December 8, 2009

Chone Figgins has finalized his four-year deal with the Mariners worth $36MM, according to the Associated Press. There is also a vesting option for 2014 that could make the contract worth $45MM.

Our View:

Figgins led the AL with 101 walks in 2009, and also posted a career-high .395 on-base percentage. He should make a solid replacement for Adrian Beltre at third base, and should also form a nice tandem with Ichiro Suzuki at the top of the batting order.

December 6, 2009

Chone Figgins will take a physical with Seattle's team doctors on Monday after which, assuming he passes, his four-year, $36 million deal with the Mariners will be officially announced, according to the Seattle Times.

Our View:

Assuming there isn't anything here that nobody currently knows about, Figgins will pass the physical and be Seattle's third baseman and likely leadoff hitter next season.

December 4, 2009

Updating an earlier report, Chone Figgins has reportedly agreed on a four-year deal with the Mariners worth $36MM, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

There is also believed to be a vesting option for a fifth year, but the Mariners have yet to announce the signing. With Ichiro and Figgins at the top of the lineup, the Mariners will cause lots of trouble for opposing teams with their feet.

December 4, 2009

Updating an earlier item, the Mariners are on the "verge" of signing utility fielder Chone Figgins, according to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

Our View:

The potential deal is rumored to be for four seasons at around $36 million. Stay tuned.

December 4, 2009

Fox Sports reports that the Mariners are the "clear frontrunners" to sign infielder/outfielder Chone Figgins.

Our View:

The two sides reportedly engaged in serious discussions on Thursday, and could reportedly agree to a four-year deal in just a few days time. The Angels reportedly want to keep their long-time spark plug, but don't want to give him a contract longer than three years. Stay tuned.

December 3, 2009

Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated tweeted that Chone Figgins is now on the Mariners' radar.

Our View:

The Mariners would have to give draft pick compensation to the Angels if they sign Figgins. The Angels offered the Type A free agent salary arbitration. The Mets are among the teams also interested in Figgins.

December 1, 2009

Chone Figgins has been offered salary arbitration from the Angels, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Our View:

Figgins is a Type A free agent, so the Angels would receive two top draft picks as compensation if he inks with another team. The Phillies are believed to be interested in the speedy Figgins if he rejects his arbitration offer.

November 10, 2009

Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated tweeted that the Phillies are seriously considering Chone Figgins.

Our View:

The addition would give the Phillies more speed, and three leadoff-types, joining Shane Victorino and Jimmy Rollins. He would be a nice upgrade over Pedro Feliz at third base.

September 30, 2009

Chone Figgins went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in tonight's 5-0 win over the Rangers at Angel Stadium. He hit a single and a double.

Our View:

Figgins bounced back after going hitless over his previous three games (nine at-bats). He continues to lead the AL with 114 runs scored.

September 23, 2009

Chone Figgins was productive in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Yankees at Angel Stadium, as he went 3-for-4 with a double and two singles.

Our View:

Figgins collected three hits in each of his last two games, but is only batting .250 in September.

September 2, 2009

Chone Figgins' 2-for-3 effort on Wednesday represented half of the Angels total hits in their 3-0 loss to the Mariners.

Our View:

Figgins has hit over .300 in every month this season since April ended and has his overall average up to .310. The LA speedster has also swiped 39 bases this season.

August 16, 2009

Chone Figgins wreaked havoc on the Orioles Sunday. He went 4-for-7 with three doubles, three runs scored, three RBI and a stolen base in the Angels' 17-8, 13-inning win.

Our View:

Figgins has been leading the charge in the top spot for the Angels all season. To go along with his .312 average he's also swiped 37 bases. He's not much in the power department (just one extra-base hit in August coming into Sunday's game), but more than makes up for it in other categories.

August 15, 2009

Chone Figgins went 3-for-4 with a run scored in tonight's 5-1 win at Baltimore. He hit a double and two singles, and also swiped two bases.

Our View:

Figgins has a five-game hitting streak, and raised his batting average to .308. He leads the AL with 89 runs scored, and paces the Angels with 36 stolen bags.

