November 4, 2009

The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports that the Cardinals have outrighted infielder Joe Thurston and reliever Matt Scherer to the Triple-A Memphis roster.

Our View:

The Birds just wanted to clear space on the 40-man roster and had to do a little housecleaning. Thurston was a career minor leaguer who finally got a shot to get it done at the big league level last season, but he managed to hit just .225 in 267 at-bats with one homer and 25 RBI. Don't expect him to crack the roster again next year.

June 8, 2009

As previously reported, Joe Thurston will leave the Cardinals after Monday's game against Colorado to go to California to be with his wife for the birth of their first child according to StlCardinals.com.

Our View:

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said that Thurston is likely to miss the team's games against the Marlins on Tuesday and Wednesday before rejoining the club for their Thursday afternoon game in Miami.

June 4, 2009

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that infielder Joe Thurston will soon be leaving the team for 2-3 days to be with his wife for the birth of their child.

Our View:

It is likely that either Tyler Greene or Joe Mather will be recalled to fill in for Thurston while he's gone. Whoever is recalled will actually be taking the roster spot of Kyle Lohse, who is expected to be placed on the disabled list.

May 4, 2009

Joe Thurston continued his hot start on Monday, going 3-for-5 with an RBI as the Cardinals lost to the Phillies. Thurston is now hitting .303 on the year.

Our View:

Thurston has been a big surprise so far this season while filling in at second and third. His value has risen to NL-only caliber, and he may be useful in deep mixed leagues until the Cardinals get healthy.

April 5, 2009

ESPN.com reports that the Cardinals have purchased the contract of infielder Joe Thurston.

Our View:

Thurston finally gets to be on a Major League roster to open a season. He's a versatile infielder and will likely come off the bench with spot starts at second, third and short.

March 13, 2009

Joe Thurston had another fine performance Friday, recording his second three-hit game in a row. He also stole a base, scored a run and raised his spring average to .323.

Our View:

Thurston's stock continues to rise. If the Skip Schumaker experiment ends up being a bust, Thurston looks to be the favorite right now to snag the second base job. In 10 professional seasons he has yet to start a year in the big leagues. 2009 could be his best bet.

March 12, 2009

If the Cardinals move Skip Schumaker back to the outfield as rumored, Joe Thurston could be the favorite to start at second base. Thurston is starting at second today (with Schumaker at DH) against Boston and has two hits in his first two at-bats.

Our View:

Brendan Ryan would also be in the mix, and he and Thurston might make a decent platoon. Thurston has had some good minor league numbers but hasn't ever gotten a real chance at the major league level. He could be a sleeper in NL-only leagues.

March 8, 2009

Joe Thurston went 1-for-3 with one run scored and two RBI Sunday as the Cardinals fell to the Marlins 9-8.

Our View:

Thurston played right field Sunday, but his calling this season will likely be at second base, where the Cardinals have to fill a huge void. If Skip Schumaker wins the spot at second, Thurston may see time at third until the injured Troy Glaus is prepared to return.

February 12, 2009

Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch believes Joe Thurston is the favorite for the Cardinals' starting gig at second base. He will be competing with Brian Barden, Jarrett Hoffpauir, Tyler Greene and former outfielder Skip Schumaker for the spot.

Our View:

Thurston only has 59 games of MLB experience under his belt, and holds a .227 average over 66 at-bats, meaning he should be reserved for NL-only leagues if earns the No. 1 role at second.

January 22, 2009

Joe Thurston could be a possibility as the starter at third base for the Cardinals in replace of the injured Troy Glaus, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

Our View:

Thurston has only 15 hits in 59 career MLB games, so this is a long shot for sure.
