Newsbreakers

October 3, 2009

Alex Rios went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two stolen bases in Chicago's 5-1 win over the Tigers.

Our View:

Rios has been a huge disappointment this season, especially since he was traded to Chicago, but he got to play spoiler on Saturday. The Tigers are now in a first place tie with the Twins after the loss to Rios and the Sox.

September 19, 2009

According to the Chicago Tribune, outfielders Alex Rios and Jermaine Dye are back in the Saturday's lineup for the White Sox.

Our View:

Rios and Dye both spent Friday's game on the bench, but they get back in the action Saturday for Jake Peavy's debut. Looks like the Sox want to stack the lineup and ensure a "W" for Peavy in his first start. Playing the Royals will certainly help.

August 22, 2009

Right fielder Alex Rios and first baseman Paul Konerko are both out of the White Sox lineup vs. the Orioles on Saturday, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

Just regular rest for both. Scott Podsednik is taking Rios' spot, while Mark Kotsay is spelling Konerko.

August 19, 2009

Alex Rios' first White Sox home run was one of the three the team hit off of Royals ace Zack Greinke on Wednesday, as the South Siders won 4-2 at home.

Our View:

Rios' two-hit day upped his average to .275 in seven White Sox games. He now has as many hits, eight, as strikeouts in his new black-and-white dubs.

August 16, 2009

Alex Rios went 0-for-4 on Sunday and stranded four runners in the White Sox' 3-2 loss to the A's.

Our View:

Rios now has just three hits in five games since joining the White Sox. The new addition is hitting just .130 with one RBI and one extra-base hit.

August 13, 2009

Alex Rios went 1-for-6 in his White Sox debut and could only muster a meaningless single.

Our View:

The Sox were hoping their high-priced new addition could become an instant hero, but Rios was shut down as the Mariners took home a win after a 14-inning marathon. Rios owners were hoping a change of scenery would get him going this season, but so far it hasn't worked. Stay tuned for game two.

August 12, 2009

Alex Rios will make his White Sox debut on Wednesday against the Mariners and will hit third in the lineup.

Our View:

Recently claimed off the waiver wire from the Blue Jays, Rios looks to be the long term replacement for Jermaine Dye. He hit .264 with 14 homers and 62 RBI for the Jays.

August 11, 2009

According to MLB.com, new White Sox's outfielder Alex Rios is expected to join the team in Seattle on Tuesday. Rios is not expected to be in the lineup until Wednesday, however.

Our View:

Rios owners should be happy about this trade, because he looks to be a much better offensive option hitting in Chicago's hitter-friendly park. You may want to take him out tonight, but get him back in tomorrow and watch for a rise in numbers down the stretch.

August 10, 2009

The White Sox have reportedly claimed Alex Rios from Toronto, according to Tyler Kepner's twitter page. Toronto will not receive any compensation in return, and the club is just pleased to unload his contract.

Our View:

Adding Rios was a good move for Chicago, as Jermaine Dye is going to become a free agent after the season, and they could presently use some outfield depth for the bench. Rios' power was hindered while playing his home games at pitcher-friendly Rogers Centre, and should benefit in that department at launching pad U.S. Cellular Field.

August 9, 2009

The Chicago Tribune reports that the White Sox are the most likely team to have placed a waiver claim on Alex Rios late last week.

Our View:

There still aren't any concrete clues as to who claimed the star-crossed outfielder, but the White Sox have shown a willingness to take on large payroll additions before, and with Jermaine Dye a free agent at season's end, Rios would make sense in the Sox's notable hitter friendly park.

August 8, 2009

Alex Rios went 1-for-3 with a home run, a run scored, and two RBI in the Blue Jays' 3-2 win over the Orioles on Saturday.

Our View:

Rios has been getting hot as of late, and with trade rumors swirling around him, he is picking it up at the right time. Rios has traditionally been a streaky hitter, so ride him while he is hot.

August 7, 2009

The Giants do not appear to be the team who has claimed Alex Rios off waivers, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

Speculation has focused heavily on the Giants because of their past interest in Rios, but a Giants official told the paper, "Any player would have a hard time getting to us because of where we are in the standings." The Giants, by virtue of having the third best record in Rios' opposite league, would be the third to last team to get an opportunity at claiming Rios. It could still happen, but now sounds much less likely.

August 7, 2009

The Mets, as has been speculated, are not the team that has claimed Alex Rios off waivers, according the New York Post's Joel Sherman.

Our View:

The Giants have long been rumored as a possible landing spot for Rios, with a Tim Lincecum for Rios swap even once being discussed, but other than that, there have been almost no indications as to whom might have claimed him. Regardless, don't expect him and his albatross contract to be staying in Toronto unless the Jays cant get absolutely nothing for him in return.

