Newsbreakers

September 26, 2009

Jhonny Peralta led the Indians to a 9-8 walk-off win over the Orioles on Saturday with a 3-for-5, two-RBI performance.

Our View:

Peralta is looking down the barrel of his lowest homer total in a full season for his career. He has just 11 so far, but has eased the sting for fantasy owners with 80 RBI.

September 12, 2009

Jhonny Peralta paced the Indians on Saturday night, going 2-for-4 with four RBI, as Cleveland routed Kansas City 13-6 at home.

Our View:

Peralta has quietly driven in 77 runs this season, putting him on pace to surpass his career high of 89 from last year.

September 4, 2009

Jhonny Peralta led the Indians in tonight's 5-2 win over the Twins at Progressive Field, as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. He hit a single and a double.

Our View:

Peralta is performing well right now, as he has a hit in six of his last seven games, with five RBI over the span.

August 23, 2009

Jhonny Peralta went 2-for-4 with two RBI on Sunday, and also homered off of Felix Hernandez, as the Indians won 6-1 at home.

Our View:

The home run was his first since July 28. After getting off to a dreadful start this season, Peralta now boasts a solid triple crown line of .278/10/67.

August 18, 2009

Jhonny Peralta was productive in tonight's 5-4 loss to the Angels at Progressive Field, as he went 2-for-4 with two singles and two RBI.

Our View:

Peralta has a four-game hitting streak, with four RBI over the span. He is hitting .306 over 62 at-bats this month as well, and is worth penciling into fantasy lineups while hot.

August 1, 2009

Jhonny Peralta went 1-for-4 with a single and two RBI in tonight's 4-3 loss to the division rival Tigers at Progressive Field.

Our View:

Peralta hit .296 with 20 RBI last month, and is off to a good start in August. He is worth employing in fantasy lineups while hot.

July 26, 2009

Jhonny Peralta hit a grand slam on Sunday, helping Cliff Lee and the Indians breeze by the Mariners 12-3.

Our View:

It was only Peralta's seventh home run of the reason. Once an excellent fantasy shortstop, you have some explaining to do if he is on your team in a 10-12 team mixed league.

July 8, 2009

Jhonny Peralta was responsible for the Indian's lone tally in their 5-1 loss to the White Sox on Wednesday. He hit a solo home run off of Jose Contreras in the sixth inning. It was his only hit on the day.

Our View:

For a shortstop valued for his ability to hit the long ball, Peralta is a fantasy disappointment this season. He now has just six homers and isn't contributing much in other categories either with his .254 average and 36 RBI.

July 6, 2009

Jon Heyman of SI.com is reporting that the Indians may be willing to listen to offers for shortstop Jhonny Peralta. The team is said to be looking for young pitching in return for any player traded.

Our View:

Peralta has had a bit of a disappointing season after a hot spring, but he could probably pull in a decent return for the Tribe if they were to trade him. Look for the Indians to try to make several more moves before the deadline, as they appear to be sellers this season.

July 5, 2009

Jhonny Peralta only got one hit on Sunday, but it was a solo homer in the Indians' 5-2 loss to the A's. Peralta went 1-for-4 with the homer, a run scored, and an RBI in the game.

Our View:

The Indians didn't get much going today against A's starter Gio Gonzalez, but Peralta did manage to go deep. He is a decent fantasy shortstop in AL-only formats, but probably not in mixed leagues.

June 23, 2009

Jhonny Peralta carried the Indians offensively in Tuesday's 5-4 win at Pittsburgh, as he went 2-for-4 with three RBI. He hit a single and a solo homer off Evan Meek.

Our View:

Peralta has two hits in three of his last four games, with two homers over the span. Keep him active in fantasy lineups while he is hot.

