Newsbreakers

November 12, 2009

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Tim Hudson's three-year extension is officially a done deal.

Our View:

Hudson's three-year deal that is reportedly worth $9 million per season kicked in when he passed the physical hinged on an MRI of his surgically repaired elbow. There is an option for a fourth year, and the Braves are expected to hold a press conference announcing the deal later today.

November 5, 2009

ESPN is reporting that the Atlanta Braves have agreed to a three-year, $27 million deal with starting pitcher Tim Hudson. The deal is contingent on Hudson passing an MRI on his elbow.

Our View:

The team has had this deal in place with Hudson for a while now, but they had to wait until after the World Series to announce it. His elbow should be fine for now, but his injury history has to be a concern, especially since he got a three-year deal.

November 4, 2009

According to the MLBlogs.com, Tim Hudson has passed his physical and essentially ensured that his three-year extension is now a done deal. The team will likely make an official announcement after the World Series.

Our View:

The deal was hinged on the two parties finding a doctor that would clear Hudson and be approved by the insurance companies. Looks like they hit pay-dirt, especially in Hudson's case as he stands to make around $9 million a year for the next three years. The Braves seem confident that he has fully recovered from Tommy John, so he could be a nice sleeper pick next season.

October 28, 2009

Tim Hudson is reportedly nearing a three-year extension with the Braves, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Our View:

The deal is expected to get done by the end of the week, and Rosenthal suggests that re-signing Hudson could lead to right-hander Javier Vazquez or right-hander Derek Lowe being dealt for a hitter. The club is confident that Hudson is fully recovered from his Tommy John surgery.

October 23, 2009

The Braves are talking to Tim Hudson about a contract extension, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Hudson holds a $12MM option for 2010, but desires an extension. The two sides are believed to be discussing a three-year extension in the financial area of $27-29MM.

October 14, 2009

According to MLBlogs.com, Braves' pitcher Tim Hudson refuted a report on Wednesday that he wants to test the free agent market. Hudson said he would prefer to sign an extension with the Braves and remain in Atlanta for several years.

Our View:

Hudson has a $12MM mutual option for the 2010 season, but he said he would like to instead sign a longer-term deal with the team. He was shocked when the report surfaced that he wants to test the market, and he said he will talk to the team before making any kind of decision.

October 13, 2009

Tim Hudson will likely test the free agent market, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Our View:

Hudson holds a $12MM mutual option with Atlanta for 2010, but could become a free agent if he turns it down. The 34-year-old hurler fared well over seven starts (3.61 ERA) since returning from Tommy John surgery.

October 4, 2009

Tim Hudson tossed a gem against the Nationals on Sunday, but was denied the win as the Braves fell 2-1 after 15 innings.

Our View:

For his part Hudson allowed just one run on seven hits and two walks over seven innings. He fanned seven in his seventh and final start of the season. Four of his starts in 2009 were considered quality.

September 29, 2009

Tim Hudson was touched for four runs on seven hits and three walks over just five innings in Tuesday's 5-4 loss to he Braves. He fanned five and did not factor in the decision.

Our View:

Hudson has been solid in limited duty since joining the Braves rotation on September 1st, but was not effective on Tuesday. His ERA jumped from 3.56 to 4.08 after the outing.

September 23, 2009

Tim Hudson allowed 11 baserunners, but only two runs, in six innings on Wednesday, picking up his second win of the season as the Braves won 5-2 at Citi Field.

Our View:

Hudson is now 2-1 with a 3.56 ERA in five starts since coming off of the disabled list. He will be a part of a formidable 2010 Braves rotation.

September 18, 2009

Tim Hudson gave up three earned runs on six hits over seven innings in Friday's 9-4 loss to the Phillies at Turner Field. He had one walk with three strikeouts, and allowed two homers to elite slugger Ryan Howard.

Our View:

Hudson had a decent outing despite the two homers, and allowed three or less earned runs in three of his four starts.

September 14, 2009

According to ESPN.com, the Atlanta Braves are interested in discussing a contract extension with starting pitcher Tim Hudson. Hudson has been impressive two of his three starts since coming off the DL.

