Newsbreakers

October 2, 2009

Jeremy Sowers was tagged for four earned runs on four hits over a mere three innings in Friday's 6-2 loss at Boston. He had two walks and one strikeout.

Our View:

Sowers gave up four or more earned runs in each of his last three starts, and fell to 6-11 for the season.

September 26, 2009

Jeremy Sowers struggled on Saturday but his team came out ahead. He lasted just five innings after allowing five runs on six hits and four walks, but the Indians emerged with a 9-8 win over the Orioles.

Our View:

Sowers has been beaten up lately, allowing 11 runs in his last six innings. He's also surrendered 15 hits and five walks over that stretch.

September 19, 2009

Jeremy Sowers recorded exactly three outs in his start on Saturday. In the time it took him to do that the A's jumped on him for six runs, nine hits and a walk. He got a well deserved loss as the Tribe fell 8-4.

Our View:

Sowers falls to 6-10 after Saturday's miserable outing. It was easily his worst start of the season and oddly came on the heels of a brilliant seven-shutout-inning performance against the Twins. Talk about Jekyll and Hyde.

September 14, 2009

Jeremy Sowers only surrendered six hits over seven scoreless innings in Monday's 6-3 loss at Minnesota. He had two walks with two strikeouts.

Our View:

Sowers pitched very well tonight, and it is a shame he was forced to settle for a no-decision. He is hot, as he allowed two or less earned runs in each of his last three starts.

September 4, 2009

Jeremy Sowers only allowed two earned runs on six hits over six innings in Friday's 5-2 win over the Twins at Progressive Field. He had no walks with one strikeout.

Our View:

Sowers improved his record to 6-9, and issued two earned runs in each of his last two starts. He has not taken a loss over his last three starts as well.

August 29, 2009

Jeremy Sowers came within one out of qualifying for his sixth win on the season on Saturday, but couldn't make it, taking a no-decision in Cleveland's 5-3 win over the Orioles.

Our View:

Sowers is now 2-2 with a 4.42 ERA in the month of August.

August 24, 2009

Jeremy Sowers was rocked for five earned runs on six hits over seven innings in Monday's 10-6 win at Kansas City. He had two walks and two strikeouts.

Our View:

Sowers had a tough outing on the hill, but was handed his fifth win of 2009 as the Indians had a strong night offensively. He snapped a two-game losing streak, but his ERA climbs to 4.93.

August 19, 2009

Jeremy Sowers gave up three earned runs on four hits over 6.2 innings in Wednesday's 3-0 loss to the Angels at Progressive Field. He issued five walks with two strikeouts.

Our View:

Sowers falls to 4-9, and tied his season-worst with five free passes tonight. He is just an option for deeper AL-only leagues.

August 13, 2009

Jeremy Sowers fell to 4-8 on Thursday as the Indians lost to the Rangers by a score of 4-1. Sowers went 5.1 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits while walking one and not striking out a batter.

Our View:

Sowers had been pitching pretty well, but he wasn't all that sharp today. He doesn't strike guys out, so unless he really shuts the other team down, he is not a good fantasy pitcher. Deeper AL-only leagues could maybe employ him, but everyone else should stay away.

August 7, 2009

Jeremy Sowers only allowed two earned runs on six hits over seven innings in Friday's 6-2 win at Chicago. He had two walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:

Sowers has allowed two or less earned runs in each of his last three starts, and has two wins over the span. He is worth employing in AL-only leagues for his next trip to the hill.

August 1, 2009

Jeremy Sowers only surrendered two earned runs on four hits over six innings in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Tigers at Progressive Field. He issued four walks with three strikeouts.

Our View:

Sowers had a solid outing despite the four free passes, but had to settle for a no-decision due to a lack of run support from his teammates. He fired seven scoreless innings in his previous start at Seattle, and merits fantasy consideration in AL-only leagues for his next trip to the mound.

July 25, 2009

Jeremy Sowers shutout the Mariners for seven innings on Saturday. He allowed just four hits and two walks and earned his third win of the season in the Indians' 10-3 victory.

Our View:

Fresh from the minors, Sowers tossed a gem Saturday. Chances are he won't have many starts like this, but he's still an upgrade over Tomo Ohka.

July 25, 2009

The Sports Network is reporting that the Cleveland Indians have recalled pitcher Jeremy Sowers from Triple-A to start on Saturday. Sowers will take the empty roster spot vacated by the trade of Rafael Betancourt.

