Newsbreakers

October 20, 2009

Scott Kazmir was roughed up for four earned runs on six hits over a mere four innings in Tuesday's 10-1 loss to the Yankees in Game 4 of the ALCS at Angel Stadium.

Our View:

Kazmir struggled, and the Angels are now one more loss away from elimination. They will try to climb back into the series in Thursday's Game 5, with John Lackey slated to start.

October 11, 2009

Scott Kazmir got roughed up a bit by the Red Sox on Sunday, but his team bailed him out in the late innings as the Angels completed the sweep of Boston with a 7-6 win. Kazmir went six innings and allowed five runs on five hits while walking three and striking out one.

Our View:

Kaz wasn't great today, but his team fought from behind to eliminate the Sox from the postseason. After getting eliminated so may times by Boston in recent years, it has to feel good to go into Fenway and end their season.

October 3, 2009

Scott Kazmir shut out the A's for five innings on Saturday and earned his tenth win of the season. He allowed just three hits and a walk and fanned three in the 4-2 win.

Our View:

Kazmir is now 2-2 with an ERA under 2.00 since joining the Angels and has pitched his way into the team's postseason rotation. He's been like a new man in LA after having his worst season ever while in Tampa this year.

September 29, 2009

Scott Kazmir has been scratched from tonight's scheduled start against the Rangers, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

Kazmir is not injured, and skipper Mike Scioscia just wanted to give him more rest heading into the playoffs. Sean O'Sullivan replaced him on the hill tonight.

September 23, 2009

Scott Kazmir gave up three earned runs on six hits over six innings in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Yankees at Angel Stadium. He had three walks with four strikeouts.

Our View:

Kazmir had a decent outing, but was dealt a loss due to poor run support. He allowed two or less earned runs in each of his previous five starts heading into today.

September 18, 2009

Scott Kazmir allowed six hits over six scoreless innings in Friday's 2-0 win at Texas. He had no walks with five strikeouts.

Our View:

Kazmir was in control from the hill, and now has a winning record at 9-8. He is in the zone, as he allowed two or less earned runs in each of his last five starts.

September 13, 2009

Scott Kazmir held the White Sox to just two runs on seven hits and three walks over six innings on Sunday. He fanned a pair and did not figure in the decision of the 3-2 win.

Our View:

Kazmir has looked like the pitcher of old since joining the Angels. He has notched quality starts in each of his three outings and has only allowed four total runs over 19.1 innings with the Halos. Still, he has yet to earn his first Angel victory.

September 2, 2009

Scott Kazmir shined in his Angels debut on Wednesday and deserved better than being saddled with the loss after the Halos fell 3-0 to the Mariners.

Our View:

Kazmir was out-dueled by King Felix, but still gave the Angels reason to smile with his six-inning, one-run, three-hit performance Wednesday. He fanned eight against just one walk and looks like he's finally figuring things out this season. He now has four straight quality starts.

August 29, 2009

Scott Kazmir will make his first start for the Angels this Wednesday against the Mariners, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Kazmir was tagged for seven runs in just 4.1 innings in his only start against the Mariners earlier this season, and it's hard to know just which Kazmir could show up Wednesday: the pitcher who was routinely shelled through the first four and a half months of the season, or the pitcher who has surrendered just seven runs in his past 19.2 innings.

August 28, 2009

After much flip-flopping, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports via Twitter that the Scott Kazmir deal is done. He heads to the Angels for prospects Alexander Torres, Matthew Sweeney and a player to be named later.

Our View:

Apparently no money will change hands in the deal, so it looks to be a salary dump for the Rays. The Angels will absorb the $20-plus million owed to Kazmir over the next two years. LA gets to shore up their patchwork rotation and the Rays save some cash and get a couple of so-so prospects. It still seems like a strange deal, but both teams seemed to get what they wanted. The Rays will likely replace Kazmir in the rotation with Andy Sonnanstine or Wade Davis.

August 28, 2009

MLB.com reports that the proposed trade that would have sent Scott Kazmir to the Angels for prospects Alexander Torres and Matthew Sweeney has fallen through.

Our View:

It seemed strange that the Rays would dump Kazmir for two middle of the road prospects, especially with Tampa's "ace" turning it on in his last three starts. No word on why the deal fell through, but it's likely that the Rays came to their senses and pulled the plug, seeing as how they are in the thick of the Wild Card race.

August 28, 2009

MLB.com is reporting that the Angels are close to acquiring Rays' starter Scott Kazmir. The deal would reportedly send Kazmir to LA in exchange for prospects Alexander Torres and Matthew Sweeney.

