According to the team's Twitter page, the Atlanta Braves have signed manager Bobby Cox to a one-year contract extension to coach in 2010. Cox plans to retire after the 2010 season.

Our View:

Cox has been a staple of the Braves organization for many years, and he will go down in history as one of the greatest managers of all time. He will have one more season to pad his record for ejections, so Braves' fans and baseball fans alike should take the time to watch the Braves before Cox is gone.

September 11, 2009

Chipper Jones has said he might retire after the 2010 season, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Our View:

He has a $42 million deal that runs through the end of 2012, but the likely future Hall-of-Famer is frustrated with his play this season. He is batting just .268, while hitting 16 home runs and driving in 64. The .268 average comes just one season after he won the National League batting title batting .364.

September 6, 2009

Chipper Jones is out of the lineup again on Sunday to rest his sore back. He will be replaced at third base by Martin Prado.

September 2, 2009

Chipper Jones is not in the starting lineup for the Braves division battle with the Marlins on Wednesday.

August 14, 2009

Chipper Jones went 2-for-4 and picked up his 54th RBI on Friday, but the Braves still lost 3-2 to the Phillies in Atlanta.

August 11, 2009

After talking his way into the lineup on Tuesday, Chipper Jones (oblique) went 2-for-4 and hit his 15th home run as the Braves stopped the Nats eight-game winning streak 8-1 in Atlanta.

August 10, 2009

MLB.com is reporting that Braves' third baseman Chipper Jones is questionable for this week's series against the Nationals with a strained left oblique. Jones has already missed three games due to the injury.

Our View:

It doesn't look like Chipper is going to be available against the Nats this week, and considering they are one of the hottest teams in baseball, that's not good. Who would have thought a few months ago that the Braves would need Chipper to beat the Nats? We will keep you updated on Chipper's status when we hear more.

Chipper Jones sat out the team's game against the Dodgers on Friday after straining his left oblique during batting practice, according to Mark Bowman.

August 7, 2009

Chipper Jones' seventh inning home run made it a 4-2 game on Thursday, but the Braves couldn't hold on and lost 5-4 in Los Angeles.

Chipper Jones led the Braves in Saturday's 4-3 win over Los Angeles at Atlanta, as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI. He hit a single and a double.

July 10, 2009

Chipper Jones is likely to miss most of the Braves games against the Rockies this weekend as he nurses a strained right groin, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:

Chipper has now missed three straight games with the ailment, but said he is not concerned about it lingering on past the All-Star break. A DL trip does not appear likely, and he should be safe to start once the Braves resume play next week.

July 9, 2009

Chipper Jones is out of the Braves' lineup for tonight's game at Colorado while nursing his strained right groin, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Jones was hopeful of returning to action tonight, but his groin is still bothering him while trying to swing for power. He is not concerned with the ailment, and believes he can return within the next day or two.

July 8, 2009

Chipper Jones is not in the Braves' lineup again om Wednesday after straining his right groin on Monday. He will be replaced by Martin Prado at third base against the Cubs.

July 1, 2009

Chipper Jones drove in three runs on Wednesday night, pacing the Braves to an 11-1 rout over the Phillies.

Our View:

Chipper hasn't approached the batting title form he displayed last season, but is still having a solid 2009 season, driving in 36 runs while batting .292. He is a good option at third base in every format.

June 28, 2009

Chipper Jones hit his ninth home run of the season in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Red Sox. It was his only hit in four trips.

Our View:

Chipper is constantly banged up and requires a hefty amount of off days. That was ok last season when he was hitting over .360 with a decent amount of pop. This year his nine homers and .289 average don't really cut it.

June 24, 2009

Chipper Jones went 2-for-3 with a run scored in Wednesday's 8-4 loss to the Yankees at Turner Field. Both of his knocks were singles.

Our View:

Jones raised his season average to .300, and recorded multiple hits in a game for the first time since June 16.

June 16, 2009

Chipper Jones collected three of the Braves ten hits in their 7-2 loss to the Reds on Tuesday, and is now batting .308 on the season.

Our View:

Chipper's not playing nearly as well as he was a year ago, when he was batting .403 on June 16, but is still a force in the middle of the Braves lineup and one of the better fantasy third baseman out there, even at age 37.

June 8, 2009

Chipper Jones went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer in Monday's 7-6 win over the Pirates at Turner Field. His other hit was a single. The game went 15 innings.

June 7, 2009

Our View:

Chipper only had three hits in June until Sunday's offensive explosion. He raised his average to .329 and now has seven bombs and 28 RBI on the season. If Jones can stay healthy he's a fantastic fantasy option, even at his age.

June 4, 2009

Tonight's game between the Cubs and Braves at Turner Field has been postponed due to rain, according to the Sports Network.

