December 8, 2009

FOXSports.com reports that the Rangers are apparently very interested in Marlins third baseman Jorge Cantu.

Our View:

It would likely take a hefty deal that includes pitcher Brandon McCarthy, but Cantu would be a great fit in Texas. He can fill their needs at first base and DH and fill in at third when needed. His fantasy value would increase as well, moving to a band box stadium and being inserted into a strong run-producing lineup. Stay tuned.

November 23, 2009

MLB.com is reporting that the Marlins are planning on keeping Jorge Cantu for the 2009-10 season.

Our View:

He was widely thought to be available after batting .289 with 16 home runs and 100 RBI in 2009. He is set to get a hefty raise over his 2009 salary of $3.5 million in arbitration, but Florida is apparently willing to pony up.

October 3, 2009

Jorge Cantu left Saturday's game with a sprained right ankle.

Our View:

He finished the game 1-for-2 with an RBI and reached the century mark for runs batted in for the first time since 2005. Cantu was replaced by Nick Johnson at first base and will likely miss Sunday's game as well.

Jorge Cantu went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI on Wednesday, helping the Marlins to a 5-4 victory in Atlanta.

Our View:

September 26, 2009

Jorge Cantu went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI in the Marlins 9-6 win over the Mets on Saturday.

Our View:

Cantu is coming on like gangbusters down the strecth. He's hitting .343 this month with 23 RBI and has nine hits and five RBI in his last three games.

September 23, 2009

Among Jorge Cantu's four hits on Wednesday night was a game-winning single off beleaguered Phillies closer Brad Lidge, as the Marlins won 6-5 at home.

Our View:

Cantu is now batting .283 with 91 RBI this season, and a big reason why the Marlins were in competition for a playoff spot for much of the year.

September 19, 2009

Jorge Cantu went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in the Marlins 3-2 win over the Reds on Saturday.

Our View:

Cantu has been a run producing machine this month. He's only homered three times, but has driven in 18 and is hitting .316 in September.

September 18, 2009

Jorge Cantu went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in tonight's 4-3 win at Cincinnati. He hit a single and a double.

September 2, 2009

Jorge Cantu went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI in a 4-3 loss to the Braves on Tuesday night.

Our View:

Cantu has been ice cold lately, so it's nice to see him put together a string showing. He hit just .213 in August with two homers, but appears to be turning the corner with five hits and three doubles in his last two games.

August 21, 2009

Updating a previous report, Jorge Cantu is not in the Marlins starting lineup Friday, according to MLBlogs.com.

Our View:

It was thought that Cantu (stiff neck) would make it in Friday, but the neck is still bothering him too much. Ross Gload will get the start at first base.

August 21, 2009

Jorge Cantu is expected to return to the Marlins' lineup on Friday, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Cantu was scratched from the lineup on Thursday with a stiff neck.

Our View:

Cantu has been killing the ball for most of the season, and he has a ten-game hitting streak going at the moment. He isn't a sure thing for tonight, but it seems very likely that he will play. Get him back in your lineup, but you might want to check back later just to make sure he is playing.

Jorge Cantu went 2-for-4 with two RBI on Thursday night, and hit just his second home run since the All-Star break, as the Marlins beat Houston 7-2 at home.

Jorge Cantu went 1-for-1 with a solo homer off Rich Harden in tonight's 5-2 win over the Cubs at home. He drew three walks.

July 26, 2009

Jorge Cantu went 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI and two walks in the Marlins' 4-3 loss to the Dodgers on Saturday.

Our View:

Cantu is still a productive player, but his power has disappeared since the season's opening month. He has seven homers in April and just one each in May, June and July. It's concerning.

July 19, 2009

Jorge Cantu went 2-for-3 on Sunday, but like every other Marlin, didn't drive in any runs as Philadelphia shutout the Marlins 5-0.

Our View:

The comeback Jorge Cantu started in 2008 has blossomed into a full-blown renaissance, and he is a great option in the infield (his position eligibility likely varies based on the league) in every format.

July 16, 2009

Jorge Cantu went 1-for-3 with a single in tonight's 4-0 loss to the Phillies at home.

June 10, 2009

Jorge Cantu left Wednesday's game against the Cardinals with another case of dizziness, according to Fox Sports Midwest.

Our View:

Cantu has battled dizziness for the past few days. He is uncertain if he caught the same viral infection that hit teammate Wes Helms and New York's John Maine and Carlos Beltran.

June 7, 2009

Jorge Cantu will be examined after feeling dizzy and light-headed during Saturday's game, according to the Miami Herald.

