Newsbreakers

December 30, 2009

The Dodgers are "in the chase" for free agent starter Joel Pineiro, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.

Our View:

The Angels and the Mets are also in the mix for his services. Pineiro could remain unsigned for a while still, as teams are most likely waiting for his price to come down.

December 26, 2009

Joel Pineiro is most likely the Mets' number one pitching target this offseason, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.

Our View:

Coming off a career year at the age of 31, Pineiro is no doubt seeking a highly lucrative contract. Expect the Mets to be a very serious candidate to overpay for his services - services which will almost surely diminish away from the tutelage of Dave Duncan.

December 14, 2009

The Cubs are interested in free agent starter Joel Pineiro, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.

Our View:

Considering the big money the Cubs like to lavish on aging players, this could be great news for Pineiro and bad news for Cubs fans. While Pineiro had an obviously great year last season, it's always fool's errand to sign a player to a multi-year contract coming off a career year that occurred in their early thirties. While it's possible Pineiro has discovered the secret to pitching at a late age, it's more possible he will come nowhere close to replicating the 3.49 ERA and 1.14 WHIP he posted last season under Dave Duncan.

December 10, 2009

Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated tweeted that the Nationals, Dodgers, Mets and Cubs are interested in Joel Pineiro.

Our View:

Pineiro won 15 games with St. Louis in 2009, while maintaining a 3.49 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. He could be a nice alternative for teams that are unable to meet the price demands of ace John Lackey.

November 10, 2009

According to Jon Heyman on Twitter, the Mets are interested in free agent starter Joel Pineiro.

Our View:

Pineiro had a career year with the Cardinals in 2009, going 15-12 with a 3.49 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and the best groundball rate in the majors. He'll likely command Jeff Suppan/Brader Looper type dollars ($30 million for three or four years), but don't be surprised if his production replicates that of Soup and Looper as well when he's separated from Dave Duncan. It's an obvious and disappointing trend.

October 10, 2009

Joel Pineiro was tagged for four earned runs on seven hits over a mere four innings of work in Saturday's disappointing 5-1 loss to the Dodgers at Busch Stadium. He had three strikeouts and no walks.

Our View:

Pineiro struggled in front of the home crowd, and failed in his bid to extend the best-of-five series.

September 29, 2009

In his final regular season start, Joel Pineiro was blasted by the Reds for seven runs on eight hits and a walk over six innings. He fell to 15-12 on the year after the 7-2 loss.

Our View:

This was not the playoff tuneup that Pineiro was looking for. He allowed three homer runs in the game, after allowing just seven combined in every other start this season, and looked more like the Pineiro of 2008 that Cardinals fans lamented.

September 22, 2009

Joel Pineiro earned his 15th win of the season Tuesday by holding the Astros to one run on five hits and a pair of walks over seven innings. He fanned four in the 11-2 win.

Our View:

Pineiro is now one win shy of his career best mark that he set with the Mariners in 2003. His 3.24 ERA also ties a career low, matching his 2002 season.

September 16, 2009

Joel Pineiro allowed four runs and ten hits in 5.1 innings on Wednesday to the Marlins, taking his second straight loss as the Cardinals lost 5-2 at home.

Our View:

He is now 0-2 in his past three starts after winning five straight in late August and early September. His struggles could have something to do with the fact that he is just four innings away from pitching 200 in a season for the first time since 2003 in Seattle.

September 16, 2009

Joel Pineiro has informed his agent that he would like to work out a deal to remain with the St. Louis Cardinals after this season, according to MLB.com. Pineiro is having a career season for the Cardinals, posting a 14-10 record with a 3.21 ERA.

Our View:

Pineiro has looked like a different pitcher this season, so it makes sense that he would want to stay with the Cards for as long as possible. GM John Mozeliak has said the team won't be negotiating with free agents until the season is over, so don't expect anything to happen here until this winter.

September 11, 2009

Joel Pineiro only allowed one earned run on five hits over seven innings in Friday's 1-0 loss to the Braves at Busch Stadium. He had two walks and seven strikeouts.

Our View:

Pineiro pitched great tonight, but was forced to take a loss due to no run support. On the positive side, he trimmed his ERA to 3.28.

September 6, 2009

Joel Pineiro blew a three-run lead to the Pirates on Sunday, snapping his five game winning streak in the process. In six innings of the Cardinals' 6-5 loss, he struck out three while walking one.

Our View:

Pineiro has a 4.56 ERA since the beginning of August (seven starts), but has managed to go 5-0 in that span. He will continue to be a good, but not an elite, play down the stretch.

September 1, 2009

Joel Pineiro earned his 14th victory of the season with a 7-6 win over the Brewers Tuesday. He allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk over seven inning, but all the damage was done by rookie Casey McGehee. The rest of the lineup he held in check.

