Newsbreakers

December 23, 2009

According to MLBlogs.com, the Rockies are interested in free agent right-hander Tim Redding.

Our View:

Redding was non-tendered by the Mets earlier this month. Even though he had a poor season last year at 3-6 with a 5.10 ERA over 30 games (17 starts), the Rockies could use him as insurance for their rotation or a long-relief arm in the bullpen.

December 12, 2009

Starting pitcher Tim Redding led the list of non-tendered Mets on Saturday, according to David Lennon of Newsday.

Our View:

Also not offered contracts were outfielders Cory Sullivan and Jeremy Reed, and pitcher Lance Broadway. All are likely finished with the Amazins.

September 30, 2009

The Mets got something on Wednesday night that they rarely saw all season - a quality start from Tim Redding, who allowed just one run in six innings. However, then they got something they had seen six times before - a blown save from Francisco Rodriguez, who allowed a walk-off grand slam, as the Mets lost 7-4 in Washington.

Our View:

Redding has actually had quite an impressive September, going 1-2 with a 3.19 ERA in six starts. He still likely won't be back with the Amazins in 2010, however.

September 25, 2009

Tim Redding was tagged for four earned runs on six hits over six innings in Friday's 6-5 win at Florida. He had four walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:

Redding struggled on the hill, and ended the night with a no-decision as the game was tied at 3-3 when he exited. He fell off track after only allowing one earned run in each of his previous two starts.

September 19, 2009

Tim Redding bumped his record to 3-6 on Saturday as the Mets downed the Nationals 3-2. Redding went seven innings and allowed on run on four hits while walking two and striking out four.

Our View:

Redding has actually been very good over his last two starts, which is a nice change from ealier this season. He is by no means a fantasy pitcher, but at least he is giving his team a chance to win on days he pitches.

September 13, 2009

Tim Redding deserved better than being handed his sixth loss of the season on Sunday. He only allowed one run on three hits and two walks over six innings, but was outdueled by Pedro Martinez and the Mets fell 1-0 to the Phillies.

Our View:

Redding is now 1-2 since rejoining the Mets rotation on August 22nd, but he has been solid in four of his five outings. If the Mets weren't marred by an insane amount of injuries this season, he wouldn't be starting, but he's done a nice job lately of filling in.

September 8, 2009

Tim Redding allowed four runs and nine baserunners in five innings on Tuesday, taking the loss as the Mets lost 4-2 to the Marlins.

Our View:

Redding is about as far from a viable fantasy starter as they come, and will continue to not pitch effectively as the season winds down.

September 2, 2009

Tim Redding had a nice outing against the Rockies on Wednesday. He allowed just two runs on seven hits and a walk over 6.2 innings while striking out six in a 5-2 loss.

Our View:

After being one of the worst pitchers on the planet from May through July, Redding rebounded in August and even worked his way back in to the starting rotation after being demoted. He has been solid in his last three straight starting affairs.

August 27, 2009

Tim Redding earned a rare win on Thursday as the Mets downed the Marlins 10-3. He allowed three runs on three solo homers over 6.2 innings, and surrendered just five hits and a pair of walks in total.

Our View:

The outing was arguably Redding's best since June, and he was rewarded with a victory in just his second start since rejoining the rotation. The three homers allowed isn't nearly as scary since he served them up with no one on base.

August 22, 2009

Tim Redding was outstanding in his start on Saturday, but he did not factor into the decision as the Mets fell 4-1 to the Phillies. Redding went five innings and did not allow a run while surrendering only one hit, walking three, and striking out four.

Our View:

Redding couldn't go more than five after not starting for awhile, but he was excellent while he was out there. Redding struggled badly in his last stint in the rotation, but this work against a smoking hot Phillies' lineup is impressive. He will need to put a few of these together if fantasy owners are going to take a chance on him again.

August 20, 2009

Tim Redding will take the recently released Livan Hernandez's turn in the Mets rotation on Saturday, according to the New York Post's Bart Hubbuch.

Our View:

It will come against the Phillies. Not good news for a pitcher with a 1-4 record and 6.53 ERA in 71.2 innings this season.

August 1, 2009

Mets' skipper Jerry Manuel noted that Tim Redding or a Triple-A hurler will likely start Monday's game against Arizona, according to Bart Hubbuch's (New York Post) twitter page.

