Newsbreakers

September 29, 2009

MLB.com reports that with a double off of Rays starter Wade Davis on Tuesday, Brian Roberts broke the record for most doubles in a season by a switch hitter with 56.

Our View:

Roberts bested Lance Berkman's mark of 55 set in 2001 and now has another gaudy doubles-related statistic to attach to him name. He's also the franchise leader for the Orioles and is just the fourth player in history to have three 50-double seasons. The others are Stan Musial, Tris Speaker and Paul Waner. Pretty elite company for the diminutive Roberts. Kudos.

September 28, 2009

Brian Roberts was productive in tonight's 7-6 loss at Tampa Bay, as he went 2-for-6 with two RBI and a run scored. He hit a single and a two-run homer off Jeff Niemann.

Our View:

Roberts hit his second homer of September, and his 16th of 2009. He continues to rank among the AL leaders with 106 runs scored.

September 22, 2009

Brian Roberts went 3-for-5 with two RBI in tonight's 6-5 loss at Toronto. He hit a double and two singles.

Our View:

Roberts hit a double in three of his last four games, and continues to lead the majors with 55. He is hitting .296 in September.

September 22, 2009

MLBlogs.com reports that Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts has tied the major league single season record for doubles by a switch-hitter with 55 on Tuesday.

Our View:

Roberts' double in Tuesday's game tied the mark set by Houston's Lance Berkman in 2001. He already owns the franchise record, and if he gets five more this season he will tie the all-time mark for second basemen.

September 17, 2009

Brian Roberts went 0-for-3 with a walk on Thursday night, making him one of just six Oriole baserunners, as Baltimore got shutout 3-0 at home by Wade Davis and Tampa Bay.

Our View:

Roberts remains eight doubles away from posting just the seventh 60-double season in major league history. He has 16 games left to accomplish the feat.
