Scott Downs (hamstring) has likely thrown his last pitch of 2009, according to the Toronto Sun.
Downs will finish the season with a 3.09 ERA and nine saves in 49.2 innings pitched.
Scott Downs may be done for the remainder of the season after suffering a hamstring injury during battle with the Yankees on September 16, according to the Associated Press.
Downs is day-to-day, but skipper Cito Gaston stated there may not be enough time for him to recover before the end of the season.
Scott Downs has been activated off the DL by the Blue Jays, according to the Twitter page of beat writer Jordan Bastian. To make room on the roster, the team placed third baseman Edwin Encarnacion on the 15-day DL.
Downs isn't expected to take back the closer's role right away, but he should eventually regain ninth inning duties. Fantasy owners should activate him as well, but don't be shocked if he doesn't get save opportunities for another week or so.
Scott Downs (bruised toe) appears poised to be activated off of the disabled list on Monday, according to MLB.com.
The lefty has made three rehab appearances since being shut down on August 2, allowing one earned run, three hits and a walk, while striking out two, in 2.1 innings in the Florida State League.
Scott Downs participated in felding drills and threw a bullpen session on Sunday, according to the Twitter page of beat writer Jordan Bastian. Downs is expected to stay in Florida to begin a rehab assignment this week.
It sounds like Downs is doing much better, and if the rehab stint goes smoothly he could be back soon. He will begin this week, and we will keep you updated on his status going forward.
Scott Downs has landed back on the DL after aggravating his left big toe, the same one that caused him to be placed on the DL earlier in the year, according to CBS Sports. "Instead of day to day, we'll go week to week," manager Cito Gaston said. "We want to make sure he's healthy when he comes back."
Downs had clearly been affected by the toe, having given up seven runs in his last five innings, and it seems like he'll likely need more than 15 days to return to full health. Jeremy Accardo was called up to fill his roster spot, but it will be Jason Frasor that gets most, if not all, of the save opportunities in Toronto.
The Toronto Blue Jays have activated closer Scott Downs off the DL, according to the Twitter page of Jays' beat writer Jordan Bastian. Downs has been out with a strained left big toe.
Downs threw a successful session yesterday, and apparently the team feels comfortable activating him today. He may not get all of the save opportunities right away, but after the All-Star break he should be the full-time closer again.
MLB.com is reporting that Blue Jays' closer Scott Downs could be activated this weekend after throwing a successful bullpen session on Friday. Downs has been out with a strained big toe in his left foot.
Manager Cito Gaston told the media that the team would evaluate Downs again today, but it looks like he is very close to being ready. We will keep you update on his status for the rest of the weekend, but for now get ready to activate him soon.
MLB.com is reporting that Blue Jays' closer Scott Downs is scheduled to throw off a mound on Tuesday and participate in fielding drills. Downs is still trying to come back from a sprained left big toe.
Downs is eligible to come off the DL on July 3, and barring a setback it looks like he will be ready to go on that day. He is expected to resume his role as the closer, so if he is a free agent in your league you may want to give him a look.
According to Blue Jays' writer Jordan Bastian's twitter account, Manager Cito Gaston says that closer Scott Downs will come off the DL on July 3rd when first eligible.
Downs injured himself batting in inter-league play, but fantasy owners can breath a sigh of relief as he appears to be very close to returning. Downs has been very impressive in the closer's role this season and should be inserted back into lineups as soon as he returns.
As expected, Scott Downs has been placed on the 15-day DL due to a sprained left big toe, according to TSN. Pitcher Jeremy Accardo was recalled from Triple-A as the adjoining move.
Downs will be missed by the Jays while on the shelf, as he holds a 1.98 ERA over 27.1 innings, with 28 strikeouts. Jason Frasor will handle the closer's role while Downs is out, and is worth targeting in AL-only leagues if you need help in the saves department.
According to MLB.com, Blue Jays' closer Scott Downs will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained big left toe.
Downs stumbled out of the batters box in the tenth inning of Tuesday night's game and limped down the line to first. Another casualty of inner-league player. No replacement has been named yet to fill in and close for the Jays.
Scott Downs limped off the diamond in the 10th inning of Tuesday's battle at Philadelphia, according to Jordan Bastian's twitter page.