Our View:

Sowers is taking over for Tomo Ohka in the rotation, and he doesn't figure to be much better. Sowers has a 5.77 ERA in ten starts this season, and he should not be viewed as a serious fantasy candidate unless he puts together a few solid starts in a row.

July 22, 2009

Manager Eric Wedge indicated that Jeremy Sowers will be recalled from Triple-A to start Saturday's game against Seattle, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Sowers will replace the struggling Tomo Ohka in the rotation. Sowers will get another chance to prove his worth to the Indians, but should only be considered for AL-only leagues, as he holds a 5.77 ERA and 1.56 WHIP over 11 games (10 starts).

July 9, 2009

Jeremy Sowers has been optioned to Triple-A Columbus by the Indians, according to the Twitter page of The Sports Network's Chris Ruddick. This is a corresponding move to the activation of Rafael Betancourt. Sowers is 2-7 on the season with the team.

Our View:

Sowers just hasn't been able to put it together with the Tribe so far this year, and he is probably a better fit for the Triple-A squad. He has an ERA of 5.77 this season, and he held no fantasy value prior to his demotion.

July 7, 2009

Jeremy Sowers was tagged for four earned runs on five hits over 5.1 innings in Tuesday's 10-6 loss at division rival Chicago. He had two walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:

Sowers falls to 2-7, and his ERA rises to 5.77. He has given up four or more earned runs in three of his last four starts, and should remain an unstable fantasy option with Cleveland.

July 1, 2009

Jeremy Sowers was rocked for five earned runs on 11 hits over six innings in Wednesday's 6-2 loss to the division rival White Sox at Progressive Field. He had one walk and two strikeouts.

Our View:

Sowers only has one win over his last seven starts, and allowed two or less earned runs four times over the span. His fantasy stock would likely be higher if he played for a better team than the Indians (31-49).

June 26, 2009

Jeremy Sowers allowed two earned runs on six hits over seven innings in Friday's 9-2 win over the Reds at Progressive Field. He had one walk and fired six strikeouts.

Our View:

Sowers snapped a five-game skid without a win, and bounced back well from his last outing when he was lit up for six runs against the Cubs. He is worth a look for deeper AL-only leagues for his next start.

June 21, 2009

Jeremy Sowers was tagged for six earned runs on seven hits over a mere 4.1 innings in Sunday's 6-2 loss at the Cubs. He issued four walks with one strikeout.

Our View:

Sowers has gone five straight starts without a win, and has a 4.97 ERA in June. He should only be considered for deeper AL-only leagues for his next outing.

June 16, 2009

Jeremy Sowers allowed three earned runs on five hits over five innings in Tuesday's 7-5 loss to the Brewers at Progressive Field. He had two walks and two strikeouts.

Our View:

He has gone four straight starts without a win, with two losses over the span. He allowed two or less earned runs in four of his last five starts, but his fantasy stock is hindered while pitching for the struggling Indians.

June 11, 2009

Jeremy Sowers pitched well in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Royals at Progressive Field, as he only allowed two runs on six hits over five innings. He had one walk and two strikeouts.

Our View:

The Royals led the game 2-1 when Sowers exited, so he was dealt a no-decision rather than a win. He has allowed two or less earned runs in each of his last four starts, but only has one win over the span. His fantasy value would likely be higher if he played with a better club.

June 6, 2009

Jeremy Sowers was hit with the loss on Saturday as the Indians fell to the White Sox by a score of 4-2. Sowers went six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits while walking two and striking out five. He is now 1-2 on the year.

Our View:

Sowers pitched pretty well today, but his offense was unable to bail him out. Both of his starts this week were solid, so AL-only and deeper mixed league managers should take notice, as he could be a nice pickup to plug into your rotation.

June 1, 2009

Jeremy Sowers only allowed one earned run on three hits over five innings in Monday's 5-2 loss to the Yankees at Progressive Field. He issued five walks with three strikeouts.

Our View:

Other than the five free passes, it was a strong outing for Sowers. He replaced Zach Johnson in the rotation, and Sowers is worth targeting if still dangling on the waiver wire in deeper leagues.

May 25, 2009

Jeremy Sowers threw the final five innings in Monday's 11-10 come from behind win over the Rays. He did not allow a run while giving up three hits and a walk.

Our View:

After two short outings as a starter, Sowers was moved back to the bullpen. He was excellent tonight against a formidable opponent and there's a good chance that he rejoins the rotation in the near future. The Indians do not have many other options as both Anthony Reyes and Aaron Laffey both went down with serious injuries last week.

