November 20, 2009

The Red Sox are believed to be interested in Matt Holliday, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View:

The club will reportedly consider the elite outfielder as an alternative if they do no re-sign Jason Bay. The Cardinals would also like to keep him in St. Louis.

November 19, 2009

The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that the Giants will not pursue free agent outfielders Matt Holliday and Jason Bay. Giants GM Brian Sabean said that the team is only interested in players who have a genuine interest in coming to San Francisco.

Our View:

Teams are dropping like flies in the Holliday pursuit, and it was thought that the Giants would have a major interest in a big bat this winter. San Fran likes some of the second-tier talent out there, so expect a guy like Xavier Nady to be on their radar.

November 19, 2009

Updating an earlier item, Angels owner Arte Moreno confirmed on Thursday that the team has no plans to pursue free agent outfielder Matt Holliday, according to Fox Sports.

Our View:

"We are not looking at Holliday at all," Moreno said. "He is not going to be an Angel." Quite emphatic. The Cardinals remain the early favorite, while the New York teams and many others could become players depending on the fate of Jason Bay.

November 17, 2009

Angels' general manager Tony Reagins shot down a rumor that the team is interested in free agent outfielder Matt Holliday, according to the LA Times. Reagins said the team is focused on re-signing pitcher John Lackey and infielder Chone Figgins.

Our View:

Cross another team off the Holliday list. The demand for the outfielder is looking to be getting smaller by the day, and the Cardinals may be in the best position of anyone right now. Assuming Jason Bay returns to Boston, St. Louis might have the inside track.

November 16, 2009

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the New York Yankees do not intend to sign free agent outfielder Matt Holliday.

Our View:

A school of thought has been emerging lately that Holliday might actually be most likely to stay in St. Louis, and if the Yankees are truly not interested, they would almost have to be the favorites, provided the Red Sox keep Jason Bay. That being said, it has also been reported that Holliday has no intention of giving the Birds on Bat any sort of a discount, and it is still going to take a huge amount of money to land him.

November 12, 2009

The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports that Cardinals remain interested in free agent outfielder Matt Holliday, but won't enter into a bidding war with big market teams.

Our View:

Cards GM John Mozeliak met with super agent Scott Boras this week, but still plans to set up a face-to-face meeting with Holliday himself. Still, when the Cards do make an offer, they likely won't have a lot of wiggle room. "I think it's fair to say when we present an offer, that's pretty much going to be our position," Mozeliak said. "We're not really interested in becoming involved in a long, drawn-out back-and-forth." The Cards are still very much involved, but if the slugging outfielder is going to follow the dollars and make his decision purely on who offers the most, St. Louis will have a hard time keeping up. If that situation comes to fruition, expect the team to focus on shoring up the rotation and finding someone to man the hot corner.

November 11, 2009

The New York Post is reporting that the Mets have opened talks with the agent for outfielder Matt Holliday. Mets' GM Omar Minaya met with Scott Boras for nearly 45 minutes on Tuesday night to discuss a price for the slugger.

Our View:

The Mets still haven't decided if they will go after a high-priced free agent this winter, but this meeting was likely to gauge what Holliday will be looking for. Don't expect anything to happen on him until later in the winter, but expect the rumors to run rampant until he does sign.

November 10, 2009

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Cardinals would love to retain Matt Holliday, but they are also ready for the possibility that he will go somewhere else.

Our View:

Sherman also reports that the team doesn't expect to get anything done with Holliday before Christmas. No real contenders for Holliday's services have emerged yet, but the usual suspects, the Yankees, Red Sox and Mets, have all been mentioned as possibilities.

November 4, 2009

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that the Cardinals have opened contract talks with outfielder Matt Holliday. The team reportedly opened discussions with a six-year, $98 million deal.

