Newsbreakers

October 2, 2009

Jake Peavy only surrendered two hits over eight scoreless innings in Friday's 8-0 win at rival Detroit. He had two walks with five strikeouts.

Our View:

Peavy has earned a win in each of his three starts with the Sox this season, and did not allow any earned runs in each of his last two.

September 29, 2009

Jake Peavy's scheduled start for Wednesday has been pushed to Friday, according to Joe Christensen's (Star Tribune) twitter page.

Our View:

Peavy will face the Tigers on Friday instead of the Twins tomorrow. The Sox are tinkering with their rotation following today's rain-out.

September 25, 2009

Jake Peavy only issued six hits over seven scoreless innings in Friday's 2-0 win over the rival Tigers at U.S. Cellular Field. He had two walks and racked up eight strikeouts.

Our View:

This was a strong performance from Peavy, and he improves to 2-0 over two starts with the Sox. He helped snap a four-game losing streak for Chicago.

September 24, 2009

Jake Peavy will start for the White Sox against the Tigers on Friday, according to Scott Merkin of MLB.com.

Our View:

It will be only his second start for the White Sox. In his American League debut against the Royals last Saturday, he allowed three runs in five innings while striking out five.

September 19, 2009

Jake Peavy wasn't especially sharp in his White Sox debut on Saturday, but he was good enough to get his first American League victory. The offense chipped in a bit as the Sox pounded the Royals 13-3.

Our View:

Peavy lasted just five innings and allowed three runs on three hits and a pair of walks. He also served up a homer to Billy Butler, but he fanned five in the game and now has something to build on his next time out.

September 19, 2009

The Associated Press reports that elite starter Jake Peavy has been activated from the 15-day disabled list and will make his White Sox debut against the Royals on Saturday night.

Our View:

Peavy has been on the DL since June 13th with a strained tendon in his right ankle. He hit a speed bump in his recovery when he was hit by a line drive on the elbow during a rehab start, but he's healthy and ready to go now. Before being dealt to Chicago at the trade deadline, he was 6-6 with a 3.97 ERA for an Diego.

September 15, 2009

Jake Peavy is slated to make his first start with the Sox Saturday against the Royals, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

The elite hurler fared fine during his pen session over the weekend, and is looking forward to making his debut with Chicago. Peavy will be on a pitch-count in his favorable match-up with Kansas City.

September 14, 2009

According to the Chicago Tribune, White Sox's starter Jake Peavy is looking to make his debut with the team this weekend against the Royals. Peavy is scheduled to throw another bullpen session either Tuesday or Wednesday, and if all goes well he could start two or three days after.

Our View:

Peavy seems confident that he is healthy enough to pitch, and barring another setback he should be able to go this week. Don't expect him to get deep into games right away, but his stuff is good enough to help out a fantasy squad for the few starts he will be making.

September 9, 2009

Jake Peavy threw his scheduled pen session Wednesday, according to the Chicago Tribune. He worked out of the windup and stretch position, and also took breaks to simulate a game situation.

Our View:

Peavy's status will be decided later in the week, and there is a very good chance he could make his first start for Chicago next week against Seattle at Safeco Field, if not earlier. Pitching coach Don Cooper noted that Peavy fared very well in today's session.

September 8, 2009

Jake Peavy is slated to throw his second bullpen session Wednesday, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Peavy could make his first start with Chicago next week if his session goes fine. He will talk to pitching coach Don Cooper through the week, to track how his ailing elbow is responding.

September 6, 2009

Jake Peavy threw a 60-pitch bullpen session on Saturday, according to the Chicago Tribune. Peavy is hoping to make his first start as a member of the Sox in 10-12 days.

Our View:

Peavy said he felt fine after the session, and barring any more setbacks he should pitch this season. The Sox are nearly out of the playoff hunt, altough they have been hot of late and could look to make a last second push in the Central.

September 4, 2009

Jake Peavy plans to have an intense bullpen session at U.S. Cellular Field on Friday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View:

The team just won't let Peavy's 2009 die, apparently. They are spinning this by saying it will give everyone "piece of mind" by finding out if he is finally healthy or not, but it still seems as if all involved parties would be best served by just shutting him down to ensure he's 100 percent for 2010.

