Vernon Wells underwent surgery on his left wrist today, according to the Associated Press. He is expected to be recovered in time for spring training.

Our View:

Doctors repaired cartilage damage in his wrist sustained while diving to make a catch against the Indians in 2008. His wrist was a main cause for his disappointing 2009 campaign, and Wells will aim to bounce back next year.

November 3, 2009

The Associated Press reports Vernon Wells will undergo surgery next week to repair damaged cartilage in his left wrist. He is expected to be ready for spring training.

Our View:

Can they work on his swing while they are in there? Wells, who will be entering the third year of a seven-year, $126-million contract in 2010, hit just .260 with 15 home runs and 66 RBI last season. His on-base percentage was an abysmal .311. It's going to be a long five years in Toronto for the Blue Jays and Wells.

September 24, 2009

Vernon Wells led the way for the Jays in a losing effort on Thursday. Wells went 2-for-4 with a home run, a run scored, and all four of his team's RBI in their 5-4 loss to the Mariners.

Our View:

Wells has largely been a disappointment this season, but he still has the ability to put together nights like this. His fantasy value has taken a huge hit, and he will have to prove he can still hit consistently before he returns to his previous fantasy value.

September 11, 2009

Vernon Wells helped carry the Jays in tonight's 6-4 win at Detroit, as he went 2-for-3 with two RBI. He hit a single and a double.

Our View:

Wells has two hits in two of his last three games, and ended a three-game skid without any RBI.

August 21, 2009

Vernon Wells homered, doubled and drove in two Friday night as the Jays topped the Angels 5-4.

Our View:

Wells has taken a lot of heat this season for not performing up to the standards set by his monster contract. He's hitting just .257 with 13 homers, so hopefully you didn't overpay for him like Toronto did.

August 19, 2009

Vernon Wells went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, and collected the Jays' lone RBI in tonight's 6-1 loss to Boston at the Rogers Centre.

Our View:

Wells is riding a six-game hitting streak, and racked up 10 RBI over 15 games this month. Keep him active in fantasy leagues while hot.

August 9, 2009

Embattled outfielder Vernon Wells had one of his better games of the season on Sunday, going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI, as Roy Halladay and the Blue Jays beat Baltimore 7-3.

Our View:

Wells now has 12 home runs on the season. For those of you keeping count at home, that's $1.5 million per home run.

August 7, 2009

Vernon Wells was productive in tonight's 7-5 loss to the Orioles at the Rogers Centre, as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. He hit a single and a solo homer off Jason Berken.

Our View:

Wells is riding a five-game hitting streak with five RBI over the span. Keep him active in fantasy lineups while hot.

August 4, 2009

Vernon Wells was productive in tonight's 5-3 loss to the Yankees at the Rogers Centre, as he went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

Our View:

Wells has a hit in three straight games, and ended a 10-game drought without recording an RBI.

July 21, 2009

Updating a previous report, Blue Jays' outfielder Vernon Wells will be in the team's lineup Tuesday night. Wells has missed the last three games with a stomach ailment.

Our View:

Wells is feeling better, and he is hitting third in tonight's lineup. Anyone relying on Wells should get him back in the lineup, but if you have another option it would probably best to go with that.

July 21, 2009

MLB.com is reporting that Blue Jays' outfielder Vernon Wells hopes to return to the lineup on Tuesday after missing the last three games due to the flu. Wells is hitting .263 on the season for Toronto.

Our View:

With the day off yesterday, Wells should be good to go tonight against the Indians. With reigning Cy Young winner Cliff Lee on the mound, Wells figures to be a bad fantasy play, so you may want to keep him on the bench for one more night.

July 18, 2009

Vernon Wells sat out his second straight game with the flu on Saturday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

If you are one of the poor souls who owns him, it would probably be best to keep him out of your lineup on Sunday if you have a reserve OF to start in his place.

July 17, 2009

According to the Twitter page of Blue Jays' beat writer Jordan Bastian, outfielder Vernon Wells is not in the team's lineup for Friday night's game against the Red Sox due to a case of the stomach flu.