A makeup date is yet to be set. Carlos Zambrano was going to make his return from a six-game suspension for Chicago. Jair Jurrjens was slated to start for Atlanta, and will now take the hill Friday against the Brewers.

June 3, 2009

According to MLBlogs.com, Chipper Jones is a game-time decision for tonight's contest.

Our View:

Chipper's big toe is flaring up again, so he may have to sit this one out. It apparently bothers him more against lefties, and with Ted Lilly on the mound he may have to sit this one out. Stay tuned as we'll update his status when the Braves make a decision on him.

June 2, 2009

Chipper Jones went 2-for-5 with an RBI in Tuesday's 6-5 win over the Cubs at Turner Field. Both of his hits were singles.

Our View:

Jones has five hits and five RBI over his last two games. He continues to lead the Braves with a .319 batting average.

June 1, 2009

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that Chipper Jones could start to miss some time if his injured right toe doesn't begin to improve. Jones has been dealing with the toe injury for several weeks.

Our View:

Chipper looked fine on Sunday during his three-hit performance, but apparently the toe is really bothering him. Expect him to miss some time going forward, but it remains to be seen how much time it will be. When is he is the lineup, you should still play him, but monitor this situation until it is resolved.

May 31, 2009

Chipper Jones went 3-for-4 with two runs, four RBI and his fifth home run of the season on Sunday against Arizona.

Our View:

At 37 years of age, Jones is still one of the most skilled hitters in the league and is a must-start whenever you know he'll be on the field.

May 26, 2009

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Chipper Jones (toe) returned to the Braves' lineup on Tuesday night.

Our View:

The Braves' third baseman tested his sore toe with some running and Bobby Cox felt he was good enough to start. Keep an eye on his status though, as he'll likely be a game time decision for the next few days.

May 26, 2009

Chipper Jones is still being hindered by his sprained big toe, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:

He can hit but cannot play defense or run the bases yet. It is uncertain when he will return to his post at third base, but skipper Bobby Cox does not believe Jones will need to go on the DL as of now.

May 24, 2009

Chipper Jones is not in the Braves' lineup on Sunday. He is being replaced by Martin Prado at third base today.

Our View:

Chipper's toe is still bothering him, but he may be available to pinch hit if necessary today. He is expected to be back this week, but there is still an outside chance he could end up on the DL.

May 22, 2009

The AP reports that Chipper Jones is not in the starting lineup for Friday night's game with the Blue Jays. He is not sure if he will be able to pinch hit. He injured his toe while running to first base on Thursday's game.

Our View:

We won't be the least bit surprised if Jones sits out this whole series. He should avoid the DL, but as we have learned with Chipper, his minor injuries tend to linger.

May 22, 2009

MLB.com is reporting that Chipper Jones injured his foot in the sixth inning on Thursday while trying to beat out a grounder. Jones is listed as day-to-day for the Braves, but he is not expected to play Friday.

Our View:

Chipper said he aggravated a bunion that gave him problems for much of the 2004 and 2005 seasons. We will keep you updated on his condition for tonight's game, but it is likely he will be out.

May 15, 2009

Chipper Jones was 1-for-3 with a home run, a run scored, and an RBI in the Braves' 4-3 win over the Diamondbacks.

Our View:

Jones has been hot since coming back from his sore elbow, and he is starting to look like the Chipper we are used to. Continue to play him in all leagues unless his elbow starts flaring up again.

May 13, 2009

Chipper Jones was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored, two walks and two RBI on Wednesday as the Braves topped the Mets 8-7 in 12 innings.

Our View:

Deuces were wild for Chipper on Wednesday and he seems to be feeling no ill effects from the sore elbow that kept him out of the lineup sporadically this month. He's had two hits in both games since returning to action.

May 12, 2009

Updating a previous report, Chipper Jones is in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mets, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Chipper has been dealing with a sore elbow, but took batting practice today and said everything felt fine. Looks like he won't need that cortisone shot after all.

May 12, 2009

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that Chipper Jones is hopeful that he will be able to return to the Braves' lineup on Tuesday. He missed Monday's game with a sore right elbow.

Our View:

Hopefully Chipper is doing better today, but he indicated that if his elbow doesn't improve he will get a cortisone shot. If he has to get the shot, he will miss two or three more game. We will keep you updated on his condition.

May 11, 2009

May 11, 2009

Chipper Jones may miss Monday's game against the Mets due to a hyper-extended elbow, according to MLB.com.

The 37-year-old vet believes there is only a 50 percent chance he will be able to go. He noted that he will play if he can throw.

May 10, 2009

Chipper Jones was taken out of Sunday's game against the Phillies after hyper-extending his right elbow. He is listed as day-to-day.