August 12, 2009

Chone Figgins went 3-for-5 with a run, an RBI and a stolen base in the Angels' 10-5 win over the Rays Wednesday.

Our View:

Figgins now has 34 steals and has his average above .300 for the season. He looks to have delivered on the whole "bounce-back season" thing in 2009.

July 25, 2009

Chone Figgins wreaked havoc on the basepaths Saturday. He went 2-for-4 with three runs score, a pair of RBI and swiped three bags in the Angels' 11-5 win over the Twins.

Our View:

Figgins now has 31 thefts this season and is continuing his fine bounce back campaign. The speedster has bumped up his RBI production this month as well, driving in 16 after totaling just 12 in April and May combined.

July 14, 2009

According to the Twitter page of ESPN's Amy K. Nelson, Angels' infielder Chone Figgins has been added to the American League All-Star team. He will replace the injured Evan Longoria on the roster.

Our View:

Many people thought Figgy deserved to be on the team to begin with, and now he gets his chance. This is his first All-Star nod, and it is just unfortunate that he didn't get to experience the rest of the All-Star festivities like the Home Run Derby last night.

July 5, 2009

MLB.com is reporting that Angels' infielder Chone Figgins is on the ballot for the final All-Star spot voted by the fans. He is joined by third baseman Brandon Inge of the Tigers, second baseman Ian Kinsler of the Rangers, designated hitter Adam Lind of the Blue Jays and first baseman Carlos Pena of the Rays.

Our View:

The fans get to vote one of these players onto the team, and it looks wide open at this point. All five are deserving, so vote for your favorite at MLB.com.

June 17, 2009

Chone Figgins went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored in the Angels 4-3 win over the Giants on Wednesday.

Our View:

Figgins' 48 runs scored this season ranks third in the American League. It is just June 17 and Figgins already has nine multi-hit games this month.

June 3, 2009

Chone Figgins was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI in Wednesday's 8-1 win over Toronto.

Our View:

Figgins is hitting over .300 for the first time since April 17. This was his seventh three-hit game since May 1.

May 31, 2009

Chone Figgins went 2-for-4 with a walk, three runs and his 20th stolen base of the season on Sunday.

Our View:

Figgins became the third player to reach 20 stolen bases this season, after Carl Crawford and Jacoby Ellsbury. While his lack of power is a bit of an annoyance coming from third base, he's more than made up for it with his elite speed this season.

May 23, 2009

Chone Figgins was 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, two RBI, a walk, and a stolen base in Friday's 3-1 win over the Dodgers. He now has 19 stolen bases on the season.

Our View:

This was the sixth three-hit game of the month for Figgins. Not only is he hitting and stealing bags at an excellent rate, but he has already drawn 21 walks against just 25 strikeouts. He should be in line for a ton of stolen base and run scoring opportunities all season long.

May 9, 2009

Chone Figgins is the man who delivered Zack Greinke his first loss of the season. His Sac fly in the third inning held up as the only run of the game and the Angels topped the Royals 1-0 on Saturday.

Our View:

Figgins has been pretty much what we expected this season. He has a .262 average with zero homers, six RBI and 12 steals. He's a good source of speed, but until he gets the average up he doesn't hold much value outside of AL-only leagues.

May 7, 2009

Chone Figgins was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and two stolen bases in Thursday's 6-1 win over Toronto.

Our View:

Figgins has three three-hit games in his last four starts and he has raised his average from .226 to .280 in that short span. His OBP is up to .381 and he has gotten himself into plenty of stolen base situations. He is 12-for-14 in steal attempts this season.

April 30, 2009

Chone Figgins was 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI, and a run scored as the Angels fell to the Yankees 7-4 on Thursday.

Our View:

Figgins has struggled throughout April, but he does have nine stolen bases. Tonight was his first triple of the year, and he only had four all of last season. We still like his chances of getting hot and being a productive player, but he is starting to test our patience.

April 17, 2009

Third baseman Chone Figgins went 3-for-5 with two runs and a steal in Friday's loss to the Twins.

