Newsbreakers

October 8, 2009

Aaron Cook went from solid to shaky in his NLDS start on Thursday. The sinker-baller pitched five scoreless innings before getting touched for three runs in the sixth. The performance was still good enough to earn the win, however, as Colorado won 5-4 in Philadelphia.

Our View:

Five scoreless innings is about as much as most pitchers can hope for against Philadelphia's fearsome lineup, and all-in-all, Cook turned in a good outing for the Rockies.

October 1, 2009

In just his second start since August 25, Aaron Cook was dominant on Thursday afternoon. The sinker-balling righty allowed only one run in eight innings of work, throwing just 85 pitches, as Colorado beat the Brewers 9-2 to clinch a playoff berth. They now head into a three-game series with the Dodgers that will decide the National League western division crown. L.A. has a two-game lead.

Our View:

Thursday was a shot across the bow from Cook and the Rockies - he's ready to go for the playoffs. He will be a very tough opponent in October, especially at Coors Field.

September 25, 2009

Aaron Cook only allowed four hits over five scoreless innings in Friday's 2-1 win over the Cardinals at Coors Field. He had no walks and one strikeout.

Our View:

Cook was in control tonight, but had to settle for a no-decision as the Cardinals tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the seventh. He was 0-3 over his previous three starts.

September 22, 2009

According to the Denver Post, Aaron Cook will get the start on Friday against the Cardinals.

Our View:

Cook has been rehabbing a shoulder strain for the last month, but fared well in a 50-pitch simulated game on Saturday and the Rockies think he's ready. He'll be on a limited pitch count (around 70), so he likely won't be able to go deep into the game, but the Rox have to be happy he's trotting back out to the hill. Before the injury he was 10-6 with a 4.47 ERA.

September 19, 2009

According to the Denver Post, Aaron Cook threw a 50-pitch simulated game on Saturday and felt no pain in his strained shoulder.

Our View:

Cook has been on the DL since August 21st, but says that he's feeling great right now. He is slated to start on Thursday against the Padres and likely will barring any setbacks.

September 15, 2009

MLB.com reports that Aaron Cook threw a simulated game on Tuesday and felt no pain in his ailing shoulder.

Our View:

The Rockies weren't counting on him returning to the rotation this season, but he's on target to be back by the middle of next week. He was rusty in Tuesday's outing, but the important thing is the shoulder felt fine. He will throw another session on Saturday and will be reevaluated after.

September 14, 2009

According to the Denver Post, Rockies' starting pitcher Aaron Cook is still hopeful he will be able to pitch for the team this season. Cook threw a 25-pitch side session on Sunday, but the team isn;t planning on him being available again this year.

Our View:

Cook has been out since August 22 with a right shoulder strain, and time is running out for him to make a return to the team. Even if he were able to come back in the last week or so of the season, it seems unlikely the team would add him to the playoff roster. Unless his recovery miraculously speeds up in the next few weeks, it looks like Cook is done for 2009.

September 9, 2009

Aaron Cook (shoulder strain) played catch on Wednesday, and will throw off the mound before the team's game against the Reds, according to the Denver Post.

Our View:

The Rockies ace is inching toward a return, but doesn't have to rush, as Colorado maintains a three-game lead in the wild care race. If that changes, however, expect his pace of recovery to follow suit.

September 4, 2009

Aaron Cook is throwing from 100 feet and is still hopeful that he will be able to return before the regular season ends, according to MLBlogs.com. Cook has been on the DL since August 21 with a shoulder injury.

Our View:

The Rockies could use Cook down the stretch if he is able to return, and if not he should be ready to go in the playoffs if his team can get in without him. We will have to see how he progresses over the next few weeks, but throwing long toss is a good start.

September 3, 2009

Aaron Cook (shoulder) might not rejoin the Rockies rotation before the end of the regular season, according to MLBlogs.com.

Our View:

Cook apparently still has a "a distance to go" before he could throw a bullpen session, though the team is still saying he could be back before the playoffs start. He has been out since August 21.

September 1, 2009

According to the Denver Post, Aaron Cook threw from 60 feet on Tuesday and reported no pain.

Our View:

The right-hander is making steady progress in his rehab from an ailing shoulder and looks to be on track to rejoin the Rockies rotation before the end of the season.