Our View:

This injury isn't expected to be serious, but Chipper may miss at least one game. We will keep you updated on his status, but he will probably sit tomorrow night.

May 7, 2009

Chipper Jones was held out of today's lineup at Florida to rest, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:

The 37-year-old vet is not injured, and skipper Bobby Cox merely gave him the day off as the Braves are playing a day game following a night game.

May 6, 2009

Chipper Jones was 2-for-3 with two RBI, two walks, and a double as the Braves beat the Marlins 8-6 on Wednesday.

Our View:

Jones has only four hits in his last six games, but we expect that he will get it going again very soon. He is currently hitting .295 and we like his odds of getting the average up to over .300 soon. Once it does get there, there's a good chance he keeps it there.

May 4, 2009

Chipper Jones notched his third home run of the year in the Braves' 6-4 loss on Monday. Chipper is hitting .296 on the season with nine RBI.

Our View:

Chipper is hitting almost .300, but his home run and RBI totals are pretty low. He is still a good fantasy player, but he needs to improve the RBI total if he is going to stay a top option.

April 25, 2009

Chipper Jones went 2-for-4 including his second home run of the season for the Braves. Chipper also knocked in four runs in the outing, matching his total from the first 11 games.

Our View:

This outing pushed Chipper's batting average to .298, and it was nice to see him finally drive the ball. Chipper's production will be there when he plays, that much is certain, but as always, injuries will continue to be a concern.

April 19, 2009

Chipper Jones was back in action on Sunday as the Braves beat Pittsburgh 11-1. The third baseman was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. He had not played in five days due to a bruised thumb.

Our View:

Jones should be fine moving forward as the injury never figured to even be this serious. However, his on-going fragility should be a concern for his fantasy owners.

April 17, 2009

Chipper Jones is expected to miss the entire three-game series against the Pirates while nursing a jammed left thumb, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View:

The series starts Friday at PNC Park and ends on Sunday. Omar Infante will be the top candidate to replace Jones at third.

April 16, 2009

Chipper Jones missed Thursday's game with a bruised thumb. It marks the second straight day he has missed with the injury.

Our View:

Omar Infante has filled in admirably for the third baseman. The bruised thumb should not keep Chipper out much longer. However, it further illustrates the switch-hitters fragility.

April 15, 2009

The Miami Herald is reporting that Chipper Jones is not in the lineup for Wednesday night's game against the Marlins. His bruised thumb has been bothering him a little, so he will rest it tonight.

Our View:

This injury in not believed to be serious, but no point in risking it this early in the season. Chipper may be out Thursday as well, so check back to see whether or not he is in the lineup.

April 8, 2009

Chipper Jones was scratched from Wednesday's lineup with a bruised left thumb, according to MLB.com. He said, "I have been dealing with it for a week or 10 days, and I would like to have it behind me by Friday."

Our View:

The injury is not believed to be serious and Jones expects to be fine. He could return to the diamond Friday against the Nationals.

April 5, 2009

Chipper Jones was 2-for-4 in the season opener on Sunday, as his Braves stomped the rival Phillies 4-1. He also struck out twice and scored a run.

Our View:

Looks like Chipper picked up right where he left off last year. The 2008 batting champion is a solid pick at third base overall, and an elite pick when he's healthy. Beware of the injury monkey though. It's been living with Chipper for years now.

April 5, 2009

Chipper Jones sat out Atlanta's final two spring games due to flu-like symptoms but will be fine to start in the team's season opener against Philadelphia on Sunday night, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Our View:

There had been a bit of concern that the 36-year-old veteran might be forced to sit out a game or two, but that doesn't appear to be a risk anymore. Start Jones with confidence, as he remains one of the top hitters in the game when active.

April 2, 2009

Chipper Jones went 2-for-2 in Thursday's 2-1 win over the Astros. Both of his knocks were singles.

Our View:

The 36-year-old vet is a top-5 fantasy third baseman, but is an injury risk, so it is recommended to add solid depth at the hot corner if you draft Jones.

March 31, 2009

Chipper Jones has agreed to a three-year extension with the Braves worth over $40MM, according to MLB.com. The deal includes an option for 2013.

Our View:

It looks like the 36-year-old will play his entire career with Atlanta. He was a rookie with the club back in 1993, and has piled up 2,277 hits and 408 homers so far.

March 30, 2009

Chipper Jones and the Braves are close to a three-year contract extension that would keep him in Atlanta through the 2013 season. Jones turns 37 in April.

Our View:

Jones was selected by the Braves with the first overall pick way back in 1990. The extension would employ him past his 41st birthday. We certainly love to see a Hall-of-Famer stick with one team throughout the length of his career, but the Braves have to be more than aware of Jones' on-going fragility. He has not played more than 137 games since the 2003 season. Regardless, with 408 home runs and a career-average of .310, he is the only switch-hitter in history with at least 300 home runs and a .300 average.