Our View:

These talks are just preliminary, but that doesn't appear to be nearly enough to lock Holliday up. Scott Boras has said he will use Mark Teixeira's eight-year, $180 million as a benchmark, so the Cards better get that offer increased if they want to keep the slugger.

October 18, 2009

Newsday reports that "somebody in the loop" with Matt Holliday says the slugging outfielder's top two choices in free agency are the New York Yankees and Mets.

Our View:

It's not surprising that a New York paper says Holliday's top two choices are both teams in New York, but they are definitely two of the only clubs that will be able to pay him if he is determined to pursue top dollar. Consider this the first of many Holliday hot stove updates.

October 8, 2009

Matt Holliday gave the Cardinals an early lead with a solo home run in the second inning off of Clayton Kershaw on Thursday, but made a devastating error in the ninth, dropping a James Loney fly-ball with two outs. The flub gave the Dodgers a runner at second base in a 2-1 game, and they made the Cardinals pay, plating two runs for a 3-2 win.

Our View:

It was an awful play made by a usually solid left-fielder. Few people in sports know what Holliday is going through right now, and hopefully for the Cardinals, the disappointment doesn't carry over to game three on Saturday.

September 29, 2009

According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Matt Holliday is in Tuesday's lineup against the Reds.

Our View:

Holliday has been suffering from a chest cold and missed Sunday's contest against the Rockies. He claims he could have played if it was vital to the team, but with the Cards already having clinched the division there was no reason to push him. After two days of rest he has a clean bill of health and will head back to the diamond in Cincinnati. Make sure to get him back in fantasy lineups.

September 28, 2009

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that Cardinals' outfielder Matt Holliday was out of Sunday's game due to a chest cold. Holliday said that he could have played if they game had the game been of vital importance to the team.

Our View:

With the Cards clinching a playoff birth on Saturday, there was no reason for Holliday to push it on Sunday. He should return to the lineup this week as the Cards try to position themselves for home-field advantage in the playoffs.

September 27, 2009

Matt Holliday is out of the Cardinals lineup on Sunday.

Our View:

Ryan Ludwick will start in his place in left field as he receives the day off.

September 20, 2009

Matt Holliday reached base three times on Sunday in the Cardinals' 6-2 extra-innings loss to the Cubs. Holliday was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored.

Our View:

Holliday continues to produce in a Cardinal uniform, an even when he doesn't hit for power he finds a way to impact the game. If he continues to get on base behind Pujols, the Cards will have plenty of opportunities to score runs.

September 18, 2009

Matt Holliday went 1-for-4 with a solo homer off Aaron Heilman in Friday's 3-2 win over the Cubs at Busch Stadium.

Our View:

Holliday crushed his 24th homer of 2009, and his 13th with the Cardinals. He has 17 RBI over 16 games in September as well.

September 18, 2009

According to the Twitter page of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Bernie Miklasz, Cardinals' GM John Mozeliak said that the team has table all contract negotiations with potential free agents until after the season. Matt Holliday, Mark DeRosa, and Joel Pineiro are the biggest names that will be free agents after this season.

Our View:

The Cards will have plenty of decisions to make after the season is over, but this shows that the team, from the players to the front office, is concerned about winning this season and don't want negotiations to get in the way. It doesn't seem likely that all of those players will be back, but expect some combination to return in 2010.

September 12, 2009

Matt Holliday went 1-for-5 with his 43rd Cardinal RBI on Saturday, but also stranded four runners, as St. Louis lost 7-6 to the Braves at home.

Our View:

He is now batting "just" .373 in St. Louis. For the whole season, he is hitting .315 with 23 home runs and 97 RBI.

September 11, 2009

Matt Holliday is penciled into Friday's lineup against the Braves, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

Holliday has been nursing a bruised knee, but the elite outfielder should be fine for fantasy duty.

September 10, 2009

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Cardinal outfielder Matt Holliday is expected to play Friday when the team resumes action. Holliday left Wednesday's game with a bruised knee.

