Newsbreakers

September 23, 2009

Scott Hairston is out of tonight's lineup against Texas while nursing a sore hip and SI joint, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

Hairston is day-to-day, and skipper Bob Geren is not currently planning on shutting him down for the rest of the season.

September 6, 2009

Scott Hairston's seventh inning grand slam was the difference on Sunday, as the A's beat the Mariners 5-2 at home.

Our View:

The home run was only Hairston's second since August 14th. He is batting just .235 since getting traded to the A's in early July.

August 19, 2009

Scott Hairston is out of tonight's lineup against the Yankees to rest his sore quad, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

Skipper Bob Geren opted to hold Hairston out as the A's are off Thursday, hence giving him two days to rest.

August 17, 2009

Scott Hairston went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and a run scored in tonight's 3-0 win over the Yankees at McAfee Coliseum.

Our View:

Hairston accounted for two of Oakland's six hits in the game. Hairston has multiple hits in four of his last five games, and is worth penciling into fantasy lineups while hot.

August 12, 2009

Scott Hairston led the way for the A's on Wednesday in their 6-3 win over the Orioles. Hairston went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI in the game.

Our View:

Hairston continues to keep his surprise season going, and he has been a nice addition to the A's lineup since coming over from San Diego. He has 14 homers, and he is a solid AL-only option, and he might even be worth a look in deeper mixed leagues.

August 11, 2009

Scott Hairston went 1-for-4 with a solo homer off David Hernandez in tonight's 3-2 loss at Baltimore.

Our View:

Hairston has a hit in three straight games, and collected his 14th homer of the season. He needs three more homers to tie his season-high of 17, set in 2008 with San Diego.

August 7, 2009

Scott Hairston led Oakland in tonight's 9-4 win at Kansas City, as he went 2-for-5 with three RBI. He hit a single and a double.

Our View:

Hairston has an RBI in four straight games, with eight total RBI over the span. He is worth penciling into AL-only lineups while hot.

August 5, 2009

Scott Hairston led the Athletics in tonight's 7-5 win over Texas, as he went 1-for-3 with a homer and three RBI.

Our View:

Hairston snapped a nine-game skid without a homer, and has 13 for the season. He was in need of a solid outing, as he was only batting 1-for-14 over four games in August heading into tonight.

August 1, 2009

The A's hope that outfielder Scott Hairston (quad) will return to the lineup on Saturday, but it's not a given. "The earliest would be [Saturday]," manager Bob Geren informs MLB.com. "If not, probably the following day." Hairston has missed four straight contests.

Our View:

Fantasy owners with daily transactions should plan on using a different option on Saturday. Hairston hasn't been hitting well enough (.250 in July) to earn the benefit of the doubt.

July 22, 2009

Scott Hairston helped lead the A's in Wednesday's 16-1 win over Minnesota at McAfee Coliseum, as he went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. He hit two singles and a three-run homer off Glen Perkins.

Our View:

Hairston was in need of a solid performance, as he was only batting .233 in July heading into today's game. He snapped a nine-game skid without a home run as well.

July 18, 2009

After being hit in the left wrist by a pitch on Friday night, Scott Hairston won't get any X-rays yet, but is very unlikely to play Saturday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

However, the team said if the wrist continues to remain sore, he could undergo X-rays soon. Rajai Davis should start in his place today, and will get the bulk of the playing time should Hairston be out a while.

July 7, 2009

Scott Hairston went 1-for-4 with a solo homer off Josh Beckett in tonight's 5-2 loss at Boston.

Our View:

Hairston hit his 11th homer of the season, and his first as a member of the Athletics. He started the game in center field, and looks to be a good fit with Oakland.

July 5, 2009

Scott Hairston was reportedly dealt from San Diego to Oakland in exchange for two minor-leaguers and a player to be named later, according to the Padres' twitter page.

Our View:

The names of the minor league players involved are yet to be disclosed. Hairston is hitting .307 with eight stolen bases and should be a solid addition to the A's outfield.

July 2, 2009

Scott Hairston was productive in Thursday's 7-2 loss to the Astros at Petco Park, as he went 2-for-4 with an RBI. He hit a single and a double, and also swiped a base.

