Newsbreakers

October 30, 2009

The Giants have re-signed Freddy Sanchez with a two-year deal worth $12MM, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

Sanchez is taking a $2.1MM pay cut for 2010 in return for $6MM in 2011. The club examined his surgically-repaired left knee this morning, and it is apparently healing fine.

September 26, 2009

MLB.com reports that Freddy Sanchez will miss the rest of the regular season with a partially torn meniscus in his left knee.

Our View:

Sanchez expects to undergo arthroscopic surgery this week. The pending free agent has been limited to just 25 games since being acquired by the Giants, and has battled not only the knee issue but a shoulder ailment as well. His future with the Giants is certainly in jeopardy.

September 23, 2009

Freddy Sanchez will "require surgery on the tear of the meniscus in his left knee that he aggravated Monday night," according to MLB.com.

Our View:

With the Giants still faintly in contention for the wild card (five behind Colorado), however, the team wants him to tough out the final ten days of the season.

September 21, 2009

Freddy Sanchez exited tonight's game at Arizona in the first inning after injuring his left leg, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

The injury-prone infielder was helped off the field, and his status is yet to be updated. Kevin Frandsen replaced him in the lineup.

September 21, 2009

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Pirates would be amendable to bringing back both of their recently traded middle infielders, Freddy Sanchez and Jack Wilson, for the 2010 season.

Our View:

Both have been huge letdowns for their new teams. Because of injury, Sanchez has played in just 23 games since being traded to San Francisco, and is hitting only .278. Wilson, meanwhile, has also been slowed by injury in Seattle, and is hitting an ugly .224 in 31 games. The paper says both would welcome a return to Pittsburgh, and at least for the moment, it's hard to envision much competition for either player.