Our View:

Pineiro now has an eight-game winning streak and the Cardinals have won each of his last 11 starts. He has been a godsend for the Redbirds this season and is as good or better than any third starter in the game. He's deceptively waiting to strike behind co-aces Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright.

August 26, 2009

Joel Pineiro pitched eight stifling innings of two-run ball on Wednesday, improving to 13-9, as the Cardinals beat the Astros 3-2.

Our View:

Pineiro also has a sparkling 1.10 WHIP and 3.11 ERA to go with his 13 wins, and has shown no signs of slowing down as the season has progressed. Along with Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright, he is part of the best trio of starting pitchers on one team in the big leagues.

August 20, 2009

Joel Pineiro was his usual dominant self on Thursday night, limiting the Padres to just one run and four hits in 7.2 innings, as the Cardinals won 5-1 in San Diego.

Our View:

He also matched his season high in strikeouts, fanning seven. He has won six straight decisions since starting the year 6-9.

August 15, 2009

Joel Pineiro gave up three earned runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings in Saturday's 7-4 win over San Diego at Busch Stadium. He had one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View:

Pineiro did not have a strong outing, but the Cardinals provided enough run support for him to collect his 11th win. He is 5-0 over his last eight starts, and should remain active in fantasy leagues.

August 9, 2009

Joel Pineiro toughed out seven innings on Sunday, allowing three early runs to the Pirates, to earn his tenth win of the season. The Birds on Bat won 7-3 in Pittsburgh.

Our View:

Pineiro has looked more human in his recent starts than he did for much of June and July, but is still sinker-balling teams to death, and sporting a 1.12 WHIP and 3.22 ERA.

August 4, 2009

Joel Pineiro struggled mightily on Tuesday, but the Cardinals' offense bailed him out as they defeated the Mets 12-7 in ten innings. Pineiro went five innings and allowed seven runs on 11 hits while not walking or striking out a batter.

Our View:

Pineiro had been rolling as of late, but the sinker just wasn't working tonight. The Cards managed to bail him out, but fantasy owners can expect a much better performance next time out.

July 30, 2009

Joel Pineiro pitched eight sharp innings on Wednesday, but took a no-decision as the Dodgers and Cardinals needed six extra frames for St. Louis to squeeze out a 3-2 win.

Our View:

Pineiro's ERA is now a sparkling 2.84, while his WHIP is among the best in baseball at 1.07. His 9-9 record is not indicative of just how well he has pitched this season.

July 24, 2009

Joel Pineiro only issued four hits over six scoreless innings in Friday's 8-1 win at Philadelphia. He had one walk with three strikeouts.

Our View:

Pineiro enjoyed a strong performance, and evened his record to 9-9. He has earned a win in three straight starts.

July 19, 2009

Joel Pineiro was solid again on Sunday in the Cardinals' 2-1 win over the Diamondbacks. Pineiro went seven innings and allowed one run on five hits while not walking a batter and striking out three. He also managed to drive in both of the Cardinals' runs.

Our View:

Pineiro had the sinker working on Sunday, and when that pitch is on he is tough to beat. He is not a big strikeout guy, but his 3.09 ERA is more than respectable. Pineiro is not immune to the occasion bad start, but overall he has been very good this season.

July 9, 2009

Joel Pineiro was in control from the hill in Thursday's 5-1 win at Milwaukee, as he only issued one earned run on three hits over nine innings. He had no walks and fired five strikeouts.

Our View:

Pineiro collected his third complete game and shutout of the season, and trimmed his ERA to 3.20. Keep him active in fantasy leagues.

June 28, 2009

Joel Pineiro struggled a bit on Sunday as his Cardinals fell to the Twins 6-2. Pineiro went 6.2 innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out two. He is now 6-9 on the year.

Our View:

After a masterful start against the Mets earlier this week, Pineiro wasn't nearly as effective today. His sinker just didn't have its usual bite today, and he was hit around because of it. He didn't get much help, as his defense had three errors on the infield, but he still just didn't have it today. Although his record isn't great, he has shown the ability to dominate, and he should be utilized in nearly all leagues at this point.

June 23, 2009

Joel Pineiro was masterful on Tuesday, pitching a two-hit shutout as the Cardinals beat the Mets 3-0 in New York.

Our View:

Pineiro has now thrown two shutouts this season, and has been a real bright spot for the Cardinals in 2009. He is just 6-8, but has a 3.40 ERA in 92.2 innings pitched, and has walked only 12 batters all season. If you are in a smaller league and he isn't owned yet, you should gobble him up while you still can.

