Newsbreakers

August 6, 2009

According to the St. Petersburg Times, the Rays have signed free agent reliever Winston Abreu.

Our View:

Abreu refused a minor league assignment this morning and opted for free agency. Looks like it didn't take long for someone to snatch him up. The Rays traded Abreu a month ago to get Jonathan Meloan, and now he winds up with the organization again through free agency. Not a bad deal for Tampa.

August 6, 2009

Former Indians reliever Winston Abreu has become a free agent.

Our View:

Abreu was DFAed by the Indians on August 1st and was outrighted to Triple-A, but he opted for free agency instead. He's struggled in the majors this season with the Rays and Indians, but for the Rays' Triple-A team he was dominant, allowing just 14 hits and ten walks in 32 innings while fanning 49. Someone will likely give him a shot.

August 1, 2009

The Indians have designated reliever Winston Abreu for assignment.

Our View:

It's the second time this season that Abreu has been DFA'ed. The 32-year-old right-hander will have to find a new home, again.

July 27, 2009

Winston Abreu was suspended for three games, and Cleveland's manager Eric Wedge for one, as a result of Abreu's hitting of Seattle's Jack Hannahan with a pitch on Saturday after both teams had been warned by the umpires, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Abreu has surrendered six earned runs (seven total) in just 2.1 innings over three appearances with Cleveland since being acquired by the organization from Tampa Bay earlier in the month, so here's to hoping this news has no fantasy implications for you.

July 2, 2009

The Indians have acquired Winston Abreu from the Tampa Bay Rays for minor league pitcher John Meloan, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

Our View:

Abreu was DFAed by the Rays on June 27th, but pitched extremely well in Triple-A, striking out 49 in 32 innings and recording a 1.41 ERA. He will likely help a struggling Indians' pen. He will be added to the Tribe's Major League roster.

June 27, 2009

According to the Tampa Tribune, the Rays have designated pitcher Winston Abreu for assignment.

Our View:

The man called up when Jason Isringhausen landed on the DL got the boot to make room for recent additions Scott Kazmir and Chad Bradford.

June 14, 2009

The St. Peterburg Times reports that the Rays have called up pitcher Winston Abreu to take Jason Isringhausen's spot in the bullpen. Manager Joe Maddon says that reports on the right-hander have been good coming out of Durham.

Our View:

Abreu is a veteran minor leaguer who will probably only see mop up duty in the Rays bullpen. He holds no fantasy value.

February 6, 2009

The Rays have signed Winston Abreu to a minor league deal, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

The 31-year-old reliever spent last season in Japan and won't hold much fantasy value if he manages to earn a bullpen spot with the Rays.