Our View:

The deal is nearly done, and it is expected to be announced later today. After Kazmir's last outing in which he allowed only one run on four hits while striking out 10, this deal looks a heck of a lot better from the Angels' perspective than it might have a few weeks ago. With all of the trouble the Halos have had in their rotation this season, a healthy Kaz would be a very nice upgrade.

August 26, 2009

Scott Kazmir only allowed one earned run on four hits over six innings in Wednesday's 3-2 loss at Toronto. He issued one walk and racked up 10 strikeouts.

Our View:

Kazmir had a strong outing, and it is a shame he was forced to settle for a no-decision. He trimmed his ERA to 5.92, and reached double digits in strikeouts for the first time this season.

August 21, 2009

Scott Kazmir held the Rangers to three runs on five hits and a pair of walks over 7.1 innings on Friday. He fanned four and earned his eighth win of the season.

Our View:

Kazmir looked to be on the way to his best start of the season, but faltered in the eighth inning allowing all three runs on the frame. Still, he got his record above .500 on the year (8-7).

August 15, 2009

Scott Kazmir gave up three earned runs on five hits over 6.1 innings in Saturday's 8-3 win over the Jays at Tropicana Field. He had three walks and seven strikeouts.

Our View:

Kazmir earned a win and evened his record to 7-7. He bounced back from his last start when he was lit up for seven earned runs over 4.1 innings at Seattle.

August 9, 2009

Scott Kazmir was lit up for seven earned runs on nine hits over a mere 4.1 innings in Sunday's 11-2 loss at Seattle. He had two walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:

Kazmir had a nightmarish outing, and now has a losing record at 6-7. That marks the seventh time this season that he allowed six or more earned runs, and hopefully he will be more consistent down the stretch for fantasy owners.

August 3, 2009

Scott Kazmir earned his sixth win of the season on Monday afternoon as the Rays defeated the Royals by a score of 10-4. Kazmir went six innings and allowed three runs and six hits while walking one and striking out five.

Our View:

Another nice outing for Kaz today, and it is starting to look like he has put his early season struggles behind him. Fantasy owners should keep running him out there while he is pitching well, and it for any reason he is available in your league you should give him a good hard look.

July 28, 2009

Scott Kazmir had a very nice evening on Tuesday as he picked up the win in the Rays' 6-2 victory over the Yankees. Kazmir went seven innings and allowed one run on five hits while walking one and striking out four.

Our View:

Kaz has been bad this season, but he made a nice case for teams looking to trade for a starter tonight. He has always had the ability, so as long as he stays healthy he could contribute nicely down the stretch. Hopefully for Kazmir owners, he can build on this start going forward.

July 25, 2009

Updating a previous report, the OC Register is reporting that the Angels are not interested in Rays' pitcher Scott Kazmir. Team officials have said that Kazmir's name has not surfaced in their meetings.

Our View:

The Rays have been scouting the Angels' far system, but it may not be Kazmir that the Angels are interested in. The Rays have a plethora of left-handed relief pitchers, and the Halos may be interested in acquiring one of them. At any rate, it looks like Kaz to the Angels is dead.

July 24, 2009

The Rays have been scouting the Angels' minor leaguers, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.

Our View:

The Angels have interest in Scott Kazmir, and the Rays may be watching their minor leaguers to line up a trade. Kazmir holds a disappointing 6.69 ERA over 14 starts this season, but could benefit from a fresh start with the Angels, and could ultimately help their push for a pennant in the AL West.

July 23, 2009

Ed Price of MLB Fanhouse suggests that the Rays could deal Scott Kazmir.

Our View:

The Rays are believed to be interested in Roy Halladay, Victor Martinez and Cliff Lee, and could trade Kazmir to clear payroll. He is making $6MM this season, and has $22.5MM left on his contract. The Rays would also have to part with top prospects in their farm system to acquire any of the aforementioned elite players, and this news is merely speculation.

July 23, 2009

Scott Kazmir got lit up again on Thursday. The struggling former ace allowed five runs on five hits and three walks over six innings. He fanned five, allowed one home run and took the loss.

Our View:

It really wouldn't have mattered if Kazmir had allowed just one run on one hit. He would have taken the loss anyway, due to the fact that the pitcher opposing him, Mark Buehrle, tossed a perfect game. Kazmir has been unlucky this season, but he's also been very bad. He's now 4-6 with a 6.69 ERA and looks like a shell of the pitcher that many believed to be one of the best in the AL last season.