August 24, 2009

Aaron Cook's MRI on his ailing shoulder came back negative with no structural damage, according to the Denver Post.

Our View:

There now seems to be a chance of Cook returning to the Rockies this season. He will start playing catch next week after the team returns from San Francisco.

August 22, 2009

Aaron Cook has been placed on the 15-day DL with a shoulder injury, according to th team's Twitter page. Cook is scheduled to have an MRI on his shoulder on Monday.

Our View:

Cook has been getting bombed in the month of August, and it looks like his shoulder may be giving him some problems. We will know more after the MRI on Monday, but it's not looking good for Cook owners at this point.

August 22, 2009

Aaron Cook got blasted again Friday. He lasted just four innings after giving up four runs on three hits and a pair of walks in a 6-3 loss to the Giants.

Our View:

Cook was having a fine season until August. He has failed to go more than five innings in any start and has allowed 14 total runs already this month. The Rockies are hoping he pulls out of the skid soon.

August 18, 2009

The Denver Post reports that Aaron Cook will throw two bullpen sessions in between his Friday start.

Our View:

Cook was destroyed in his last start and wants extra practice so he doesn't become a repeat offender. He also plans to study tape of his last outing with pitching coach Bob Apodaca and Jason Marquis. He claims that his sprained big toe is no longer an issue.

August 16, 2009

Aaron Cook was bludgeoned by the Marlins on Sunday. He was chased from the mound after just 2.1 innings and a whopping seven earned runs. Needless to say, he was tagged with the loss.

Our View:

Cook was forced to miss his last start with a sprained toe, and we're guessing he wishes he would have missed this one as well. His fantasy owners certainly feel that way, as this was his worst start of the season.

August 10, 2009

Aaron Cook, who is recovering from a sprained right big toe, is on pace to start Saturday's game at the Marlins, according to InsideTheRockies.com. He was able to throw off flat ground from 120 feet today.

Our View:

He was initially scheduled to pitch Tuesday against Pittsburgh, but was pushed back to prevent him from aggravating his injury. This is good news, but he will still be a risky fantasy option.

August 9, 2009

Aaron Cook has been scratched from his scheduled Tuesday start against the Pirtaes with turf toe, according to the Denver Post.

Our View:

The team originally thought he'd be able to go Tuesday, but apparently not. He's still tentatively scheduled to go next Saturday, but turf toe often lingers, so stay tuned. Either Josh Fogg or Jhoulys Chacin will make the start.

August 8, 2009

According to the Denver Post, Rockies' starter Aaron Cook has been diagnosed with a sprained right toe.

Our View:

The big toe injury can be painful, but the Rox don't consider the injury to be serious. Cook is still on schedule to make his next start. He will visit the doctor on Monday and unless he finds additional problems Cook should be good to go.

August 6, 2009

Aaron Cook didn't last long on Thursday afternoon. He was yanked after five innings due to surrendering three runs on seven hits. He did not allow a walk or record a strikeout in the Rockies' 3-1 loss to the Phillies.

Our View:

Cook is now 10-4 after taking the loss with a respectable 3.93 ERA. The loss was his first since June 1st, but his ERA jumped after a 4.17 mark in July.

July 31, 2009

Aaron Cook gave up three earned runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings in Friday's 5-3 win at Cincinnati. He had two walks and four strikeouts, and surrendered two homers.

Our View:

The game was tied 3-3 when Cook exited, so he ends the night with a no-decision rather than a win. He has 10 wins for the season, and has not taken a loss over his last 11 starts.

July 26, 2009

Aaron Cook pitched seven sharp innings to earn his tenth win on Sunday, allowing just two runs as the Rockies beat San Francisco 4-2.

Our View:

Cook has a mediocre 1.41 WHIP, but usually neutralizes the runners he lets on base. He's quietly morphed into one of the National League's better starters the past two seasons.

July 21, 2009

Aaron Cook was mediocre on Tuesday night, allowing four earned runs in six innings of a 6-5 Rockies loss to Arizona.

Our View:

After going 5-1 in June, Cook has just win in July. He's nothing if not resilient, though, so look for him to start another hot streak soon.

July 17, 2009

Aaron Cook easily picked up his ninth win on Thursday, allowing just one run in six innings as the Rockies pounded the Padres 10-1 in San Diego.

