August 3, 2009

Mike Fontenot led the Cubs offensively in tonight's 4-2 win at Cincinnati, as he went 2-for-4 with a single and a three-run homer off Aaron Harang.

Our View:

Fontenot has a hit in three straight games, and recorded multiple RBI in a game for the first time since June 3, when he collected two at Atlanta.

June 5, 2009

Mike Fontenot went 1-for-3 with an RBI single in Friday's 2-1 win at Cincinnati.

Our View:

Fontenot has a hit in three straight games, with four RBI over the span. Keep him active in fantasy lineups while he is hot.

May 30, 2009

Mike Fontenot went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 7-0 win over the Dodgers at Wrigley Field. He hit a double and a triple.

Our View:

Fontenot has nine hits over his last 20 at-bats, and his fantasy stock is on the rise. He will be getting the majority of the playing time at third base until Aramis Ramirez returns from the DL.

May 30, 2009

Skipper Lou Piniella is high on Mike Fontenot and views him as the Cubs' best candidate to cover third base until Aramis Ramirez returns from the DL, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Piniella said, "Fontenot is honestly our best option there. When we get Aaron Miles back from the disabled list it will help the situation too. But we feel very comfortable with Fontenot at third, and we can use Scales and Andres Blanco at second."

Our View:

Fontenot has seven hits over his last 17 at-bats (.411), and it looks like he will get the bulk of the starts at third while Ramirez is out despite committing three fielding errors at the position.

May 19, 2009

Despite a 1-for-29 slump, Cubs Manager Lou Piniella has decided to stick it out with Mike Fontenot at third base, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

Fontenot gets the start at third regardless of his struggles because Sweet Lou thinks he has more pop in his bat than the alternative options there. With Aramis Ramirez still on the shelf he'll likely see plenty of action, but isn't a safe fantasy play in any league at this point.

May 1, 2009

Mike Fontenot went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI on Friday in the Cubs' 8-6 victory over the Marlins.

Our View:

Fontenot bumped his average to .250 with his performance today, but he has shown the ability to hit for both power and average. He has four home runs on the season, and remains a decent option as an infielder in NL-only leagues and possibly in deep mixed leagues.

April 15, 2009

Mike Fontenot will start at third in place of Aramis Ramirez in Wednesday's game, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

Fontenot has started nicely to the season, and his versatility makes him a nice fantasy option on the infield. He will continue to play nearly every day, whether at third or second.

April 6, 2009

Mike Fontenot went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a double in the Cubs 4-2 win over Astros on opening day.

Our View:

Fontenot hit .305/.395/.514 a season ago and he has gotten off to a nice start here in 2009. He should make for a fine value option at second base for fantasy owners as long as he does not suffer from over exposure. Aaron Miles also figures to steal some starts from him.

March 15, 2009

Mike Fontenot hit his third home run of the spring on Sunday as the Cubs beat Arizona 10-7. He finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Our View:

Fontenot will be the starting second baseman for the Cubs this season, in front of Aaron Miles. However, he may not necessarily play everyday as the 29-year-old has never handled such duty. He has had an excellent spring with nine extra base hits and four singles while hitting .385.

March 15, 2009

Mike Fontenot has been named as the Cubs' starting second baseman this season by manager Lou Pinella, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

Fontenot will likely bat second in the Cubs' batting order. His backup, Aaron Miles, will play a utility role, covering at second, third, and shortstop.

March 12, 2009

Mike Fontenot continued to impress against Team Japan on Thursday, going 2-for-2 with a run.

Our View:

His competitor for second base duty, Aaron Miles, did not play, but Fontenot is making it real hard for manager Lou Piniella to bench him. He's a much better option than Miles at the moment and could be a nice late-round sleeper in NL-only drafts.

March 9, 2009

Mike Fontenot clubbed his second homer of the spring on Monday. He went 2-for-3 overall with a walk, two runs and two RBI.

Our View:

Fontenot is starting to pull away from Aaron Miles based on their spring performances and is likely to get the majority of the at-bats at second base for the Cubs this year.

March 5, 2009

Mike Fontenot had another strong day at the plate for the Cubs on Thursday, going 2-for-4 with just one strikeout.

Our View:

Fontenot's hitting .391 so far this spring and really has to have manager Lou Piniella' attention for the starting job at second base.

March 5, 2009

Mike Fontenot had a solid game for the Cubs on Wednesday. He went 2-for-4 with a triple and scored two runs.

Our View:

Fontenot's had a hot start to the spring and is batting .368 in the Cactus League, giving him a leg up on Aaron Miles who's batting just .188 so far this season. The two infielders are competing for the Cubs' starting job at second base.

March 1, 2009

Mike Fontenot impressed his skipper on Sunday, doubling twice in three at-bats.

Our View:

Fontenot is competing with Aaron Miles this spring for the Cubs' starting second base job. Fontenot has more power, but both have performed well so far this spring.

February 27, 2009

The AP reports that Mike Fontenot hit a triple and a home run, while driving in four runs for the Cubs in their 10-4 win over Texas on Friday.

Our View:

Fontenot held a .514 slugging percentage last season, which is probably higher than most would expect. He is the favorite to win the starting second base gig over Aaron Miles.

February 18, 2009

Mike Fontenot will compete with Aaron Miles for the Cubs' starting job at second base, according to the Chicago Daily Herald. Manager Lou Piniella is planning to get both players 400 at-bats this season.

Our View:

Fontenot clubbed nine home runs in just 243 at-bats last year, so he could get to 15 home runs based on his average home runs per at-bat if he were to see 400 in 2009. This would be decent for a middle infielder and he could have 20 home run potential if he wins the job from Miles outright.