Our View:

If Hudson comes back next season, the team would have some flexibility in their pitching staff. They would likely look to trade a starter, with the most likely candidate being Kenshin Kawakami. Assuming Hudson stays healthy for the rest of the season, expect him to be back next year.

September 12, 2009

Tim Hudson was rocky on Saturday, allowing ten hits and four runs in five innings, but took a no-decision, as the Braves rallied for a late 7-6 win over the Cardinals.

Our View:

Hudson had been almost too good in his first two post-DL starts, so a day like today was bound to happen. Expect him to be somewhere in between the pitcher that got batted around today, but dominated in his first two starts, down the stretch.

September 6, 2009

Tim Hudson was excellent in his second start of the season on Sunday, allowing just one run while striking out six in seven innings. The Braves would still go on to lose to the Reds 4-2 in 12 innings, however.

Our View:

Hudson has allowed just three runs in 12.2 innings since coming off of the disabled list last week.

September 2, 2009

MLB.com reports that the Rockies and Diamondbacks had scouts in attendance for Tim Hudson's start on Tuesday.

Our View:

Both clubs are interested in acquiring Hudson's services next season, but there's still no word on what the Braves plan to do with him. He has a $12 million club option next season (with a one million dollar buyout), but with the waiver deadline having passed, both teams will have to wait until the offseason to make any noise.

September 2, 2009

Tim Hudson made his first start of the season on Tuesday and earned a win against the Marlins.

Our View:

Hudson allowed two runs on six hits and three walks over 5.1 innings. The three walks are a bit concerning, but he managed to strike out five. Not a bad return to the big leagues for the crafty vet.

August 27, 2009

Tim Hudson (recovery from Tommy John surgery) will skip his final scheduled rehab start on Friday, and instead rejoin the Braves rotation and start this Monday, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Hudson will be replacing Kenshin Kawakami in the Braves rotation. He has reportedly been hitting the lower to mid nineties with his fastball in rehab outings and sounds more than ready to go. He will likely be on a strict pitch count, but is certainly worth a flier in all formats in not already owned.

August 13, 2009

Tim Hudson allowed five hits and two runs in a rehab outing for Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday, according to MLB.com's Mark Bowman.

Our View:

His fastball topped out at 93 MPH, and he settled down after allowing four first inning doubles. He's expected to make three more rehab starts, with the next coming on Tuesday.

August 10, 2009

Tim Hudson fared well during his bullpen session Monday, and has been deemed fit to start a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett Thursday, according to MLBblogs.com. He has been recovering from right elbow surgery.

Our View:

Hudson will throw five innings Thursday, and is believed to be close to returning to the Braves. He was a strong pitcher prior to suffering the injury, and is worth stashing as a flier for NL-only leagues.

August 9, 2009

Tim Hudson is scheduled for a bullpen session Monday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:

He is close to the end of his recovery from elbow surgery, and will make a rehab start with Triple-A Gwinnett Thursday if he fares fine Monday. He is on pace to return to Atlanta later this month (as a starting pitcher), and is worth holding in NL-only leagues.

August 9, 2009

Tim Hudson is still on track to return either later this month or in very early September, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:

His return is likely to push Kenshin Kawakami to the bullpen. Not that it needs saying, but he's a definite add once he returns for the stretch run, even if his stuff is a little rusty.

August 7, 2009

Tim Hudson was scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Thursday, but he opted to push the session back a few days after experiencing some soreness in his groin, according to MLB.com. Hudson is still trying to come back this season from elbow ligament-replacement surgery.

Our View:

Hudson didn't want to risk another injury, so he decided to push the session back when he felt some pain in his groin. Hudson is hoping to come back this season, but he can't seem to make it through rehab without suffering a new injury.

July 31, 2009

Tim Hudson suffered a setback as he was scratched from Friday's rehab start with Triple-A Gwinnett after suffering a strained groin during warmups, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

Hudson will be re-evaluated by Atlanta's medical staff Saturday, and is thankful that he did not suffer an arm injury. He is trying to return from elbow ligament-replacement surgery.

July 28, 2009

Updating a previous report, Braves' pitcher Tim Hudson could return to the Braves' rotation after three more rehab starts, according to MLBlogs.com. Hudson threw four scoreless innings in his last rehab outing with Triple-A Gwinnett.

