Newsbreakers

November 2, 2009

A.J. Burnett got hammered in Game 5 of the World Series on Monday as the Yankees fell to the Phillies 8-6. Burnett lasted only two innings and allowed six runs on four hits while walking four and striking out two.

Our View:

Burnett was dominant in his previous start in Game 2, but he could not get anything going tonight. He struggled to throw strikes, and he got hit hard when he did. If we see Burnett again this season, it will be out of the bullpen later in the series.

November 1, 2009

The AP reports that A.J. Burnett will start Game 5 for the Yankees. He will be throwing on short rest and gets the nod over Chad Gaudin.

Our View:

In his career, Burnett is 4-0 with a 2.33 ERA in four starts coming on short rest. He will pitch opposite Cliff Lee in Game 5 in Philadelphia.

October 29, 2009

A.J. Burnett only surrendered one earned run on four hits over seven innings in Thursday's 3-1 win over the Phillies in Game 2 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium. He had two walks and fired nine strikeouts.

Our View:

Burnett took care of business tonight while helping New York tie the series at 1-1. He redeemed himself after allowing eight earned runs over his two starts (12.1 innings) in the ALCS against the Angels.

October 22, 2009

A.J. Burnett received a rude welcoming from the Angels on Thursday, as he quickly fell behind 4-0 in the first inning. Burnett settled down after the first, and ended up finishing with a line of six innings pitched, six runs, eight hits, three walks, and three strikeouts.

Our View:

Burnett looked like he might not make it out of the first, but he settled in and shut the Angels down until the seventh. He took a no-decision in the contest, but the Yankees fell in the game by a score of 7-6. Burnett will need to be much better the next time out, because he was not sharp tonight.

October 18, 2009

A.J. Burnett was sharp in his Game 2 start on Saturday, but he didn't have nearly enough gas in the tank to go the distance in this one. The Yankees eventually won 4-3 in 13 innings to take a 2-0 series lead.

Our View:

Burnett lasted 6.1 innings and allowed two runs on just three hits and a pair of walks in his outing. He fanned four and kept the game close for the Yanks to win it on a fluke play in the bottom of the 13th inning. An errant throw scored Jerry Hairston Jr. from second with one out and the Big Apple erupted.

October 15, 2009

Pete Abraham reports via Twitter that A.J. Burnett will start Game 2 of the ALCS.

Our View:

CC Sabathia will get the ball in Game 1, followed by Burnett and then Andy Pettitte. The hard-throwing righty has allowed six runs in 12.2 innings against the Angels this season for a 1-0 record. Not the glossiest of numbers, but he was very good in his ALDS start against the Twins.

October 4, 2009

A.J. Burnett lasted just five innings on Sunday in his playoff tuneup and allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits and a walk in a 10-2 win over the Rays.

Our View:

Burnett earned the win and finished the regular season with a 13-9 record. Sunday's outing dropped his ERA to 4.04 and marked the second straight year where he couldn't produce an ERA in the 3.00s.

September 29, 2009

A.J. Burnett only allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits over 6.1 innings in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Royals at Yankee Stadium. He had three walks and racked up eight strikeouts.

Our View:

The Royals took a lead in the game after Burnett exited, so he was forced to take a no-decision for his solid performance. He allowed two or less earned runs in each of his last three starts, but only collected one win over the span.

September 23, 2009

A.J. Burnett allowed two earned runs on seven hits over 5.2 innings in Wednesday's 3-2 win at the Angels. He had three walks and racked up 11 strikeouts.

Our View:

Burnett earned his 12th win of 2009, and needs one more for the 100th of his career. He allowed two or less earned runs in three of his last four starts.

September 12, 2009

A.J. Burnett continued his roller-coaster season on Saturday as he was rocked by the Orioles for six runs on seven hits in seven innings. Burnett walked two and struck out four in the loss.

Our View:

Baltimore has had Burnett's number the last two times he has faced them, as he has allowed 12 runs in 12.1 innings. He seems to either be really good or really bad, but when he is good he can be a strikeout machine.

September 7, 2009

A.J. Burnett only surrendered one earned run on four hits over six innings in Monday's 11-1 win over Tampay Bay at Yankee Stadium in the second game of their doubleheader. He issued three walks and racked up eight strikeouts.

Our View:

Burnett collected his 11th win of 2009, and the 98th of his career. He was winless over his last seven starts, and is back on track after being rocked for six earned runs over 5.1 innings in his previous outing at Baltimore.

September 1, 2009

A.J. Burnett was lit up for six earned runs on 11 hits over 5.1 innings in Tuesday's 9-6 win at Baltimore. He had two walks and two strikeouts, and gave up two homers.

