The Nationals have opted to decline Austin Kearns' $10MM option for 2010, according to the Associated Press.
The club will instead pay the outfielder a $1MM buyout. Kearns is good defensively, but leaves a bit to be desired with his bat, as he only hit .195 in 2009.
MASNsports.com reports that outfielder Austin Kearns is expected to begin baseball activities in a couple of weeks.
Kearns, who is recovering from surgery on his right thumb, appears to be a ways off from rejoining the team. He won't have any fantasy value upon his return and won't do much to improve the floundering Nationals.
Austin Kearns had successful surgery on his injured right thumb on Friday, according to MASN.
Kearns is expected to fully recover from the injury, and be activated at the end of his scheduled 15-days on the disabled list.
According to MLBlogs.com, Austin Kearns is headed to the disabled list with a thumb injury.
Kearns, in the midst of his worst season ever, will travel to Baltimore to see a thumb specialist. He has had multiple issues with the thumb since 2001. Prospect Jorge Padilla will be called up to take his spot on the roster.
Austin Kearns is out for Washington today with a right thumb contusion, according to the Washington Post.
We pray that this news does not have any effect on your fantasy roster, as Kearns has been awful this year, batting under .200 with just three home runs in 173 at-bats.
Austin Kearns helped the Nationals take two of three from the Padres on Sunday, singling in the winning run in the tenth inning of a 3-2 Nats win.
It was a pinch hit. The hit got his average above .200, as well. That should be enough to tell you not to invest in Austin Kearns.
Austin Kearns missed the last three games while nursing a sore left hand, according to MLB.com.
Kearns said he felt better after batting practice today, and is hopeful of returning to action Monday against the Pirates. Josh Willingham has been covering his spot in the outfield while on the shelf.
Austin Kearns only had one hit on Saturday, but it was a big one. He smoked the ball out of the park with the sacs jammed for his second homer of the season, but the Nationals fell to the Marlins in 11 innings.
Despite Kearns' big hit on Saturday he's only hitting .179 this season. With one swing today he double his home run and RBI totals.
The New York Post reports that Nationals' outfielder Austin Kearns could be an option for the Yankees with Xavier Nady (elbow) possibly done for the season.
The Nationals are believed to be listening to offers for Kearns. The Yankees replaced Nady in right field with Nick Swisher, but could still use depth for the bench.
Austin Kearns went 1-for-3 with an RBI single in Wednesday's 6-4 loss to the Marlins.
Kearns has four RBI over three games, but the Nationals are yet to win a game. The club only registered five hits in today's loss.
Austin Kearns will open the season as Washington's starter in right field ahead of Elijah Dukes, according to the Washington Post.
No big surprise here, as Kearns had clearly outplayed Dukes this spring, although Dukes probably remains the more valuable fantasy commodity, since he still should start around two or three times per week and has far greater speed. Kearns may have a tough time holding down the starting gig over the entire course of the season given that he's struggled with both health and consistent effectiveness throughout his career, and thus has topped 400 at-bats in a season just twice (2006 and 2007).
According to the Washington Post, there is one outfield spot left up for grabs in the Nationals' lineup. That spot is in right and the job has apparently been narrowed down to two choices: Austin Kearns and Elijah Dukes.
It looks like it will come down to who has the best production in the remaining spring games. But if we had to choose, we'd give Kearns the slight edge. He doesn't come with all the attitude and the rap sheet that Dukes brings to the table. Then when Kearns inevitably gets injured, Dukes can have the job.
Austin Kearns was 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBI on Saturday. The home run was his second and he is hitting .333 this spring.
Once thought to be one of games brightest up and coming stars, Kearns has epically fizzled. He's having a fine spring though and is hoping to live up to his prior reputation. He'll have to earn a starting spot first though.
Austin Kearns went 2-for-2 on Monday with a double, three RBI, and a run scored.
Kearns was being bothered by a blister on his left hand last week, but he appeared fine on Monday. We'll let you know if it flares up again.
Austin Kearns has not played in a game since last Wednesday while hindered by a blister on his left palm, according to MLB.com.
His ailment is getting better and he was able to grip a bat today. He is nearing his return to baseball activities. Kearns would hurt fantasy owners with a low batting average, and is not worth drafting based on his poor track record with injuries.
