Newsbreakers

February 25, 2010

Carl Crawford and the Rays have tabled contract extension negotiations, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:

For the entire season, that is. Not very good news for those hoping the star outfielder will be in Tampa Bay beyond 2010.

February 22, 2010

Carl Crawford's future with the Rays is uncertain, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

Crawford can become a free agent after the 2010 campaign, and wants to win and be paid higher than the $10MM he is slated to earn this season. Crawford would likely have no problem getting his wish, as he an elite five-tool outfielder.

January 24, 2010

There's a strong probability that Carl Crawford could be traded sometime before next summer's trade deadline, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:

The Rays are in apparent financial dire straights, and seeing that Crawford will be a free agent after this season, they would likely have little chance of re-signing him. Quite a shame since Crawford is likely the best player in franchise history. Hopefully things change for the better sometime soon in Tampa, but it is looking bleak.

December 6, 2009

The Rays will "at least listen" if teams inquire about star outfielder Carl Crawford, or first baseman Carlos Pena, at this week's winter meetings in Indianapolis, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:

Although both players are smack dab in the middle of their primes, the Rays are always under payroll restrictions, and if the right package of prospects comes up this week, one may very well be dealt.

December 1, 2009

The Rays are not currently thinking about trading star outfielder Carl Crawford, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:

Crawford will earn $10MM in 2010, in the last year of his contract with the Rays. Both sides would like to see him stay in Tampa Bay for the long term, but executive VP Andrew Friedman admitted that it will be difficult to figure out how much money the club can allocate to one player.