Our View:

Redding is already on the Mets' roster, so he would likely have an edge to start. If Redding does start, he should only be considered for deeper fantasy leagues though.

July 27, 2009

Tim Redding is likely to remain with the Mets for the rest of the season, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:

The Amazins had been prepared to release the journeyman righty, who has posted a 7.16 ERA in 55.1 innings this year, but were precluded from doing so by injuries. Put it this way with Redding: things are likely to get a whole lot worse before they get better.

July 19, 2009

Tim Redding was hit with his fourth loss of the season after taking over for the injured Fernando Nieve on Sunday as the Mets fell to the Braves 7-1. Redding went three innings and allowed five runs (two earned) on four hits while walking three.

Our View:

There have been rumors going around that the Mets are planning to release Redding, but the injury to Nieve may force the team to keep him around. His performance today did nothing to merit a return to the rotation, so his status with the team is still in flux going forward.

July 18, 2009

The Mets are planning on releasing Tim Redding, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:

Redding was removed from the rotation when Oliver Perez returned from the disabled list, and with a 7.22 ERA this season, is no longer of any use to the Mets. He is not an option in any format.

July 4, 2009

According to Metsblog.com, the team has removed pitcher Tim Redding from the rotation to make room for Oliver Perez. Redding will be used as a long reliever going forward.

Our View:

Redding forced the Mets to make this move with his awful play over the past few starts, and he has no one to blame but himself. Any fantasy value he had is gone now, and will remain so unless he gets another shot in the rotation.

July 2, 2009

Tim Redding was awful again on Thursday, pitching just 2.1 innings and surrendering five earned runs, but, amazingly, the Mets offense bailed him out as the Amazins won 9-8 in ten innings in Pittsburgh.

Our View:

Redding shouldn't be in the Mets rotation much longer, as both John Maine and Oliver Perez are due back from the disabled list soon. He is not a viable fantasy option in any format for any reason.

June 27, 2009

Tim Redding was his mediocre self against the Yankees on Saturday, dropping to 1-3 after giving up five runs off six hits and two walks while striking out six in 5.1 innings.

Our View:

Redding continues to toil in mediocrity in New York's starting rotation and cannot be relied upon as a fantasy starter, regardless of your league size or format.

June 24, 2009

Skipper Jerry Manuel indicated that Tim Redding will start Saturday against the Yankees, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:

Oliver Perez or John Maine will not be ready to return to the Mets by Saturday, so Redding will make another start in the rotation. Maine will return as a starter, while Perez may work out of the bullpen for a while until he proves he belongs in the rotation.

June 22, 2009

Tim Redding gave up four earned runs on five hits over seven innings in Monday's 6-4 win over the Cardinals at Citi Field. He had one walk and four strikeouts, and was tagged for two homers.

Our View:

It was not a solid outing for Redding, but his teammates provided enough offensive support for him to earn his first win of the season over seven starts. It was previously reported that Redding could be moved to the bullpen when John Maine is ready to return from his shoulder ailment.

June 22, 2009

Tim Redding could be moved to the Mets' bullpen when John Maine is ready to return from his shoulder ailment, according to the Star-Ledger.

Our View:

Redding failed to impress the Mets, as he is 0-2 with a 6.27 ERA and 1.61 WHIP over six starts. His fantasy stock would obviously drop even lower if he is taken out of the rotation.

June 11, 2009

Tim Redding allowed three earned runs on six hits over seven innings in Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Phillies at Citi Field. He had no walks and fired six strikeouts.

Our View:

The game was tied 3-3 when Redding left the game, so he takes a no-decision. Redding is yet to win over five starts with New York, and has a 6.18 ERA. He is not worth using outside of deeper NL-only leagues for now.

June 5, 2009

Tim Redding only allowed one earned run on six hits over six innings in Friday's 3-1 win at Washington. He had two walks and two strikeouts.

Our View:

He exited the game tied 1-1, and ended the night with a no-decision rather than a win. This marks his best outing of the season, and Redding could be worth consideration for fantasy duty in his next start.

June 3, 2009

Wednesday's Mets-Pirates game has been postponed due to rain according to the New York Daily News. Tim Redding's start has been pushed back to Friday against the Nationals.

Our View:

The Mets could have completely skipped Redding's start, especially given his 2009 struggles. Through three starts, he has a 9.21 ERA and 0-2 record. For now, he should be avoided in fantasy leagues.