March 25, 2009

Chipper Jones went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI on Wednesday in the Braves' 6-3 loss to the Nationals.

Our View:

The record continues to spin around and around for Jones who puts up solid numbers but is always hurt. He puts up solid home run, RBI, and hit totals but usually misses around 40 games per year. If you draft Jones pick up a really good backup.

March 24, 2009

Third baseman Chipper Jones returned to the Braves lineup on Tuesday, and he plans to play again on Wednesday. "I'm fine," he informs MLB.com. Jones strained his oblique on March 8 and has been resting the injury.

Our View:

Chipper boldly assumes that he won't sprain an ankle, strain a calf, tweak his back, stub his toe, injure his ear, or otherwise get hurt on Tuesday. Let's just take it day-to-day here, buddy.

March 24, 2009

Chipper Jones may return to the Braves' lineup Tuesday against the Pirates following his bout from a strained oblique, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:

Jones will remain a risky fantasy pick, and it is required to add solid insurance behind him if you decide to draft the 36-year-old vet.

March 20, 2009

Chipper Jones was hoping to return to the diamond by the end of the week, but he will need to wait a few more days after his strained side muscle bothered him while taking batting practice Thursday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Jones said, "It still is not right. When I get past 70 or 80 percent [effort on his swing], it still bothers me."

Our View:

The 36-year-old vet should be drafted with caution, and be sure to invest in solid insurance for him in case he fails to stay healthy.

March 15, 2009

CBSSports.com reports that Chipper Jones will leave Team USA and head back to Braves camp soon. He was scratched from Sunday's game after re-aggravating his strained oblique. The third baseman says the injury is "progressively getting worse." However, he also does not see it being a lingering issue once treated.

Our View:

Jones wants to get back to the team doctors that he is familiar with. He could be held out of game action over the coming weeks. However, regardless of how much work he does or does not see this spring, if he is healthy on opening day, he will be in the lineup.

March 11, 2009

Chipper Jones took batting practice from both sides and also fielded grounders on Wednesday, according to the AP. He injured his oblique in win over Venezuela, but he will be available to play on Saturday when the second round begins.

Our View:

As expected, the injury was not overly serious. However, it's disheartening to see Chipper's numbers in the WBC (0-for-7) with five strikeouts. The fear of Jones suddenly turning into Mark Reynolds does not exist, but his odds of winning another batting title seem slim.

March 9, 2009

Chipper Jones will miss at least the next couple days due to his mild, right oblique strain. "We've got information trainers sent us and all that," manager Bobby Cox tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "May be two or three days, might be a week. We'll see." Jones suffered the injury on Sunday. The Braves did not pull him out of the World Baseball Classic.

Our View:

It's good news that the Braves don't seem too worried. Chipper will remain day-to-day from now until October.

March 9, 2009

Chipper Jones exited Sunday's World Baseball Classic game between the United States and Venezuela with a mild oblique strain, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:

The ailment is not believed to be serious, and Jones is expected to be fine by Wednesday. The elite third baseman will be re-evaluated today.

February 27, 2009

Chipper Jones hit his first home run of spring training against Pittsburgh on Friday, a two-run jack off Daniel McCutchen in the fifth inning.

Our View:

The holder of last season's batting title continues to give opposing pitchers nightmares, as he has for the past 14 seasons. Jones turns 37 at the beginning of the season and is more than a bit brittle, but he's still expected to be one of the best and most consistent hitters in the game when healthy.

February 18, 2009

Chipper Jones and the Braves are making progress regarding a contract extension, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:

Work still needs to be done and a deal is not imminent. The 37-year-old vet would be eligible for free agency after the season.

January 23, 2009

Chipper Jones, who is entering the final year of his contract, wants to remain with Atlanta, according to MLB.com. Jones said, "The Braves organization is the only one I've ever known and I want to play in Atlanta forever. But, as we've found out, it doesn't always matter what the player wants. I'm hoping that an extension will be on the table soon. I've negotiated a contract during a season once before and it worked out fine for me. But there are too many distractions and that's not something I want to do again."

Our View:

Jones held a .364 batting average and .470 OBP last season, and looks to be headed for another strong campaign in 2009 with the motivation of playing for a new contract.

Chipper Jones is doing his part to help the Braves to lure Derek Lowe to the Braves as he personally called the hurler, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Our View:

With the Braves losing John Smoltz to the Red Sox, they are scrambling to get involved in the bidding for Lowe as they could dearly use a top shelf 200-inning arm in the rotation. If the Braves are willing to go to four years on a contract offer, they could vault into the lead for Lowe's services.