Our View:

It was a terrible outing for Burnett, and is lucky the Yankees scored enough runs for him to take a no-decision. He is now winless over his last seven starts.

August 27, 2009

A.J. Burnett gave up three earned runs on two hits over six innings in Thursday's 7-2 loss to the Rangers at Yankee Stadium. He had three walks and racked up 12 strikeouts. All of the damage came on a three-run homer by Ian Kinsler.

Our View:

Burnett has taken a loss in each of his last three starts, but pitched much better than his last outing when he was lit up for nine earned runs over five innings at Boston. His 12 K's today are also a season-high for 2009.

August 22, 2009

A.J. Burnett got hammered by the Red Sox on Saturday as the Yankees fell by a score of 14-1. Burnett went five innings and allowed nine runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out six.

Our View:

Burnett has not been great this month, and today's game was the icing on the cake. After the Yankees pounded the Sox last night, Burnett could have buried the hated rivals today, but instead he allowed them to get their confidence back. The Yanks can't be happy right now, but the Sox still have a long way to go to catch the Bronx Bombers.

August 17, 2009

A.J. Burnett gave up three earned runs on six hits over eight innings in Monday's 3-0 loss at Oakland. He had two walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:

Burnett had a decent outing, but was handed his sixth loss of the season due to no run support from his teammates. He is winless over four starts this month, afer going 4-0 with a 2.43 ERA over five starts in July.

August 12, 2009

A.J. Burnett allowed three runs on ten hits and two walks over six innings on Wednesday. He fanned seven, but did not factor in the decision as the Yankees topped the Blue Jays in 11 innings.

Our View:

Burnett has been very good his last two starts, allowing just three runs over 13.2 innings. He needed a boost after his four-inning, seven earned run performance on August 1st.

August 7, 2009

A.J. Burnett only issued one hit over 7.2 scoreless innings in Friday's 2-0 win over the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. He had six walks and six strikeouts.

Our View:

Burnett pitched well, but was forced to take a no-decision as the game was tied at zero when he exited, and it took 15 innings to decide a winner. On the positive side, Burnett trimmed his ERA to 3.67, and bounced back well from his last outing when he was tagged for seven earned runs over 4.2 innings at Chicago.

August 1, 2009

A.J. Burnett was roughed up for seven earned runs on 10 hits over 4.2 innings in Saturday's 14-4 loss at Chicago.

Our View:

Burnett suffered his first loss since June 20, and is now 10-5. This was one of his worst performances of 2009, but he should be able to bounce back fine.

July 27, 2009

A.J. Burnett dominated the Rays on Monday. His one run was unearned, and he allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out five in seven innings.

Our View:

Burnett improved to 10-4 on the year, and he's now 6-1 since the middle of June over his stretch of now eight-straight quality starts.

July 22, 2009

A.J. Burnett was sharp on Wednesday. He allowed just two runs on six hits and three walks over seven innings and earned his ninth victory in the Yankees' 6-4 win over the Orioles.

Our View:

Burnett has now registered a quality start in every appearance this month, and since June 14th he has racked up seven in a row. During that span he lowered his ERA from 4.89 to his current mark of 3.74, and is a big reason why the Yankees have left their disappointing start to the season as a distant memory.

July 18, 2009

A.J. Burnett wasn't great on Friday, but his team managed to pull out the victory against the Tigers by a score of 5-3. Burnett went six innings and allowed three runs on six hits while walking five and striking out only one. He did not factor into the decision.

Our View:

Burnett usually provides fantasy owners with strikeouts regardless of how he pitches, but he didn't tonight. This was not a good start, but he still as eight wins and has been producing quality starts. He should still be used in all leagues.

July 8, 2009

A.J. Burnett won his eighth game of the season on Wednesday. He held the Twins to two runs on seven hits and four walks over 6.1 innings in the Yankees' 4-3 win.

Our View:

Burnett only struck out two on Wednesday, but has been good to fantasy owners in other respects lately. Wednesday's performance was his fifth straight quality start.

July 3, 2009

A.J. Burnett was outstanding again on Friday as the Yankees beat the Blue Jays 4-2. Burnett went seven innings and allowed two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out seven. He is now 7-4 on the year.

Our View:

The Burnett that has come out in his last two starts is the guy the Yanks thought they were getting when they signed him to his large contract this offseason. Burnett appears to be hitting his stride, and he is a strong play in all leagues while he is on.

June 27, 2009

A.J. Burnett improved to 6-4 and pitched a gem in his first game back from a six-game suspension, allowing just one hit and three walks with 10 strikeouts while keeping the Mets off the scoreboard through seven innings.

Our View:

When Burnett is on, he's as untouchable as any pitcher in the league, and the Mets found out the hard way on Saturday. He's now fanned at least seven batters in seven of his past eight starts.

