Newsbreakers

September 30, 2009

Brad Penny dominated the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, allowing just one unearned run in a complete game performance, as the Giants won 4-1 at home.

Our View:

It was only the fourth complete game of his career. Penny has been sensational since coming to San Francisco, going 4-1 with a 2.59 ERA in six starts.

September 25, 2009

Brad Penny deserved better than a no decision on Thursday, but his closer couldn't finish and the Giants fell to the Cubs 3-2. Penny went eight strong innings and allowed only one run on seven hits while walking one and striking out four.

Our View:

Penny has been outstanding as a Giant minus his last start against the Dodgers, and he found the magic again tonight. If he is going to pitch for the Giants, he better get used to doing it without a ton of run support.

September 19, 2009

Brad Penny was destroyed by the Dodgers on Saturday. He lasted just 2.2 innings after allowing seven runs on five hits and three walks. He also served up three homers in the embarrassing 12-1 loss.

Our View:

Penny has been brilliant since joining the Giants this season, but the wheels came off on Saturday. He was 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA in three starts before the LA bloodbath. It was the second time this season he'd allowed three homers in a game.

September 13, 2009

Brad Penny won his third start in as many opportunities with his new team on Sunday. He allowed just two runs on five hits and a pair of walks and stuck out two in the 7-2 win over the rival Dodgers.

Our View:

Penny has posted not just a win, but a quality start as well in each of his three starts with the Giants. He has allowed just four total runs in 22 innings with his new club.

September 7, 2009

Brad Penny only allowed two earned runs on three hits over seven innings in Monday's 9-4 win over the Padres at AT&T Park. He had one walk and fired six strikeouts.

Our View:

Penny is 2-0 over two starts with the Giants, and only issued two earned runs over 15 innings. He is benefiting from a return to the NL after leaving Boston.

September 2, 2009

Brad Penny was fantastic in his Giants debut on Wednesday. He shut out a loaded Phillies lineup in their own ballpark for eight innings and earned his first National League win with a 4-0 victory.

Our View:

Penny allowed just five hits and a walk in the contest and fanned a pair of Phillies. Looks like the thought that a transition back to the NL would help him was right on. Still, it's hard not to improve on the 7-8 record and 5.61 ERA he had in Boston.

August 31, 2009

According to Sports Illustrated, former Red Sox's pitcher Brad Penny has signed a deal with the San Francisco Giants. Penny cleared waivers earlier this afternoon, and he chose to sign with the Giants over several others who were interested.

Our View:

Well that sure didn't take long. The Giants have been interested in Penny since he became available, and they feel like they helped solidify their rotation with this move. The Giants better hope for the same boost that John Smoltz got by heading to the NL, because Penny wasn't great for the Sox.

August 31, 2009

Brad Penny reportedly went unclaimed by Monday's 2:00 p.m. deadline, according to the Twitter page of Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman. Penny will now become a free agent and will be free to sign with any team he chooses.

Our View:

It's a pretty big shocker that Penny didn't get claimed by anyone, but it seems almost certain that he will be pitching with someone soon. Teams that have expressed interest publicly include the Giants, Twins, Marlins, and Yankees, and there could be other teams interested as well. Expect to hear news on his destination soon.

August 29, 2009

The Marlins are reportedly serious about acquiring Brad Penny, according to FOX Sports.

Our View:

The Marlins are 4.5 games back in the NL wild card standings, and believe that Penny could improve their chances of making the playoffs. He struggled with Boston, but could benefit from a return to the NL.

August 29, 2009

The Rockies are believed to be losing interest in acquiring Brad Penny, according to the Denver Post.

Our View:

The club still thinks he can be an effective pitcher, but have concerns regarding how he would fit in their clubhouse. Penny would like to play for a contender, with the Rangers, Marlins and White Sox among the teams interested in him.

August 27, 2009

The Minnesota Star-Tribune reports that the Twins may consider claiming Brad Penny off of waivers instead of waiting on him to become a free agent. Although Penny said he had been released last night, he was not on waivers as of this morning.

Our View:

The Rockies and Marlins have both been reported to have interest in the struggling starter as well. The more teams that take an interest, the more likely a waiver claim is made.

August 27, 2009

According to FOXSports.com, the Dodgers, Rockies, Marlins, Giants and Rays are all interested in the services of recently released starter Brad Penny.

