The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the Cubs have signed center fielder Marlon Byrd for three seasons and $15 million.
Byrd is a career .279 hitter with 60 home runs over eight seasons. He is the heavy favorite to become the Cubs' everyday center fielder, but it still may be difficult for the 32-year-old to match last season's career highs, including his 547 at-bats.
Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com tweets that the Cubs are close to a three-year deal with Marlon Byrd.
Stop us if this sounds familiar: a Rangers outfielder who has reached 420 at-bats just twice in his eight-year career, becomes a free agent after his best season and signs on with the Cubs for three seasons. Yeah, Milton Bradley was this guy last season and that divorce was ugly. Byrd does not have the publicized anger issues, but he is the one major leaguer who openly admits that he still obtains "a variety of pills and powders from (Victor) Conte." There's no word of the price tag, but hopefully he'll come much cheaper than Bradley. Byrd could help solve the Cubs' problem of finding an everyday center fielder.
Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News believes that with the Cubs unloading Milton Bradley, Marlon Byrd will soon be wearing Cubbie blue.
With Bradley out of the way and Mike Cameron having signed with Boston, the Cubs are free to continue their pursuit of Byrd. Regardless of where he lands though, the Rangers will receive a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds of next year's amateur draft as compensation.
The Cubs are believed to be chasing Marlon Byrd now that Mike Cameron took a deal with Boston, according to FOX Sports.
The Cubs wanted to add Cameron to their outfield, and are still trying to get payroll flexibility by dealing Milton Bradley, who is slated to earn $21MM before the end of the 2011 campaign. Byrd is coming off a good year in Texas, and would be a nice addition for Chicago.
Marlon Byrd is not expected to accept Texas' arbitration offer, according to MLB.com.
Byrd has stated that he'd like to be back with Texas, but he may very well get more money somewhere else. Byrd hit .283 with 20 home runs last season and actually hit for a better average each of the previous two seasons. He's a fine hitter who could be well worth a late-round pick in drafts next season should he land on a team that would give him a starting gig.
The Rangers have offered arbitration to outfielder Marlon Byrd, according to MLBblogs.com.
Byrd is a Type B free agent, meaning he Rangers would receive compensation with a supplememental first round pick if he inks with another team. Jermaine Dye is believed to be an option if Texas does not retain Byrd with a new deal.
The Rangers would like to re-sign outfielder Marlon Byrd, but realize that he may find a better deal elsewhere on the free agent market, according to MLB.com. GM Jon Daniels said, "Marlon was obviously a big part of our club. To his credit, he has put himself in a position to see what is out there, and he is going to explore that. We are going to explore our own alternatives, including the guys we already have. In a perfect world, we would like to have Marlon back. It is just not going to happen in the exclusive window period, if it is going to happen at all."
A right-handed bat is a top priority for Texas, and the source states that the club may target Jermaine Dye as a stopgap if they do not lock up Byrd with a new deal.
