Craig Monroe has been released by the Pirates, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
This comes as little surprise, as the team designated him for assignment two weeks ago. Monroe is a career .252 hitter with 115 home runs in 814 games.
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have designated Craig Monroe for assignment.
Monroe's three home runs and .215 average weren't enough to keep him on the team and he was bumped to make room for prospect Steve Pearce.
Craig Monroe was 3-for-5 with a double, three RBI, and a run scored as the Pirates beat the Padres 10-1 on Saturday. He started in in left field and hit third in the lineup.
Monroe only started tonight because Nate McLouth was unable to go due to a tweaked oblique. The outfielder does not see enough regular duty to warrant any fantasy consideration at this point. However, he does have an impressive nine RBI in 23 at bats.
Craig Monroe went 2-for-4 with six RBI in Saturday's 10-0 win over the Braves at PNC Park. Both of his hits were three-run homers.
Monroe started the game in left field, but should see more playing time following today's stellar performance. He has topped 20 homers three times over his career with Detroit, and is worth picking up in NL-only leagues if dangling on the waiver wire.
According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Craig Monroe will get his first start of the season Wednesday night against the Astros.
Monroe earned his spot on the team by hitting eight home runs this spring, but he has only had three at-bats and no starts thus far in 2009. He is not a fantasy option in any format at this time.
Craig Monroe hit his eighth home run of the spring in his only at-bat for the Pirates on Saturday. The solo shot also accounted for his 16th RBI of spring training.
Although Monroe looks to have made the roster, he won't be much more than a fourth outfielder until the club is willing to admit that Nyjer Morgan is just not worthy of an everyday job.
Craig Monroe has earned one of the final spots on the Pittsburgh Pirates opening day roster, according to MLB.com. He has a .270 average with six home runs and 13 RBI this spring.
Monroe is the only one of the five Pirate outfielder who swings a right-handed bat, so he could find himself in a platoon situation at some point this season. Regardless, he figures to have no fantasy value as he will see more reserve duty than not.
Craig Monroe had a monster game against Scott Baker and the Twins Thursday. The Pirates outfielder was 3-for-3 with three home runs and four RBI.
Monroe is quickly playing his way onto this Pirates club. He now has six home runs on the spring season and is hitting .333. If Monroe keeps this up he'll likely start for the Pirates and could be a valuable fantasy OF in NL-only leagues.
Craig Monroe was 2-for-3 with a run scored in Pittsburgh's 11-4 win over Houston on Sunday.
The veteran Monroe will be battling for a starting spot in a crowded Pirate outfield that features prospect Andrew McCutchen, Steve Pearce, Nyjer Morgan, and Nate McClouth.
Outfielder Craig Monroe has signed a minor-league contract with Pittsburgh, and has been invited to spring training, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Monroe has power, but lacks any semblance of a batting eye. He was designated for assignment by the Twins in August last season after hitting just .202. He had some decent years in Detroit, including a 28 home run campaign in 2006, but he strikes out a ton and has a career OBP of .301, so don't expect much out of the veteran if he makes the team.
