Newsbreakers

October 5, 2009

The White Sox decided to pick up Freddy Garcia's option for 2010, according to Sports Illustrated. He will earn $1MM in base salary next season, with a possible $2MM in incentives.

Our View:

The 34-year-old hurler went 3-4 with a 4.34 ERA over nine starts, and apparently pleased the Sox enough to bring him back.

September 26, 2009

Freddy Garcia was obliterated by the Tigers on Saturday, as he allowed seven runs on ten hits over 6.1 innings. He took the loss as the Sox got crunched 12-5.

Our View:

Saturday's hiccup snapped a string of six quality starts for Garcia since he joined the White Sox rotation. He had been effective, but saw his ERA jump to 4.78 after taking a beating today.

September 20, 2009

Freddy Garcia allowed just two runs in eight innings on Sunday, but got let down by an anemic Chicago offense, as the Royals won 2-1 on the road.

Our View:

Garcia has been surprisingly effective since joining the Sox rotation in late August, going 2-3 with a 4.01 ERA.

September 16, 2009

Freddy Garcia gave up three earned runs on seven hits over six innings in Tuesday's 6-3 win at Seattle. He had one walk with one strikeout.

Our View:

Garcia had a decent outing on the road, and evened his record to 2-2. He allowed two or less earned runs in each of his previous two starts heading into tonight.

September 9, 2009

Freddy Garcia pitched six innings of two-run ball on Wednesday night, but didn't factor into the decision, as the White Sox would need seven more innings to finally defeat the A's 4-3 at home.

Our View:

Garcia is now 1-2 with a 4.40 ERA in five starts for the White Sox this season. He's not worth a late season flier.

September 4, 2009

Freddy Garcia only surrendered one earned run on seven hits over six innings in Friday's 12-2 win over the Red Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. He had one walk with five strikeouts.

Our View:

Garcia looked good tonight as he collected his first win of 2009. He allowed three or less earned runs in each of his last three starts.

August 30, 2009

Freddy Garcia was hit with the loss on Sunday despite pitching fairly well. Garcia went six innings and allowed three runs on four hits while walking three and striking out five in his team's 8-3 loss to the Yankees.

Our View:

Garcia was actually pretty good today, especially considering he was facing the Yankees in Yankee Stadium. His ERA is at 5.94 after his third start, but he has been decent in his last two outings after getting roughed up in his debut.

August 29, 2009

Freddy Garcia wants a chance to start with the White Sox in 2010, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Garcia looked good in his last start against Boston, and he said, "Hopefully the Sox do want me back. They gave me a shot this year, and maybe I can show them that I am good enough to come back next year. It depends on what they are looking for, but, hey, I am here already, so maybe they will bring me back. This is where I want to be."

Our View:

Jake Peavy, Mark Buehrle, Gavin Floyd and John Danks all under contract until at least after 2011, so the Sox will not have much money to shop for a free agent starting pitcher in the offseason. Minor leaguer Daniel Hudson could be an option for the No. 5 spot next season, or they could retain Garcia on a one-year deal.

August 25, 2009

Freddy Garcia surrendered three earned runs on five hits over 6.1 innings in Tuesday's 6-3 loss at Boston. He had one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View:

The game was tied at 3-3 when Garcia exited, so he takes a no-decision instead of a loss. He was not solid tonight, but at least he fared better than his previous start, when he was tagged for five earned runs over 4.1 innings against Kansas City.

August 18, 2009

Freddy Garcia was tagged for five earned runs on seven hits over 4.1 innings in Tuesday's 5-4 loss to the Royals at U.S. Cellular Field. He had one walk and three strikeouts.

Our View:

Garcia had a favorable match-up, but fantasy owners were not able to cash in with a solid performance from him. He threw 91 pitches in his first start since last September.

August 18, 2009

Freddy Garcia has been recalled by the White Sox from Triple-A Charlotte, according to TSN. DeWayne Wise was placed on the 15-day DL as the corresponding move.

Our View:

Garcia is slated to start tonight's home game against the Royals (46-72). He is making his first start since September 29 (with Detroit), but is worth a look for deeper AL-only leagues with a favorable match-up.

August 15, 2009

Freddy Garcia will make his first major league start since last September this Tuesday for the White Sox, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

As Larry David would tell you, curb your enthusiasm. Unless you are absolutely desperate for pitching, don't bother adding Garcia.