June 3, 2009

Jorge Cantu was 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, and a run scored as the Marlins fell 9-6 to the Brewers on Wednesday.

June 1, 2009

Jorge Cantu helped lead the Marlins in Monday's 7-4 win over Milwaukee, as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

May 30, 2009

Jorge Cantu had a quality day at the plate in Saturday's 7-3 win over the Mets. He went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored.

Our View:

It's been a rough month for Cantu, but it's about to be over. After a hot start and cold April, his numbers work out to about what we expect of him through two months of the season - .272-8-37-23-1.

May 30, 2009

The Miami Herald reports that Jorge Cantu insists that a sore left wrist has nothing to do with his May struggles. "I'm just missing my pitches," Cantu said. "This (the hand) has nothing to do with what I'm going through."

Our View:

After hitting .365/.444/.778 through April, the first baseman is hitting only .210/.257/.276 through May. The real Cantu is somewhere in between those numbers and you should stick with him for now.

May 19, 2009

Jorge Cantu was 3-for-4 with a run scored in the Marlins' 5-3 loss to Arizona on Tuesday.

Our View:

Cantu started off the season with a huge bang, but has fizzled considerably in the month of May. Fantasy owners have to be delighted to see a three-hit game out of him as he hasn't collected more than one hit in a contest since May 6th. Coming into tonight's game he was hitting just .161 this month. Maybe this will drag him out of his rut.

May 7, 2009

Jorge Cantu had a tough day at the plate in Thursday's 4-2 loss to the Braves, as he went 0-for-4 with a strikeout.

Our View:

Cantu was due for a letdown, as he was among the hottest players in the majors, and was named the NL's top player last week. He should bounce back fine.

May 6, 2009

Jorge Cantu went 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, five RBI, and two runs scored as the Marlins fell to the Braves 8-6 on Wednesday.

Our View:

Cantu was just 1-for-14 in his last three games, but came back crushing tonight. He already has 30 RBI through 23 games and he's slugging .685 on the season.

May 4, 2009

Jorge Cantu has been named the NL Player of the Week, according to the Miami Herald. He earned the honor by hitting .346 last week with four homers and 15 RBI.

Our View:

Cantu is the second member of the Marlins to be named the player of the week, joining pitcher Josh Johnson.

May 1, 2009

Jorge Cantu went 1-for-4 with two RBI on Friday in the Marlins' 8-6 loss to the Cubs. Cantu is hitting .358 on the season.

Our View:

Cantu has been tearing the cover off of the ball so far this season, and he added two more RBI to give him 24 on the year. He also has seven home runs and has become one of the biggest surprise players of 2009. He should be owned and started in all leagues right now, but be aware that he may not stay this hot all year.

April 30, 2009

Jorge Cantu went 2-for-5 with a home run, a double, four RBI, and two runs scored in the Marlins 8-2 win over the Cubs on Thursday.

April 28, 2009

Jorge Cantu exploded for two home runs and five RBI in a 3-for-3 effort at the plate during Florida's 7-4 win over the Mets.

Our View:

Apparently the hand was not an issue on Tuesday as Cantu had his best offensive game of the season. Last year's reemergence is appearing to be less and less of a fluke. He's hitting .357 on the season with five homers and 17 RBI.

April 27, 2009

Jorge Cantu slammed his injured left hand on second base when he reached back for the bag to prevent sliding past it during Saturday's game, according to the Miami Herald.

April 25, 2009

Jorge Cantu (bruised hand) was back in the cleanup spot on Saturday as the Marlins fell to the Phillies 6-4. He went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, three RBI, and a run scored.

Our View:

Cantu picked up right where he left off prior to the injury. He now has 11 RBI through 12 games and is a critical element to the success of the Marlins offense.

April 25, 2009

Jorge Cantu is back in the Marlins order and is hitting cleanup against the Phillies on Saturday, according to the Miami Herald. He had received a cortisone shot in his bruised hand and had a good batting practice session earlier in the day.

Our View:

The Marlins offense has struggled without Cantu. Through his first 11 games, he was hitting .341/.413/.561 and he should be safe to plug back into fantasy lineups.

April 24, 2009

Jorge Cantu is out of Friday's lineup, according to the Miami Herald. He is suffering from a bruised hand.

Our View:

Cantu has been an offensive catalyst for the Marlins, so this news is unfortunate. The injury has already kept him out of a handful of games this season and hopefully doesn't develop into something more serious. He will be reevaluated and is a game-time decision for Saturday. Be sure to pull him out of your lineup tonight.

