The Angels have agreed upon a two-year, $11 million deal with Fernando Rodney, according to ESPN.com.
Rodney is scheduled to undergo a physical for the Angels later today, after which the signing will be announced. Rodney was solid in save situations last year, collecting 37 saves with just one blown opportunity, though his 4.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP were far from ideal. He'll serve as Brian Fuentes' setup man in Los Angeles and will surely be the first in line to close should anything happen to Fuentes.
The Angels are in serious discussions with reliever Fernando Rodney, according to ESPN.com. He has been reportedly seeking a three-year, $30 million deal.
Rodney posted a 4.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP last season while closing 37 games. If he's not closing games, which is still Brian Fuentes' job, he's not of much value to fantasy teams.
Fernando Rodney is believed to be the Orioles' top target among closers, according to the Baltimore Sun.
The team is also looking at closers Matt Capps, Mike Gonzalez, Jose Valverde, and Kevin Gregg. The Mets are among the other teams interested in acquiring Rodney, who nailed down 37 saves for Detroit last season.
The Mets, Orioles and Phillies are all interested in acquiring Fernando Rodney, according to Jorge Arangure's (ESPN) twitter page.
No deal appears to be imminent though. The 32-year-old reliever covets a three-year contract worth $30MM after nailing down 37 saves in 2009.
Fernando Rodney, who rejected Detroit's arbitration offer, apparently is asking for three years and around $30 million, according to the Boston Globe.
Rodney showed the ability to close games last season by notching 37 saves, but his 4.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP were still far from ideal, and his ERA has been on the wrong side of 4.25 each of the past three seasons; basically, he's dreaming if he thinks he can get that type of money. We'll have to wait and see who eventually doles out the cash for him, but expect Rodney's asking price to come down.
Fernando Rodney has been offered salary arbitration from the Tigers, according to MLBblogs.com.
The reliever covets a multi-year deal, and team GM Dave Dombrowski admitted that he would be very surprised if Rodney accepts arbitration. He is a Type B free agent.
MLB.com is reporting that Tigers' manager Jim Leyland is hoping to give closer Fernando Rodney the night off on Monday. Rodney Rodney pitched the ninth inning on Sunday with his team up 7-2.
Rodney had already warmed up by the time the Tigers added three runs in the ninth, so Leyland went ahead and put him in the game. If the team has a save opportunity tonight, it will be interesting to see who Leyland uses, as he said he would like to give set-up man Brandon Lyon the night off as well.
According to the Twitter page of baseball writer Ed Price, Tigers' closer Fernando Rodney has been suspended three games for throwing a ball into the press box after the team's September 4 game against the Rays.
The suspension is supposed to start today unless Rodney appeals, but he would be wise to serve it now, as it doesn't look like he will be getting out of this one. He has 32 saves and a 3.41 ERA this season, and he has developed into a very reliable fantasy closer. We will update you if he decides to appeal.
Fernando Rodney picked up his 19th save of the season on Wednesday. He pitched a perfect ninth and struck out two in the Tigers' 3-1 win over the Royals.
Rodney is 0-2 this season with a 4.03 ERA, but is 19-for-19 in save opportunities. He's good with the game on the line, and even though his numbers aren't exactly what you want out of a reliever he's a great option for saves.
Fernando Rodney notched his 16th save of the season on Thursday in the Tigers' 6-5 win over the Cubs. Rodney struck out the side in his one inning, but he also surrendered two hits and a run.
Rodney doesn't have the best ERA or strikeout total as the Tigers' closer, but for the most part he is getting the job done. He is a solid play as a closer in all leagues, so if for any reason he is available you should grab him.
MLive.com reports that Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya will be unavailable for Wednesday night's contest against the White Sox after appearing in three consecutive games.
Rodney has been alright in the closer's role this season. He has just one loss against 11 saves, but he holds a 4.68 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. He also has just 19 strikeouts in 25 innings.
Fernando Rodney gave up three hits and two earned runs, but was able to get the final three outs in Detroit's 4-2 win over the Yankees on Monday.