June 21, 2009

A.J. Burnett's six-game suspension for throwing at Rangers' outfielder Nelson Cruz has been trimmed to five games following his appeal hearing, according to the Star-Ledger.

Our View:

Burnett is eligible to return to the mound June 27 against the Mets.

June 20, 2009

A.J. Burnett was the tough luck loser on Saturday as the Yankees fell to the Marlins by a score of 2-1. Burnett went 6.1 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits while walking three and striking out eight.

Our View:

Burnett was outstanding tonight, but his offense couldn't figure out a way to solve Marlins' starter Josh Johnson. If Burnett pitches like this on a regular basis, he can be a very good fantasy pitcher, but don't count on this every time out.

June 16, 2009

The Journal News is reporting that Yankees' starter A.J. Burnett has had his appeal of his six-game suspension pushed back until June 30. Burnett was suspended on June 2 for throwing a pitch over the head of the Rangers' Nelson Cruz. Burnett will be able to pitch until the appeal is heard.

Our View:

Burnett put together his best start of the season in his last outing, and it looks like fantasy owners are in the clear for a few more weeks. Burnett will likely miss one start when his appeal is heard, but at this point it is unclear if June 30 is the day due to the issues within the MLB front office. Stay tuned for more updates on the situation.

June 14, 2009

A.J. Burnett made one of his best starts as a Yankee in their 15-0 win over the Mets on Sunday. He threw seven shutout innings while allowing only four hits, walking four, and striking out eight.

Our View:

Burnett has had a rocky first season in New York and he lasted only 2.2 innings in his last start. He was on top of his game today and his fantasy owners have to hope this is a sign of things to come. We're not convinced just yet.

June 12, 2009

According to Newsday, Yankees' starter A.J. Burnett is set to have his appeal heard on June 16 for his six-game suspension. Burnett is expected to miss a start following the hearing, and Phil Hughes is likely in line to take his place in that game.

Our View:

Even if Burnett gets the suspension reduced, he will likely have to miss a start, which opens the door for Phil Hughes to fill in. The way Burnett has been pitching, this may not be such a bad thing for the Yankees. Don't expect anything to change in the Yankees' rotation, but if you have Burnett on your fantasy team you need to prepare for him to be out.

June 9, 2009

A.J. Burnett struggled in Tuesday's 7-0 loss at Boston, as he gave up five runs (three earned) on five hits over a mere 2.2 innings of work. He issued five walks with one strikeout.

Our View:

Burnett falls to 4-3, and his ERA climbs to 4.89. He has been a disappointment so far with New York after recording a career-high 18 wins with Toronto in 2008.

June 4, 2009

According to ESPN, Yankees' pitcher A.J. Burnett has been suspended six games by Major League Baseball for throwing a pitch over the head of Rangers' outfielder Nelson Cruz on Tuesday night. Burnett has appealed the ruling, and he will continue to pitch until the appeals process is complete.

Our View:

Burnett owners should keep tabs on this situation, as the appeals processes usually drags out. It appears that he will be suspended at some point, but he should be good to go in his next start unless he drops the appeal. We will keep you updated on his status.

June 2, 2009

A.J. Burnett gave up three earned runs on eight hits over seven innings in Tuesday's 12-3 win over Texas at Yankee Stadium. He had one walk and racked up eight strikeouts.

Our View:

Burnett has earned a win in each of his last two outings, and is off to a good start in June. He has four wins, and Andy Pettitte and CC Sabathia co-lead the team with five.

May 27, 2009

A.J. Burnett was very good on Wednesday as the Yankees beat the Rangers 9-2. Burnett went six innings and did not allow a run on three hits while walking four and striking out seven.

Our View:

Burnett has had a rough go of it in his first season in New York, but he showed tonight why the Yankees signed him to a huge free agent deal. He has the potential, but his home ballpark should keep his ERA pretty high. He is still a good fantasy option, but don't expect this every time out.

May 22, 2009

A.J. Burnett gave up five runs on eight hits and two walks over six innings as the Yankees fell at home to the Phillies 7-3 on Friday. He did strike out seven hitters in the game, but allowed three home runs.

Our View:

Burnett just is not very good right now and his home stadium certainly is not helping. He is still getting strikeouts but his tendency to generate fly balls could kill him.

May 17, 2009

A.J. Burnett had his best outing since his second start of the season, but he did not factor in the decision as the Yankees beat the Twins 3-2 on Sunday. He gave up two runs in 6.2 innings, struck out seven, and allowed six hits. However, he also walked six batters in the game.

Our View:

Burnett's lack of control in today's game is certainly a concern, but he was able to limit the damage. He's walked 19 hitters in 38.1 innings, while striking out 32.