September 2, 2009

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that there is a good chance the White Sox will decide to shut ailing pitcher Jake Peavy down for the rest of the season.

Our View:

With the White Sox five games under .500 and seven games out of first place, coupled with the fact that the minor league season ends next Monday, it probably makes the most sense for the Sox to just shut their new ace down and make sure he is 100 percent for 2010. The team's Double-A affiliate Birmingham is expected to make the playoffs, meaning they will be playing beyond the minors' September 7th end date, but unless something changes drastically for the big club within the next week, don't expect them to trot Peavy out again.

August 31, 2009

The Arlington Daily Herald is reporting that Jake Peavy will travel to Minnesota on Monday to be evaluated by White Sox's team doctors. Peavy was forced to leave his last rehab start in the fourth inning with elbow tightness.

Our View:

This evaluation will probably decide whether Peavy will be able to pitch this season for the Sox. We should have more information on the results either later tonight or early tomorrow, so we will keep you updated.

August 30, 2009

Jake Peavy was forced to leave his minor league rehab game with Triple-A Charlotte after just 3.1 innings on Saturday with elbow tightness, according to the Chicago Tribune's Mark Gonzales.

Our View:

The injury is thankfully not pitching related, and is just soreness stemming from a line drive he took off the elbow last week. It is a setback nonetheless, however, and with the way the White Sox have been floundering lately, potentially season-ending news for the team's playoff hopes.

August 27, 2009

Updating an earlier report, Jake Peavy will make his next start Saturday with Triple-A Charlotte, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

Peavy's elbow felt fine during today's side session, but the Sox decided it was best for him to make a fourth rehab start in the minors prior to returning to the majors. The club is yet to name a starter for Saturday's game against the Yankees.

August 27, 2009

ESPN Chicago reports that Jake Peavy will try to throw a side session on Thursday in Boston.

Our View:

Depending on how Peavy looks, he may make another minor-league rehab start Sunday or Monday. The White Sox felt he needed at least one additional rehab outing before joining the team after he was hit on the elbow by a line drive in Monday's game with Charlotte. If his pitch count reaches 80-90 he could be activated in time to start against the Red Sox in the series at U.S. Cellular Field September 4th-7th.

August 26, 2009

Jake Peavy is unlikely to make his first start with the Sox Saturday, according to ESPN Chicago. Peavy was unable to throw his scheduled side session today due to lingering effects of being struck by a line drive in his rehab start on Monday.

Our View:

Peavy is still getting treatment on his pitching arm, to relieve the swelling and soreness. Pitching coach Don Cooper hopes that the Sox do not throw Peavy into battle until his soreness subsides. Minor leaguers Carlos Torres or Dan Hudson are considered the top candidates to start Saturday's game.

August 25, 2009

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, if Jake Peavy (ankle) tosses a pain-free bullpen session on Wednesday, he will make his first start for the White Sox this weekend against the Yankees.

Our View:

Which would put him a little ahead of schedule, since the team originally thought he would not be ready until early September. He has looked good in his rehab outings, while suffering no apparent setbacks, so the odds are good that he will pitch this weekend.

August 24, 2009

Jake Peavy (strained ankle) hurled five scoreless innings in Monday's rehab start with Triple-A Charlotte, according to beat writer Scott Merkin's twitter page. He had three strikeouts with two walks, and 52 of his 80 pitches landed for strikes.

Our View:

Tonight's outing was encouraging, and Peavy remains on target to make his first start with the White Sox in early September.

August 21, 2009

MLB.com reports that Jake Peavy's rehab start for Triple-A Charlotte has been pushed back a day to Monday.

Our View:

No worries here. Peavy's start was moved from Sunday just to give him an extra day of rest. He did experience some back tightness after his last start, but that is a typical side effect of an increased workload. He's still on schedule to return from the DL and make his White Sox debut in early September.

August 19, 2009

Jake Peavy (ankle) is expected to make two more minor league rehab starts before joining the White Sox rotation in early September, according to ESPN Chicago.

Our View:

Peavy's first start is likely to come during the White Sox four game set with the Red Sox in Chicago between September fourth and seventh. Until then, be patient.

August 18, 2009

Jake Peavy gave up three earned runs and five hits over four innings in Tuesday's rehab start with Triple-A Charlotte. He did not have any walks with five strikeouts.