Our View:

Hairston raised his batting average a few points to .314, and is riding a five-game hitting streak. He continues to lead the Padres with eight stolen bases as well.

June 29, 2009

Scott Hairston went 1-for-4 with a double in tonight's 3-1 loss to the Astros at Petco Park.

Our View:

The Padres only registered two hits in the game against opposing hurler Roy Oswalt. Hairston had a decent performance in a terrible night for the Padres, and he is hitting .309 for the season.

June 28, 2009

Scott Hairston led the way for the Padres on Sunday in their 2-0 win over the Rangers. Hairston went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, a run scored, and two RBI in the win.

Our View:

There wasn't much offense to be seen on Sunday, as Hairston provded all of it for the Padres. His fantasy value is pretty solid right now, so if you are in need of an outfielder he may be a nice addition. He is hitting .310 on the season.

June 23, 2009

Scott Hairston has been activated from the 15-day disabled list, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Hairston had been out since June 2. His return should help boost a stagnant Padres lineup. In 43 games this season, Hairston is batting .327 with eight home runs and 27 RBIs. He won't keep up at that rate, but could be a decent third outfielder in most formats.

June 19, 2009

Scott Hairston, out with a strained left biceps since June 3, will go on rehab assignment to Single-A Lake Elsinore this weekend, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:

Hairston was hitting the ball very well in 2009 before he got hurt, even putting up decent fantasy numbers (.327, 8, 23 and six steals). He could be worth a flier once he returns, which is probably next week, if you are in need of an outfielder.

June 18, 2009

According to the North County Times, Padres' outfielder Scott Hairston took ground balls, shagged fly balls, ran, threw and faced live pitching during batting practice before Wednesday's game. Hairston said he is feeling much better, and he is expected to go on a rehab assignment soon.

Our View:

Hairston is said to be getting very near a return, but he will have to play at least three games during his rehab assignment before he is ready. There is a possibility he could be back in the Padres' lineup by this weekend, but it looks like nearly a sure thing that he will be available by next week.

June 3, 2009

Scott Hairston has been placed on the 15-day DL due to a strained biceps. He will be replaced on the roster by Will Venable.

Our View:

Hairston was a solid option in daily change formats as he had been a very effective portion of the outfield platoon in San Diego. If you do not have an open roster spot, it's probably safe to cut bait and find a player who can contribute over the next two weeks.

June 3, 2009

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Scott Hairston left in the third inning of Tuesday's game with a strained biceps.

Our View:

Hairston said the injury got progressively worse with each swing. It doesn't sound good, but the book is still out on how serious it is. He is a game-time decision for tonight. Stay tuned.

May 31, 2009

Scott Hairston hit a home run for the second-straight day on Sunday, going 2-for-4 with his seventh homer, two runs a walk and his sixth stolen base.

Our View:

Hairston has been playing every day and should continue to be a fine NL-only outfielder who can make for a decent start even in mixed leagues when the matchup is right, given his decent mix of power and speed.

April 17, 2009

Outfielder Scott Hairston wasn't fooled by Cole Hamels on Friday night. He went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a homer, and four RBI in the win.

Our View:

Hairston has a lot of power, and he tends to run very hot and cold. He often only starts against southpaws, but the Padres may give him extra looks if he keeps swatting the ball like this.

April 11, 2009

Scott Hairston made the most of his start on Friday and was 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI in the Padres 7-3 win over the Giants.

Our View:

Hairston also scored two runs and stole a base in Friday's game. He was slated to be a reserve this season, but has already registered 12 at-bats. If he keeps hitting like this he'll get in the lineup more often.

March 27, 2009

Scott Hairston hit two home runs on Friday and drove in four in the Padres 5-2 win.

Our View:

Hairston will probably be a utility player this season, but isn't really strong enough in any category to make up for his .248 average even if he earns a full time job.

January 8, 2009

Scott Hairston decided to re-sign with the Padres on Thursday, according to the Associated Press. The deal is for one year, but no financial terms were announced.

Our View:

Hairston hit .248-17-31 last season for the Padres and offers a nice power bat when used properly, i.e., that means he would be best suited as a fourth outfielder and not as a starter. Let's hope the Padres realize that.
