According to MLBlogs.com, the Phillies have signed free agent utility man Ross Gload to a two-year contract. Financial details are currently unavailable.
Gload represents the final piece of the Phillies bench. Last season with the Marlins he hit .261 with six homers and 30 RBI in 230 at-bats, but his real value came as a lefty pinch-hitter off the bench where he hit .318. The Braves and Marlins were also interested but missed the boat.
Ross Gload drove in what turned out to be the game winner in the fifth inning on Tuesday as the Marlins beat the Mets 2-1. Gload went 2-for-4 with the RBI in the game.
Gload has been filling in nicely for the injured Nick Johnson at first, and he has been able to provide clutch hits when he gets the chance. He should return to the bench when Johnson is healthy, and the team will enjoy the offensive upgrade when that happens.
Ross Gload was the hero for the Marlins on Tuesday as he belted a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to give his team the 4-3 victory over the Braves.
Gload made his one at-bat count tonight, as he launched an offering from Braves' closer Rafael Soriano deep into right center to win the game. Gload has only 134 at-bats this season, but serves as a nice pinch-hitting option for the team.
Ross Gload had the first two home run game of his career on Thursday, but the Marlins fell 6-5 to the Cardinals.
Gload had homered only once in 2009 before his outburst on Thursday. For the season he is batting .295 with three home runs and 11 RBIs. He does not play often enough to be any sort of a fantasy option.
Ross Gload went 1-for-3 with a solo homer in Thursday's 5-3 loss at Miller Park.
That marks Gload's first homer of the season. The Marlins only mustered six hits in the game.
Ross Gload will start at first base in today's game at Atlanta, according to the Miami Herald. Jorge Cantu is out of the lineup while nursing his bruised hand.
Gload is a career .286 hitter and is worth a look for deeper NL-only leagues.
The Marlins have acquired first baseman Ross Gload from the Royals in exchange for a player to be named later and cash, MLB.com reports.
Gload was in danger of being released by the Royals despite his $1.9 million contract. The Marlins didn't have a left-handed bat on their bench, and Gload is versatile enough to play first base and both corner outfield spots. We don't envision him having much value unless the Marlins moved Jorge Cantu back to third base or injuries hurt the outfield.
The Royals may release Ross Gload and eat the $1.9MM he is due to be paid in 2009, according to the Kansas City Star.
He became more expendable to the club after reeling in Mike Jacobs to cover first base. Gload is capable of hitting for a solid average, but offers little speed or power.
First baseman Ross Gload drove in three runs with a seventh-inning triple Thursday as the Royals beat the Rangers 7-2.
Gload played in a career-high 122 games a season ago, but it remains to be seen how much time he will split with offseason acquisition Mike Jacobs at first base.