Our View:

The Red Sox released Penny Wednesday night and he should clear waivers on Monday, but teams are free to begin talking with him at any point. He struggled in the heavy-hitting AL East (5.61 ERA, 1.53 WHIP), but could reinvent himself in the National League, where he has performed much better in his career. A move to the Rockies would be interesting, as there may be some bad blood lingering between Penny and the division-rival Dodgers.

August 26, 2009

Brad Penny has reportedly been granted his release by the Red Sox, according to the Boston Herald. Penny said, "I asked for my release and I got it. I enjoyed playing with all of the guys. I played for a great manager on a great team. I had a great time. I enjoyed it. I wish things had worked out better, but that happens."

Our View:

Penny was dropped from Boston's rotation after only claiming one win over his final 11 starts. He is now hopeful of catching on with another team that will give him a shot to start.

August 23, 2009

Brad Penny has been dropped from the Red Sox rotation in favor of Tim Wakefield, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:

And justifiably so. Penny has gone 0-3 in August while allowing 20 runs in 21.2 innings, good for an 8.31 ERA. He could get the ball again if more injuries hit the Sox's starting staff, but for now he has zero fantasy value.

August 21, 2009

Brad Penny was victimized by the Bronx Bombers on Friday night as he was touched for eight runs on ten hits and a walk over just four innings. He took the loss as the Sox fell 20-11.

Our View:

The eight-run shellacking was Penny's worst outing since his second start of the season, where he matched his ER allowed total in just a three inning start.

August 15, 2009

Brad Penny was tagged for four earned runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings in Saturday's 7-2 loss at Texas. He had four walks and six strikeouts.

Our View:

Penny falls to 7-7 with a 5.22 ERA. He has taken a loss in three of his last four starts, and will remain an unstable fantasy option for his next trip to the hill.

August 10, 2009

Brad Penny gave up three earned runs on six hits over six innings in Monday's 6-5 win over the Tigers at Fenway Park. He had one walk and two strikeouts.

Our View:

The Tigers tied the game at 5-5 in the seventh inning, so Penny ends the night with a no-decision rather than a win. He is now winless over his last three starts, but pitched better after allowing five earned runs over six innings in his last outing at Tampa Bay.

August 5, 2009

Brad Penny was rocked for five earned runs on six hits over six innings in Wednesday's 6-4 loss at Tampa Bay. He had two walks and five strikeouts, and was tagged for three homers.

Our View:

Penny has allowed 12 earned runs over his last two starts, and only earned one win over his last eight outings. He is just an option for AL-only leagues.

July 29, 2009

Brad Penny was roughed up for seven earned runs on seven hits over five innings in Wednesday's 8-6 loss to Oakland at Fenway Park. He had four walks and three strikeouts, and was tagged for two homers.

Our View:

Penny's ERA climbs to 5.07, and has only claimed one win over his last seven starts. He should only be considered for AL-only leagues in his next trip to the hill.

July 24, 2009

Brad Penny was in control from the hill in Friday's 3-1 win over the Orioles at Fenway Park, as he only surrendered one run (not earned) on five hits over 6.1 innings. He had no walks with four strikeouts.

Our View:

Penny improves to 7-4, and ended a five-game drought without earning a win. Tonight's strong performance should help his trade value with the July 31 deadline approaching.

July 20, 2009

The Boston Globe suggests that the Red Sox may be more inclined to move starter Brad Penny after the impressive performance by Clay Buchholz on Friday. Penny is a notorious weak second-half performer, and Buchholz has proven he is ready to pitch at the major league level.

Our View:

Penny got rocked in his start on Saturday against the Blue Jays, just one day after Buchholz had relatively little trouble with the same lineup. With Dice-K lurking as well, it seems like a smart move to move Penny before he struggles enough to lose trade value.

July 18, 2009

Brad Penny got shelled by the Blue Jays on Saturday, allowing six earned runs in just five innings as Boston lost 6-2 at home.

Our View:

Penny had lowered his ERA from 5.85 on June 5 to just 4.71 recently, but saw it balloon to over five again on Saturday. He is a decent option in AL-only leagues, but a fringe player in most mixed formats. He's just as liable to get hit hard as he is to throw six scoreless innings.

July 9, 2009

Brad Penny gave up three earned runs on six hits over five innings in Thursday's 8-6 loss to the Royals at Fenway Park. He had one walk and one strikeout.

Our View:

Penny ended the night with a no-decision, and is winless over his last four starts. He has a 4.71 ERA for the season, and is only an option for deeper fantasy leagues for his next start.