Our View:

The injury was never believed to be serious, so this comes as no surprise. Holliday's knee swelled up a bit yesterday after he tripped and fell, but it isn't anything that would cause him to miss any time.

September 9, 2009

According to Matthew Leach on Twitter, Cardinals slugger Matt Holliday exited Wednesday's game against the Brewers with a bruised left knee.

Our View:

No word on the seriousness of the injury, but rest assured fantasy owners and everyone in Cardinal Nation will be holding their collective breath. More info to come.

September 8, 2009

Matt Holliday provided more dramatics for the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night, crushing a two-run homer off of Brewers' closer and all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman in the ninth inning, leading the Redbirds to a come-from-behind 4-3 victory in Milwaukee.

Our View:

Holliday now has 41 RBI in 42 games with St. Louis, and has been Sabathia-esque in the boost he's provided to the club down the stretch.

September 1, 2009

Matt Holliday gave the Cardinals their fourth straight win with one swing of the bat Tuesday. His three-run homer in the seventh inning gave the Cardinals an eventual 7-6 win over the Brewers.

Our View:

Holliday was 2-for-4 on the night and now has 35 RBI in 35 games since joining the Cardinals and is a huge factor in their recent surge that has opened up the biggest division lead (ten games) in all of baseball.

August 29, 2009

Matt Holliday clubbed his eighth home run as a Cardinal on Saturday night, helping the Redbirds to a 9-4 win over the Nationals at home.

Our View:

After finally enduring a bit of a slump in a Cardinals' uniform, Holliday has now homered in two of his past three games, and still sporting a gaudy .376 St. Louis average.

August 27, 2009

Matt Holliday hit his seventh home run as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday, but the Cards would still end up falling 4-3 to Houston at home.

Our View:

Holliday has been in a bit of a funk the past few days, going just two for his last 13, but he was bound to hit the skids for at least a few days after his incredible St. Louis start. Don't expect his slump to last long.

August 27, 2009

During a radio interview with KSLG 1380 AM in St. Louis on Thursday morning, Matt Holliday stated that he's hoping to remain with the Cardinals after this season and work out a long-term deal.

Our View:

Holliday has been an absolute beast since coming to St. Louis and he and the Cardinals are riding a bullet train into October, so it's no surprise that he would want to stick around. He apparently called the atmosphere in the Gateway City "second to none" and was excited about the idea of a Pujols-Holliday era. Still, he's represented by Scott Boras and likely won't give the Cardinals their typical "hometown discount" they constantly coax out of free agents. Since wearing the Birds on the Bat, Holliday is hitting .386 with six homers and 28 RBI in just 30 games.

August 23, 2009

Matt Holliday stayed hot on Saturday as the Cardinals blanked the Padres 7-0. Holliday went 2-for-3 with a home run, a run scored, and three RBI in the game.

Our View:

Holliday looks like the player we saw in Colorado two years ago, and he has experienced a rebirth since being traded to St. Louis. With Holliday and Albert Pujols in the middle of the lineup, the Cards have opened an eight game lead in the division.

August 15, 2009

Matt Holliday had another strong outing in Saturday's 7-4 win over the Padres at Busch Stadium, as he went 1-for-5 with a two-run homer off Tim Stauffer.

Our View:

Holliday extended his hitting streak to eight games, and is batting .412 in August, with four homers and 14 RBI. He should continue to perform up to high standards as an elite outfielder with St. Louis.

August 14, 2009

Matt Holliday turned in his third straight thee-hit effort for the Cardinals on Friday night, helping the Birds on Bat crush the Padres 9-2 at home.

Our View:

Where to begin. Since coming to St. Louis, the elite left fielder is hitting .493 in 19 games, has five games with three hits or more, 12 muli-hit efforts and 20 RBI. So much for only being able to hit in Coors Field. The Cardinals are 13-6 since acquiring him from Oakland.