July 27, 2009

Freddy Garcia looked good in his first minor league start on Sunday, according to MLB.com. Garcia went three innings and did not allow a run on two hits and one walk. He also managed to strike out three and induce two double play balls.

Our View:

This is a nice start for Garcia, and the team will look for him to begin to stretch out over his next few starts. If he keeps producing, he could be in the White Sox' rotation by mid-August, but that looks like a best case scenario situation.

July 25, 2009

According to the Chicago Tribune, starting pitcher Freddy Garcia is scheduled to make his first rehab start on Sunday for Single-A Kannapolis. Garcia is trying to return from shoulder injuries that have limited him to 15 innings in the last two years.

Our View:

Garcia is hoping to return to the White Sox within the next few weeks, and this rehab start is the first step in that process. The team hopes he will only need four rehab starts before being able to return, but that will depend on how he responds.

July 23, 2009

The Chicago Tribune reports that pitcher Freddy Garcia threw another strong bullpen session on Thursday and that he will likely begin his rehab assignment on Monday. Pitching coach Don Cooper says that he could use as few as four rehab starts before rejoining the White Sox.

Our View:

Shoulder injuries have limited Garcia to just 14 starts since the start of 2007. He figures to be an average pitcher at best once and if he makes it to the White Sox rotation. Keep an eye on his rehab outings if you have interest in him.

July 20, 2009

Freddy Garcia looked good in a bullpen session on Monday, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

He'll throw another bullpen session on Thursday before being added to a minor league roster. White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper said that Garcia will need at least four or five minor league starts before being ready for the majors, and even then there's no guarantee he'll be added to Chicago's starting rotation.

July 19, 2009

Freddy Garcia is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Monday, then be assigned a location for a minor league rehabilitation stint, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

Garcia said he is feeling good, but it isn't really known when he will be able to pitch for the White Sox, or if they will even want him to when he's ready. Don't add him in any format.

June 24, 2009

According to the Chicago Tribune, Freddy Garcia is still a long way from being ready to pitch.

Our View:

Garcia is trying to build up strength in his pitching shoulder and is believed to be working out somewhere in North Carolina. GM Kenny Williams said, "That's a slow process," Williams said. "We have to build him the right way, the way he was supposed to be built from the beginning." Don't count on seeing Garcia in the near future.

June 8, 2009

Freddy Garcia has inked a minor league deal with the White Sox, according to ESPN.

Our View:

Garcia was released by the Mets back in April following two poor starts with Triple-A Buffalo. He pitched with the Sox from 2004-06, but does not garner fantasy consideration while working on a comeback in the minors.

April 28, 2009

Updating an earlier report, Freddy Garcia has been released by the Mets, according to Newsday.

Our View:

Garcia is dealing with a sore right shoulder, and there is belief that Garcia is still experiencing problems after his rotator-cuff surgery in 2007. He held a poor 8.18 ERA over two starts at Triple-A prior to his release.

April 28, 2009

Freddy Garcia is dealing with a sore right shoulder, according to the Buffalo News. He said, "Maybe I want to try it one more time. If I do not feel the way I am supposed to be feeling right now, I do not know. I am going to try my best. If not, I guess I will go home. That is it, man."

Our View:

The 32-year-old vet holds a 8.18 ERA over two starts at Triple-A, and is not worth stashing on fantasy rosters - especially since it sounds like he is considering hanging up his cleats if his shoulder does not improve soon.

March 24, 2009

Freddy Garcia has been reassigned to minor league camp by the Mets, according to the Star-Ledger.

Our View:

Garcia failed to earn the fifth spot in the Mets' rotation, but could serve as a long-reliever if he makes progress in the minors. The club noted that he still has a ways to go.

March 18, 2009

According to the New York Post, the Mets are likely to release Freddy Garcia. The Mets have plenty of options for their rotation and Garcia's poor spring has left him on the outside looking in.

Our View:

Garcia will likely get picked up by another team if he is indeed released, but still wouldn't command any fantasy value as his best days are behind him.

March 13, 2009

Freddy Garcia was alright against Detroit on Friday, giving up two runs off two hits, one which left the yard, and one walk while striking out one in 2.1 innings.

