Newsbreakers

October 27, 2009

Gary Matthews Jr. is ready to leave the Angels after serving a reduced role in 2009, according to the Los Angeles Times. He said, "I do not expect to be back; it is time to move on. I am ready to play for an organization that wants me to play every day. This organization has other plans, and that is OK."

Our View:

Matthews inked a five-year deal worth $50MM in 2007, but was hindered by a knee injury over the second half of that season. He had surgery on the knee last winter, which led to the club reeling in star Torii Hunter. Matthews has $23MM left on his contract with a no-trade clause that will allow him to block deals to four teams of his choosing.

July 29, 2009

Gary Matthews Jr. went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored, and three RBI in the Angels' 7-6 win over the Indians.

Our View:

Matthews is capable of producing games like this every once in a while, but for the most part he is a disappointing fantasy producer. Don't expect many outings like this for Matthews, as he is currently hitting only .238 this season.

June 28, 2009

Gary Matthews Jr. only had one hit on Sunday, but he managed to drive in three, score a run, and steal home in the Angels' 12-8 win over the D-Backs. Matthews Jr. is hitting .224 on the year.

Our View:

Nice production from Matthews Jr. today, but these days have been few and far-between this season. He should not be owned in any leagues at this point, and don't expect that to change in the near future.

June 9, 2009

Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com reports that the Angels would "love" to trade outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. "for the same type of overpaid, underperforming player."

Our View:

He also reports that the Angels would love to win 20 straight World Series with a $20 million payroll. That may be a joke, but Matthews bloated contract and minimal production are not. From the revelations that he used HGH, to his .247 cumulative average with the Angels, Matthews and his $50 million contract have been a humongous disappointment. Batting only .246 with one home run in 2009, he is also not a viable fantasy option in any format.

May 13, 2009

According to MLBlogs.com, Gary Matthews Jr. was a late scratch for Wednesday's game due to tightness in his lower back.

Our View:

He is considered day-to-day and was replaced in the lineup by Reggie Willits.

May 6, 2009

Gary Matthews Jr. had another nice night on Tuesday as the Angels beat the A's 5-3. Matthews Jr. went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI.

Our View:

Matthews Jr. has really come on since Vlad went down, and he is earning himself some playing time when Vlad comes back. His fantasy value is good right now, but it should decrease upon Vlad's return.

May 1, 2009

Gary Matthews Jr. had three hits on Friday, but the Angels lost to the Yankees 10-9. Matthews was 3-for-4 with a run and four RBI. He is hitting .306 on the season.

Our View:

Matthews has been playing well since his playing time increased due to the injury to Vlad Guerrero. Matthews remains an option in AL-only leagues until Vlad comes back, and he is worth a look in deeper mixed leagues for the time being.

April 16, 2009

Gary Matthews Jr. went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run against Seattle on Thursday.

Our View:

With Vladimir Guerrero sitting out Thursday and remaining out indefinitely while he deals with a sore chest, Juan Rivera moved to DH, opening up right field for Gary Matthews Jr. He could be worth a look in AL-only leagues and deeper mixed leagues as long as Guerrero remains out, though it doesn't seem like Guerrero will be missing more than a week or so.

March 31, 2009

The Angels tried to deal Gary Matthews Jr. to the Reds, but the club was not interested in giving up hurlers Bronson Arroyo or Aaron Harang in exchange, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Our View:

The Angels have a role for Matthews, but not a starting gig that he desires. He should be left for AL-only leagues as of now.

March 24, 2009

Outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. went 2-for-3 with a double, homer, two runs, and two RBI in Tuesday's win over the Padres. He is hitting .412 (7-for-17) this spring.

Our View:

Matthews is doing his best to fight for playing time and increase his trade value. He continues to rank as the team's fifth outfielder, but if he continues to hit like this, Juan Rivera could be pushed.

March 22, 2009

The Angels may be looking to shop outfielder Gary Matthews Jr., according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

Currently the Angels' fifth outfielder, Matthews Jr. is in the middle of his five-year, $50 million contract and would likely drop his no-trade clause to gain more playing time elsewhere.

March 20, 2009

Gary Matthews Jr. drove home two runs with a triple in his only at-bat in Friday's 6-1 win over Arizona.

Our View:

Matthews is looking to recover from a lackluster 2008 season in which his .242 average was lowest since 2003, when he hit .204 in 41 games with Baltimore.

March 18, 2009

Gary Matthews Jr. was 1-for-3 with a home run Wednesday and is batting .444 this spring.

Our View:

Matthews continues to hit despite his injury troubles. He's still not considered a starting outfielder, but his performance this spring could earn him more at-bats.

March 17, 2009

Gary Matthews Jr. was 2-for-3 with three runs driven in on Tuesday against the Pardes. He is hitting .500 this spring.

Our View:

Matthews was slated to miss the first month of the season, but appears to have healed much quicker than expected. He's hitting well this spring and appears healthy enough to start the season, but could lose at-bats due to the signing of Bobby Abreu.

March 3, 2009

Gary Matthews Jr. has been cleared to DH and expects to get a few plate appearances in the Angels intra-squad game on Tuesday, though his weak knee, due to offseason surgery, will still keep him out of the field for the time being, according to the Orange County Register.

Our View:

This still comes as great news for Matthews, who is progressing ahead of schedule and actually may be available to play by the start of the season, something that was not expected when the surgery was originally performed back in late-October. Still, he's no more than late-round AL-only material at best, with the Angels' signing of Bobby Abreu and the presence of Torii Hunter, Vladimir Guerrero and Juan Rivera keeping Matthews from seeing everyday at-bats.