June 18, 2009

Joel Pineiro got hit hard early on Monday, surrendering four earned runs in the first inning, but settled down and pitched six scoreless frames afterwards. It wasn't enough, though, as the Cardinals fell 6-3 to the Tigers.

Our View:

Pineiro also had to be carried off the field after recording the final out in the seventh. He was seen clutching his left leg after suffering an apparent cramp. Trainers were also called onto the field one batter prior after his left arm cramped up. Details are unknown at this time, but conditions were very hot in St. Louis tonight, so cramping is the most likely culprit. He should likely be fine for his next start.

June 12, 2009

Joel Pineiro gave up three earned runs on seven hits over 6.1 innings in Friday's 7-3 loss at Cleveland. He had two walks and six strikeouts.

Our View:

Pineiro falls to 5-7 for the season after going 4-0 in April. He has lost in four straight starts.

June 5, 2009

After a successful bullpen session on Thursday, Cardinals' starter Joel Pineiro plans to make his next scheduled start on Sunday against the Rockies, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Pineiro reported no problems with his back after the bullpen session.

Our View:

This is great news for the Cards, especially with the news that Kyle Lohse is headed to the DL. The team can ill-afford another starter to go down, but it looks like Pineiro is just fine. Fantasy owners should get him in for his start on Sunday, especially since it is against the lowly Rockies.

June 4, 2009

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that Cardinals starter Joel Pineiro will throw a bullpen session on Thursday to determine whether or not he can make his next start.

Our View:

Pineiro has been a surprise for the Cardinals this season, and even a decent fantasy option, going 5-5 with a 3.86 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. However, even if he does take his next turn, he will likely be rusty and not a good candidate for your starting lineup.

June 3, 2009

MLB.com reports that Joel Pineiro is confident that he will make his next start on Sunday. He experienced back spasms in his last start and Brad Thompson was preciously expected to pitch in his place on Sunday.

Our View:

Pineiro had his shortest and worst outing of the season his last time out in San Francisco when he allowed four runs in four innings. On the season, he is 5-5 with a 3.86 ERA. However, he has just 25 strikeouts in 65.1 innings of work.

June 1, 2009

Joel Pineiro is expected to miss his next turn in the Cardinals' rotation due to back spasms, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The condition began Saturday and lasted into Sunday. He is not expected to end up on the DL.

Our View:

Pineiro is only expected to miss one start, but you never know when it comes to back spasms. Expect him to be fine, but he will not pitch this week. Pineiro is still a solid option in all leagues when healthy.

May 24, 2009

Joel Pineiro was pretty impressive on Sunday but he took the loss as the Cardinals fell to the Royals 3-2. Pineiro went seven innings and allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out three. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.

Our View:

Pineiro was pretty good today, but his ran into some tough luck. After starting the season on fire, he looked to have come back to Earth in early May. His last two starts, however, have been very good. He should be owned in all leagues at this point.

May 19, 2009

Joel Pineiro pitched out of his mind on Tuesday, tossing a three-hit shutout of the rival Chicago Cubs. The Cardinal hurler did not walk a man, struck out five and earned his fifth victory in a 3-0 Cardinal win.

Our View:

The Cardinals desperately needed a win and the fact that their fifth starter became the stopper is a huge boost. Pineiro struggled after a very impressive start, but looks back on track now. The shutout (his first since 2003) dropped his ERA to 3.48 and he is worth a look in NL-only leagues and possibly even mixed leagues.

May 13, 2009

Joel Pineiro struggled for the third straight time on Wednesday, as he and the Cardinals were defeated by the Pirates. Pineiro went six innings and allowed five runs on eleven hits.

Our View:

After coming out blazing, Pineiro has not been good in May. His fantasy value is rapidly decreasing, but if the Cardinals can turn things around he could still pick up some wins. He is a risky play in any league at this point, but it may be wise not to give up on him yet.

May 2, 2009

Joel Pineiro took his first loss of the season on Sunday. He allowed seven hits and four runs (one earned) over seven innings against the Nationals. Pineiro walked one and struck out four.

Our View:

We would have like a win, but since only one run was earned, fantasy owners will surely take it. Pineiro is off to a strong start through five outings. History suggests the league will catch up with him soon.

April 27, 2009

Joel Pineiro picked up his fourth win of the season as he used 76 pitches to get through 6.2 innings of work against the Braves on Monday. He allowed two runs on seven hits and had just one strikeout in the 3-2 win.

Our View:

Pineiro seems to have bought completely into the Dave Duncan style of pitching. He is no longer concerned with strikeouts and is relying almost entirely on his sinker and the defense behind him. So far it appears to be working but his fantasy value is limited because of his poor strikeout rate and mediocre WHIP.