August 7, 2009

ESPN.com is reporting that there has been a waiver claim made on Blue Jays' outfielder Alex Rios. The Jays will have until Tuesday to make a decision to either trade him, pull him back, or give him away for nothing.

Our View:

It seems fairly certain that the Jays will either try to work out a trade with whoever made the claim or pull him back if nothing gets worked out, because they won't give him away for nothing. Rios has been disappointing again this season, but he still has the potential to be an All-Star.

July 25, 2009

Alex Rios went 2-for-5 with a homer and a pair of RBI in the Blue Jays' 10-9 extra-inning loss on Saturday.

Our View:

Rios has been a fantasy disappointment this season, but he's shown signs of heating up lately. In the month of July the talented outfielder has hit three homers, driven in 14, swiped five bags and has an OBP of .349. If you've been stashing him on your roster, now is the time to get him in the lineup.

July 23, 2009

Alex Rios doubled and stole three bases in Thursday's 5-4 loss to Cleveland. He was 1-for-3 on the day.

Our View:

This was supposed to be the year Rios put it all together, but the 5-tool outfielder has slumped most of the season. Still, it's nice to see him rack up some steals. His 2009 line: .265-11-49-18.

July 14, 2009

There is a rumor going around at the All-Star festivities that the Blue Jays and Pirates have been discussing a deal that would send outfielder Alex Rios and cash to Pittsburgh in exchange for starting pitcher Paul Maholm, according to Piratesreport.com. The Blue Jays would likely have to eat some of Rios' contract in the deal.

Our View:

This is just a rumor, but it would seem to make sense for both teams. Rios has underachieved badly this season, but he still has the potential to be an All-Star caliber player. The Jays would be getting a solid starting pitcher in return, and would be off the hook for some of Rios' contract. We will let you know if anything materializes from these discussions.

July 10, 2009

Alex Rios went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored in tonight's 2-0 win at Baltimore.

Our View:

Rios has a hit in three straight games, and recorded his fourth multi-hit game of July. Keep him active in fantasy leagues while hot.

July 6, 2009

Alex Rios only went 1-for-5 Monday at Yankee Stadium, but delivered the Jays biggest hit of the day with his third inning three-run home run. The Jays escaped with a 7-6 win.

Our View:

So far this season, Rios' most memorable game was June 4 when he managed to strike out five times against the Angels. But he has shown signs of life of late (seven RBIs in his last four games), and could finally be coming around. You could buy low on (very, very low, however), or maybe add him, if his previous owner got frustrated and dropped him, if you need to shake up your outfield. He's no sure bet, but he has a proven record of producing.

June 30, 2009

MLB.com is reporting that Blue Jays' outfielder Alex Rios was given the day off on Monday due to his recent struggles at the plate. Manager Cito Gaston said that Rios will return to the lineup Tuesday night.

Our View:

Rios is hitting just .133 with no homers and four RBI in his last eight games, and the struggles just keep on coming. Rios could be a candidate for a breakout second half, but right now he is killing fantasy owners. If you have another suitable option, you may want to sit Rios until he heats up.

June 27, 2009

According to the Toronto Sun, Alex Rios was bumped down to seventh in the order on Friday.

Our View:

Rios' recent struggles (eight for his last 38) and altogether disappointing season have pushed him further and further down in the lineup. Many pundits were predicting a breakout season for Rios, expecting him to finally "put it all together" but he's done the opposite. The fantasy frustration looks likely to continue.

June 13, 2009

Alex Rios was perfect at the dish on Saturday, but it wasn't enough as the Blue Jays fell to the Marlins by a score of 6-5. Rios went 4-for-4 with a home run, a stolen base, two runs scored, and two RBI.

Our View:

Rios is starting to show the ability that everyone has expected from him all year. Today was a perfect example of is ability to hit for average, power, and steal bases. Obviously you can't expect days like this very often, but don't be shocked if he starts to be very good on a regular basis.

June 4, 2009

Alex Rios had an afternoon to forget on Thursday in the Blue Jays' 6-5 loss to the Angels. Rios went 0-for-5 with five strikeouts in the game. When asked to comment, manager Cito Gaston replied: "If he doesn't watch it, they might call his cell tonight. That's how much they had his number."

Our View:

Wow, and you thought you had a rough day at the office. Not only did Rios strike out five times, but then he gets burned by his manager afterward. Rios has been hitting well as of late, so this is just an off day. Expect him to bounce back this weekend.

June 2, 2009

Alex Rios went 1-for-4 with a solo homer in Tuesday's 6-4 win over the Angels at the Rogers Centre.

Our View:

Rios extended his hitting streak to seven games, with two homers and five RBI over the span.

