Newsbreakers

October 19, 2009

Former Rangers hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo is poised to sign an $800,000 a year offer with the Chicago Cubs for the same position, and to become the highest paid coach in Major League Baseball, according to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated.

Our View:

His likely first order of business in the Windy City? Getting Alfonso Soriano not to stink again. It won't be easy. The soon to be 34-year-old liability in the outfield is coming off his third straight season of reduced average and power production, and has missed 125 games with injury the past three seasons. Then again, if Jaramillo can revive Andruw Jones, he can probably do the same to Soriano.

October 12, 2009

According to ESPN.com, the Chicago Cubs have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to speed up the sale of the team. This move was expected for the team, as it will protect the new owners from debtor claims.

Our View:

This might have been expected, but it still looks bad for the Cubbies. Still, this is just procedural and it should help the team and the city put this whole sale behind them.

September 17, 2009

ESPN Chicago reports that after having arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, Alfonso Soriano will begin rehab exercises on Monday.

Our View:

Soriano stopped into the clubhouse on Wednesday and plans to meet the team in Milwaukee mid-road trip on Monday. His rehab is expected to take six weeks and he should be healthy to start next season. Whether he'll be effective remains a mystery and he should slip considerably on draft day next year.

September 15, 2009

Alfonso Soriano has been placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to September 4 after undergoing season-ending knee surgery.

Our View:

This may surprise some Soriano owners who thought he had been out since mid-May, since that's when he stopped hitting. Becoming increasingly creaky at age 33, and increasingly less productive, Soriano will be someone to gamble on, not build around, in next year's drafts.

September 13, 2009

The Arlington Heights Daily Herald reports that Cubs' outfielder Alfonso Soriano will have surgery on his left knee on Tuesday. Soriano will miss the rest of the season with the injury.

Our View:

Soriano has been dealing with the knee issue for most of the season, so it is a good idea for him to get it fixed now. He should be fine for next season, but there is no use having him now.
