Newsbreakers

August 7, 2009

Scot Shields feels good while recovering from June surgery to repair the patella tendon in his left knee, according to MLB.com. Shields said, "I think everything is on schedule. I feel really good. There is no limp anymore. I think once baseball activity begins it will be a little sore."

Our View:

The 34-year-old vet is hopeful of being fully healthy for the start of training camp next year. He is the Angels' all-time leader among relievers with 42 wins, and has a 3.03 career ERA.

June 16, 2009

Updating an earlier report, Scot Shields underwent season-ending surgery on his left knee to repair the patella tendon Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

The Angels expect Shields to resume baseball activities in around six months. His 42 wins rank first in franchise history among relievers, and he will be missed in their bullpen.

June 16, 2009

Scot Shields has been transferred from the 15 to the 60-day DL by the Angels, according to TSN.

Our View:

Shields will have season-ending knee surgery, and the middle reliever should no longer be held on fantasy rosters.

June 14, 2009

The Orange County Register reports that Scot Shields will have knee surgery on Tuesday and he will not return for the Angels this season. He has been on the DL since May 27 with patellar tendinitis in his left knee.

Our View:

Shields has been an excellent middle reliever throughout his career, but he was having his worst season of his career in 2009 thorugh 20 appearances. There's a chance he could return in September or in the playoffs, but don't count on it.

June 6, 2009

According to the LA Times, injured setup man Scot Shields has yet to throw a pitch since he landed on the disabled list.

Our View:

The inflammation in Shields' knee is not subsiding and he will most likely not return on Wednesday, when he is eligible to come off the DL. The earliest the team can see him returning is the end of the month.