Our View:

The flu can be tricky, so Wells should be considered questionable for the rest of the weekend. We will keep you updated on his status, so check back to see if he is able to play tomorrow.

July 6, 2009

Vernon Wells had his first three hit game since June 18 on Monday, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored, as the Jays beat the Yankees 7-6 in New York.

Our View:

Wells' 2009 has been a colossal failure to this point, but for what it's worth, he has hit in six of his last seven games, and could be due to hit even more. Still, he's become just another outfielder in fantasy terms, and is worth little more than riding for hot streaks (if he goes on any) at this point.

July 3, 2009

Vernon Wells was moved down to sixth in the order on Friday, and it seemed to work as he went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, a run scored, and an RBI. He now has eight homers on the season.

Our View:

Wells has been struggling mightily this season, but maybe the move in the order will spark him. His fantasy value is very iffy right now, so monitor his performance to determine whether or not he should be in your lineup. For now, it would be best if you had another option.

July 1, 2009

According to the Toronto Star, Vernon Wells has been given the day off on Wednesday to "clear his head a bit".

Our View:

Wells is just two for his last 16 and has been hampered by nagging hamstring woes since spring training. He's hitting just .248 on the season, more than 30 points below his career average. Let's just call this what it is: a slumping player getting benched because fo poor production.

June 30, 2009

Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com says there is "virtually no chance" the Blue Jays could trade Vernon Wells and his gargantuan contract, which has $98 million remaining on it through 2014.

Our View:

The Jays would love to jettison Wells and his unsightly deal, but especially with the current economic climate, it just isn't happening. Since signing his longterm contract before the 2007 season, he has just 43 home runs and is batting only .263.

June 20, 2009

Vernon Wells has been hot over the past few games, and he continued it on Saturday in the Blue Jays' 5-3 extra innings loss to the Nationals. Wells went 1-for-5 with a home run, a run scored, and an RBI in the game.

Our View:

Wells has been terrible for most of June, but he has turned it around a bit over the last few days. Fantasy owners shouldn't give up on him yet, as it looks like he may be on the verge of turning it around.

June 18, 2009

Vernon Wells went 3-for-6 with a pair of RBI in Thursday's 8-7 win at Philadelphia. Wells hit a double and two singles.

Our View:

Wells has six hits over his last three games, and is starting to swing the stick better following a terrible start in June. He holds an anemic .172 batting average in the month.

May 25, 2009

Vernon Wells went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Monday's 4-1 loss at Baltimore. Both of his knocks were singles.

Our View:

The Jays had nine hits in the game, and Wells registered their lone RBI. He has two hits in back-to-back games. and snapped a 17-game drought without an RBI.

May 4, 2009

Vernon Wells was 2-for-6 with two RBI on Monday, but the Jays lost to Cleveland 9-7 in 12 innings. Wells is hitting .288 on the year.

Our View:

Wells has has a nice start to the season, and he looks to be a quality fantasy contributor if he stays healthy. Keep Wells in your lineup unless he manages to get hurt again.

May 2, 2009

Outfielder Vernon Wells went 2-for-5 with a double and a run on Saturday against the Orioles. he is up to 21 runs over 26 games.

Our View:

Wells hasn't scored 100 runs since 2003, so it's a bit surprising to see him crossing the plate so much this season. Having Adam Lind behind him has helped tremendously.

April 24, 2009

Vernon Wells had a huge night at the plate on Friday, going 3-for-5 with a double, triple, two runs, two RBI, and a stolen base in the Blue Jays' 14-0 thrashing of the White Sox.

Our View:

Wells is having a nice start to 2009, as his average is up to .280. He is scoring runs, stealing bases, and driving runs in. Wells is returning to being a quality fantasy outfielder in all formats.

April 12, 2009

Vernon Wells hit his first home run of the season in Toronto's 8-4 loss to Cleveland on Sunday. He finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Our View:

Wells is hitting cleanup for the Jays and there should be plenty of RBI opportunities coming his way this season. However, he had just one in his first six games despite hitting .292. Look for better production in the power categories going forward.