May 31, 2009

Alex Rios went 1-for-3 with a home run, a run scored, and an RBI in the Blue Jays' 8-2 loss to the Red Sox.

Our View:

Rios looks to be getting hot. After a 4-for-4 showing last night, he came back today with a home run. When this guy puts it together, he can be one of the better fantasy players in baseball. Get him in while he is hitting right now.

May 30, 2009

Alex Rios went 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored as the Blue Jays won 5-3 over Boston on Saturday.

Our View:

Rios has a double in each of his last three games. While he has picked up his hitting of late, especially today, his run production remains below expectations. He has 24 RBI and 25 runs scored on the season.

May 14, 2009

Alex Rios launched his fourth home run on Thursday as the Blue Jays fell to the Yankees 3-2. Rios was 2-for-3 with the homer, a run, and an RBI in the game.

Our View:

Rios may be turning the corner this season, as this was his second homer this week. When Rios finally takes off, he has the ability to be one of the better fantasy outfielders in the game. We will have to see if this is the beginning of that turn.

May 10, 2009

Alex Rios went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI, and a run scored in Toronto's 5-0 win over the A's on Sunday.

Our View:

Rios had just one hit in his last 12 at bats and just one home run in his last 16 games. We are not thrilled about his 29 strikeouts compared to his 11 walks, but we expect that ratio to get better and the rest of his numbers should follow.

May 3, 2009

Alex Rios had a home run and a double in the Blue Jays' 4-3 win on Sunday over the Orioles. Rios finished 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Our View:

Rios has had a slow start to the season, but he has all the tools to be an elite fantasy outfielder. Buy low on him right now if you can, because once he begins to get on track he will deliver with power, RBI, and stolen bases.

April 23, 2009

Alex Rios hit his first home run of the season in a 5-2 win over the Rangers on Thursday. It was a two-run shot.

Our View:

Rios has had a miserable start to the season, but is starting to pick it up as of late. Hopefully the home runs start coming in bunches now, and it's nice to see him finally reach double digit RBI.

April 22, 2009

Alex Rios was 4-for-6 on Wednesday night in Toronto's extra innings win over the Rangers. He also added two RBI.

Our View:

Rios has gotten off to a slow start this year, but he should still be considered as an upper-level fantasy outfielder. Once he gets going, he will provide homers, RBI, and stolen bases. Buy low on him right now if you can.

April 10, 2009

Alex Rios was 2-for-5 with four RBI in Toronto's 13-7 win over Cleveland. The slugfest was delayed due to rain, but the Jays held on to win it.

Our View:

Rios should be a strong fantasy performer once again. He's still waiting for his first home run and first stolen base of the season, but his four RBI contribution Friday should be a nice appetizer for fantasy owners.

April 6, 2009

Alex Rios was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two walks as the Blue Jays beat the Tigers 12-5 on Monday.

Our View:

Rios should be able to improve on his good numbers from 2008 as long as he stays healthy. A lot of his production will be determined by how well the hitters around him perform.

April 2, 2009

Alex Rios was 2-for-4 with three RBI against the Tigers on Thursday.

Our View:

Rios has averaged 18 home runs and 82 RBI the last three seasons. If he's able to receive a little protection in that Toronto lineup, he could be a scary good fantasy pickup capable of producing in multiple ways.

March 21, 2009

Alex Rios went 2-for-3 with a run scored in Saturday's 9-7 loss to the Astros. He hit a single and a double.

Our View:

He raised his spring average to an even .400. Rios should be drafted among the top 15-20 fantasy outfielders, and has the talent to climb higher.

March 17, 2009

Alex Rios was 2-for-3 in Puerto Rico's loss to team USA Tuesday night. He homered, drove in two, scored two runs and stole a base.

Our View:

Rios looked strong in the losing effort and appears to be finding his stroke after struggling early in the WBC. He is a solid fantasy outfielder any way you slice it.

March 11, 2009

Alex Rios went 1-for-2 with two walks, a triple, a RBI, and a run scored as Puerto Rico defeated Netherlands on Wednesday.

Our View:

Rios is a strong producer in fantasy leagues. He only hit 15 home runs last season, but he made up for it with 32 stolen bases.

March 4, 2009

Alex Rios had a big game for Puerto Rico against the Rays on Wednesday, going 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, and scoring one run.

Our View:

Rios is a great fantasy player due to his combination of speed, power, and the ability to hit for average. He did have a drop in power from 2007 to 2008 with 24 home runs down to just 15, but he made up for it with steals jumping up from 17 to 32.

March 3, 2009

Alex Rios was held hitless in four at-bats as the Puerto Rico team fell 3-2 to the Twins Tuesday.

Our View:

Rios was uncharacteristically ineffective at the plate Tuesday, stranding a game-high five runners.
