Newsbreakers

November 24, 2009

Miguel Cabrera is rumored to be available via trade this offsesaon, according to the Detroit News.

Our View:

The Tigers appear to be flirting with a firesale, and Cabrera has six very expensive years left on the mega-deal he signed before the 2008 season. No possible suitors have been mentioned, though the Red Sox have been interested in Miggy in the past.

November 23, 2009

With Joe Mauer taking 27-of-28 first place votes in the American League MVP award voting on Wednesday, Miguel Cabrera took the lone other first place vote, according to Ken Davidoff of Newsday. As a result, he has earned a $200,000 bonus from the Tigers.

Our View:

Whom does he have to thank? An obscure Japanese writer by the name of Keizo Konishi, a Kyodo News writer based in Seattle. We'll see if he gets raked over the coals the way ESPN's Keith Law did last week for excluding Chris Carpenter from his National League Cy Young award ballot.

October 8, 2009

ESPN.com is reporting that Tigers' slugger Miguel Cabrera plans to address his family and alcohol issues during this offseason. Tigers' Gm Dave Dombrowski met with Cabrera to address Cabrera's decision to get drunk in between games last week.

Our View:

Another interesting piece of this story is that Dombrowski was the one who went and picked Cabrera up from the police station, which couldn't have been comfortable for either man. For anyone who has ever had to call a parent or guardian to pick you up at the police station, you know how Cabrera must have felt making that call. Surprisingly, Dombrowski said it wasn't the first time in his 20 years as GM that he has had to pick up a player from the cops.

October 6, 2009

Miguel Cabrera fought hard in tonight's 6-5 loss at Minnesota, as he went 2-for-5 with a double and a two-run homer off Scott Baker. The battle went 12 innings.

Our View:

Cabrera was unable to lead the Tigers into the playoffs, but should still be satisfied with his effort tonight. He ends the year with a .324 batting average, 34 homers and 103 RBI.

October 6, 2009

Despite a batch of recent negative revelations, Miguel Cabrera is starting at first base and batting cleanup in the Tigers' one game playoff with the Twins on Tuesday, according to Jason Beck of MLB.com.

Our View:

Of course he is. If he were a reserve, say Ramon Santiago, there is no way he would be playing today. But obviously, talent almost always trumps character, and intelligence, when it comes to sports. Seeing as this game starts early at 4 p.m. central time, hopefully he kept the drinking (with Twins players) to a minimum last night.