Our View:

Friday's showing was actually an improvement over Garcia's previous two outings this spring, both of which he got rocked in. He appears to be on the outside looking in in the competition for the Mets' No. 5 starter with Livan Hernandez as the favorite.

March 3, 2009

Freddy Garcia surrendered four earned runs on three hits over two innings of work in Tuesday's 15-4 loss to the Cardinals, with one walk and three strikeouts. He allowed home runs to Chris Duncan and Allen Craig.

Our View:

Garcia falls to 0-2 in the preseason, and is losing ground in his bid for the fifth spot in the Mets' rotation.

February 26, 2009

Freddy Garcia's fastball has reportedly been flat so far in camp and he looks as if he is still recovering from surgery, according to MetsCitiBlog.com.

Our View:

Garcia, Tim Redding, Livan Hernandez and Jon Niese are all fighting for the fifth spot in the Mets' rotation. So far Niese has looked the best in camp, and skipper Jerry Manuel has been pleased with his "stuff."

February 14, 2009

Freddy Garcia expects to be the fifth starter in the Mets' rotation, according to the NY Times. He said, "I expect to be in the rotation. If not, I will have to go somewhere else."

Our View:

Garcia fared well over three starts with the Tigers in 2008 as he held a 1.13 WHIP, and he will have a better supporting cast to succeed with the Mets. Tim Redding also expects to be the fifth starter in the rotation, and this looks to be a tight battle in spring training.

January 27, 2009

The White Sox wanted to bring Freddy Garcia back to Chicago, but felt his price tag ($1.5MM plus $6.5MM in incentives) was too high, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Our View:

Rosenthal believes lefty Oliver Perez would be a more attractive option to upgrade their rotation, but noted that he could have a tough transition from the NL to the AL, and launching pad U.S. Cellular Field, where the club plays their home games.

January 22, 2009

The New York Daily News reports that Freddy Garcia has signed a minor-league deal with the New York Mets. Should Garcia meet all the incentives, the deal could be worth as much as $9 million.

Our View:

Garcia is just 2-6 over the past two seasons and has had numerous injury issues throughout that span. He is apparently fully recovered from shoulder surgery and will be given a shot at the rotation. Keep an eye on his spring training to see if he is worth a draft day gamble.

January 22, 2009

Freddy Garcia has narrowed his choices down to the Mets and Yankees, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:

Garcia has started just 14 games in two seasons, going 2-6 over that span. His fantasy value will be determined once it is clear whether or not he has recovered from shoulder surgery.

January 21, 2009

The Yankees and Mets are both interested in signing Freddy Garcia, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Our View:

Garcia may have to settle for a minor league deal, as both the Mets and Yankees view him as a backup option for their rotations. The Yankees would still like to sign Andy Pettitte and the Mets would like to bring back Oliver Perez.

January 19, 2009

The Daily Herald reports that Freddy Garcia is expected to sign with a team soon. His possible landing spot is believed to be with the White Sox, Mets or Rangers.

Our View:

Garcia has not been a reliable starter since 2005, but the 32-year-old is believed to be mostly healthy. He is regarded as a high-risk, high-reward free agent. Keep an eye on his spring to determine if you want to gamble a bench round selection on him.

January 18, 2009

The New York Daily News reports that free agent Freddy Garcia may be signed to battle with recently signed Tim Redding for the fifth spot in the rotation.

Our View:

From 1999-2005, Garcia had a strong run, but injuries have limited him to just 14 appearances over the last two seasons. He is just 32, and it's possible he has recovered. He is a high-risk, high-reward free agent who is also drawing interest from the White Sox, Rangers, and Tigers, among others.

January 17, 2009

The White Sox are interested in bringing back Freddy Garcia, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Our View:

Garcia held a favorable 1.13 WHIP over 15 innings (three starts) with the Tigers last season, and won 17 games with the White Sox back in 2006. He would compete for the No. 5 spot in the rotation with newly acquired Bartolo Colon in the fourth slot. The Mets and Rangers are also interested in Garcia.

January 9, 2009

The Mets have been talking to free agent hurler Freddy Garcia, according to Sports Illustrated.

Our View:

The club could consider Garcia if they do not reel in Derek Lowe, Oliver Perez or Randy Wolf.