Our View:

44 of his 67 pitches landed for strikes. Peavy should make at least one more rehab appearance while building up his arm strength, and looks to be on target to make his first start with the Sox by the end of the month.

August 14, 2009

Jake Peavy (strained ankle) will need at least two more minor league rehab starts prior to pitching for the Sox, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

The elite hurler needs time to build up his arm strength following a seven-week layoff. There is belief he will make his debut with Chicago either August 28 against the Yankees or maybe September 3 at Wrigley Field against the cross-town rival Cubs.

August 13, 2009

Jake Peavy fared well in his first rehab start with Triple-A Charlotte tonight, as he racked up four strikeouts with only one hit and one walk issued over three scoreless innings, according to MLB.com. He said, "I threw every pitch I had -- fastball, cutter, curveball, slider, changeup. The ball was coming out fairly good. I don't feel like I'm as strong as I'm gonna be."

Our View:

Peavy will make his next rehab start on Tuesday. The elite hurler is projected to make his first start with the Sox when they start a three-game set against the Yankees on August 28 in New York.

August 8, 2009

The Associated Press reports that Jake Peavy is set to begin his rehab assignment.

Our View:

Peavy threw off a mound on Saturday and his surgically repaired ankle felt good. He is set to make three rehab starts, but White Sox GM Kenny Williams thinks that he may be fine after just two. He could be making his Sox debut at the end of this month.

August 6, 2009

According to ESPNChicago.com, Jake Peavy could be in line to make his White Sox debut on August 28th.

Our View:

Peavy, just acquired at the trade deadline from San Diego, is slated to throw a side session on Saturday and would then follow that up with three minor-league rehab starts. If Peavy stays on schedule he could make his debut August 28th or September 2nd, or 3rd. He has been on the DL with a strained tendon in his right ankle since June 13th.

August 3, 2009

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that new White Sox' hurler Jake Peavy threw 50 pitches in a bullpen session on Sunday morning and pronounced himself pain-free. Peavy is hoping to return to the mound by the end of August.

Our View:

Manager Ozzie Guillen sounded very encouraged about Peavy's bullpen session, and the team believes he will be ready to go before the end of the month. Peavy will need at least three weeks to get his stamina back, but the fact that he is pitching pain-free is a good sign for anyone holding out hope that he can contribute to a fantasy playoff run. We will keep you updated on his status going forward.

July 31, 2009

Updating a previous report, Jake Peavy has actually approved the trade to the White Sox the second time around, according to Bob Nightengale at USA Today. The Padres will receive Clayton Richard, Adam Russell, Dexter Carter and Aaron Poreda in return.

Our View:

This seems strange considering that Peavy wanted to stay in the NL, remain on the West Coast, pitch for a contender and be in a pitcher friendly ballpark. Now he's headed to an AL club in the Midwest, that is 2.5 games out of first and he'll be starting in a park that surrenders home runs like it's going out of style. He must really be done with San Diego. On the money end of it, Peavy is owed $56MM through 2012, or $74MM through 2013 if the Sox exercise his option. Assuming he makes a full recovery and pitches again this season his fantasy value will take a slight hit, taking the mound at US Cellular.

July 31, 2009

Jon Heyman of SI.com Tweets that Jake Peavy has been (once again) dealt to the White Sox for a package of minor leaguers.

Our View:

Here we go again. Why the White Sox would trade for Peavy again after he already vetoed a trade there is a mystery. There is also the fact that Peavy is currently on the DL with a torn tendon in his ankle. The deal is apparently official, but Peavy would once again have to waive his no trade clause. We can't see him changing his tune when his reasons for blocking the trade the first time haven't changed. This looks like wishful thinking by the White Sox.

July 16, 2009

Only one day after Padres GM Kevin Towers said that he could be out for the rest of the season, Jake Peavy was given a clean bill of health on his right ankle on Thursday, and could begin a rehab assignment in the very near future, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Peavy played catch on Thursday, but there is still no timetable for when he might return. Mid-August seems like the best bet. If someone dropped him in a panic yesterday, scoop him up as soon as possible.

July 15, 2009

Padres' GM Kevin Towers noted that Jake Peavy could be done for the remainder of the season, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Towers said, "I think it's 50-50 if Jake will pitch again this season."

