Newsbreakers

December 13, 2009

John Buck has signed a one-year, $2 million deal with the Blue Jays, according to ESPN.

Our View:

Buck was non-tendered by the Royals on Saturday. He will most likely be Toronto's starter in 2010. In 584 career games, he is just a .235 hitter.

December 12, 2009

Long-time Royals catcher John Buck was non-tendered by the team on Saturday.

Our View:

He will give way to the Jason Kendall era in Kansas City. Not good news for anybody, least of all Royals fans.

September 13, 2009

John Buck was the offensvie leader for the Royals on Sunday as they blanked the Indians 7-0. Buck went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, a run scored, and two RBI.

Our View:

Buck is certainly not a great offensive catcher, but he did look solid today. He is hitting .217 on the season, and his seven homers and 33 RBI are awfully low.

July 30, 2009

John Buck knocked in two runs on Thursday, but the Royals' anemic offense got by and large shutdown by Brad Bergesen, as the Orioles won 7-3 at home.

Our View:

Buck is batting some variation of .224 for the third straight season now. Sadly, he's just not a good offensive catcher.

July 6, 2009

John Buck has been activated from the DL following his recovery from a back ailment, according to TSN. Tug Hulett was sent down to the minors to make room on the roster.

Our View:

Buck is only an option for AL-only leagues while sharing the workload at catcher with Miguel Olivo, who currently leads the Royals with 13 homers.

July 3, 2009

According to the Kansas City Star, John Buck (back) could return to the lineup some time this weekend.

Our View:

Buck is slated to catch in a Triple-A rehab game on Friday and if his herniated disk holds up he'll come off the DL on Saturday and join the Royals. He may have to fight for playing time once he returns though. Miguel Olivo has been very good in Buck's absence.

July 1, 2009

John Buck is nearing his return to the Royals and is expected to be activated from the DL by the end of this week or early next week, according to the Kansas City Star. He has been recovering from a herniated disk in his lower back.

Our View:

Buck will share starts behind the plate with Miguel Olivo, who has been enjoying a power surge. So his fantasy value will be limited to AL-only leagues upon his return.

June 27, 2009

According to the Kansas City Star, John Buck is two games into his rehab assignment and could join the team soon.

Our View:

Buck suffered a herniated disk in his back on May 30th, but has played the last two games in a row. He caught three innings on Thursday and went 1-for-3 at the plate. Friday he was the DH and went 0-for-4.

June 24, 2009

According to the Kansas City Star, injured catcher John Buck took regular batting practice on Tuesday for the first time since suffering a herniated disk in his back on May 30th.

Our View:

Buck is ready to depart on a minor league rehab assignment. Barring any setbacks, the catcher should return to the Royals in the near future. Unfortunately, even when he returns he'll have limited fantasy value due to the fact that he'll split time with Miguel Olivo.

June 19, 2009

John Buck is progressing in his recovery from a slightly herniated lower back, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View:

He participated in on-field batting practice for the first time today since sustaining the ailment May 30 against Chicago. He also caught 70 pitches from the machine, and noted that everything felt good. The Royals are yet to decide his next step.

June 15, 2009

MLB.com reports that catcher John Buck played catch on Saturday at Kauffman Stadium. He is continuing with indoor excercises and water therapy as he works his way back from a herniated disc in his lower back.

Our View:

Buck could be out until the all-star break as he has yet to start swinging a bat. Due to the fact that he splits duty with Miguel Olivo, his fantasy value is very limited.

June 12, 2009

John Buck indicated that he is feeling better in his recovery from a herniated disk in his lower back, according to the Associated Press. He has progressed to water treatment.

Our View:

Buck could return to Kansas City before the end of the month, but was only hitting .226 with three homers over 28 games prior to going down, and won't hold much fantasy value outside of deeper AL-only leagues.

June 2, 2009

John Buck has been released from the hospital, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View:

He is feeling better in his recovery from a herniated disk in his lower back. Fantasy owners should continue to manage fine without him.

May 31, 2009

MLB.com is reporting that the Royals have placed catcher John Buck on the 15-day DL with a back injury. The team purchased the contract of catcher Brayan Pena in the corresponding move.

Our View:

Buck is not much of a fantasy option anyway, so this injury shouldn't wreak much havoc on fantasy rosters. Buck is the second catcher on the Royals' roster, so he should not be owned even when he returns.

May 30, 2009

John Buck left Saturday's game against the White Sox in the third inning with back spasms, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

Miguel Olivo replaced him behind the plate. Buck had difficulty walking due to the ailment, and will be re-evaluated Sunday.

April 30, 2009

John Buck went 3-for-3 with two triples, a double, and five RBI as the Royals beat the Blue Jays 8-6 on Thursday.

Our View:

Buck has shown a lot of power in a few at bats this season and it seems to be only a matter of time before he pushes Miguel Olivo aside to become the Royals No. 1 catcher. Buck is hitting .300/.370/.700 through 40 at bats. Olivo is hitting .178/.196/.333.

April 14, 2009

John Buck smashed two home runs and drove in five on Tuesday as the Royals clobbered the struggling Indians 9-3. Buck now has three home runs on the year.

Our View:

Buck is now hitting a cool .500 on the season with six hits in 12 at-bats. Half of those have gone over the wall.

April 12, 2009

John Buck played the role of hero on Sunday as he went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, three RBI, and a run scored in the Royals 6-4 win over the Yankees.

Our View:

Miguel Olivo is still considered the No. 1 catcher in Kansas City, but Buck's performance in front of today's home crowd likely won over a few supporters. At this point, he holds very little fantasy value.

March 13, 2009

Catcher John Buck hit his third home run of the spring Friday against the Rangers.

Our View:

Buck nearly tied a career-high with 48 RBI in 109 games in 2008, but his .224 average leaves a lot to be desire. Whatever fantasy value he carries may be in AL-only leagues.

January 20, 2009

The Associated Press reports that the contract catcher John Buck signed Tuesday is worth $2.9 million for one year.

Our View:

Buck may be a viable bench option for deeper leagues, as there's a good chance he will repeat, if not surpass, 2008's total of 48 RBI, which is a fair number for a part-time catcher.

January 20, 2009

The Royals have avoided salary arbitration with John Buck by inking the catcher to a deal, according to the Kansas City Star. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Our View:

Buck's fantasy value will remain low in 2009 as he is slated to serve as the No. 2 catcher behind Miguel Olivo.