After a hot start to the season, Rodney has given up five earned runs in his last three innings of work. He has given up eight hits but not walked any in that span. He has also failed to get a strikeout and it appears his honeymoon period of being a top fantasy closer has quickly passed.
Fernando Rodney earned his fourth save of the season on Sunday in the Tigers' 3-2 win over the Royals. He allowed a solo home run in the ninth, but eventually shut the door for a Tiger win.
Rodney hasn't been great this season, but is getting the job done. He'll need to step it up a bit though if he doesn't want to lose his job to Joel Zumaya who recently rejoined the team.
Fernando Rodney was spotless Saturday for the second time in two outings so far, this time striking out the side in the ninth, all on swinging third strikes.
In theory, Rodney has one of the shakiest holds on a closer job in the league, but he is doing his best to dispel that notion.
Fernando Rodney threw a perfect ninth inning as the Tigers beat the Blue Jays 5-1 on Wednesday. He needed just seven pitches, all strikes, to gather three outs.
Brandon Lyon blew the Tigers' first save opportunity on Tuesday, and given the volatile closer situation in Detroit, manager Jim Leyland figures to just go with the hot arm. Look for Rodney to get the next save opportunity as a result.
Fernando Rodney has been tabbed by Jim Leyland to be the Tigers' closer to start the season, according to the Detroit Free Press. "Does that mean he's going to come in every time? I don't know that," Leyland said. "I wouldn't make a big deal that I named Fernando Rodney the closer, because I really haven't. But he's going to close that first game, hopefully. I think Fernando Rodney is in the best shape he's been in since I've been here...I think he's throwing the ball extremely well. He's healthy. I think he'll have a good year. His control's better."
Rodney struggled in the role last season, and his 7.00 ERA through nine outings this spring don't give us much reason to suspect he'll thrive in it this season. Brandon Lyon will still likely be a factor in the ninth-inning, but neither pitcher comes with a very high recommendation. Of Rodney's numbers last season, the most alarming has to be his 6.69 BB/9 rate.
Fernando Rodney did not look good for his third-straight outing, giving up two hits and one earned run (two total) in the eighth inning against Atlanta on Friday.
Rodney had surrendered five hits, two walks and five runs in his previous two innings of work. Had he been more effective, he may have been in contention for Detroit's closer's role, as current closer Brandon Lyon hasn't looked good either, but as it stands, Lyon should enter the season as the Tigers' ninth-inning stopper.
Fernando Rodney threw a shutout fourth inning while allowing no hits or walks and striking out one as the Tigers beat Washington 3-0 on Sunday.
In five innings this spring, Rodney has allowed one run, but four hits and three walks. Thanks to his control problems, he has likely lost his chance to close, with Brandon Lyon taking over that role. He should still operate as the setup man, and provide plenty of strikeouts and free passes throughout the season.
While Brandon Lyon is the favorite to close this season for the Tigers, Fernando Rodney is expected to compete for the role in spring training, according to MLB.com.
Rodney picked up 13 saves in 19 chances last season, and finished with his highest ERA (4.91) since 2003. He will have to show that he has made major strides with his control and make-up before beating out Lyon for the position.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland says that changes to the bullpen are still on the way, according to the Detroit News.
After closer Todd Jones retired at the end of last season, it left the position vacant. We'll let you know what player is expected to rack up saves with the Tigers in 2009 as the situation develops this spring.
Fernando Rodney has avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year deal with the Tigers worth $2.7 million, according to the Denver Post. There is not believed to be any incentives in the contract.
The club is still considering their options at closer, but could potentially settle on employing Rodney in the role.
The Tigers are yet to find a closer and there is speculation that the club could turn to Fernando Rodney as their ninth-inning man in 2009, according to the Detroit News.
He did not fare well when given a chance to close last season, and it is questionable if the club or manager Jim Leyland would actually count on him to close in 2009. He is best-suited to work as a setup man.