July 22, 2009

Updating a previous report, Scott Kazmir will indeed make his start on Thursday, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:

Kazmir left his last start with cramps in his forearm, but the team didn't feel the injury was serious enough for him to miss a turn in the rotation. Turns out they were right. He will take the hill against the White Sox on Thursday. He has been a risky start this season, but he's always a decent bounce back candidate if you want to play him.

July 18, 2009

Updating an earlier report, Scott Kazmir does not expect to miss his next start after exiting tonight's game at Kansas City early, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:

He was forced out due to cramps likely caused by dehydration, and skipper Joe Maddon is also optimistic that Kazmir will be fine to take his next scheduled turn in the rotation Thursday at Chicago.

July 18, 2009

Scott Kazmir suddenly exited tonight's game at Kansas City in the seventh inning after throwing some warmup pitches, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Grant Balfour replaced him on the hill. It is uncertain if Kazmir suffered an injury. Stay tuned for updates.

July 8, 2009

Scott Kazmir was ripped up again on Wednesday, this time at the hands of the Blue Jays. He allowed seven runs on nine hits and two walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision as the Rays eventually won in walk-off fashion 10-9.

Our View:

Will the real Scott Kazmir please stand up? Where is the dominant strikeout machine from a year ago? One of the league's budding young superstars in 2008, Kazmir has yet to find his groove in '09. He's now 4-5 with an in"convenient" 7.11 ERA. Just sit him.

July 3, 2009

Scott Kazmir allowed just one earned run over five innings, but couldn't get any help offensively. He allowed five hits and one walk, while striking out six in the Rays 3-1 loss to the Rangers. He fell to 4-5 on the season.

Our View:

Kazmir is still one of the most talented pitchers in the game right now. It looks like he's starting to figure things out again after returning from the DL. Keep starting him as he;ll likely get better each time out.

June 27, 2009

Scott Kazmir looked solid in his first start since coming off his month-long DL stint with a strained right quadriceps, picking up a no decision after giving up two runs off four hits and one walk with five strikeouts in five innings.

Our View:

Don't even bother looking at Kazmir's ERA or WHIP the rest of the year, as he was literally too awful over the first month and a half to ever make up for the discrepancy this season. Still, he's been a very effective starter the previous three seasons and remains one of the most talented young lefties in the league, so there's every reason to believe he'll be a fine fantasy starter going forward as long as he stays healthy.

June 27, 2009

Scott Kazmir has been activated from the DL following his recovery from a strained right quadriceps, according to the Associated Press. The club optioned Andy Sonnanstine to Triple-A Durham to make room on the roster.

Our View:

He is slated to return to the rotation Saturday against the Marlins. He held a solid 0.84 ERA over 10.2 innings during his rehab assignment, and should be fine to employ in fantasy lineups for his first game back with Tampa Bay.

June 26, 2009

According to the St. Petersburg Times, Rays' starter Scott Kazmir will return to the rotation this weekend and pitch either Saturday or Sunday. No word yet on who he will replace, but it will likely be either Jeff Niemann or David Price.

Our View:

Kaz looks to be ready to go, and the Rays feel cofortable plugging him back into the rotation this weekend. David Price owners need to be on lookout, since he is scheduled to pitch Sunday and may get bounced after his last disappointing start.

June 23, 2009

Scott Kazmir feels that he is ready to return to the Rays' rotation following his bout with a strained right quadriceps, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:

The Rays' brass will determine later tonight whether to give Kazmir the green light to return, or if he needs one more rehab outing.

June 22, 2009

Scott Kazmir only allowed one run on five hits over six innings in his second rehab start with Triple-A Durham Monday, according to the St. Petersburg Times. He had five strikeouts and issued no walks. Kazmir is recovering from a right quadriceps strain.

Our View:

55 of his 78 pitches landed for strikes, which is encouraging while he works on rebuilding his mechanics. He should be nearing his return to the Rays, and shall remain patiently stashed on fantasy rosters.

June 21, 2009

According to the St. Petersburg Times, Rays' injured and struggling ace Scott Kazmir will make a rehab start in Triple-A Durham on Monday.

Our View:

Kazmir, who has been battling a right quad strain and mechanical flaws in his delivery, will face off against Red Sox prospect Clay Buchholz. The Rays will make a decision on Kazmir after the start and decide if he's ready to return to the team.