Our View:

Peavy has been slowly recovering from a strained tendon his right ankle. The Padres will know more regarding Peavy's return after his cast comes off, and Towers said he would much rather have the ace hurler ready for 2010 rather than risk a more serious injury by letting him come back too soon.

July 9, 2009

MLB.com is reporting that Padres' ace Jake Peavy is still two weeks away from having his protective boot removed and being reexamined. Peavy isn't expected to be available to return before late August or early September.

Our View:

The healing process is moving along slowly for Peavy, but he remains on track tp return sometime in August. Fantasy owners should keep him on the roster, as he should be able to help your team out at some point this season.

June 30, 2009

Jake Peavy's return to the Padres has been delayed as he is once again sporting a protective boot on his ailing right ankle following a re-examination, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:

The ace hurler is now expected to be on the shelf for at least 5-6 more weeks. Peavy is not going to return to San Diego until mid-August, and shall remain patiently stashed on fantasy rosters.

June 29, 2009

Jake Peavy is hoping to begin a rehab assignment for his injured right ankle in three weeks, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

The Padres have pretty much faded from the 2009 playoff race already, and the most they could gain from a speedy Peavy return would be a deadline deal shipping him and his large salary out. More likely is that their ace returns sometime in August and they shape him up and audition him for a potential offseason trade.

June 16, 2009

SI.com is reporting that season-ending surgery is still a possibility for Padres' starter Jake Peavy. Peavy and the Padres' medical staff will do everything in their power to rehab the injury without surgery, but the possibility still exists that it could be necessary if the ankle does not properly heal.

Our View:

It is too early to tell right now, but the fact that surgery is even being mentioned can't be a good sign for Peavy. If he can avoid it, he will, but stay tuned in the coming weeks for more news on his progress.

June 13, 2009

Jake Peavy has been placed on the 15-day DL with a partially torn tendon in his right ankle, according to TSN. The club recalled pitcher Joe Thatcher from Triple-A Portland as the adjoining move.

Our View:

There is belief that Peavy could be on the shelf for as long as 12 weeks. He shall remain patiently stashed on fantasy rosters.

June 12, 2009

Updating an earlier report, the Associated Press confirms that Jake Peavy will be on the shelf for at least a month due to his ailing ankle.

Our View:

Peavy was scratched from Saturday's start against the Angels after an MRI revealed that the tibialis tendon behind his right ankle has a tear. He will sport a walking boot for around four weeks, and will be re-evaluated in two weeks before a timetable for his return can be determined.

June 12, 2009

Jake Peavy will reportedly miss at least a month and his ailing right ankle is in a cast, according to Corey Brock's (of MLB.com) twitter page.

Our View:

We will get further confirmation on Peavy's status. Stay tuned for updates regarding the Padres' ace hurler.

June 8, 2009

Jake Peavy allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits over seven innings in Monday's 6-3 win over Arizona at Petco Park. He issued two walks and racked up eight strikeouts.

Our View:

It was a good outing for the Padres' ace hurler, and he evened his season record to 6-6. Four of his wins were recorded at home.

June 5, 2009

Jake Peavy is slated to make his next start Monday against the Diamondbacks after only lasting one inning in his last outing due to a respiratory infection, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:

He was initially scheduled to pitch Sunday, but he is still not 100 percent, and the Padres are being cautious with their ace hurler.

June 4, 2009

Jake Peavy is still not 100 percent in his recovery from the flu, and the Padres' starter may be forced to miss his next start, according to the San Diego Union Tribune. Peavy's next scheduled start is Sunday at home against Arizona.

Our View:

It is still pretty early to make a decision on Peavy for Sunday, but apparently he is still very sick. We will have a better idea on his condition as Sunday approaches, but it seems very possible that Peavy could be unavailable for that game. We will update his condition as the weekend progresses, so stay tuned for news on his status.

June 2, 2009

Jake Peavy exited Tuesday's start with the flu after just one inning of work, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

This marks the shortest outing of his career. Josh Geer replaced him on the hill. Peavy should be recovered in time for his next start.