May 12, 2009

A.J. Burnett was touched by the Blue Jays for five runs on seven hits and four walks over 7.2 innings in Tuesday's 5-1 loss. He struck out just three hitter and was tagged with his first loss of the season.

Our View:

Burnett hasn't been good this season (5.36 ERA), which is what everyone feared when he signed a huge deal to come to New York. For some reason pitchers that are dominant elsewhere fail when they get to the Big Apple. Add Burnett to the list, barring a miraculous turnaround.

May 6, 2009

A.J. Burnett picked up a quality start on Wednesday night even though it didn't result in a victory against the Rays. Burnett allowed three runs in six innings while striking out eight.

Our View:

Burnett now boasts 33 K in 37.2 innings with a 5.26 ERA through six starts in his Yankees career. He hasn't been as strong as hoped, but his performance thus far, other than his ERA, hasn't been too shabby.

April 30, 2009

A.J. Burnett allowed four earned runs through seven innings of work as the Yankees beat the Angels 7-4 on Thursday. He gave up eight hits, walked one, and struck out five hitters on the night while leaving with a no-decision.

Our View:

After a terrible night in Boston his last night out, Burnett calmed down somewhat tonight. However, he was still hittable and his strikeout total remained average. The 32-year-old has a 5.40 ERA and 1.33 WHIP through five starts. In his last 18.1 innings, he has only 10 strikeouts.

April 25, 2009

A.J. Burnett allowed eight hits, three walks, and eight earned runs while striking out three as the Yankees lost to the Red Sox 16-11. The battered pitcher walked away with a no decision.

Our View:

Burnett had been quoted saying that he was looking forward to this game and wanted to prove that he would be a factor in the rivalry. Well, he certainly left his mark today. Without a doubt, this was his worst outing of the season, and hopefully it won't bruise his psyche too much.

April 19, 2009

A.J. Burnett allowed three hits and walked seven batters in 6.1 innings as the Yankees beat the Indians 7-3 on Sunday. He struck out just two hitters while allowing three earned runs.

Our View:

It was a bit of a bizarro day for Burnett. He entered the game with 15 strikeouts and two walks in his first 13.1 innings, but he resembled a different pitcher on Sunday. Luckily, the Yankee bats came alive late and kept him from taking his first loss of the season.

April 14, 2009

A.J. Burnett lasted eight innings on Tuesday and earned the win in the Yankees 7-2 thrashing of the Rays. He allowed just two runs on three hits and a walk and struck out nine on the night.

Our View:

We know Burnett is a strikeout maven, so the Ks will be there, but it's nice to see him go deep into a game and keep his run and walk totals low. He historically struggles with his command, so allowing just two walks in 13.1 innings this season is a huge step forward.

April 9, 2009

A.J. Burnett was solid in his Yankee debut on Thursday. He allowed two runs and seven hits in five and one-third innings as New York rolled over the Orioles 11-2 at Camden Yards.

Our View:

Burnett walked a man and did surrender a home run, but he also fanned six, which may be part of the reason why he was pulled relatively early.

March 29, 2009

A.J. Burnett had a rough outing on Sunday against the Pirates. He allowed seven runs on 10 hits, including three home runs, in four and one-third innings.

Our View:

Burnett has been solid this spring, so hopefully for fantasy owners this is simply an isolated incident.

March 24, 2009

Pitcher A.J. Burnett stuck it to the rival Red Sox on Tuesday. He held the opponent to three hits and one run over 5.2 innings. Burnett walked two and struck out four.

Our View:

Burnett has had a wonderful spring, but that's not too surprising. He has excellent stuff and is typically effective when healthy. Fantasy owners should get a good return on their investment, provided he stays off the DL in 2009.

March 19, 2009

A.J. Burnett went 3.1 innings and scattered three hits and three walks while allowing just one earned run in the Yankees 7-4 win against Toronto. He struck out one in the victory.

Our View:

In three starts this spring, Burnett has looked very sharp. He has allowed only four hits and one earned run in 9.1 innings of work. However, he has only struck out four hitters. Last season he had a 9.39 K/9 rate.

March 8, 2009

A.J. Burnett won his first game of the spring Sunday, allowing one hit over two innings of work in a 12-3 win over the Tigers.

Our View:

Manager Joe Girardi has to pleased with Burnett's outing. Any time your star hurler can breeze through two spring innings while staying healty, it's a plus.

February 14, 2009

Manager Joe Girardi has been pleased with A.J. Burnett, according to Newsday. Girardi said, "Hearing A.J. talk about how he has matured, he has learned over the last couple of years that it is not just throwing the ball through a wall. It leads me to believe that he is going to do well."

Our View:

Burnett could have a strong campaign in pinstripes in 2009, but it remains to be seen if he can stay healthy. He has only reached at least 200 innings three times in his career.