Our View:

Figgins has already swiped six bags (on seven attempts), and the Angels will need him to keep setting the table if they plan to score well while Vlad Guerrero is out. Chone is an excellent source of speed when healthy, and fantasy owners obviously hope the injury bug doesn't bite again as it did in 2006 and 2007.

April 16, 2009

FoxSports reports that Chone Figgins could be trade bait by the deadline this season. The third baseman is set to be a free agent at the end of the season and prospect Brandon Wood will be out of minor league options.

Our View:

The team would rather move Juan Rivera and keep Figgins as a left fielder. However, there does not figure to be much interest in Rivera and Figgins may be too expensive to hold onto. He's off to a good start this season with a .459 OBP and five stolen bases through eight games.

March 31, 2009

Chone Figgins was 2-for-3 with two RBI, a stolen base and a run scored on Tuesday. He's now hitting .419 and has driven in 10 this spring.

Our View:

Figgins has never been a power threat, but he's still a solid option at third base. Last year's under achievements seem to be behind him, as he's having a fantastic spring. Expect lots of doubles, triples, runs and steals. He might get that average back to the .300 plateau as well.

March 30, 2009

Chone Figgins went 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI, a triple, a walk, a strikeout, and a stolen base as the Angels beat the White Sox 13-3 on Monday. He raised his spring average to .407 in the process.

Our View:

Figgins fell off last season as he managed just one triple while hitting .276. However, things are looking good this spring and he already has eight stolen bases to go with two triples. He no longer holds the multi-position eligibility of the past, but he should still be given strong consideration given this year's crop of third basemen.

March 28, 2009

In the Angels 16-9 win over the Mariners, L.A.'s Chone Figgins went 3-for-4, and stole his seventh base of the spring.

Our View:

Figgins is hitting .385 on the spring. By this point, fantasy owners should know what he is and what he brings to the table - no power, few RBI, decent average, good stolen base total.

March 18, 2009

Chone Figgins hit his first home run of the spring in a 1-for-3 effort on Wednesday. It was a two-run shot.

Our View:

Figgins is very light in the power department, but his value lies in stolen bases. He's coming off a down year in 2008 and fantasy owners are hoping for a rebound. He's batting .364 this spring, so that's a start.

March 14, 2009

Chone Figgins was 2-for-3 with two doubles in Saturday's 6-4 win over the Cubs.

Our View:

The two doubles were his first extra base hits of the spring. Figgins had only 16 extra base hits out of 125 last season.

March 9, 2009

Chone Figgins had a good day for the Angels on Monday, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Our View:

Figgins is hitting .273 so far this spring for Anaheim. If he can stay healthy, he could be a valuable contributor to fantasy teams due to his speed.

March 8, 2009

Chone Figgins stole his second base of the spring and scored a run Sunday as the Angels beat up on the Giants 8-1.

Our View:

Figgins should once again be one of the top base stealers in all of the AL. He finished sixth in the league in 2008, and given he exceeds his 116 games played last season, he should top that number as the Angels continue to excel at a NL brand of baseball.

January 14, 2009

The AP reports that the Los Angeles Angels avoided arbitration with Chone Figgins by agreeing to a one-year, $5.8 million contract on Wednesday.

Our View:

The 3o-year-old posted 41 triples over four seasons before notching only one last season. He did still manage 34 stolen bases in 116 games, but all of his power numbers fell off, as evidenced by his career-low .318 slugging percentage. He has traditionally been eligible for multiple positions, but he will be available only at third base in most leagues.

January 13, 2009

The Chicago White Sox are interested in acquiring the services of Angels speedster Chone Figgins, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View:

The teams are talking about a Jermaine Dye for Figgins swap. Figgins can play third base, second base and in the outfield, and the White Sox could use a player at all three positions.

January 5, 2009

The Angels have signed manager Mike Scioscia to an extension, according to Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports. Details of the contract are unknown, but the extension is believed to go through 2012.

Our View:

Scioscia has been managing the Angels since 2000. He has won the AL West four times in nine years and won the wild card, World Series, and AL Manager of the Year in 2002, so it's not hard to see why they want to keep him around.