August 12, 2009

Matt Holliday continued his ludicrous hitting for the Cardinals on Wednesday night, going 3-for-4 with an RBI as the Redbirds beat the Reds 5-2 at home.

Our View:

Holliday is now batting an absurd .486 in 18 games in St. Louis, and has easily been the best player in baseball since his arrival. Expect that fact to equal a big time payday this offseason.

August 11, 2009

Matt Holliday went 3-for-5 on Tuesday, but also struck out twice, including looking in the ninth inning to end the game, as the Cards lost to the Reds 5-4 at home.

Our View:

Holliday is still batting an absurd .470 in a Cardinals uniform (17 games), however, and is once again an elite option in the outfield.

August 10, 2009

Matt Holliday helped lead the Cardinals in tonight's 4-1 win over Cincinnati at Busch Stadium, as he went 1-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.

Our View:

Holliday has a hit in four straight games, with five RBI over the span. He should continue to perform up to high expectations as an elite outfielder with St. Louis.

August 7, 2009

Matt Holliday did it all for the Cardinals on Friday night in Pittsburgh. The slugging left-fielder hit a two-run first inning home run, and stole a base, advanced on an error and scored the game winning run on a sacrifice fly in the eighth. The Cardinals won 6-4.

Our View:

Holliday has simply been a revelation since coming to the Cardinals. He's batting .460 in his first 13 games with the team, and now has four home runs, 13 RBI and two steals.

August 1, 2009

Matt Holliday went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored in tonight's 3-1 win over Houston at Busch Stadium. He hit a single and a pair of solo homers.

Our View:

Holliday now has three homers and 10 RBI over nine games with the Cardinals. As expected, the elite outfielder is benefiting from a return to the NL following his trade out of Oakland.

July 31, 2009

Matt Holliday went 4-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in tonight's 4-3 win over Houston at Busch Stadium. He hit a double and three singles.

Our View:

Holliday has a hit in 10 straight games, with nine RBI over the span. He is performing up to his billing as an elite outfielder right now.

July 30, 2009

Matt Holliday went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored in tonight's 5-3 loss to the Dodgers at Busch Stadium.

Our View:

Holliday launched his first homer with St. Louis, and is batting .520 over seven games (25 at-bats). He is benefiting from a return to the NL.

July 27, 2009

The Cardinals fully intend to try to sign recently acquired Matt Holliday to a contract extension, according to Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman.

Our View:

This will be very hard for many reasons, namely Holliday is represented by Scott Boras, St. Louis isn't known for doling out huge contracts and an Albert Pujols extension is looming. Still, Holliday has traditionally been a great hitter in St. Louis, is said to love it and went 7-for-11 with four doubles and three RBI in his first three games with the club. For the steep prospect price they paid for him, though, the club will likely go all out, including big money, to keep him.

July 24, 2009

Matt Holliday had a strong debut with the Cardinals in tonight's 8-1 win at Philadelphia, as he went 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. He hit a double and three singles.

Our View:

Skipper Tony LaRussa got his wish of acquiring Holliday, and he did not disappoint in his first battle with the club. The elite outfielder is already benefitting from a return to the NL as well.

July 24, 2009

Matt Holliday has already joined the Cardinals in Philadelphia, and will play left field and bat cleanup vs. the Phillies tonight, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

Well, that didn't take long. He'll be batting behind Albert Pujols and playing in a hitter friendly ballpark, so whatever hesitations you may have about playing someone on a day they have gone through the whirlwind of being traded should not preclude you from putting him in your starting lineup.

July 24, 2009

According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Cards manager Tony La Russa has said that, "if he gets here, he plays," when asked if Matt Holliday would be in the Cardinals lineup tonight in Philadelphia.

Our View:

So, yes, the Cardinals have every intention of getting Holliday into the lineup as soon as possible. There is of course a decent chance he might not get there in time, but unless you have a very good alternative, there is no reason to bench the recently traded slugger for tonight's game.