April 7, 2009

Skipper Cito Gaston indicated that Vernon Wells will not be given extra rest over the first month of the season, according to MLB.com. He was nursing a strained hamstring in spring training, but Gaston said, "Vernon is going to have to go out and just play hard. If he comes up hurt, there is nothing we can do about that. I think that is the only way he knows how to go about it. When you go out and try to guard yourself from getting hurt, most of the time you do get hurt."

Our View:

Wells went 2-for-4 in Monday's season opener, and should remain in fantasy lineups as long as he stays healthy.

April 1, 2009

Vernon Wells was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI as the Blue Jays prevailed over the Nationals 7-6 on Wednesday.

Our View:

Wells looks like he will be ready to handle the everyday duties of centerfield by opening day. He has missed a few weeks this spring due to a hamstring injury, but that appears to be behind him. His injury-prone label has not fallen as far behind him.

March 24, 2009

Outfielder Vernon Wells went 2-for-2 with a double, one run, one RBI, and a stolen base in Tuesday's spring loss to the Phillies.

Our View:

Wells is still rounding into shape as he comes off a hamstring injury, and it's good to see him stretch a double and steal third base. We feel a little better about his fantasy status with each passing day.

March 19, 2009

TSN reports that Vernon Wells (hamstring) is expected to DH on Firday. He played in an intrasquad game at the Blue Jays' minor league camp on Wednesday of this week.

Our View:

Wells missed time last season with this same injury. Be sure to keep in mind the lingering possibilities related to hamstring injuries when considering Wells against another outfielder. He is a good player when healthy, but 500 at-bats should be considered a successful season for Wells in 2009.

March 19, 2009

Vernon Wells, who is still recovering from a strained hamstring, played in an intrasquad game at minor-league camp Wednesday, according to the Toronto Star.

Our View:

Wells appears to remain on pace to be ready to go for opening day. He could slip in drafts due to his recent track record with ailments.

March 11, 2009

MLB.com reports that Vernon Wells (hamstring) took part in some running drills on Wednesday and reportedly felt good afterwards. He could begin playing games in a week.

Our View:

Wells was expected to be out longer than this, and it seems unlikely the Blue Jays will rush him back. Still, he should be ready for opening day and barring injuries, could produce a nice string of numbers in 2009.

March 8, 2009

Skipper Cito Gaston indicated that Vernon Wells will likely begin participating in games in around 10 days, according to MLB.com. He is recovering from a strained hamstring.

Our View:

Wells is still capable of solid production, but his recent track record with injuries make him a risky fantasy prospect.

February 24, 2009

Blue Jays center fielder Vernon Wells will miss two weeks with a strained left hamstring, according to ESPN.com.

Our View:

It was initially thought that Wells would miss four weeks, which would have essentially wiped out his spring training, so this is good news.

February 23, 2009

Vernon Wells suffered a strained hamstring Monday, according to MLB.com. GM J.P. Ricciardi said, "Right now, preliminarily, I would say he is going to miss four weeks."

Our View:

Wells could be fine by opening day, and should still be drafted as a top-35 fantasy outfielder.

February 20, 2009

Vernon Wells will not be participating in the World Baseball Classic, according to the Associated Press. Insurance costs got in the way of him not playing, and skipper Cito Gaston was in favor him of him participating. Gaston said, "I was hoping he would go, too, because I know he really wanted to go. He expressed that to me last year, especially because he feels like it got him off to a great start. It is too bad he is not going. I could see where that would get him off to a good start."

Our View:

If Wells can stay healthy, he could bounce back with a strong campaign with the Jays. As of now, he should be drafted as a top-35 fantasy outfielder.

February 18, 2009

Vernon Wells was committed to getting into shape in the off-season and he is hoping the work pays off in 2009, according to the Associated Press. He said, "My body is in a better place than it ever has been. It will allow everything else to fall into place. I think that was a big issue early on. I did not want to lose weight because you think if you lose weight you lose power. But I have gotten stronger at the same time. So it is probably weight that I could afford to lose." He has already hit a few homers at the training complex in batting practice, without even trying that hard.

Our View:

Wells battled injuries that spoiled his 2008 campaign, but he could bounce back with a strong season if he can stay healthy.
