Newsbreakers

October 18, 2009

Maicer Izturis made a costly error on Saturday that led to a 4-3, 13-inning walk off win for the Yankees. The Angels now trail 2-0 in the ALCS.

Our View:

Izturis tried to turn an impossible double play with one out and a runner at second in the bottom of the 13th, but he threw the ball past the base and into the outfield letting Jerry Hairston Jr. score all the way from second. He was 1-for-5 with a run scored at the plate, but it didn't make up for the costly play that ended the game.

October 17, 2009

MLB.com reports that Maicer Izturis will start at second base for the Angels in Game 2 of the ALCS.

Our View:

Izturis platoons with Howie Kendrick at second, and with right-hander A.J. Burnett on the mound he gets the call. He's hitting seventh tonight and Kendrick, who had one of the Angels four hits in Game 1, will return to the lineup for Game 3 against Andy Pettitte.

September 1, 2009

Maicer Izturis went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a RBI in tonight's 2-1 loss at Seattle.

Our View:

The Angels only mustered six hits in the game, and Izturis was their lone source of scoring. Izturis raised his batting average to .302, and has four hits and three RBI over his last two games.

August 29, 2009

Maicer Izturis hit his eighth home run of the season on Saturday, but it wasn't enough for the Angels, as the Halos lost 4-3 to the A's at home.

Our View:

Through 91 games this season, Izturis is batting .298 with eight home runs and 54 RBI.

August 11, 2009

Maicer Izturis left tonight's game against the Rays after getting struck by a pitch on the right arm, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

Erick Aybar replaced him in the lineup, and his status is yet to be updated.

August 9, 2009

Maicer Izturis went 1-for-4 with a single in Sunday's 7-0 loss to the Rangers at Angel Stadium.

Our View:

The Angels only mustered three hits in the game. Izturis is batting .400 in August, and extended his hitting streak to seven games, with eight runs scored over the span.

August 1, 2009

Maicer Izturis led the Angels in tonight's 11-6 win at Minnesota, as he went 2-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. He hit a single and a three-run homer off R.A. Dickey.

Our View:

Izturis hit over .300 in each of the previous two months, and is off to a good start in August. He tied his season-high with four RBI tonight as well.

June 28, 2009

Maicer Izturis had a big day at the plate on Sunday in the Angels' 12-8 win over the D-Backs. Izturis went 2-for-3 with a home run, three runs scored, and two RBI in the win.

Our View:

Izturis is much more known for his defense than his bat, but he really put it on D-Back pitching today. He now has two homers on the year, and his fantasy value is limited to AL-only leagues at best.

April 17, 2009

Infielder Maicer Izturis is starting at DH for the Angels for Friday's game against the Twins. He will bat third.

Our View:

Duh. Here we were assuming the Angels would replace Vlad Guerrero by moving Bobby Abreu and Torii Hunter up in the batting order and improving their defense by using Gary Matthews. Our bad. Izturis, a defensive whiz, looks great as a DH and third hitter.

March 24, 2009

Maicer Izturis went 1-for-2 with a three-run homer, walk, and two runs in Tuesday's win over the Padres. He is hitting .300 this spring.

Our View:

Izturis will enter the season as a backup at shortstop, second base, and third base. He seems fairly safe in that role, but fellow bench possibilities Sean Rodriguez and Brandon Wood offer more upside with the bat. AL-only owners can feel free to grab Izturis late, but we're not expecting much.

March 13, 2009

Maicer Izturis, who has sat out of spring training games the past few days with back stiffness, is expected to return over the weekend, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Our View:

Izturis has minimal fantasy value to enter the season, as it's unlikely he'll find a starting spot in the Angels' infield with Howie Kendrick, Erick Aybar and Chone Figgins around and is also probably behind the red-hot Brandon Wood at the moment on the pecking order for at-bats.

January 28, 2009

The LA Times reports that the Angels have avoided arbitration with infielder Maicer Izturis by signing him to a one-year, $1.6 million deal.

Our View:

Izturis is part of a talented and crowded Angels infield that includes Erick Aybar, Howie Kendrick, Brandon Wood, and Chone Figgins. It is anything but a given that he will be a starter on opening day.
