October 29, 2009

Jerry Hairston Jr. is starting in right field for the Yankees in Game 2 of the World Series on Thursday. Hariston will take over for Nick Swisher, who has struggled in the postseason.

Our View:

Interesting call by Joe Girardi here, as it was believed that Brett Gardner might take over for Swisher instead. We will see how it works out, but the Yanks can't afford a mistake down 1-0 to the defending champs at home.

September 24, 2009

According to MLB.com, Yankees' utility man Jerry Hairston Jr. is day-to-day after an MRI revealed tendinitis in his left wrist. Hairston is likely to miss a few games with the injury.

Our View:

Hairston Jr. got a cortisone shot in the wrist today, so he will surely be out for the lext several days. He should be able to make it through the rest of the season, especially since he is not playing everyday.

September 23, 2009

Jerry Hairston Jr. exited today's battle against the Angels with an apparent left wrist injury, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Hairston was batting .235 (16-for-68) with two home runs and 11 RBI over 40 games with New York heading into today's game. The severity of his injury is yet to be disclosed.

July 31, 2009

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Yankees have acquired Jerry Hairston Jr. from the Cincinnati Reds.

Our View:

No word on what the Reds' compensation was yet. Hairston is versatile in the field and could be a decent bat off the bench or defensive replacement for the Pinstripers. He is hitting .254 with eight homers this season.

July 29, 2009

Jerry Hairston Jr.'s fourth inning home run ended up being the only thing between the Reds and getting no-hit on Wednesday night. Mat Latos and two Padres relievers combined on a one-hitter, as San Diego won 7-1 in Cincinnati.

Our View:

It was Hairston's first home run since May 30. He has no fantasy value outside of NL-only leagues at this point.

June 3, 2009

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Jerry Hairston Jr. will return to the starting lineup on Wednesday after missing two games with the flu.

Our View:

Hairston will play third Wednesday, which means that Adam Rosales will be knocked out of the starting lineup. Still, Hairston isn't much of a fantasy option outside of NL-only leagues.

May 10, 2009

Jerry Hairston Jr. went 2-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored, and an RBI as the Reds fell in 10 innings to the Cardinals on Monday.

Our View:

Hairston has played well over the past week. He has 10 hits in his last six games to go with eight runs scored. He has also hit a home run in each of his last two games. It's unlikely that he keeps this run up for very long, and he will probably return to a utility reserve role once Alex Gonzalez returns.

May 8, 2009

Jerry Hairston Jr. was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in the Reds' 6-4 win over the Cardinals on Friday.

Our View:

Hairston had a nice game, but performances like this have been too few and far between for him this season. He's only hitting .210 with one home run and four RBI on the season. There are better fantasy options in every direction.

April 25, 2009

Jerry Hairston Jr. went 0-for-2 on Saturday to drop his average to just .161 on the year for the Reds.

Our View:

Hairston has just two RBI on the year and has yet to register a single steal on the year, this after hitting .326 with 15 steals in a 261 AB season last year. While some might view Jerry's work so far this year as an anomaly, the truth is that the anomaly was last year's effort.

March 25, 2009

Jerry Hairston Jr. is back to his regular routine following his nasty bout with the flu, according to MLB.com. He said, "The doctor said, 'Now you know why people get flu shots.' I will be the first in line to get one next year."

Our View:

Hairston should be fine, and is worth a look as a source for speed for NL-only leagues, as he stole 15 bags in 2008.

March 20, 2009

Jerry Hairston Jr. will return to camp Saturday, and work out with the Reds on Sunday, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. He has been dealing with the flu.

Our View:

Hairston should be fine with just a bit of rest. He could be a decent speed option for NL-only leagues, as he swiped 15 bases over 261 at-bats in 2008.

February 25, 2009

Jerry Hairston Jr. went 1-for-3 with a grand slam in Wednesday's 7-0 win over the Rays.

Our View:

Hairston started at shortstop with Alex Gonzalez (knee) not ready to go, and he made the most of it today.

January 7, 2009

Walt Jocketty told the Cincinnati Enquirer that recently re-signed Jerry Hairston Jr. is not expected to be the starting shortstop for the Reds next season, citing the positive rehab of Alex Gonzalez's knee. He expects to use him more in left firld.

Our View:

Hairston will almost undoubtedly man shortstop if Gonzalez is unable to go at the start of the season. If he does not find a regular job, he will have no fantasy value.

January 7, 2009

Jerry Hairston Jr. has agreed to a one-year deal worth $2 million (guaranteed) to remain with the Reds, according to the Hot Stove Blog on MLB.com. It could be worth up to $4 million with incentives.

Our View:

He opted to stay in Cincinnati, rather than join other interested clubs Kansas City and St. Louis. Hairston will likely be the Reds' starting shortstop unless Alex Gonzalez proves he is ready following knee surgery.

January 5, 2009

The Reds had talks with Jerry Hairston Jr. over the weekend, according to MLB.com. The Reds are looking to re-sign him after he had a productive season in 2008 when healthy. "I would expect something to happen this week, one way or another," Reds GM Walt Jocketty said. "We're hopeful."

Our View:

Hairston Jr. would give the Reds' roster lots of versatility as he can play the outfield or middle infield for the club.