June 22, 2009

Indians manager Eric Wedge recently publicly called out Jhonny Peralta, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:

"He needs to get his head on straight," the manager said of the struggling shortstop. "He can't keep trying to jerk the ball out of the park every time up. He's no baby. He's been up here four or five years. He's going to have to figure it out." Wedge is upset because Peralta is batting just .255 with only three home runs in 2009 after batting .276 with 23 last season. If you are a Peralta owner, there could be better options available in almost every format.

June 3, 2009

Jhonny Peralta was 3-for-5 with three RBI, a run scored, and a home run in Wednesday's 10-1 win over the Twins.

Our View:

Peralta has mixed in two three hits with four no hit outings over his last six outings. His home run tonight was just his second of the season and his first since May 1. After posting only six RBI in April, he has accumulated 18 since then.

May 31, 2009

Jhonny Peralta went 3-for-4 on Sunday in the Indians' 5-4 win over the Yankees. Peralta also added three RBIs to lead the way for the Tribe.

Our View:

It wasn't flashy, but three singles translated into three RBI for Peralta today. More importantly, one of his RBIs came in the bottom of the ninth in the form of a walk-off single.

May 12, 2009

The Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that Jhonny Peralta will see some time at third base in the next few weeks. Manager Eric Wedge is trying to shake up his struggling Indians' team.

Our View:

Under this scenario, Peralta would move to third, Luis Valbuena would move to second, Asdrubal Cabrera would move to short, and Mark DeRosa would move to first. Did you follow that? Anyway, if Peralta gains eligibility at third, his fantasy value could increase quite a bit once he starts hitting the ball.

April 25, 2009

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that Jhonny Peralta was benched on Saturday after going 0-for-14 on the Indians' current homestand.

Our View:

Peralta strained his left elbow when the Indians were playing the Yankees in New York, and he has struggled at the plate ever since. Eventually, he should be a solid run producer for the Indians, but he is slugging just .322 to start the season.

April 17, 2009

The Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that Jhonny Peralta is not in Friday's lineup for the Indians due to a sore left elbow. Asdrubal Cabrera will start at short in his absence.

Our View:

This is not a big deal. Peralta said his elbow felt a little sore during batting practice, but he is receiving treatment and is expected to be back in the lineup on Saturday. He is one of the most durable players in baseball, so don't expect this to be a regular occurrence.

March 27, 2009

Jhonny Peralta was 2-for-4 and hit his third home run of the spring Friday. He's now hitting .435 this spring.

Our View:

Peralta is having a fantastic spring and could be the big bat shortstop that everyone forgets about on draft day. You can get him late, so snatch him up. Unless you hate 20+ home runs and 80+ RBI out of your middle infielders.

March 16, 2009

Jhonny Peralta was 2-for-3 with a run scored in Cleveland's 4-1 win over Seattle on Monday. He is now hitting 15-for-26 (.577) this spring.

Our View:

Peralta is a player worth getting excited for. The shortstop was devastating out of the No. 3 role a season ago and he plays a premium position. It's uncertain what spot in the batting order he will man in 2009, but he's making a strong case to be in the three-hole with a terrific spring.

March 14, 2009

Jhonny Peralta was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a strikeout in Saturday's 8-6 win over San Diego.

Our View:

Peralta has nine RBI in 23 at-bats this spring. He will hit in the middle of Cleveland's lineup, possibly third, this season. The result could be a run at 100 RBI.

March 3, 2009

Jhonny Peralta posted a huge performance against Kansas City on Tuesday, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, a double and a home run, his second in as many games.

Our View:

While Peralta may lack the speed of most of his peers, he provides rare 20-plus home run power for a corner infielder. He's off to a hot start this spring.

March 1, 2009

Jhonny Peralta belted his first home run of the spring on Sunday and went 2-for-3 overall with a pair of runs and RBI.

Our View:

Peralta is a good source of power at shortstop, collecting 23 home runs and 89 RBI in 605 at-bats in 2008. The Indians will have more power up the middle this season now that they've added Mark DeRosa, which could up Peralta's RBI numbers even more as the the Cleveland lineup is even stronger.