June 2, 2009

Padres ace Jake Peavy will not discuss with Philadelphia reporters whether he would approve a trade to the Phillies or not until after his Tuesday night start at Petco Park, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Our View:

While there is a better chance Peavy would approve a trade to Philadelphia than the White Sox, it is still unlikely. It is no secret that he prefers a trade to a team in "middle America," and along with Citizens Bank Park being very hitter friendly, Philadelphia is certainly not middle America. For now, just keep assuming Peavy is a Padre for the foreseeable future.

May 31, 2009

San Diego manager Bud Black has stated that Jake Peavy (ankle) will make his scheduled start on Tuesday against Philadelphia, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

Peavy wasn't his sharpest in his last start, giving up four runs off eight hits to Arizona, though he still remains a must-start as long as his coaching staff thinks he's healthy enough to take the mound.

May 30, 2009

The San Diego Tribune-Review reports that Jake Peavy is receiving a lot of treatment in an effort to limit the tendinitis in his ankle. He does not expect to miss a start.

Our View:

He was touched for eight hits and four runs over 6.1 innings in his last start, after which he first made the ailment public. Hopefully the injury is taken care of and it does not affect his performances going forward. However, tendinitis tends to be an injury that lingers without extended time off.

May 28, 2009

Jake Peavy indicated that he was dealing with ankle tendinitis during Wednesday's start against Arizona when he allowed four runs on eight hits over 6.1 innings, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

He is not concerned with the ailment, and the Padres' ace hurler expects to make his next scheduled start against the Phillies next week.

May 27, 2009

Jake Peavy was not sharp on Wednesday, but he managed to pick up the win. He allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk over 6.1 innings and struck out five in an 8-5 win over Arizona.

Our View:

This season the Padres' ace has not been vintage Peavy, but he's still been good. His ERA is at a respectable 3.67 and he's 5-5 on the year, but fantasy owners were expecting much more when they spent a high pick on Peavy.

May 23, 2009

Jake Peavy struck out 10 Cubs in six shutout innings of work as the Padres prevailed 4-0 on Friday. He allowed only two hits, but walked four batters while improving to 4-5.

Our View:

Peavy has not been at his best this season, but he is still very, very good. He ranks first in the NL with 79 strikeouts. While he has allowed three or more runs in six of his 10 starts, he has only done so once in his last five.

May 21, 2009

According to the Chicago Sun Times, Jake Peavy has officially used his no-trade clause to block a deal to the White Sox.

Our View:

Peavy had concerns about playing for Ozzie Guillen, moving to a homer-friendly park and leaving the NL, so this news is not surprising. He's is still vocal about leaving San Diego though, so don't be surprised if more rumors start swelling involving other possible suitors.

May 21, 2009

Jake Peavy is reportedly leaning toward using his no-trade clause to block a deal to the White Sox, according to BaseballProspectus.com.

Our View:

Peavy is believed to have concerns about playing for the volatile Ozzie Guillen in Chicago, and called former teammate Scott Linebrink to ask about the skipper. Peavy also wants to remain in the NL. Peavy was on the wish list of the cross-town rival Cubs in the offseason.

May 21, 2009

The Padres have reportedly agreed to trade Jake Peavy to the White Sox, according to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated.

Our View:

The deal hinges on Peavy's approval, as he has a no-trade clause in his contract. It is known that he prefers to stay in the NL. He may not want to play his home games at launching pad U.S. Cellular Field either.

May 21, 2009

The White Sox reportedly inquired about Padres' pitcher Jake Peavy, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:

Manager Bud Black met with Peavy, but the elite hurler noted that he still wishes to remain in the National League. Peavy may not want to play for sometimes volatile manager Ozzie Guillen as well.

May 20, 2009

Jake Peavy declined after the Padres offered him extra rest after throwing a complete game against the Reds in his last outing, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Peavy said, "That is why we get paid; I want to be out there as much as possible. I can see maybe later in the year if you are tired, but I feel like I'm in as good of shape as I've ever been."

Our View:

Peavy remains scheduled to face the Cubs this weekend at Petco Park. He is 3-5 so far, with a 3.82 ERA.

May 17, 2009

Jake Peavy allowed just one run in his complete game effort as the Padres defeated the Reds 3-1 on Sunday. He allowed just four hits, walked none, and struck out eight in the effort.

