Newsbreakers

October 31, 2009

As has been widely expected, CC Sabathia will start game four of the World Series on three days of rest on Sunday, according to Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman.

Our View:

Sabathia pitched eight dominating innings of one-run ball in game four of the ALCS on three days rest, so he's more than up to the call. He just has to tame Chase Utley now.

October 28, 2009

CC Sabathia allowed two earned runs on four hits over seven innings in Wednesday's 6-1 loss to the Phillies in Game 1 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium. He had three walks with six strikeouts, and was tagged for two solo homers.

Our View:

Sabathia was dominant in the ALCS against the Angels, but was unable to lead the Yankees to a win against the defending champs in the World Series opener. Game 2 is slated for tomorrow night.

October 26, 2009

According to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated, the Yankees are "leaning" toward starting ace pitcher CC Sabathia in games one, four and seven (if necessary) of the World Series.

Our View:

His starts in both games four and seven would be on three days of rest, and not the usual four. After the way he pitched on three days rest in the ALCS, it's hard argue with the decision.

October 25, 2009

CC Sabathia was named the ALCS MVP on Sunday night after the Yankees 5-2, series clinching win over the Angels.

Our View:

Sabathia was 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA in his two starts and allowed just 12 base runners in 16 innings. He struck out 12 against three walks and was far too much for the Halos to handle. Expect the fireballing lefty to take the mound in Game 1 of the World Series.

October 20, 2009

CC Sabathia only surrendered one earned run on five hits over eight innings in Tuesday's 10-1 win at the Angels in Game 4 of the ALCS. He had two walks with five strikeouts.

Our View:

Sabathia dominated while pitching on short rest, and the Yankees are now one game away from the World Series with a 3-1 lead. A.J. Burnett will try to end the Angels' season Thursday in Game 5.

October 20, 2009

The Yankees considered using ace pitcher CC Sabathia as a pinch-hitter in their game three loss in the ALCS, according to the New York Post.

Our View:

The Yanks had previously pinch hit for their designated hitter, Brett Gardner, with Jerry Hairston Jr. However, they later subbed Hairston for left fielder Johnny Damon for defensive purposes in the 10th inning, which by the rules, takes the DH out of the game if you sub him into the field. The DH spot then becomes the pitcher's spot in the lineup. When the pitcher's spot came up in the top of the 11th, the Yanks almost used Sabathia, a career .261 hitter with three home runs, over reserve catcher Francisco Cervelli. Obviously, they decided not to and Cervelli struck out. Sabathia is starting game four of the series today on three days of rest.

October 19, 2009

After a few days of speculation, the Yankees have officially announced that CC Sabathia will start game four of the ALCS on three days of rest, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:

Sabathis is 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA in two starts this postseason, and said his arm feels great after throwing eight innings of one-run ball in game on on Friday night. Game four is Tuesday in Anaheim.

October 16, 2009

CC Sabathia only allowed one earned run on four hits over eight innings in Friday's 4-1 win over the Angels in Game 1 of the ALCS at Yankee Stadium. He had one walk and fired seven strikeouts.

Our View:

Sabathia was dominant from the hill tonight, and helped the Yankees take a 1-0 lead in the series. Game 2 is slated for Saturday, with A.J. Burnett starting for New York.

October 14, 2009

AOL Fanhouse's Ed Price reports that the Yankees will indeed pitch CC Sabathia in game one of the ALCS, and then again in game four on short rest, barring an usually high pitch count in game one.

Our View:

The Yankees are going with the Brewers' Sabathia model, it appears. Including the playoffs, CC made four starts on short rest for Milwaukee at the end of the 2008 season, going 2-2 with a 2.49 ERA. He will be starting game one on eight days rest, so he should be in good shape to succeed in game four.

October 13, 2009

ESPN is reporting that Yankees' manager Joe Girardi said he plans to consider using a three-man rotation in the ALCS. He will go with CC Sabathia in Game 1, AJ Burnett in Game 2, and Andy Pettitte in Game 3.

Our View:

This is the right move as long as the pitchers can handle it, because the talent level really drops off after those three. Chad Gaudin or even Joba Chamberlain could be an option if Girardi changes his mind, but the three-man looks like the way to go.