July 4, 2009

Brad Penny was solid on the Fourth of July, striking out six in six innings while surrendering only two runs, but took a no-decision as the Red Sox lost 3-2 to the Mariners.

Our View:

Penny has lowered his ERA to 4.67 from 6.69 on May 14, on is worth a roster spot in deeper mixed or AL-only leagues.

June 28, 2009

Brad Penny pitched very well on Sunday, but was handed his third loss of the season. He allowed just two runs on six hits over six innings, but the Red Sox fell 2-1 to the Braves.

Our View:

Penny only struck out two, but did not walk a man in Sunday's outing. He's now put together four decent starts in a row, but has failed to go beyond 6.1 innings the entire season.

June 23, 2009

Brad Penny gave up three earned runs on six hits over 5.2 innings in Tuesday's 11-3 win at Washington. He had three walks and fired six strikeouts.

Our View:

The game was tied 3-3 when Penny exited, so he takes a no-decision rather than a win. He remains at 6-2 for the season.

June 19, 2009

Brad Penny is still likely to get moved at some point before the trade deadline, but according to the New Hampshire Union Leader it may not be for awhile. The Red Sox are comfortable going with a six-man rotation for the time being, mainly because it will allow them to ease in and evaluate John Smoltz before they get rid of Penny.

Our View:

With the trade market being pretty slim at this point, the Sox feel like they are best served to keep Penny in the rotation as an insurance policy for Smoltz. As teams start to transition from neutral to buyers and sellers, the Red Sox will then look to unload Penny assuming Smoltz holds up. Penny owners should be prepared for a move, but not as quickly as everyone originally thought.

June 18, 2009

The Boston Globe is reporting that several teams sent scouts to watch Brad Penny in his start on Wednesday against the Marlins. The two teams believed to be most interested are the Rangers and Phillies.

Our View:

Penny pitched fairly well in what amounts to an audition for other clubs last night, and it looks like he will be dealt sooner rather than later. He could be a nice addition in either Texas or Philly, but don't be shocked if one or more other teams make a play for him as well. The effect a trade will have on his fantasy value will be determined by which team he goes to, so check back after a deal is struck.

June 17, 2009

Brad Penny improved to 6-2 on the season with a 6-1 win over the Marlins on Wednesday. He only threw five innings, gave up three hits, and walked four batters in the victory. He gave up only one unearned run.

Our View:

Despite the four walks in only five innings, Penny improved his trade value tonight. The Red Sox have fielded a lot of calls for the starter, and something should happen soon.

June 14, 2009

The Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox have received multiple trade offers for starter Brad Penny. He will be eligible to be traded on Monday.

Our View:

John Smoltz is on the verge of returning to the rotation and Penny seems to be the most likely player to be moved. Penny said earlier in the week that he has no interest in pitching out of the bullpen. Opposing hitters are batting .305 off of Penny this season, leading to a 5.32 ERA and 1.56 WHIP. The Cardinals, Mets and Phillies have been linked to recent trade rumors surrounding him.

June 12, 2009

Sports Illustrated is reporting that the Cardinals, Mets and Phillies all have interest in Red Sox starting pitcher Brad Penny.

Our View:

The Sox want to move Penny to make room in the rotation for John Smoltz. Penny may have hurt his trade value earlier this week, however, when he told the Providence Journal he has no interest in going into Boston's bullpen. This reduces Boston's leverage when it comes to dealing the burly righty. Still, most of the teams after him are probably desperate enough to give the Sox what they want, and chances are slim that he finishes the month in a Boston uniform.

June 12, 2009

Brad Penny told the Providence Journal that he has no interest in moving to the bullpen to make room for John Smoltz, who is expected to return to the team next week. Penny is the most likely candidate to move, but the Red Sox have been actively shopping him to other teams. If Penny can't be moved before Smoltz returns, expect him to make the move to the pen.

Our View:

After a stellar outing in his start last night, Penny's trade value appears to be at an all-time high right now. The Red Sox are going to have to do something with Penny when Smoltz returns, so expect them to work hard to try to move him since he has no desire to move to the bullpen. His fantasy value rests upon him remaining a starter, so if he stays in a Sox' uniform for a few more weeks his value will take a big hit.

June 11, 2009

Brad Penny threw well in Thursday's 4-3 win over the rival Yankees at Fenway Park, as he only allowed six hits over six scoreless innings. He issued one walk and fired five strikeouts.