July 24, 2009

ESPN.com is reporting that the St. Louis Cardinals have finalized a deal that will send prospects Brett Wallace, Clayton Mortensen, and Shane Peterson to Oakland in exchange for outfielder Matt Holliday and cash. The cash total is expected to be $1.5 million to help offset some of Holliday's remaining contract.

Our View:

This deal has been reported to be close all day, but now it is officially done. Holliday should slot in behind Albert Pujols in the Cards' order, and it would seem that his numbers will see a steady increase hitting in between two very good hitters in Pujols and Ryan Ludwick. Holliday owners should be jumping for joy now that Holliday is out of Oakland and into a much better lineup.

July 24, 2009

The Oakland A's and St. Louis Cardinals are apparently almost done with a deal that would send Matt Holliday to St. Louis for prized hitting prospect Brett Wallace, pitcher Clayton Mortensen and outfielder Shane Peterson, according to ESPN.

Our View:

Wow. The Cardinals are officially going for broke. Wallace is one of the top hitting prospects in the game, while Holliday is a free agent at season's end. He has also been having a down year by his standards, hitting .286 with just 11 home runs. He is having a big July, however, batting .344 with three home runs. The Cardinals have to now officially be considered the favorites in the tight National League Central.

July 23, 2009

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports has been told that the A's and Tigers could not agree on a deal involving Matt Holliday.

Our View:

The Athletics gave the Tigers a list of prospects they would want in exchange for the elite outfielder, but discussions did not move forward. The Tigers' farm system is thin right now, and cannot afford to let their top prospects go.

July 23, 2009

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the Cardinals have shown renewed interest in acquiring A's outfielder Matt Holliday.

Our View:

The Cardinals are still looking for an impact bat to help beef up their anemic offense and they currently have a hole in left field. Holliday fits, and the Cards are apparently becoming more comfortable with Oakland's asking price. It would take monster hitting prospect, Brett Wallace, which means the Cards would likely be out of the Roy Halladay sweepstakes should they make this deal. A more affordable option (and possibly the only other one) would be Washington's Josh Willingham. Stay tuned, as Holliday continues to garner interest and it will only increase as July 31st draws nearer.

July 18, 2009

Matt Holliday was productive in Saturday's 11-6 loss to the Angels at McAfee Coliseum, as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. He hit a single and a double.

Our View:

He made his fourth fielding error of the season, but helped make up for it with a solid outing at the plate. Holliday is hitting .312 (15-for-48) so far this month, and has two RBI in two of his last three games.

July 16, 2009

Matt Holliday was productive in tonight's 6-2 loss to the Angels at McAfee Coliseum, as he went 1-for-3 with a solo homer and two RBI.

Our View:

Holliday ended a 33-game drought without a homer, and only has nine for the season. His power numbers have suffered while leaving launching pad Coors Field for pitcher-friendly McAfee Coliseum.

July 16, 2009

Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune is reporting that the St. Louis Cardinals are talking to the Oakland A's about the possibility of acquiring outfielder Matt Holliday. The Cardinals have been linked to Holliday for much of the season.

Our View:

Rogers didn't give much information other than the fact that the Cardinals are discussing Holliday, so take this for what it is worth. After making a trade for Mark DeRosa already, it seems unlikely the Cards will pull off another trade unless they can get Holliday for a reasonable deal. We will keep you updated if anything else surfaces.

July 14, 2009

Michael Urban of MLB.com is reporting that there have been ongoing trade talks between the Oakland A's and Atlanta Braves on a deal that would send Matt Holliday and Orlando Cabrera to Atlanta for Yunel Escobar and prospects. Urban notes that the A's would probably have to take on a big part of Holliday's contract to get the deal done.

Our View:

If there's one thing the A's aren't all about, it is taking on part of a contract. This deal seems like a long shot, but it may be something to keep an eye on as the deadline gets closer. Don't be shocked if Holliday remains an Athletic for the rest of the season.