Our View:

The Padres had used every reliever in their bullpen on Saturday, so Peavy picked a great time for his first complete game of 2009. He needed 122 pitches to pull off the feat. He has allowed just six earned runs in his last four starts and has lowered his ERA from 5.75 to 3.82 in the process. His April struggles appear to be behind him.

May 6, 2009

Jake Peavy struck out 12 hitters in seven innings of work as the Padres fell 3-1 on Wednesday. He gave up four hits, three walks, and two runs while falling to 2-4 on the season.

Our View:

In his last two starts, Peavy has struck out 20 hitters in 15 innings and allowed just two earned runs. He has an 0-1 record to show for it. It looks like another hard luck season for Peavy as the Padres offense continues to flounder.

April 26, 2009

Jake Peavy struggled on the mound again Sunday. He allowed five runs on six hits and four walks over just five innings. He was dealt his third loss of the year as the Padres fell to the surprising Pirates 8-3.

Our View:

This is not the Jake Peavy we know and love. He struggled with his command on Sunday and has been knocked around in nearly every start this season. His best outing so far: 8.1 innings, seven hits, three earned runs. Very un-Peavy.

April 22, 2009

Jake Peavy allowed six earned runs in six innings as the Padres fell to the Giants 8-3 on Tuesday. The Padres ace gave up seven hits and three walks while striking out three batters.

Our View:

Through four appearances, Peavy has yet to give up less than three runs in a start. Still even in those other starts he was posting a solid strikeout rate. The slow start could be attributed to his participation in the World Baseball Classic, or perhaps the trade rumors that followed him throughout the offseason. Regardless, he has not looked like his usual self in 2009.

April 16, 2009

Jake Peavy was able to muster a win despite a relative off day against the Mets on Thursday, giving up three runs off six hits and four walks while striking out five in five innings of work.

Our View:

Though the ERA has been a bit above what you'd like to see from an ace like Peavy, he's still struck out over one batter per inning and has looked just fine through his first three starts this season.

April 12, 2009

The Brewers could make a move for Jake Peavy this season, according to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

The Brewers reeled in CC Sabathia last season, and would likely love to sign Peavy, who the division rival Cubs are interested in. This is merely speculation as of now.

April 11, 2009

Jake Peavy pitched into the ninth inning and got the win as the Padres double the Giants 6-3 on Saturday. Peavy struck out ten and allowed three runs on seven hits in 8.1 innings.

Our View:

Peavy had his game face on in this one, and while the three runs aren't what owners were looking for, the ten Ks are quite alright.

April 6, 2009

Jake Peavy struck out eight batters in seven innings while seven hits, two walks, and three earned runs as the Padres fell to the Dodgers 4-1 on Monday.

Our View:

Peavy was only 10-11 a year ago and he figures to pick up a few more hard luck losses this season. His peripherals will still look pretty good, but unfortunately they don't figure to be properly reflected in the win column.

April 6, 2009

GM Kevin Towers is hopeful that the Padres will contend this season and trading Jake Peavy will not come up, but the club may still be weak and the ace hurler's name could come up again at the trade deadline, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:

He accounts for close to 30 percent of the Padres' payroll, and the Dodgers and Cubs are known to interest both the Padres and Peavy. As for now, Peavy is set to start tonight's season opener at home against the Dodgers.

April 1, 2009

Jake Peavy tossed five shutout innings and only allowed four hits on Wednesday. He struck out three and won his third game of the spring.

Our View:

Peavy impressed again and has yet to allow a run with the Padres this spring. He must have gotten all his bad outings out of his system in the WBC. Expect big things from his this season.

March 27, 2009

Jake Peavy threw six shutout innings on Friday against the A's. He allowed only two hits, did not walk a man and struck out seven.

Our View:

Peavy was brilliant in his first start since rejoining the Padres. Consider him a top-tier fantasy starter. He may not get too many wins on the Padres, but that K-rate is sick good.

March 25, 2009

GM Doug Melvin killed the rumor that the Brewers are interested in acquiring Jake Peavy from San Diego, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Melvin simply stated, "We have not talked to them. There is nothing to it."

Our View:

Peavy's no-trade clause includes the Brewers, and we figured this was just a rumor.