October 7, 2009

CC Sabathia looked like the ace that Yankee fans were expecting on Wednesday. His 6.2 strong innings of work gave New York a convincing 7-2 win over the Twins to take a 1-0 series lead in the ALDS.

Our View:

Sabathia fanned eight Minnesota hitters and allowed just two runs (one earned) on eight hits over his six-plus frames. The big lefty didn't allow a walk and looked as dominant as ever on the big playoff stage in NYC.

October 5, 2009

CC Sabathia has officially been named the Yankees starter for the first game of their American League Division Series on Wednesday, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:

Not that there was really much suspense. He will be pitching against the winner of Tuesday's Tigers/Twins play-in game. In 34 2009 starts, the Yankees ace went 19-8 with a 3.37 ERA in 230 innings pitched. He was 1-1 with a 2.40 ERA in two starts against the Tigers, and 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in one start against the Twins.

October 2, 2009

CC Sabathia was lit up for nine runs (five earned) on eight hits over a mere 2.2 innings in Friday's 13-4 loss at Tampa Bay. He had five walks with three strikeouts.

Our View:

The Rays took out their frustration of missing the playoffs on Sabathia, and the ace hurler fell short of winning his 20th game. He is 19-8 with a 3.37 ERA.

September 26, 2009

CC Sabathia dominated a potent Boston lineup on Saturday. The big lefty tossed seven shutout innings, allowed just one hit and two walks and struck out eight in a 3-0 Yankee victory.

Our View:

Sabathia improves to 19-7 on the season and now leads the big leagues in wins. He's been utterly dominant down the stretch and hasn't allowed an earned run in his last two starts. He's also gone seven innings in his last six starts and has allowed two runs or less in all but one of those.

September 20, 2009

CC Sabathia allowed just one earned run over seven innings for his 18th win of the season on Saturday. He allowed just four hits and two walks and fanned eight in a 10-1 win over the Mariners.

Our View:

Sabathia is making some noise down the stretch and will definitely be in the Cy Young conversation. He has won seven straight decisions and rattled off nine consecutive quality starts.

September 13, 2009

CC Sabathia wasn't brilliant on Sunday, but he got the job done. Thanks in part to a monster offensive display by the Yankees. He allowed three runs on five hits and four walks over seven innings in a 13-3 win over the Orioles.

Our View:

Sabathia earned his league-leading 17th win, but looked less impressive than usual with the four walks and just one strikeout. You have to go back to June 21st for the last time he only struck out one batter, and that was in an abbreviated 1.1 inning start.

September 7, 2009

CC Sabathia only allowed one earned run on three hits over seven innings in Monday's 4-1 win over the Rays at Yankee Stadium. He had four walks and racked up 10 strikeouts.

Our View:

The game was tied at 1-1 when Sabathia exited, so the ace had to settle for a no-decision rather than a win for his strong performance. He trimmed his ERA to 3.40, and has not taken a loss over his last eight starts.

September 2, 2009

CC Sabathia only surrendered one earned run on seven hits over seven innings in Wednesday's 10-2 win at Baltimore. He had one walk and racked up nine strikeouts.

Our View:

It was another strong performance for the Yankees' ace, and he is now currently tied with Adam Wainwright for the MLB lead with 16 wins. Sabathia has earned a win in six of his last seven starts.

August 28, 2009

CC Sabathia was dominant on Friday, but was denied the win as the Yankees finished off the White Sox 5-2 in the tenth. For his part CC went seven innings, allowing just eight hits and a walk and fanned ten.

Our View:

CC now has five straight quality starts and has fanned 44 batters over that stretch. His recent domination has entered him into Cy Young consideration.

August 23, 2009

CC Sabathia gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits over 6.2 innings in Sunday's 8-4 win at Boston. He had no walks and racked up eight strikeouts.

Our View:

Sabathia has earned a win in five straight starts, and becomes the first hurler in the majors to win 15 games. He also continues to lead the Yankees with a 3.59 ERA.

August 19, 2009

CC Sabathia only surrendered two earned runs on five hits over eight innings in Tuesday's 7-2 win at Oakland. He had one walk and fired seven strikeouts.