Our View:

Penny left the game with a 1-0 lead, but the Yankees scored three runs in the seventh inning, forcing Penny to take a no-decision rather than a much-deserved win. This outing should improve his stock if the Sox decide to deal him, which has been suggested in rumors.

June 5, 2009

Brad Penny had a tough outing in Friday's 5-1 loss to the Rangers at Fenway Park, as he gave up five earned runs on seven hits over 5.2 innings. He had two walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:

Penny only took his second loss of the season, with his previous loss coming back on May 3 at Tampa Bay. Only 59 of his 103 pitches landed for strikes tonight.

June 5, 2009

Brad Penny is reportedly on the Phillies' radar, according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com.

Our View:

The Red Sox would want infield prospect Jason Donald in exchange for Penny. The Phillies covet pitching help with Brett Myers (torn labrum) likely done for the season.

June 5, 2009

ESPN's Buster Olney is reporting that the Braves have interest in acquiring Brad Penny.

Our View:

After releasing Tom Glavine and calling up prospect Tommy Hanson, the Braves are apparently still looking to improve their rotation. Penny has struggled at times this season, but has recently been throwing well, and would be a much better fantasy fit in Atlanta, as Turner Field is much more pitcher friendly park than Fenway.

June 5, 2009

The Providence Journal is reporting that there is a good chance tonight's Red Sox game could be rained out. Brad Penny is scheduled to start.

Our View:

Stay tuned for updates.

May 30, 2009

Brad Penny allowed 10 hits in six innings as Boston fell 5-3 to Toronto on Saturday. He did not walk a batter and only gave up two earned runs. He did not factor into the decision.

Our View:

Penny has allowed 70 hits in 54.1 innings of work this season and his WHIP is up to 1.60. The Red Sox would prefer to trade him as John Smoltz is due to come back in a couple of weeks and they may not have space on their pitching staff for Penny.

May 21, 2009

Jayson Stark of ESPN states that the Red Sox are open to listening to offers for Brad Penny.

Our View:

The Red Sox could afford to let him go as they have several strong prospects in the minors like Clay Buchholz and Justin Masterson. The Phillies, Indians and Mets could all be interested in Penny. The White Sox could garner interest as well if Jake Peavy rejects their trade.

May 21, 2009

Brad Penny moved to 4-1 on the year with his win over the Blue Jays on Wednesday. Penny went 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out two.

Our View:

Penny is starting to pitch a bit better as of late, but his ERA is still at 6.07 on the year. If he starts pitching like this on a regular basis, he could have some value pitching for a good team like the Sox, but right now he is AL-only worthy at best.

May 14, 2009

Brad Penny put forth a very pedestrian outing for the Red Sox on Thursday, but he did not factor into the decision as the Sox lost to the Angels in 12 innings. Penny went 6.1 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out four.

Our View:

Not bad, but not great for Penny. His ERA is still sky high, but his team is giving him plenty of support. His value is probably limited to AL-only until he gets the ERA down, but if he doesn't he may lose all value.

May 8, 2009

Brad Penny has a quality start on Friday and earned his third victory of the season in Boston's 7-3 win over the Rays. He allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks over 6.1 innings.

Our View:

Penny hasn't been good this season, but Boston's offense has been good to him. He is now 3-1, but is sporting a 6.90 ERA. He has also only struck out 16 in 30 innings this year.

May 3, 2009

Brad Penny gave the Red Sox a quality start on Sunday, but it wasn't enough as they fell to the Rays 5-3. Penny allowed three runs on six hits and two walks over six innings and took the loss. On the bright side, he struck out eight.

Our View:

Penny wasn't great on Sunday, but he was much better than he has been most of the season. It was especially nice to see him rack up some strikeouts. Coming into the game he had only fanned six in 17.2 innings. If this is a sign of things to come Penny could be a hot waiver pick up in the near future in mixed leagues.

April 22, 2009

Brad Penny picked up his second win of the season on Wednesday as the Red Sox beat the Twins 7-3 in the second game of heir doubleheader. Penny went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out two and walking one.

Our View:

Penny pitched well, but he has been far from impressive so far this season. His strikeout total of five in three starts is shocking, and he just doesn't appear to be the same pitcher he once was. He is 2-0, however, and will likely continue to get wins pitching for the Red Sox.