March 24, 2009

Rumors have been spreading about the Brewers being interested in Padres ace Jake Peavy, but those thoughts were erased on Tuesday. "We haven't talked to them," general manager Bob Melvin tells the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "There's nothing to it."

Our View:

The Brewers need the pitching and have the prospects to entice the Padres, but Peavy's no-trade clause includes a move to Milwaukee. We don't see this happening.

March 14, 2009

Jake Peavy was hit hard by Puerto Rico in Team USA's 11-1 loss on Saturday. The starter lasted just two innings, gave up six hits, walked two, and allowed six earned runs.

Our View:

Peavy has been a disappointment to this point in the WBC as he boasts a rotund 14.40 ERA. He managed to throw 29 of 54 pitches for strikes, which is a far worse ratio than we are used to seeing.

March 12, 2009

According to the Chicago Tribune, the sale of the San Diego Padres to Jeffrey Moorad could get in the way of a possible Jake Peavy trade to the Cubs. It is reported that Moorad may not have his finances together to get the deal done.

Our View:

Peavy has repeatedly expressed his interest to pitch for a contender, and thinks the Cubs would be a good fit. If this deal ever does go through, his fantasy value would certainly rise as he could pile up wins with the loaded Cubs' lineup protecting him.

March 1, 2009

Jake Peavy earned the win in Sunday's Cactus League game against the Cubs, allowing just one hit in three innings.

Our View:

The Cubs got to see first hand on Sunday what they could've added to their rotation with a trade for Peavy. A deal could still go down for him this year, especially at the deadline. Stay tuned.

ESPN.com reports that the Cubs and Padres could resume Jake Peavy trade talks at some point soon. The report suggests that the three young pitchers they acquired from the Indians in return for Mark DeRosa and Wednesday's acquisition of Aaron Heilman put the Cubs in better place to put together a satisfactory offer for Peavy.

Our View:

The Peavy trade talks were among the hottest topics of the Winter Meetings, and it appears the rumors will begin swirling again soon. Peavy is among the most dominant pitchers in the game. Over 1,261 innings thrown in his career, he has an impressive 3.25 ERA to go with 1,256 strikeouts.

Cubs general manager Jim Hendry is expected to approach the new owners about about increasing the payroll. His goal is to make a trade for Jake Peavy, the Daily Herald reports.

Our View:

The Cubs recently traded away one potential piece of a Peavy package in outfielder Felix Pie, but they could still put together a package involving top prospect Josh Vitters. At this point, the Peavy talks have fluctuated so much that it almost seems pointless to talk about it until a deal is actually done.

January 12, 2009

Right-handed ace Jake Peavy was among the list of 22 MLB players who have expressed interest in playing in this spring's World Baseball Classic, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

The big question remains as to what major-league team Peavy will be playing for when the WBC kicks off on Mar. 5. At this late stage of free agency, by default, the Chicago Cubs would have to be named the leading candidate to acquire the services of the 2007 Cy Young Award winner. The club announced Friday it would expand its payroll in order to reel in more talent, possibly Peavy.

January 9, 2009

The Daily Herald reports that a new Cubs' owner may increase their available payroll for 2009, which would allow them to get back involved in Jake Peavy trade talks.

Our View:

The report is clearly speculation at this point, but it seems a new owner would certainly like to end Chicago's "curse" as soon as possible. The addition of Peavy would make the Cubs a devastating force in the National League.

January 9, 2009

Jake Peavy will represent the United States in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Peavy pitched for Team USA in the 2006 tournament, and enjoyed the experience as a highlight of his career.

January 7, 2009

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that sources close to the Cubs expect GM Jim Hendry to revisit Jake Peavy talks now that the Cubs have shed some salary with the Jason Marquis trade to Colorado.

Our View:

Hendry noted that he is looking for another starting pitcher prior to opening day. As other options, the Sun-Times suggests Braden Looper and Tim Redding would fit better financially for Chicago than Derek Lowe.

January 2, 2009

With the Cubs trades of Jason Marquis and Mark DeRosa, there has been speculation that they will get back into the thick of talks for Jake Peavy, but Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that is not likely to happen.

Our View:

The Cubs have cleared money by moving Marquis and DeRosa, but it is rumored the money was cleared for them to acquire Milton Bradley, not Peavy.