May 30, 2009

Tim Redding pitched poorly for the second straight outing as the Mets fell to the Marlins 7-3 on Sunday. All seven runs came off of Redding, who gave up eight hits and two walks.

Our View:

This makes 13 earned runs over his last 8.2 innings of work. Suddenly, Oliver Perez is looking like a decent option for the Mets rotation. However, with Perez experiencing a setback in his rehab, Redding should make at least a few more starts. You should stay away of him in fantasy leagues.

May 18, 2009

Tim Redding has been activated from the DL to start tonight's game against the Dodgers, according to the Star-Ledger. He has been rehabbing from shoulder fatique. He said, "I feel like I am as strong as I could possibly be right now, and I am looking forward to Monday night. These guys are on a roll, and I want to fit back in with my teammates and contribute."

Our View:

Redding replaces the struggling Oliver Perez in the rotation, and could stick around if he proves to be effective. Redding is worth targeting in NL-only and deeper mixed leagues.

May 15, 2009

Tim Redding will be activated from the DL to start Monday's game against the Dodgers, according to the New York Daily News. He has been recovering from shoulder fatigue.

Our View:

Redding will be taking Oliver Perez's spot in the rotation, and could keep the job if he is effective. He is worth consideration in NL-only and deeper mixed leagues. The Mets currently lead the NL East with a 19-15 record.

May 6, 2009

The New York Daily News reports that pitcher Tim Redding appears ready to join the Mets after throwing 85 pitches and topping out at 91-mph on Wednesday at Triple-A Buffalo. He gave up one run on six hits while striking out five. He could join the Mets rotation next week.

Our View:

Redding is in Triple-A due to right shoulder fatigue, but he appears to be over that condition. Redding was not very effective in 2008, but he could benefit from pitching in the spacious Citi Field.

May 1, 2009

Tim Redding is slated to pitch in an extended spring training game at some point this weekend, according to the New York Post. He is recovering from right shoulder fatigue.

Our View:

Redding could start a rehab assignment soon. He would likely work out of the bullpen as a long-reliever upon his return to New York, but could start if the Mets need an injury replacement in the rotation.

April 28, 2009

Tim Redding (shoulder fatigue) will remain in St. Lucie for his next start, according to the New York Daily News. He is slated for around 75 pitches and five innings, and could start as early as Thursday.

Our View:

Redding will likely serve as a long-reliever out of the Mets' bullpen upon his return, but could work his way into the rotation if one of their current starters struggles or suffers an injury. Oliver Perez is struggling, but he is still scheduled to make his next start.

April 26, 2009

Pitcher Tim Redding (shoulder) worked four scoreless innings in an extended spring training game on Saturday. He will make a start for Triple-A Buffalo later this week and could be activated by the Mets in roughly 10 days, the New York Daily News reports.

Our View:

Every Mets starter save Johan Santana has been cautioned about potentially losing their starting spot, and Redding could step into the rotation when he is ready. As of now, Redding is only assured of being a long reliever, but we'll see how things play out over the coming week or so.

April 22, 2009

Tim Redding, who is recovering from right shoulder fatigue, pitched in an extended spring training game Monday, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:

Redding will make another appearance this weekend. He may be ready to return to the Mets by mid-May, but will likely serve in the bullpen initially.

April 12, 2009

Tim Redding, who is recovering from a sore right shoulder, is targeting an early-May return to the mound, according to the New York Post.

Our View:

Redding will throw his third bullpen session Monday before making his first rehab start with Single-A St. Lucie on April 20. Redding will likely serve as a long-reliever when he returns to the Mets, hence limiting his fantasy value.

March 14, 2009

Tim Redding will start the season on the disabled list with shoulder fatigue, according to the NY Daily News. He is not experiencing any pain, and an MRI is not necessary.

Our View:

Redding will need to rehab before returning to the mound, but his fantasy stock already took a hit when he was slated for a long-relief role this season.

March 13, 2009

According to the New York Daily News, Tim Redding has been slated for long relief. Livan Hernandez is the current favorite to earn the fifth spot in the Mets' rotation.

Our View:

His last start likely erased any chance of earning a rotation spot, as he was shelled for nine runs over two innings.

March 12, 2009

Tim Redding was completely blown up by Florida on Thursday, allowing nine runs off eight hits, three that left the yard, and one walk while failing to strike anybody out in two innings of relief.