Our View:

Sabathia had a nice outing for fantasy owners, and is now tied with Josh Beckett and Adam Wainwright for the MLB lead with 14 wins. He also earned a win in four straight starts, and continues to pace New York with a 3.58 ERA.

August 14, 2009

CC Sabathia only surrendered one earned run on three hits over eight innings in Thursday's 11-1 win at Seattle. He issued two walks and racked up 10 strikeouts.

Our View:

Sabathia has a three-game winning streak, and only allowed one run over his last two (15.2 innings). He is also now tied for second in the majors with 13 wins.

August 8, 2009

CC Sabathia was marvelous for the Yankees on Saturday. He held the rival Red Sox scoreless for 7.2 innings and allowed just two walks and two hits while fanning a season-high nine batters. He earned the win as the Yankees won 5-0.

Our View:

Sabathia earned his 12th win and looked every bit the ace the Yanks thought they were getting when they shelled out millions in the offseason. It was a nice bounce back outing after getting blasted by the White Sox on August 2nd.

August 2, 2009

CC Sabathia didn't have his best stuff on Sunday. He allowed five runs on ten hits over seven innings in the Yankees' 8-5 win over Chicago. He fanned five, walked none and won his 11th game of the season.

Our View:

Sabathia has allowed five runs in back to back starts and since July 2nd he's allowed that amount or more four times in seven outings. His ERA stands at 3.95 this season and fantasy owners have to be frustrated with his production considering the price they paid for him on draft day.

July 28, 2009

CC Sabathia struggled on Tuesday as he dropped his seventh decision of the season. Sabathia went 5.2 innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits while walking two and striking out six.

Our View:

Not a great outing for CC, and he falls for the first time in his last three starts. He still has 10 wins on the season, and his 3.83 ERA is still very good. Expect these poor starts to be few and far between as the season wears on.

July 23, 2009

CC Sabathia gave up three earned runs on nine hits over seven innings in Thursday's 6-3 win over the A's at Yankee Stadium. He had no walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:

Sabathia earned his team-leading 10th win of the season, and is only one win away from tying his season total of 2008 with Milwaukee. He has won in two straight starts.

July 18, 2009

CC Sabathia went seven tough innings on Saturday, throwing 116 pitches, but allowed no runs to earn his ninth win of the season as the Yankees won 2-1 in New York.

Our View:

It was a rare pitcher's duel at the new Yankee Stadium, and only CC's second win at home in 2009. Continuing a trend from 2009, he didn't strike out many batters, but also only allowed five hits.

July 12, 2009

CC Sabathia was far from dominant on Sunday. He allowed five runs on nine hits and three walks over 6.2 innings and took the loss as the Yankees fell to the Angels 5-4.

Our View:

CC is now 8-6 with a very human 3.86 ERA. He's not the same pitcher we saw last season carving up NL hitters, but he's worthy starting for any fantasy team. Perhaps he'll heat up once he's a little more adjusted to his new environment.

July 7, 2009

CC Sabathia was in control from the hill in Tuesday's 10-2 win at Minnesota, as he only issued one earned run on three hits over seven innings. He had one walk and three strikeouts.

Our View:

Sabathia is now tied with Andy Pettitte for the team lead with eight wins. He also trimmed his ERA to 3.70, and bounced back well from his last outing, when he was rocked for six earned runs against Seattle.

July 2, 2009

CC Sabathia was tagged for six earned runs on 10 hits over 5.2 innings in Thursday's 8-4 loss to the Mariners at Yankee Stadium. He had three walks and racked up eight strikeouts.

Our View:

Sabathia only allowed one earned run in each of his previous two starts, and the Yankees' ace hurler should bounce back fine following tonight's disappointing outing at home.

June 26, 2009

CC Sabathia was dominant in tonight's 9-1 win at the Mets, as he only surrendered one earned run on three hits over seven innings. He had no walks and racked up eight strikeouts.

Our View:

Sabathia nailed down his seventh win of the season, and lowered his ERA to 3.55. He played up to his billing as the ace of the Yankees' rotation tonight. He has given up one earned run in each of his last two starts.

June 24, 2009

CC Sabathia fared fine without any discomfort during today's bullpen session, and has been deemed fit to start Friday's battle with the Mets, according to Newsday. He has been dealing with left biceps tightness.