Our View:

If Hudson keeps progressing nicely, he could return to the team on August 16. He could need an extra start in the minors, which would push his return back about a week, but it seems likely that August 16 could be his return date. Stay tuned for an update on his status as his rehab continues.

July 27, 2009

Tim Hudson pitched four innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Gwinnett Monday, according to the Associated Press. He fired 47 pitches, with 21 landing for strikes.

Our View:

Hudson felt good with no discomfort after his outing. The plan is for him to make three more rehab starts, with hope of returning to the Braves at some point in September. He has been recovering from right elbow surgery.

July 21, 2009

FoxSports.com is reporting that injured Braves' starter Tim Hudson was clocked at 91-to-93 MPH and topped out at 94 MPH in his first rehab start. Hudson also said after the game that his final rehab start is scheduled for August 15.

Our View:

It sounds like Hudson was fairly impressive in his rehab start, but the biggest news of the interview was that he pretty much announced when he was returning to the team. Assuming he avoids a setback, he could be a nice late season addition for fantasy teams on a playoff push.

July 17, 2009

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, injured starter Tim Hudson threw 40 pitches of batting practice on Thursday as a final tuneup before embarking on his minor league rehab assignment.

Our View:

Hudson will head to Class-A on Sunday to begin his rehab. He's aiming to return from reconstructive elbow surgery by the end of August or beginning of September. He's likely not stashed on many rosters and may turn out to be a nice boost if you need starting pitching help down the stretch run, especially in deeper leagues.

July 8, 2009

MLB.com is reporting that injured Braves' starter Tim Hudson threw a five minute live batting practice session on Tuesday. He said he felt good after, and he plans to throw a 10 minute session on Thursday.

Our View:

Hudson is trying to come back from right elbow surgery, and it looks like he is on track for a possible return in August. He needs to keep passing these tests, but right now he looks to be in pretty good shape.

May 28, 2009

Tim Hudson threw 20 pitches during a bullpen session Monday, according to MLB.com. He is rehabbing from right shoulder surgery.

Our View:

Hudson felt great during the session, and he intends to throw 75 pitches off a mound at some point next week. He could return to the Braves by the end of August, but it is uncertain what his role may be.

May 19, 2009

Tim Hudson is progressing in his recovery from right elbow surgery, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Hudson is throwing at 150 feet and expects to be back on the mound to throw bullpen sessions next week. He said, "It is feeling phenomenal. I feel like I could go out there and get people out."

Our View:

Hudson feels good, but the team will not push him too hard. He could return to Atlanta before the end of August, but it is yet to be decided if he will work in the rotation or as a reliever.

April 27, 2009

The AP reports that Tim Hudson will consider returning as a reliever if that will speed up the process of his rehab from Tommy John surgery. He hopes to be throwing off of a mound in two or three weeks.

Our View:

Hopefully Hudson will not push himself too hard in his recovery as we have seen multiple pitchers do just that and miss more time than initially expected. Given the strength of the Braves rotation, the team would probably be open to using him as a reliever.

February 9, 2009

Tim Hudson is progressing in his rehab from Tommy John surgery, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He is regaining strength in his elbow playing catch from distances up to 120 feet. Last week he was back down throwing from 60 feet and opted to do it off a mound while at the Braves early pitching camp. He said, "I am starting to feel like a baseball player again."

Our View:

Hudson expects to be throwing bullpen sessions at some point in March. If all goes well without a setback, Hudson could return to the hill in mid-to-late August for the Braves. Hudson needs to be make a solid impact when he returns, as he is entering the final season of his four-year contract, which includes an option for 2010.

January 30, 2009

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Braves hurler Tim Hudson is currently participating in the team's pitching camp, and could start to throw off of a mound next week.

Our View:

Hudson is recovering from Tommy John Surgery. He would like to return to the team sometime around August, but whether that's realistic or not is not known at this point.

January 16, 2009

The Braves are expected to pick up Tim Hudson's option for 2010 after the 2009 season, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The option is for $12 million with a $1 million buy out.

Our View:

Hudson had Tommy John surgery last August, so he could be inserted into Atlanta's rotation later in the year. However, he won't be worth using a draft pick on in fantasy.