April 17, 2009

Brad Penny struggled badly in Friday's outing against the Orioles. He allowed six hits and eight runs over three innings. Penny also walked five batters.

Our View:

The Orioles lineup has been hot recently, but that doesn't excuse the awful outing and five walks. Penny still has a long ways to go before he earns our trust.

April 11, 2009

Brad Penny was solid, but unspectacular in his first start of the season. He allowed three runs on five hits and two walks over six innings and earned the win as Boston topped Anaheim 5-4 Saturday.

Our View:

Penny wasn't great, but was certainly better that his 6.27 ERA season of 2008. Watch to see how he fares over the next few starts before banking on him as one of your top five starters. His health is always an issue, but the win and quality start today were a nice bonus.

April 6, 2009

Brad Penny's turn in Boston's rotation will be bumped up from April 12 to April 11 following the postponement of their matchup against Tampa Bay on Monday, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:

The postponement pushes Josh Beckett's start back to tomorrow, and thus, his originally scheduled start on April 11 would have only been on four days of rest, so Penny gets moved up a day as a result. Penny is still set to face Anaheim, so this news shouldn't alter your plans if you planned on having him active in your lineup this weekend.

April 3, 2009

MLB.com reports that Boston starter Brad Penny will fly back to Fort Myers, Florida, to pitch in a camp game after Monday's season opener.

Our View:

Penny's turn in the rotation does not come around until April 12, so the Sox are sending him back to spring camp to get some extra work in.

April 1, 2009

The Boston Herald reports that Brad Penny is confident that he will be able to man the fifth spot in the Red Sox rotation and make that scheduled start on April 12. He will throw his final spring training game on Thursday and be evaluated afterwards. If all appears well with his shoulder, he would likely be named the Red Sox fifth starter.

Our View:

Clay Buchholz is in the mix as well, and he has had a very good spring. If Penny does experience any problems with his shoulder, he will likely start the season on the DL.

March 29, 2009

The Red Sox are yet to name their fifth starter in the rotation, and want to evaluate Brad Penny, according to the Boston Globe. Skipper Terry Francona said, "You do not want to rush into something because there is an arbitrary date. We need a pitcher, but we do not want to make a mistake, either. Penny has been great about buying into everything. We will continue to talk to him and see how he is progressing."

Our View:

Penny was hindered by shoulder fatique earlier in spring training, but felt great in his first start last Monday when he worked three innings. Either Penny or Clay Buchholz will be the No. 5 starter. Justin Masterson will hold a role in the bullpen.

March 25, 2009

Brad Penny reported no issues a day after his first spring start, according to the Boston Globe. He has been dealing with a sore shoulder. Skipper Terry Francona said, "He is upbeat and he is feeling good about himself, as he should."

Our View:

This is encouraging, and Penny is worth a look as a flier for AL-only leagues. Penny went 16-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 2007 prior to suffering through an injury-spoiled 2008 campaign.

March 23, 2009

Brad Penny did not allow any runs or hits over three innings in Monday's 7-6 win over Detroit, with one walk and three strikeouts.

Our View:

This was a strong Grapefruit League debut for Penny, who has been recovering from a sore shoulder. He remains a risky fantasy option, but is worth targeting in AL-only leagues as a flier.

March 22, 2009

MLB.com reports that Brad Penny will make his Grapefruit League debut on Monday.

Our View:

Penny's shoulder has been a concern ever since his poor 2008 performance with the Dodgers. He will be given a very good chance to make the Red Sox rotation, but his durability figures to once again be an issue in 2009.

March 19, 2009

Brad Penny reportedly looked great during a throwing session in a minor league game Wednesday, according to the Providence Journal. He threw three scoreless innings, with four strikeouts. He feels like he is ready to pitch for the first week of the regular season and he said, "Yeah, I think I am. I mean, I feel like it, so, that is not my decision, so I am going to listen to their program and go along with them."

Our View:

This is encouraging news, regarding the possibility that his weak shoulder will be strong enough when it is his turn to pitch in the rotation, around April 10 or 11. He will next pitch against the Tigers on March 23, and he will namely need to build his pitch count up.

March 17, 2009

Brad Penny, who is recovering from a sore shoulder, is slated to throw one more minor league game on Wednesday, according to the Boston Globe. Barring a setback, he would pitch in his first major league game five days later.

Our View:

Penny will remain a risky fantasy prospect, but will have a chance to succeed if healthy, with a solid supporting cast and while playing his home games at pitcher-friendly Fenway Park.