Our View:

Sabathia was never concerned with the ailment, and the Yankees' ace should be safe to employ in fantasy lineups for Friday.

June 23, 2009

CC Sabathia has pushed back his bullpen session a day to insure he is ready to take his next turn in the Yankees' rotation Friday, according to the New York Post. He said, "I feel pretty good; I will see how I throw tomorrow." He is dealing with tendinitis in his left biceps.

Our View:

He underwent treatment today, and will now throw his pen session Wednesday. The ace hurler feels like he is going to be fine and ready to go for Friday.

June 22, 2009

Updating an earlier report, CC Sabathia's status for his next turn in the rotation will not be determined until after he throws a bullpen session Wednesday, according to Newsday.

Our View:

He feels better today while nursing left biceps tendinitis, but the Yankees will be very cautious with their $161MM investment. Either Phil Hughes or Alfredo Aceves could replace Sabathia if he does not get the green light for his next start.

June 22, 2009

After leaving his Sunday afternoon start with biceps tightness, Yankees ace CC Sabathia is not expected to miss a start according to the Newark Star-Leger.

Our View:

The Yankees did not say this was for certain, however. He could apparently undergo tests on the arm today if it is not feeling as well as the Yankees like, and he should not be considered an automatic start this week until the Yanks give a definitive answer.

June 21, 2009

It has been disclosed that CC Sabathia left tonight's game against Florida due to tightness in his left biceps, according to the New York Post.

Our View:

The ace hurler was not sent for tests, and is considered day-to-day. Phil Hughes and Alfredo Aceves would be top candidates to replace him if Sabathia is unable to make his next scheduled start Friday against the Mets.

June 21, 2009

CC Sabathia exited Sunday's game against the Marlins in the second inning with an apparent injury, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

It is uncertain what Sabathia may be dealing with. We will keep you posted on his status.

June 16, 2009

CC Sabathia gave up three earned runs on six hits over 7.2 innings in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Nationals at Yankee Stadium. He had one walk and two strikeouts.

Our View:

It was not a great outing for Sabathia, but his teammates provided enough offensive support for him to earn a win. He now co-leads the Yankees (with Andy Pettitte) with six wins.

June 11, 2009

CC Sabathia struggled in Thursday's 4-3 loss at Boston, as he gave up four earned runs on six hits over seven innings. He had two walks with six strikeouts.

Our View:

Sabathia falls to 5-4 with a 3.68 ERA, and is certainly not pitching up to high expectations of his lucrative contract with New York. Aging vet Andy Pettitte still leads the rotation with six wins.

June 6, 2009

CC Sabathia did not factor into the decision on Saturday as the Yankees fell to the Rays by a score of 9-7. Sabathia went eight innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits while walking three and striking out five.

Our View:

CC looked pretty solid today, but he got in trouble by giving up the long ball. He only gave up five hits in eight innings, but two of them were bombs. That should be expected considering the game was played at the little league field known as new Yankee Stadium. Sabathia still has great stuff, and he is good enough that it shouldn't matter where he pitches for him to succeed.

June 5, 2009

Due to tonight's rain out in New York, CC Sabathia's start has been pushed to Saturday according to the Journal News.

Our View:

Adjust your lineup accordingly.

May 30, 2009

CC Sabathia gave up three earned runs on five hits over seven innings in Saturday's 10-5 win at Cleveland. He issued three walks and fired eight strikeouts.

Our View:

Sabathia was given plenty of run support to earn a win against his former team. He improves his season mark to 5-3, with four of his wins coming this month.

May 24, 2009

CC Sabathia went eight innings allowing juts three runs on nine hits and no walks, but did not factor in the decision as the Yankees fell to the Phillies 4-3 in 11 innings. The big lefty struck out four and did not walk a man.

Our View:

CC has been very sharp in his last four starts, putting up a quality outing in each. His ERA is down to 3.42 after a dreadful start to the season, an we are finally seeing the pitcher that we expected to see when the Yankees paid a ba-gillion dollars for him this offseason.

May 19, 2009

CC Sabathia was excellent again on Tuesday as he defeated the Orioles 9-1. Sabathia went seven innings and allowed one run on three hits while walking one and striking out seven.