May 23, 2009

Jeremy Sowers has been recalled by the Indians from Triple-A Columbus, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Aaron Laffey (oblique) was placed on the 15-day DL as the adjoining move.

Our View:

Anthony Reyes also landed on the DL, and Sowers looks to be in line for spot starts until Reyes returns. Sowers allowed 14 hits, six walks and 12 earned runs over two starts (nine innings) with Cleveland this season however, and is only worth targeting in deeper leagues.

May 14, 2009

Jeremy Sowers has been optioned to Triple-A Columbus by the Indians, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The team signed reliever Luis Vizcaino as the corresponding move.

Our View:

Sowers allowed 12 earned runs and six walks over two starts (nine innings) this season, and was not useful for fantasy leagues prior to his demotion.

May 12, 2009

Jeremy Sowers was awful in his first start of the season and wasn't much better in his second on Tuesday. He allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks over just four innings and took the loss as the Indians fell to the White Sox 7-4.

Our View:

Sowers has been miserable so far this season. He won't gain any fantasy attention if his struggles continue and he may lose his job as Aaron Laffey could come out of the bullpen and replace him.

May 7, 2009

Jeremy Sowers' first start of the season was a forgettable one as he allowed seven runs in five innings of work. He gave up seven hits and three walks as the Red Sox prevailed 13-3 on Thursday.

Our View:

Sowers had gotten off to a good start in Triple-A, but it did not translate against the Red Sox. His spot in the rotation is anything but guaranteed, but he figures to get another chance. Aaron Laffey is in the bullpen and could be called upon to replace Sowers if he continues to struggle.

May 6, 2009

Jeremy Sowers has been recalled to start for the Indians on Thursday as the team has decided to move Aaron Laffey to the bullpen, according to The Plain Dealer.

Our View:

The Indians bullpen has been a mess, they lead the AL in blown saves and home runs allowed, so they made a series of moves to address this situation on Wednesday (demoting Rafael Perez and recalling Matt Herges). Laffey will move to the pen because he can warm up quickly. As for Sowers he was 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA at Triple-A this year, but he lacks an "out pitch" and is nothing more than AL-only material.

April 28, 2009

Jeremy Sowers lowered his ERA to 2.25 after allowing one run on five hits in seven innings for Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday.

Our View:

The southpaw doesn't have much more to prove at Triple-A, but it still remains to be seen if he has the stuff to be a major league pitcher. With the way that Fausto Carmona, Anthony Reyes and Carl Pavano have pitched thus far, Sowers will likely find himself in the Indians' rotation again very soon.

March 24, 2009

Jeremy Sowers has been optioned to Triple-A Columbus by the Indians, according to the Sports Network.

Our View:

Sowers was unable to nail down the fifth spot in the Indians' rotation. The spot looks to go to Aaron Laffey.

March 17, 2009

Manager Eric Wedge commented on Jeremy Sowers after allowing only one earned run over four innings in Monday's loss to Seattle, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Wedge said, "Jeremy was good again. He has had a couple outings back to back where he has been more aggressive with his fastball and had a lot on it. He commanded it well. He continues to be more consistent with his change up. All good things."

Our View:

Sowers remains in the mix for the fifth spot in the Indians' rotation. He should be left for AL-only leagues if he does win the spot, as he held a 1.49 WHIP over 121 innings in 2008, with only 64 strikeouts.

March 16, 2009

Jeremy Sowers allowed three hits, a walk, and one earned run over four innings as the Indians fell to Cleveland 4-1 on Monday. He recorded two strikeouts in his second start of the spring.

Our View:

The 26-year-old is battling for a spot in the Indians rotation this spring. He was hit pretty hard in 22 starts a season ago and he boasts little fantasy upside.

March 16, 2009

Jeremy Sowers will be making his fifth appearance and second start in the Cactus League today against Seattle, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View:

He needs a solid outing while competing for a spot in the Indians' rotation, as he has allowed three earned runs on 11 hits over eight innings so far, with four walks and only three strikeouts.

February 25, 2009

Jeremy Sowers is set to start today's preseason opener against the Giants, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Manager Eric Wedge said, "He has had his ups and downs early in camp. He is still a young player and he is still working to find what he needs to do to be successful. It still goes back to commanding his fastball and throwing it where he wants to throw it. I would still like to see him get a little better feel for his change up to work off the fastball. It is in there, we just have to keep trying to help him bring it out on a more consistent basis."

Our View:

Sowers is expected to earn a spot near the back of the Indians' rotation, but is not going to be a good source for strikeouts, and his ERA and WHIP are both likely to be too high to be useful in fantasy leagues.