June 18, 2009

Scott Kazmir, who is recovering from a right quadriceps strain, is slated for a bullpen session Friday, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Barring a setback, Kazmir will make a rehab start with Triple-A Durham Monday. Kazmir may return to Tampa Bay before the end of next week.

June 17, 2009

Scott Kazmir threw 64 pitches in 4.2 scoreless innings in in a minor league rehab outing on Wednesday, allowing three hits, walking one and striking out five. He is recovering from a quad strain.

Our View:

Kazmir will have at least one more rehab outing before rejoining the Rays. He was grossly ineffective through his first nine starts of the season, but he still has the potential to make a significant fantasy impact. Once he learns how to be a more efficient pitcher, he could begin to dominate.

June 14, 2009

The St. Petersburg Times reports that Scott Kazmir will start for Single-A Charlotte on Wednesday. He has not pitched since May 22, but he was awful in his first nine starts of the season.

Our View:

Kazmir had 29 walks against only 35 strikeouts in his first 45.2 innings this season. His problems seem to begin and end with his control. Expect him to make three or four or maybe even more rehab starts before rejoining the Rays.

June 12, 2009

FoxSports.com is reporting that Rays starter Scott Kazmir threw a 44 pitch, three inning simulated game on Friday. Kazmir expects to begin a rehab assignment next week in Single-A Charlotte.

Our View:

Kazmir has been working on his mechanics as much as he is trying to get his arm into shape, and he is expected to spend a decent amount of time on his rehab assignment in the minors. If he gets healthy and gets the kinks figured out, he could be worth a hard look in all leagues. It would probably be wise to monitor his progression in the minors for the next few weeks.

June 3, 2009

Scott Kazmir (strained right quad) is throwing another bullpen session on Wednesday according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:

Rays manager Joe Maddon said on Tuesday that he was encouraged by Kazmir's progress and that he expects the hard throwing lefty to be back before the all-star break. This is good news for Kazmir fantasy owners. What won't be is if he comes back in the form that has led him to a 7.69 ERA thus far this season.

June 2, 2009

Skipper Joe Maddon has been encouraged by the progress of Scott Kazmir in his recovery from a strained right quadriceps, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:

The ace hurler's leg is feeling better, and he is working through some things mechanically. The club laid out a program for Kazmir to begin working his way back to the diamond, which could include more bullpen sessions this week, and perhaps a simulated game. Kazmir is getting closer to coming back.

May 25, 2009

Rays' skipper Joe Maddon has received a three-year contract extension that goes through 2012, according to ESPN. Financial details were not disclosed.

Our View:

Maddon was named the AL manager of the year in 2008 while leading the Rays to the World Series and a 97-65 mark in the regular season. The Rays are currently four games out of first place in the AL East with a 23-23 record.

May 22, 2009

The St. Petersburg Times is reporting that the Rays have placed Scott Kazmir on the 15-day DL with a right quadriceps strain. Kazmir is 4-4 with a 7.69 ERA on the year.

Our View:

Kazmir has been awful this season, so a trip to the DL may be the best thing for him and his fantasy owners. Maybe he can turn his season around, but right now he is just not very good. If you have a DL spot open, put him on. If not, you may want to find someone else.

May 20, 2009

Scott Kazmir was very bad again on Wednesday as the Rays fell to the A's 7-6. Kazmir went 4.1 innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out three.

Our View:

It may be time to ditch Kaz at this point. His ERA is at 7.69 for the season, but his record is still at 4-4. He may rebound as the season goes on, so if you can afford to it may be a good idea to keep him on the bench to give him a chance. If you can't, find another option because he is killing fantasy owners every time he takes the mound.

May 15, 2009

Scott Kazmir had another rough outing on Friday, but the Rays managed to come back and beat the Indians 8-7. Kazmir went 3.1 innings and allowed seven runs on ten hits while walking four and striking out 2.

Our View:

Kaz is really starting to struggle on a regular basis, and he has fantasy owners scratching their heads. Where is the Kaz everyone has come to expect? Until he finds his way back, it may be a good move to keep him on the bench or find another option. He still has the stuff to be dominant, so it may be worth it to hold on to him, but right now he is killing owners.

May 4, 2009

Scott Kazmir got roughed up by the Orioles on Monday, allowing six runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings. He walked two and struck out seven.

Our View:

Strikeouts weren't a problem for Kaz, but giving up runs was. Kazmir has been hot and cold this year, but he should turn things around when the rest of his team does the same.