Our View:

CC is back. He is now 4-3 on the year, and he has won three straight decisions. He looked very much like the pitcher everyone expected him to be tonight, so fantasy owners can officially rest easy at this point.

May 14, 2009

CC Sabathia looks to be back to his old self after his start on Thursday. Sabathia went eight innings and allowed two runs on five hits while walking four and striking out five.

Our View:

Not a jaw-dropping outing by CC, but it was a very good showing. Sabathia owners should feel very confident in him from this point on, as it looks as if he has put his slow start behind him.

May 8, 2009

CC Sabathia pitched a gem on Friday. The Yankee ace tossed a complete game shutout of the Orioles and allowed just four hits and a walk while striking out eight. He won his second game of the season as the Yanks cruised to a 4-0 win.

Our View:

Sabathia has had a roller coaster season, but he was brilliant on Friday. The shutout lowered his ERA almost a full run and he finally racked up some Ks. Before tonight's start he had an un-Sabathia-like 5.54 K/9.

May 2, 2009

CC Sabathia gave up eight hits and five runs (four earned) over 6.2 innings against the Angels on Saturday. He dropped to 1-3 on the season. Sabathia walked one, struck out five, and hit a batter. He threw 119 pitches.

Our View:

Yankees fans and fantasy owners have good reason to be disappointed in Sabathia thus far, but the truly embarrassing thing is that the Yankees lineup could only manage one run off of Matt Palmer.

April 27, 2009

CC Sabathia threw the entire eight innings for the Yankees in their 4-2 loss to the Tigers on Monday. He allowed six hits and four earned runs while striking out seven.

Our View:

Sabathia needed only 99 pitches to get through eight innings, and the team has to view his outing as a good one if for nothing else than the fact that they didn't have to reach into their exhausted bullpen. His seven strikeouts was his highest total of any of his first five appearances and all indications point to him getting better.

April 22, 2009

CC Sabathia had another rough outing on Wednesday, going 6.2 innings and allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits. He struck out only two and walked four, and he did not factor into the decision.

Our View:

Sabathia had been pitching better as of late, but he was not very good today. He walked four, evidence of his slight control issues, and his strikeout total of two is what is more of an issue; oh yeah, and the six earned runs didn't help either. Sabathia had a rough start to last season as well, but he is just too good to continue to struggle. Expect him to get better and be an elite pitcher before long.

April 20, 2009

CC Sabathia's scheduled Tuesday start against Oakland was bumped back to Wednesday after the Yankees-Athletics game was rained out on Monday, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

With everyone in New York's rotation being bumped back a day, aside from Chien-Ming Wang whose turn was already expected to be skipped, Sabathia loses his two-start week. It shouldn't be a big deal, however, as he'll simply get two starts next week.

April 19, 2009

Given that the Yankees have on off-day on Thursday and could skip the struggling Chien-Ming Wang's turn in the rotation, CC Sabathia, who is scheduled to pitch on Tuesday against Oakland, could have his following start moved up a day to Sunday against Boston.

Our View:

That would make Sabathia a two-start pitcher next week. This shouldn't affect any lineup decisions you make, as Sabathia is a must-start regardless of his matchups and whether he has one or two starts on the week, but it will serve as a nice bonus for Sabathia owners if the Yankees do indeed skip Wang's next start.

April 16, 2009

CC Sabathia got a no-decision against Cleveland on Thursday, giving up one run off five hits and five walks while striking out four in 5.2 innings of work.

Our View:

While the WHIP certainly wasn't where you would have liked to see it, Sabathia owners still had to be relieved upon opening the box score and checking his numbers that he gave up just one run after noticing that the Indians put up 10 in the game. While he's now walked exactly five batters in two of his three games as a Yankee, he's still allowed just one run in his past two starts and looks to be fine going forward.

April 11, 2009

CC Sabathia threw 7.2 shutout innings in the Yankess 6-1 win over the Royals on Saturday. He allowed six hits and no walks and struck out six in the contest. He s now 1-1 on the year.

Our View:

This was the dominant start fantasy owners were looking for when they drafted CC. Hopefully this is the jump start he needed, because once he gets on a roll he is darn near unhittable.