March 11, 2009

Brad Penny is progressing in his recovery from a sore shoulder, according to the Boston Globe. He threw 20 pitches in live batting practice Tuesday, and pitching coach John Farrell said it was "another encouraging step" toward making his spring debut.

Our View:

He was pitching at around 90-95 capacity, and will throw a simulated game to minor leaguers on Friday. Barring a setback, Penny could make his Grapefruit League debut in the middle of next week.

March 10, 2009

Brad Penny will throw live batting practice today, and not Thursday as was previously stated by the club, according to the Boston Globe. Skipper Terry Francona simply got the days mixed up.

Our View:

If his session goes fine without any issues regarding his sore shoulder, Penny could move on to pitching a simulated game. The Red Sox remain uncertain if he will be ready for the start of the season.

March 9, 2009

Brad Penny is scheduled to throw live batting practice on Thursday, and if all goes well, he could pitch in a simulated game one week later, the Providence Journal reports. The Red Sox aren't sure if Penny will be ready for the start of the season. He coming off a sore shoulder that limited him in 2008.

Our View:

The Red Sox may not need to use their No. 5 starter until around May 12, so Penny still has a lot of time to ramp up. For now, it's simply good news to know he is headed in the right direction.

March 8, 2009

Brad Penny fared fine in Sunday's bullpen session, according to the Providence Journal. He did not throw very hard, but he said, "Today was probably the best I have felt overall."

Our View:

This is encouraging, and marks the first time he pitched off a mound in a week. He would be worth a look as a late-round flier in case he can bounce back with better health after suffering through shoulder problems in 2008.

March 8, 2009

Brad Penny will throw around 35 pitches in a bullpen session today, according to the Boston Globe. He was scratched from his start on Thursday due to fatigue in his right shoulder.

Our View:

He battled shoulder problems last season, which compromised his velocity. He would be worth a look as a late-round flier, in case he can bounce back with better health in 2009.

March 6, 2009

Brad Penny is going to have his ailing shoulder examined by Dr. Tom Gill, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:

Terry Francona noted that his visit with Dr. Gill is precautionary, and the skipper is not overly concerned with Penny's shoulder. We will keep you posted on his status.

March 3, 2009

Brad Penny has been pushed back, according to MLB.com. Penny felt some fatigue in his shoulder on Sunday, and will no longer pitch Thursday against Team Puerto Rico. He will throw off flat ground and focus on strengthening his shoulder for the time being.

Our View:

Penny stated that the current fatigue in his shoulder is not close to the the pain that limited him to only 94.2 innings in 2008. Justin Masterson, Clay Buchholz and Michael Bowden are all capable of filling his spot in the rotation if Penny is not ready to go at the start of the season.

February 28, 2009

Brad Penny is pain-free, according to the Boston Globe. Penny did not experience any pain in his right shoulder Thursday when he threw 40 pitches of live batting practice, which was his most work so far of the spring.

Our View:

Penny is slated to pitch in a game for the first time Thursday, against Puerto Rico's World Baseball Classic club. Barring a setback, he is worth a look as a late-round flier in case he can put his disappointing 2008 campaign behind him.

February 23, 2009

Brad Penny threw his first live batting practice of spring camp today, according to the Providence Journal. He was reportedly throwing at around 75 percent, but received a positive reaction from onlookers. He battled arm issues last season.

Our View:

Penny has been feeling good physically so far, and is worth targeting as a late-round flier in case he can bounce back and put his disappointing 2008 campaign behind him.

February 11, 2009

Red Sox right-hander Brad Penny does not have limitations on his throwing, and feels good physically, reports the Boston Globe.

Our View:

Penny is coming off a tumultuous year in L.A. while he was dealing with shoulder problems. If healthy, he can be of some use to fantasy owners, if his previous success is an indication of what he could possibly accomplish.

January 9, 2009

The AP reports that the contract between Brad Penny and the Red Sox has been finalized. The deal is for one season and $5 million, plus incentives.

Our View:

Penny will be given the chance to start in a rotation with Josh Beckett, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Jon Lester and Tim Wakefield. Last season injuries held him to just 94.2 innings, a 6.27 ERA, and a 6-9 record, though the is a relatively cheap risk for the club to take. The likely addition of John Smoltz means that Boston may have the luxury of using a six-man rotation by mid-season if the club chooses to give their hurlers a break, though it remains to be seen if the team would really go that route.