June 29, 2009

Matt Holliday went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in tonight's 7-1 win over the Tigers at McAfee Coliseum. Both of his hits were singles.

Our View:

Holliday extended his hitting streak to seven games, but only has one RBI over the span with the struggling Athletics. He continues to lead the club with 40 RBI for the season.

June 27, 2009

According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the Cardinals have turned up the heat and are pushing hard to get a deal done for A's slugger Matt Holliday.

Our View:

The Cardinals offense has been stagnant since April ended and the team is desperately looking for some protection in the lineup for Albert Pujols. Holliday would be a great fit and ownership is apparently on board. A deal would likely include Ryan Ludwick, Chris Perez or Jason Motte and a prospect. The Cards likely feel that they could lock up Holliday long term, as the organization rarely goes after rent-a-players. In an added bonus for the Cardinals, he rakes at Busch stadium.

June 16, 2009

ESPN.com's Buster Olney is reporting that A's slugger Matt Holliday may be more likely to be traded due to the high cost of arbitration. Holliday is unlikely to get more than the $16-18 million he would be in line for if the team offered him arbitration, and the A's are unlikely to devote that much money to one player.

Our View:

All of the speculation that the A's don't need to move Holliday because of the draft picks they will receive if they offer him arbitration and he signs with another team seems to be dwindling now. It is starting to look like the A's will need to move Holliday before the deadline if they want to get any return for him. There are plenty of teams looking for a big outfield bat, and Holliday may be back on the market now.

June 12, 2009

Matt Holliday went 2-for-3 in Friday's 3-0 loss at San Francisco. Both of his knocks were singles.

Our View:

Holliday is hitting .325 (13-for-40) so far in June after only hitting .291 in May. He still leads the A's with 37 RBI for the season as well.

June 9, 2009

Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com reports that the Oakland A's are not in active trade talks with regards to any player and have no immediate plans to initiate any.

Our View:

This could be bad news for teams planning on pursuing Matt Holliday, but the guess is GM Billy Beane won't be quite so clammy once the trade deadline draws closer. Still, Beane has also signaled a willingness to simply let Holliday walk and take the compensatory draft picks the A's would receive were that to happen.

June 6, 2009

According to MLB.com, the Cardinals could be interested in outfield slugger Matt Holliday.

Our View:

The Cards are looking for a big bat to protect Albert Pujols in the lineup and Holliday is considered to be a worthy and available commodity. With virtually everyone not named Pujols slumping in the Cardinal lineup St. Louis needs a solution quickly. Holliday would be a good fit, but it remains to be seen how much the Cardinals would be willing to give up for a three month Holliday rental.

June 5, 2009

Matt Holliday led the A's in Friday's 9-1 win over the Orioles at McAfee Coliseum, as he went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and a single.

Our View:

Holliday has two hits in five of his last six games, with two homers and eight RBI over the span.

June 4, 2009

For the fourth time in five games on Thursday, A's slugger Matt Holliday rapped two hits.

Our View:

Holliday's early season struggles appear to be firmly behind him. He is now batting .280 with 7 home runs and 33 RBIs. If you had been benching during his slump, it is definitely time to begin starting him every day again.

June 2, 2009

Matt Holliday led the A's in Tuesday's 5-0 win at Chicago, as he went 2-for-5 with three RBI. He had a single and a double.

Our View:

Holliday is hot as he collected two hits in three straight games, with five RBI over the span. He only has seven homers, but leads Oakland with 33 RBI.

June 1, 2009

Matt Holliday was productive in Monday's 6-2 loss at Chicago as he went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and a double.

Our View:

He ended a nine-game skid without a home run, with the help of launching pad U.S. Cellular Field. He only hit two homers at McAfee Coliseum this season.

May 25, 2009

The Giants are not interested in pursuing A's outfielder Matt Holliday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. An undisclosed high-level source shot down the rumor.