April 11, 2009

CC Sabathia and pitching coach Dave Eiland worked on a mechanical flaw in the lefty's delivery during a bullpen session Friday, according to the Journal News. Eiland thinks Sabathia's footwork, specifically how quickly he landed on his front foot, was to blame for the southpaw's poor start on opening day.

Our View:

Let's hope for CC's sake that he did work out the kinks, because he is sure to get booed roundly by the New York faithful when he arrives in town if he doesn't have a better effort in KC today.

April 9, 2009

CC Sabathia threw a bullpen session Wednesday, according to the Journal News. He said, "Whether I pitch good or bad, after the game is over, it is over. I just look towards my next start."

Our View:

Sabathia was rocked for six earned runs over 4.1 innings in his season debut with New York. His next start is Saturday against the Royals, and he shot down speculation that the heating pad he used between innings in the opener against Baltimore was a sign of injury.

April 6, 2009

CC Sabathia lasted just 4.1 innings against the Orioles in Monday's 10-5 loss. He allowed eight hits, five walks, and six earned runs in his first start as a Yankee. He failed to record a single strikeout.

Our View:

While many will choose to overreact to this performance, it's too early to expect a bad season out of Sabathia. April was his worst month, by a wide margin, last season. He tends to be a better pitcher as the season moves along and he should be a solid fantasy ace this season.

April 1, 2009

CC Sabathia was less than stellar on Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk over just 3.2 innings. Somehow he earned his third win of the spring.

Our View:

Sabathia has been hot and cold this spring, but should be able to put it all together once the season starts. He's far too talented to fail in New York and should bring his A-game on Opening Day. He's a top fantasy starter.

March 27, 2009

CC Sabathia tossed 7.2 innings of one run ball, while allowing only four hits and zero walks. He struck out seven and earned the victory.

Our View:

This is the outing Yankee fans and the Steinbrenner clan were waiting for. CC has struggled this spring, but we have no doubt that he'll be strong once the season starts. No Cliff Lee syndrome here.

March 26, 2009

CC Sabathia has been named the Opening Day starter for the New York Yankees, according to ESPN.com.

Our View:

This is not an unexpected move considering how much the big lefty received from the team to pitch for them. He's struggled a bit in spring training, with a 7.04 ERA in 7.2 innings so far.

March 17, 2009

CC Sabathia looked sharp in his four innings Tuesday night. The big lefty allowed only one hit and one run and struck out seven, earning the win against the Pirates.

Our View:

This was vintage Sabathia and should help quell the talk that he won't be able to perform in New York. He likely just needs a few more starts to shake off the rust. There should be more days like this down the road.

March 11, 2009

CC Sabathia couldn't get through two innings Wednesday against the Tigers as he allowed 6 hits, five earned runs and a walk. After that disastrous five-out performance his ERA stands at 12.27.

Our View:

Fanstasy owners are hoping this isn't a sign of what's to come. CC struggled last year in Cleveland before switching leagues and becoming the NL's best pitcher, so who knows? A few more spring starts are definitely necessary before judging one of fantasy's top hurlers.

March 7, 2009

CC Sabathia allowed an unearned run in two innings Friday evening. The high-profile free-agent pickup also struck out a pair of batters.

Our View:

Fantasy owners this season will be eager to see how Sabathia readjusts to the American League. You'll recall that he started to struggle mightily toward the end of his tenure in Cleveland before dominating the senior circuit while with Milwaukee.

March 2, 2009

CC Sabathia threw two innings of a simulated game on Monday, according to SI.com. The Yankees' newest ace tossed 28 pitches to live hitters without a screen for the first time this year and all signs pointed to a positive outing.

Our View:

Sabathia is pleased with his arm strength so far. Reports have his fastball looking strong and his cutter and other pitches should follow suit. Barring injury or an unforeseen meltdown he will be a fantasy monster.

February 20, 2009

CC Sabathia will make his spring training debut on March 6 and will be lined up to pitch the Yankees' season opener against the Orioles at Camden Yards, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View:

It is not surprising that Sabathia has been tabbed for the opener, going by the tremendous deal he signed in the off-season. He should be drafted among the top-5 fantasy hurlers.