His X-rays came back negative, but he sustained a lower-leg injury. Bastian believes Downs could land on the DL, but the Jays are yet to update his status.
Scott Downs nailed down a save in Monday's 6-3 win at Texas, as he allowed one hit over 1.1 innings, with one walk and no strikeouts.
Downs collected his eighth save of the season. Downs is performing well as the Jays' closer, and he remains a viable No. 2 option in fantasy leagues.
Scott Downs picked up his second save in as many nights as Toronto beat Boston 5-3 on Saturday. He needed nine pitches to get three ninth inning outs, although he did allow a hit.
It doesn't look as if the Jays are contemplating taking the closer's job away from Downs any time soon. Prior to his two saves against the Red Sox he had blown a save after giving up two runs in the previous start.
Scott Downs earned his fourth save of the season on Saturday in a 2-1 win over the White Sox. Downs tossed a perfect ninth inning to shut the door on Chicago.
Downs has been extremely effective this season, which is why he is still the one on the hill with the game on the line despite B.J. Ryan's return to the lineup. Unless something changes in the Blue Jays' clubhouse, Downs is a solid fantasy option at stopper this season.
Scott Downs didn't get a save Tuesday, but he was dominant in a non-save situation, striking out three while allowing just one hit and no walks in 1.2 innings.
At what point did Downs become the best reliever in the game? We're kidding... sort of. His ERA sits at 0.59, WHIP at 0.52 and he has a 20/0 K/BB rate in 15.1 innings. Simply dominant. Cito Gaston should have his head examined if he gives the closer job back to B.J. Ryan this year.
Scott Downs earned his second save of the season Sunday as the Blue Jays topped the White Sox 4-3. Downs allowed a lone single in his scoreless ninth inning.
B.J. Ryan's replacement has been brilliant this season. He has allowed just one earned run in 10.2 innings and has struck out 14 batters over that span.
The same day he was named the closer, Scott Downs picked up his first save of the season. He pitched a scoreless ninth as the Blue Jays held on the beat the Rangers 5-2.
Downs has been electric this season and probably should have been the closer all year long. If there weren't all those millions attached to B.J. Ryan's name he most likely would have been. Downs now has a 0.93 ERA and has fanned 14 batters in just 9.2 innings.
With B.J. Ryan landing on the DL, Scott Downs is expected to take over as the Jays' closer. Downs boasts a 1.04 ERA, 0.46 WHIP and 13/0 K/BB rate in 8.2 innings this year.
Sprint to pick Downs up if he's still available, as there is a chance he could be the team's closer for the remainder of the year.
Scott Downs got one out on one pitch and that was all he was needed for as the Blue Jays crushed the Tigers 12-5 on Monday.
Downs was being considered for the closer's role, but his appearance in this game seems to indicate that the closing job is still B.J. Ryan's to lose. Don't count on Downs to see save opportunities until Ryan blows a save or three.
Scott Downs threw a single shutout inning for the Blue Jays in their 7-6 win over the Nationals on Wednesday. He allowed one walk to go with no strikeouts and no hits.
Downs has been mentioned as a possible closer candidate in case B.J. Ryan is not ready to handle his typical duties this season. Over the past few years, Downs has been an excellent middle relief option, and he will likely handle some ninth-inning duties in 2009.
Scott Downs may be given a shot to pick up some saves this season, even if B.J. Ryan remains healthy. MLB.com reports that the Blue Jays are concerned about Ryan's overall ineffectiveness this spring and manager Cito Gaston has reportedly been open to the possibility of using Downs in the ninth-inning role
In three innings of work this spring, Downs has allowed two hits and two walks to go with three runs. He was exceptional in 70.2 innings of work last season when he posted a 1.78 ERA. He also collected five saves but his 7.26 K/9 rate is not ideal for a closer. The 33-year-old is exceptional at shutting down left-handed hitters, and he could be a nice sleeper for fantasy purposes.
Scott Downs has been sent for an MRI after experiencing a twinge in his left elbow, according to MLB.com. GM J.P. Ricciardi said, "Everything was good. It was a good MRI, but when they inject you with the dye, it takes five to six days -- some people a little longer -- to get the dye out. He is getting closer to getting it out, but I would say in the next four or five days, he will be throwing."
His test came back clean and he will need to rest for a few days before resuming his throwing program. He is expected to serve as the Jays' setup man this season.
