Newsbreakers

October 7, 2009

Daisuke Matsuzaka will work in Boston's bullpen in the ALDS against the Angels, according to WEEI.com.

Our View:

Dice-K allowed two or less earned runs in three of his last four starts of the regular season, but skipper Terry Francona decided to use him in the pen at the start of the playoffs. Francona added that he could potentially carry a big load, namely if No. 3 starter Clay Buchholz struggles.

October 2, 2009

Daisuke Matsuzaka only allowed two earned runs on five hits over six innings in Friday's 6-2 win over the Indians at Fenway Park. He had three walks and fired seven strikeouts.

Our View:

Dice-K allowed two or less earned runs in three of his last four starts, and looks ready for the postseason.

September 26, 2009

Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched very well on Saturday, but his offense denied him a win. The Japanese import allowed just one run on six hits and five walks over seven innings in a 3-0 loss to the Yankees.

Our View:

Dice-K held the Yankees bruising lineup in check, but the five walks against just three strikeouts is troubling. He has walked nine in 18.1 innings since his return from the DL.

September 20, 2009

Daisuke Matsuzaka picked up his second straight win on Sunday as the Red Sox defeated the Orioles 9-3. Dice-K went 5.1 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out five.

Our View:

Dice-K wasn't quite as solid today as he was in his last start, but this was still a fairly encouragng start. He is making his case to be the team's fourth starter in the playoffs, and he looks to be healthy and close to finding his old form.

September 15, 2009

Daisuke Matsuzaka only surrendered three hits over six scoreless innings in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Angels at Fenway Park. He had three walks with five strikeouts.

Our View:

This was a very encouraging outing for Dice-K, as he made his first start since June 19 following his bout with a strained right shoulder. He looks to be fine to consider for fantasy duty in his next trip to the hill.