Our View:

The Giants do covet a bat, but are not going to chase Holliday. He only hit .240 with one homer in April, but is now hitting better with a .296 average and five homers so far in May.

May 19, 2009

Matt Holliday went 2-for-4 with a home run, a run scored, and three RBI in the A's 4-1 win over the Rays. Holliday homered in the top of the 11th to give his team the lead and the win.

Our View:

Holliday has been hitting much better in the month of May, but he still has a long way to go to live up to his fantasy hype. An outing like this is a good start, so Holliday owners have something to look forward to as the season goes on.

May 7, 2009

Matt Holliday went 1-for-2 with a home run, two walks, three RBI, and two runs scored in Thursday's 9-4 win over Texas.

Our View:

Holliday has hit all four of his home runs this season since April 30. He has nine RBI over that stretch, and while his average has not improved much, he has shown signs of the power that made him a major player in fantasy leagues in recent seasons.

May 6, 2009

Matt Holliday hit his third home run of the season, and his first at home, on Tuesday in the A's 5-3 loss to the Angels.

Our View:

Holliday has been killing fantasy owners so far this season, but his home run tonight could be a good omen of things to come. Now that he has gone deep in Oakland, maybe he will make it a regular occurrence. That's a big maybe, though.

May 5, 2009

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal doesn't expect the A's to be sellers at the trading deadline. The team is just 4.5 games out of first place despite a 9-13 record, and their two biggest trading chips that are in the final years of their deals, Matt Holliday and Orlando Cabrera, are both off to poor starts.

Our View:

We'll see what transpires over the next two months before rushing to judgment. You can bet if the A's fall too far out of contention that Billy Beane will be wheeling and dealing.

May 3, 2009

Matt Holliday was 0-for-7 in Sunday's 15-inning marathon loss to the Mariners. His A's finally fell 8-7 after five hours and two minutes.

Our View:

Holliday's average fell to a paltry .233 after Sunday's performance. He looks like a completely different hitter since being yanked out of Coors Field, and while no one expected him to reproduce his Colorado numbers while in the Bay Area, we didn't expect a slide of this caliber.

April 30, 2009

Matt Holliday hit his first home run since being traded from Colorado when the A's beat the Rangers 4-2 on Thursday. The solo shot was his only hit in five at bats.

Our View:

Holliday had gone 74 regular season at bats before knocking one out of the yard. He also failed to hit one in spring training. We expect his power to heat up with the weather, but 30 home runs is looking out of his range.

April 26, 2009

Matt Holliday was 1-for-3 with an RBI in Sunday's 7-1 win over the Rays. He raised his average to a paltry .242.

Our View:

Well, the sample size seems to be big enough now to start calling Holliday a product of Coors field. In 66 at-bats this season he has yet to hit a ball out of the park and has only five extra-base hits. It doesn't help that the lineup around him is anemic, but he doesn't look anything close to the player he was last year.

April 24, 2009

Matt Holliday indicated that he would be interested in playing for the Yankees, according to the New York Post. Holliday said, "I think a little bit as a human being you cannot help but to think that if the Yankees are interested I would definitely consider it. I would not be looking around if I were under contract for the four years, but I think I would be lying if I said I would not be interested, especially with the Yankees being such a storied franchise."

Our View:

It remains to be seen if Holliday's comments will rub his Oakland teammates the wrong way by stating that he would like to play somewhere else if the opportunity arises.

Matt Holliday went 2-for-6 on Wednesday while scoring a run and driving another in. His average now sits at .273 on the year.

Our View:

Holliday has still been relatively quiet so far this season, but his .273 average isn't that bad. His power numbers, however, are. He still hasn't hit a homer, which gives strength to those who predicted a down year for the slugger, but it is still early. Holliday is hitting the ball, and he is strong enough that the ball will start to leave the park before long.

