Upton was a big disappointment in 2009, but looked great tonight in his bid to end the season on a high note.

October 2, 2009

USA Today baseball writer Bob Nightengale is reporting on Twitter that several teams have been scouting Rays' center fielder B.J. Upton. The feeling around the league is that the Rays will trade Upton this winter.

Our View:

Upton has massive amounts of potential, but he has failed to put it all together for an entire season. He has battled injuries and slumps, but he showed in last year's postseason that when he does what he is capable of, he can be an elite player. If the Rays do move him, they better get plenty in return for the young player with all the tools to become a star.

September 23, 2009

B.J. Upton carried the Rays in tonight's 5-4 win over the Mariners at Tropicana Field, as he went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Both of his knocks were singles.

Our View:

Upton committed a throwing error, but made up for it with a strong performance at the plate. He is hot as he recorded two hits in each of his last three games.

September 22, 2009

B.J. Upton was productive in tonight's 4-3 loss to the Mariners at Tropicana Field, as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Both of his knocks were singles.

Our View:

Upton has two hits in each of his last two games, but still holds an anemic .190 batting average this month. The loss tonight eliminated the Rays from the postseason race.