Our View:

Cook doesn't have gaudy numbers, but is a reliable innings eater who has been picking up a lot of wins the last two seasons. He is a great "glue guy" for any fantasy rotation.

July 13, 2009

The Rockies have set their rotation for the second half of the season following the All-Star break, according to the Denver Post.

Our View:

Aaron Cook will start Thursday in San Diego, followed by Ubaldo Jimenez, Jason Hammel, Jason Marquis and Jorge De La Rosa.

July 9, 2009

Aaron Cook was tagged for five earned runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings in Thursday's 7-6 win over Atlanta at Coors Field. He issued three walks with three strikeouts.

Our View:

Cook had a rough outing, and should be happy he was handed a no-decision rather than a loss. He is winless over two starts this month after going 5-1 with a 2.36 ERA in June. Hopefully he will get back on track soon.

July 4, 2009

Aaron Cook was tagged for two earned runs in an injury-shortened five inning outing on Saturday, and took a no-decision as the Rockies lost 9-6 to Arizona.

Our View:

Cook apparently just got the wind knocked out of him, and should be fine for his next start.

July 4, 2009

The Denver Post's Dave Krieger is reporting that Rockies ace Aaron Cook left the game on Saturday after having "the wind knocked out of him" on a dive.

Our View:

This is good news for the Rockies, as it was initially thought Cook had injured his back. He should be good to go for his next scheduled start.

June 28, 2009

Aaron Cook was outstanding again on Sunday in the Rockies' 3-1 win over the A's. Cook went eight innings and allowed one run on nine hits while walking one and striking out four.

Our View:

After a rough start to the season, Cook has emerged as a very reliable option over the last several starts. The Rockies are rolling, and while they stay hot Cook seems like a solid start in all leagues. Beware of him reverting back to his early season form, but right now he is a solid play.

June 23, 2009

Aaron Cook was dominant in Monday's 11-1 win at the Angels, as he only allowed one earned run on three hits over seven innings. He had two walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:

Cook earned his seventh win of the season, and lowered his ERA to an even 4.00. He has won four straight starts, and allowed one earned run three times over the span. Keep him active in fantasy lineups for his next trip to the hill.

June 11, 2009

Aaron Cook was impressive for the second straight start on Thursday, giving up only one earned run in six innings while striking out seven. He earned his fifth victory of the year, as the Rockies won 5-4 for their eighth straight win.

Our View:

After a shaky start to the season, Cook has gone six innings five straight starts, giving up only ten earned runs in that span to lower his ERA from 5.71 to 4.26.

June 6, 2009

Aaron Cook put together a very impressive start on Saturday in his win against the St. Louis Cardinals. Cook went eight innings and allowed one run on four hits while walking one and striking out four.

Our View:

Cook has been a disappointment this season after a solid 2008 campaign, but he looked very solid tonight. The suddenly inept Cards' offense may have had a little to do with it, but overall Cook was still very good tonight. His ERA is at 4.50, and he is an NL-only option but still a very average pitcher.

June 1, 2009

Aaron Cook struggled in Monday's 4-1 loss at Houston as he allowed four earned runs on nine hits over six innings, with one walk and two strikeouts.

Our View:

He was handed a loss in each of his last two starts after throwing a complete game shutout at Atlanta on May 21. He shall remain an unstable fantasy hurler.

May 26, 2009

Aaron Cook was lit up by the Dodgers on Tuesday. He allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits and three walks over six innings. he fell to 3-2 on the season as the Rockies got pummeled 7-1.

Our View:

Cook tossed a shutout in his last start, but looked considerably worse in this one. He's been trading off between being dominant and pitching batting practice in his last four starts. Hopefully you play him on the good days. According to the formula, the next one should be good. But don't hold us to it.

May 21, 2009

Aaron Cook went the distance on Thursday. The Rockies' ace tossed a complete game, four-hit shutout in a 9-0 win over the Braves. He allowed one walk and struck out three, while improving to 3-1 on the season.

Our View:

Cook appeared to be putting it together with four quality starts in a row, until the wheels came off on May 16th. Today's outing was a very nice bounce back effort and make his previous start look like the aberration.