April 29, 2009

Scott Kazmir gave up eight runs, six earned, as the Rays were beat 8-3 by the Twins on Wednesday. He gave up nine hits and four walks, while striking out four in four innings of work.

Our View:

This marks his second four inning outing in his last three starts. Kaz also has just 21 strikeouts through five starts which is well below what was expected.

April 25, 2009

Scott Kazmir picked up his third win of the season on Friday, going six innings while not allowing a run. He only surrendered two hits and he walked three while striking out two.

Our View:

Kazmir has been very good this season, and he showed tonight that he can be very good without striking hitters out. He only sat down two hitters, but he also only gave up two hits. Kazmir has very high value right now, and when the Rays get on track he will be even better.

April 18, 2009

Scott Kazmir got knocked around on Saturday and was tagged with his first loss of the season as the Rays fell to Chicago 8-3. He allowed six runs on five hits and six walks over four innings before getting yanked.

Our View:

Kazmir has all the talent in the world, but his control failed him today. The six walks doubled his total in his two previous starts combined. This isn't typical Kazmir, so we don't expect the control issues to continue. Chalk this up to a bad game.

April 13, 2009

Scott Kazmir will make his second start of the season today against the visiting Yankees.

Our View:

The Rays' ace lefty only allowed one earned run in his season debut, and he holds a 2.51 ERA over 12 career games (11 starts) against the Yankees, who are 3-3 so far this season.

April 8, 2009

Scott Kazmir earned his first win of the season Wednesday as he tossed six innings of one-run ball to beat the Red Sox 7-2. He allowed five hits and three walks and struck out four.

Our View:

Not the strikeout outing fantasy owners were hoping for, but the win is nice. Kazmir threw 111 pitches and went deep into counts with a lot of hitters, but he was still effective throwing 68 strikes. Expect his strikeout rate to return to form soon.

April 3, 2009

Scott Kazmir pitched well in his final spring tuneup Friday against the Phillies at Citizen Bank Ballpark. He went just three innings but did not allow a run and surrendered only two hits.

Our View:

Kazmir had but one strikeout, but he excelled at being around the plate. He threw 48 pitches, 32 of which were strikes. If he can pitch more to contact and thus extend himself more, he will become one of the top five most valuable starters in all of baseball.

March 29, 2009

Scott Kazmir allowed two runs on four hits in six innings Sunday against the Reds.

Our View:

Kazmir was solid in 27 starts a season ago, posting 12 wins, 166 strikeouts, and a 3.49 ERA. Barring injury, he should be one of the more valuable AL starters this season, and could be exceptional if he could extend some of his outings and cut down on the home runs allowed.

March 19, 2009

In his third start of the spring on Thursday, Scott Kazmir allowed eight hits, a walk, and four earned runs while striking out two in four innings of work. He allowed two home runs, one to Rick Ankiel and the other to Ryan Ludwick.

Our View:

Kazmir didn't have his best stuff today, and the Rays would have liked for him to last longer than four innings. However, with Kazmir they are used to him running his pitch counts high early on in games as he battles nearly every hitter for a strikeout. His 9.81 K/9 rate is exceptional, but he would be more valuable if he could get to the seventh inning more regularly.

March 14, 2009

Scott Kazmir allowed five hits in four innings while striking out three and giving up one earned run in Tampa Bay's 3-1 win over the Reds on Saturday.

Our View:

For a starter, Kazmir's 9.81 K/9 rate is devastating. However, it's also reflected on the high number of pitches that he regularly throws per inning. His 4.14 BB/9 rate is rather scary, and he would benefit greatly from exercising more control. He has ace stuff, but he often finds himself out of games prior to the seventh inning.

March 9, 2009

Scott Kazmir allowed one earned run on three hits over two innings of work in Monday's 4-3 loss to the Twins, with no walks and one strikeout.

Our View:

Kazmir is capable of pitching like an ace when healthy, namely in the strikeouts department, but he is not a safe fantasy pick as he has a poor track record with arm injuries.

February 17, 2009

Scott Kazmir will not pitch for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

The Rays wanted him to bow out of the WBC due to the fact that he missed 44 games last season with arm problems. If Kazmir is healthy, he is one of the better strikeout options in the game, averaging almost ten k's per nine innings.

January 15, 2009

Scott Kazmir has been named to Team USA for the World Baseball Classic, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Kazmir is one of the best strikeout pitchers in the game, but he has not been a picture of health during his career. He had arm problems last spring, and more may lie ahead with an aggressive approach in order to get ready in time for the WBC.