April 17, 2009

Outfielder Matt Holliday only went 1-for-5 on Friday, but he doubled and drove in two runs.

Our View:

Holliday is still off to a bit of a quiet start with his new club, but he has seven RBI over the last four games. We figure he'll be fine in the long run. Just don't expect him to swipe 28 bags again.

April 15, 2009

Matt Holliday went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Wednesday's loss to the Red Sox. Holliday is now hitting .290 on the season, and he still hasn't managed to hit a home run.

Our View:

Fantasy circles have had mixed emotions on Holliday all year, and so far he hasn't proven any of the right or wrong. He is hitting close to .300, which is good, but he has yet to hit a home run, which is bad. Keep watching how Holliday performs at the plate, but he is still a good starting outfielder in mixed league formats.

April 14, 2009

Matt Holliday was 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI as Oakland defeated the Red Sox 8-2 on Monday. He is now hitting .333 as the cleanup hitter for the A's.

Our View:

Holliday has had a slow start to the year but a lot of that may be due to a three-game flu virus to start the season which may have disrupted his timing. Many fantasy eyes will be focused on his performance away from Coors Field and the National League this year and so far so good.

April 8, 2009

Matt Holliday (flu) is out of the lineup again on Wednesday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He does believe he'll be available to pinch hit. Rajai Davis will start in his place.

Our View:

Holliday has only appeared in one game this season due to the illness. It sounds as if he's feeling better and we expect him back in the outfield in Oakland's next game.

April 8, 2009

Matt Holliday is uncertain for Wednesday's game due to an illness, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

Travis Buck replaced him in left field for Tuesday's game, and could make another start Wednesday if Holliday is not fit to play.

March 24, 2009

The A's signed manager Bob Geren to a one-year extension on Tuesday. The skipper is now inked through 2010, and the deal includes a club option for 2011, MLB.com reports.

Our View:

The A's previously exercised an option to keep Geren for 2009, and this deal should make him feel a little bit more stable heading into this season.

March 8, 2009

Matt Holliday was hitless in three at-bats Sunday in a 8-5 win over Cleveland.

Our View:

Much has been made out of Holliday's offensive inconsistencies so far this spring, but when all is said and done, despite the new ballpark he will call home, there is little reason to think that Holliday won't still be one of the most productive outfielders in the game.

March 6, 2009

Matt Holliday drove in two runs on two of the A's 16 hits Friday in a 12-1 win over Seattle.

Our View:

Holliday had a second straight productive offensive game Friday after sleepwalking through the first week of exhibition games.

March 5, 2009

Matt Holliday was 1-for-2 with an RBI double Thursday and may be slowly showing signs of breaking out of his spring slump. He is currently hitting .231.

Our View:

Holliday should be fine once the season starts. Although his departure from Coors field into the spacious Coliseum in Oakland could hurt his production a bit, he's still a top fantasy outfielder.

March 3, 2009

Matt Holliday continued his spring struggles Tuesday against the Cubs, going 1-for-3 in a 6-4 A's loss.

Our View:

Holliday is now 2-for-11 this spring, but the lifetime .321 hitter isn't likely to carry any preseason struggles into game action that matters.

March 2, 2009

Matt Holliday isn't concerned that he is only 1-for-8 so far in game action, according to the SF Chronicle. Holliday said, "I am trying to see some pitches, so I am getting behind in the count, taking the first pitch. My timing is a little off."

Our View:

Fantasy owners should not be concerned with the elite outfielder either. He should continue to be drafted among the top-15 at the position.

February 24, 2009

The Oakland A's won't become the Fremont A's, as they scuttled the plans to build a stadium there under protest from businesses and residents in the area, according to the AP.

Our View:

A's owner Lew Wolff had planned this for about two and-a-half years, but ran into numerous stumbling blocks trying to get it done. He has expressed desire to continue to try and get a new stadium built elsewhere in the area.
