Newsbreakers

October 28, 2009

The Arizona Republic is reporting that outfielder Eric Byrnes and the Diamonbacks may be close to cutting ties. Byrnes doesn't figure to have a spot the the D-Back outfield next season, so it looks like the team may try to trade him this winter.

Our View:

Byrnes was a fan-favorite in Arizona just a few years ago, but injuries and poor play have hurt him recently. If the D-Backs want to trade him, they will likely have to eat much of the $11 million he is still owed, or they could trade him for another bad contract. Either way, it looks like Byrnes is on his way out of the desert.

October 2, 2009

Eric Byrnes had a big day at the plate in a 12-3 win at Chicago, as he went 4-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored. He notched two singles and swatted two homers, one coming off Jeff Stevens and the other Aaron Heilman.

Our View:

That's why they call it the friendly confines of Wrigley Field. Byrnes hit two homers in a game for the first time in 2009, and only racked up three total hits over his previous eight games (17 at-bats).

September 23, 2009

The East Valley Tribune is reporting that the D-Backs may consider releasing outfielder Eric Byrnes is the offseason. Byrnes is not in the team's plans for the future, so they might be willing to eat the remaining money on his contract to give the roster more flexibility.

Our View:

Byrnes is a fan favorite in the desert, but this would be the best move for the team. The 2010 outfield is set with Justin Upton, Connor Jackson, and Chris Young, and the team has Gerardo Parra as the team's fourth outfielder. Byrnes hasn't been able to get healthy over the last two seasons, but he should be able to find work next season if he is released.

September 16, 2009

MLB.com is reporting that D-Backs' outfielder Eric Byrnes will participate with the Licey Tigers of the Dominican league this winter. Byrnes has struggled with injury over the last two seasons, and he wants to get some at-bats and get prepared for next season.

Our View:

Byrnes is a veteran of winter ball in the Dominican, as this will be his fifth season. He is a fan-favorite, as the people have given him the nickname "Capitan America" because of his aggressive style of play. Byrnes needs to get completely healthy if he is every going to come close to replicating his 2007 season.

September 15, 2009

Eric Byrnes went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI in Arizona's 4-2 win over the Padres Tuesday night.

Our View:

The homer was Byrnes' first since June 18th. He has just four hits since coming off the DL on September 5th.