April 22, 2009

Jorge Cantu saw a hand specialist on Wednesday and it was determined his injury was simply a bruise, according to the Miami Herald. He has not played in the last couple of games for the Marlins as a result, and it is not certain when he will be available again.

Our View:

This is good news for the Marlins and Cantu's fantasy owners, as it was feared that there may have been cartilage or bone damage in the hand. Cantu is off to a hot start and the Marlins offense has struggled without him.

April 22, 2009

Infielder Jorge Cantu will not play on Wednesday against the Pirates. He has flown back to Florida in order to visit a hand specialist, the Palm Beach Post reports. Cantu sat out on Tuesday due to a sore left wrist.

Our View:

Are there no good specialists in the Pittsburgh area? The Marlins haven't offered much information about Cantu's injury, but this news suggest there is some real concern.

April 21, 2009

The Palm Beach Post reports that Jorge Cantu was scratched from Tuesday's game due to a sore wrist. Ross Gload will get the start at first baseman.

Our View:

No word yet how severe the soreness is. Hopefully a night of rest will be all it takes for him to get back into the lineup. The corner infielder is hitting .341 through 41 at bats.

April 15, 2009

Jorge Cantu made it back in the lineup on Wednesday and it didn't take long for him to contribute. He was 2-for-5 with an RBI, a walk and two runs scored in the Marlins 10-6 win over the Braves.

Our View:

Cantu has been bothered by a bruised hand, but he appears to be shaking off any ill effects. He's raking this season with two homers, eight RBI and a .375 average and should be safe to get back in your lineup.

April 12, 2009

Jorge Cantu has been scratched from today's lineup while nursing a sore left hand, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Cantu is day-to-day, but skipper Fredi Gonzalez expects him to return to the starting lineup Tuesday against the Braves. Cantu may be able to serve as a pinch-hitter today against the Mets.

April 10, 2009

According to MLB.com, Marlins slugger Jorge Cantu will return to action and hit cleanup on Friday against the Mets. He was suffering from a bruise on his left hand after being struck by a pitch in Wednesday's contest.

Our View:

Cantu is a little sore and bruised up, but not badly enough to keep him out of the lineup. That's good news for fantasy owners as he bounced back in a big way last year and has carried his hot bat into 2009. He's hitting .444 with two home runs and five RBI in about two and a half games this season.

April 8, 2009

X-rays on Jorge Cantu's left hand came back negative. Cantu left Wednesday's game after he was struck by a Daniel Cabrera pitch.

Our View:

The Marlins are off tomorrow, so Cantu should be able to return to the lineup on Friday.

April 8, 2009

Jorge Cantu was forced out of Wednesday's game against Washington after six innings as he was struck on the left hand by a Daniel Cabrera pitch.

Our View:

The severity of the ailment is yet to be determined. Ross Gload or perhaps Gaby Sanchez would replace Cantu at first base if he's forced to miss time.

April 7, 2009

Jorge Cantu hit his second home run of the season Tuesday night in Florida's 8-3 win over the Nats.

Our View:

Cantu finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored. He's now 4-for-7 with two homers and five RBI this season.

Jorge Cantu hit cleanup and started at first base in the Marlins 12-6 win over the Nationals on Monday. He finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI, a double, a home run, a run scored and a walk.

Our View:

The 27-year-old was a pleasant surprise last season as he belted 29 home runs and collected 95 RBI for the Marlins. He will be eligible at first and third base this season, and he figures to make a good run at his solid production from a season ago.

April 1, 2009

Jorge Cantu had a nice day at the plate Wednesday going 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. The homer was his second of the spring.

Our View:

Last year was quite a surprise as Cantu bounced back with 29 homers and 95 RBI. There's no telling which Cantu will show up this year, but we're guessing he won't repeat those numbers. Still, if he even comes close he's a nice late pick at third.

March 6, 2009

Jorge Cantu drove in a run with a solo homer Friday as Mexico lost to the Diamondbacks 4-2.

Our View:

This was Cantu's second homer in as many games against Arizona. He hit a grand slam and drove in six runs on Wednesday in Mexico's 19-4 blowout win.

January 19, 2009

MLB.com reports that the Marlins have avoided arbitration with third baseman Jorge Cantu by signing him to a one-year $3.5 million deal.

Our View:

Cantu hit 29 home runs in 155 games last season. He will have first base eligibility as well, due to 66 appearances there last season. He was a surprise a season ago, but he won't catch too many owners off guard in 2009.