April 22, 2009

Joel Pineiro threw a strong eight innings as the Cardinals beat the Mets 5-2 on Wednesday. He allowed six hits, two walks, and two runs, but did not record a single strike out.

Our View:

Pineiro relied on his defense tonight as he used just 91 pitches to get 24 outs. He also got two double play balls and he appears very focused in his contract year. He may be worth a look in NL-Only leagues, although he hasn't provided much fantasy value aside from wins to this point. As long as his sinker is going like it was tonight, he will be very tough to defeat.

April 15, 2009

Joel Pineiro was far from sharp on Wednesday, but hung on long enough to get the win in the Cardinals' 12-7 drubbing of Arizona. He allowed nine hits, three walks and five runs over just five innings.

Our View:

Thankfully for Pineiro the Cards' big bats showed up today. After a miserable performance, he still finds himself 2-0 on the season. This is the version of Pineiro we expected to see in 2009. The two-run, 6.2 inning performance in his first start may have been a fluke.

April 11, 2009

Joel Pineiro had a surprisingly strong start against the Astros on Friday. He tossed 6.2 innings, allowing just two runs on eight hits. He earned his first win of the season as the Cards prevailed 5-3.

Our View:

Pineiro was the low point of the Cards' rotation last season, but perhaps being snubbed by Puerto Rico in the WBC gave him a chip on his shoulder. Now he has a reason to prove people wrong. He's off to a good start.

April 4, 2009

Joel Pineiro had another strong start as the Cardinals defeated Triple-A Memphis 7-3 on Saturday. He allowed three hits, two walks, and two earned runs while striking out six over seven innings of work.

Our View:

Pineiro has been among the better pitchers for the Cards this spring, and he could make a fantasy impact this season as a deep sleeoper. At this point, it's probably better to take a wait and see approach.

March 30, 2009

Joel Pineiro threw six shutout innings as the Cardinals defeated the Marlins 2-1 on Monday. He allowed three hits and a walk, while striking out five.

Our View:

Pineiro is having a strong spring thus far. He has 20 strikeouts against just four walks in 24 innings and he currently boasts a 1.44 ERA. He's entering a contract year and pitching with a chip on his shoulder after being bypassed for Puerto Rico's team in the WBC. He's a deep sleeper that is worth a look in NL-only leagues.

March 25, 2009

Joel Pineiro allowed two earned runs on six hits over five innings in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Astros, with one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View:

Pineiro had a decent outing, and holds a 1.89 ERA in spring action. Pineiro, the Cardinals' No. 5 starter in the rotation, is worth a look in NL-only leagues.

March 7, 2009

Joel Pineiro allowed only one hit over four innings of work as the Cardinals beat the Astros 5-1 on Saturday. He struck out three hitters and walked none.

Our View:

This was an excellent outing for Pineiro who is pitching with a chip on his shoulder this spring. The fifth starter was upset when Cardinals third base coach Jose Oquendo did not select him to pitch for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. He did not perform well last season and he battled shoulder stiffness and a sore groin. However, the 30-year-old will be pitching for a contract this season and a bounceback is possible.

March 1, 2009

Joel Pineiro had a decent first outing on Sunday to begin his Grapefruit League season, going two innings while allowing one run on two hits and one walk. He also struck out two.

Our View:

Pineiro is projected to be the Cardinals' fifth starter going into the 2009 season. If Chris Carpenter or another pitcher were to go down, it would almost certainly solidify his spot in the rotation.

February 18, 2009

Joel Pineiro will not represent Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic as he was not asked to be part of their three-man rotation, according to MLB.com. He did not want to settle for a bullpen role and he stated, "Everybody knows that is not my role. I am very disappointed, very heartbroken. I felt disrespected."

Our View:

Now Pineiro can concentrate on building up as a starter with the Cardinals in spring training. He could improve this season while working at the back of the rotation, but still isn't expected to be solid source for strikeouts or wins.

February 14, 2009

Joel Pineiro wants to represent Puerto Rico in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Cardinals' skipper Tony LaRussa said, "I think the guy wants to pitch for his country, which I respect. He is going to have an important responsibility with our club so there is a decision. The first issue is if he is on the team or not."

Our View:

Pitching coach Dave Duncan expects to see improvement from Pineiro, but competing in the WBC will compromise his spring training. He is expected to hold a spot at the back of the Cardinals' rotation, but isn't going to be a solid source for strikeouts or likely wins.

February 4, 2009

Pitching coach Dave Duncan noted that the Cardinals are expecting more from Joel Pineiro this season after he struggled in 2008 with a 5.15 ERA and 1.45 WHIP, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

Pineiro feels bad about his performance last season and will be playing for a new contract in 2009. He is also in much better shape right now, and could be worth a look in deeper NL-only leagues.