Our View:

That's not quite the type of effort you want to put forth when you're battling for the final spot in a starting rotation. Redding must be a whole lot better his next time out if he's to re-position himself in the competition.

March 5, 2009

According to the New York Post, Tim Redding faced batters for the first time this spring. Recovering from off season toe surgery, Redding looks set to start on Sunday.

Our View:

Redding is expected to be the favorite in the fight for the Mets' fifth starter spot, but doesn't add much fantasy value even if he wins the job. A possible option in deep NL-only leagues.

February 26, 2009

Tim Redding is dealing with some tightness in his back and shoulder, according to MetsCitiBlog.com.

Our View:

Redding needs to be healthy while competing with Freddy Garcia, Livan Hernandez and Jon Niese for the fifth spot in the Mets' rotation. Redding expects to hold the fifth spot, and would be worth consideration for deeper NL-only leagues if he does.

February 13, 2009

Tim Redding will have to compete with Freddy Garcia, but Redding ultimately expects to be the fifth starter in the Mets' rotation, according to the NY Post. Redding said, "It is my assumption, and I have been told that I have been brought in here to be a starting pitcher - bottom line."

Our View:

Redding would be pushed into a relief role if Garcia beats him out for the rotation spot. Whoever wins the fifth spot will have a solid supporting cast to succeed, making him worthy of consideration in NL-only leagues.

January 30, 2009

Tim Redding noted that the Pirates were interested in him before he inked with the Mets, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View:

Redding will have a chance to compete for a spot at the back of the Mets' rotation, and will have a much better supporting cast to succeed by joining them and not the Pirates.

January 10, 2009

Newly-signed pitcher Tim Redding will likely compete with Jon Niese for the fifth spot in the Mets rotation, the New York Post reports.

Our View:

This evaluation assumes the Mets sign Derek Lowe, Oliver Perez, Randy Wolf, or someone else to join Johan Santana, John Maine, and Mike Pelfrey. Niese is a promising 22-year-old lefty, and the Redding deal likely means he can head back to Triple-A for more seasoning.

January 9, 2009

As expected, Tim Redding has agreed to a one-year, $2.25-million deal with the Mets, according to the Denver Post. Redding can make an additional $700,000 in incentives for starts and $500,000 for relief appearances.

Our View:

Redding will provide favorable depth near the back of the Mets' rotation, and notably went 3-1 with a 3.41 ERA over five starts against the division rival Phillies last season.

January 9, 2009

The Mets are closing in on a deal with Tim Redding, according to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated. Redding is expected to receive a one-year deal for $2.25 million, plus incentives.

Our View:

The Mets will still try to sign Derek Lowe, Oliver Perez or Randy Wolf after closing the deal with Redding.

January 9, 2009

Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated lists the Rangers as a candidate for free agent hurler Tim Redding.

Our View:

Heyman also lists the Dodgers, Brewers and Rockies, but the top contenders to reel in Redding are believed to still be the Mets and Orioles.

January 8, 2009

Tim Redding apparently has been offered an official contract by the Mets, according to the New York Post. "[Minaya's] thinking is he would like to bring in six or seven starters this spring because of what happened last year," the source said.

Our View:

No numbers were discussed in the piece, and there is only a "source" named as the genesis of the report, but given that Redding is known to be on the team's radar, we have no reason to dispute the current report. The team is still said to be in on the Derek Lowe sweepstakes, and Pedro Martinez is also floating around.

January 7, 2009

Tim Redding is believed to be out of the Rockies price range now that they have acquired Jason Marquis, according to the Denver Post.

Our View:

The Rockies had been actively pursuing Redding. The Mets and Orioles have also been rumored to be after Redding.

January 7, 2009

Mike Fitzpatrick of the AP believes the Mets made an offer to hurler Tim Redding.

Our View:

It is uncertain what the Mets offered him, or if the rumor is even true. Redding would be a nice fit for the back of the Mets' rotation, and he notably went 3-1 with a 3.41 ERA over five starts against the division rival Phillies last season.

January 5, 2009

The Rockies are still interested in Tim Redding, despite acquiring Jason Marquis through a trade, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Redding would help the Rockies bolster a rotation that struggled mightily during last season as they bottomed out after making the World Series in 2007.