May 10, 2009

Aaron Cook looked sharp for the second straight time as he picked up his second win of the season in 3-2 win over the Marlins. He surrendered two runs, one earned, on four hits and four walks, while striking out three.

Our View:

Cook has given up just two earned runs in his last 14 innings and he is resembling the pitcher that was elected to the all-star game last summer. He is never going to be a big strikeout guy, which limits his fantasy value. However, if he can keep the ball in the yard, he should be able to pick up some wins.

May 5, 2009

Aaron Cook threw eight strong innings on Tuesday, allowing just one run on five hits and three walks, but did not factor in the decision. The Rockies lost 2-1 in ten innings on a Brian Giles walk-off double.

Our View:

Cook has struggled this season, but Tuesday's outing was a positive showing. We dare not read too much into it though as it was against the Padres and played in Petco Park. That scenario would boost any pitcher's stats.

April 25, 2009

Aaron Cook struggled with his control on Friday but did not factor into the decision as the Rockies lost to the Dodgers 6-5. Cook went six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while walking six and striking out four.

Our View:

Cook only let up three runs tonight, but he was not sharp. The six walks in six innings is far too high, and he has been far from the pitcher he was last year. His fantasy value is decreasing with every start, so if he is on your team you may want to find another option.

April 18, 2009

Aaron Cook was victimized by three Dodger home runs and took the loss in Saturday's 9-5 defeat. He allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks over just four innings.

Our View:

Cook has now allowed five home runs in three starts this season and is quickly getting away from what made him successful in Coors field in 2008. Namely, keeping the ball in the park. His ERA jumped to 10.22 on the season.

April 6, 2009

Aaron Cook lasted just 2.1 innings in Monday's 9-8 loss to the Diamondbacks. He surrendered seven hits, six earned runs, and a walk while striking out two batters.

Our View:

This was certainly not the outing the Rockies were hoping for from their "ace". Cook was good for a 16-9 record a season ago while allowing only 13 home runs in 211.1 innings of work. He gave up two longballs on Monday, and it's probably safe to say that last year's low number of home runs was a fluke for the Rockies' starter.

March 27, 2009

Aaron Cook put a lot of runners on base Friday, but managed to work out of jams and limited the damage. He allowed three runs over 5.2 innings, but surrendered ten hits and a walk. He managed to hang on for the victory.

Our View:

Cook is expected to be the ace of a rag-tag staff in Denver. He should contribute in ERA and wins, but his K-rate leaves more than a little to be desired. He struck out just over hitters per nine innings last year.

March 23, 2009

Aaron Cook remained sharp on Sunday as the Rockies beat the Indians 4-1. Over five innings of work, he scattered five hits and a walk, while striking out two and allowing just one run.

Our View:

Cook will be the Rockies opening day starter and they are hoping that he is saving something for the regular season. This spring, he has allowed just four earned runs in 19 innings while striking out 17 batters. He gets by in Coors Field mostly because of a sinker that induces a ton of groundballs. Don't expect many strikeouts or much of a WHIP, but he should maintain a decent ERA and get you double digit wins.

March 11, 2009

Aaron Cook threw five innings of shutout ball as the Rockies defeated Cleveland 5-0 on Wednesday. He struck out seven, allowed three hits, and walked none.

Our View:

Cook has now struck out 15 hitters in 14 innings this spring while boasting a 1.93 ERA. He had a weak 4.09 K/9 rate last season, but this spring he has certainly showed more promise in that department. He is the Rockies ace and should have another solid season.

March 7, 2009

Aaron Cook has been named the Rockies' opening day starter, according to the Denver Post.

Our View:

Cook was the team's best starter last season so this decision is no surprise. He has not had a very good start to his spring and his weak 4.09 K/9 rate limits him severely in fantasy games.

March 2, 2009

Aaron Cook got blasted on Sunday, allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk. Only two of the runs were earned, but this certainly isn't what the Rockies had in mind.

Our View:

Cook won 16 games last year and with Jeff Francis expected to miss some time, he'll be expected to ancor the Colorado rotation.

February 22, 2009

Aaron Cook will get the initial start of the Rockies' spring training schedule, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Cook is the ace of Colorado's staff, having won 16 games a year ago. He doesn't strike a lot of batters out, which hurts fantasy-wise, but he's still a solid contributor.
