Newsbreakers

July 27, 2010

Bruce Chen was chased for six runs on 11 hits through only 5.1 innings as the Royals were smacked by the Twins 11-2.

Our View:

Chen walked at least three batters for the fifth time in his past 10 starts, and he's given up four or more runs four times over the same span. He now has a 4.83 ERA with a 1.49 WHIP this year.

July 22, 2010

Bruce Chen was chased for five runs and nine hits through six innings as the Royals dropped a 10-4 laugher to the Yankees.

Our View:

Chen's ERA has risen with each of his past four starts and now stands at 4.38. He's given up 12 earned in his past 15 innings after allowing only eight in his previous 24 on the mound. Cleary, he's heading in the wrong direction after a solid stretch to end June.

June 21, 2010

Bruce Chen was surprisingly effective again on Monday evening, holding the Nationals to three hits and two runs in six innings of work, but took the loss, as Kansas City could get nothing going offensively in its 2-1 loss. He struck out three and walked four.

Our View:

He now owns a 3.96 ERA and 1.43 WHIP through 36.1 innings pitched. You could do worse in AL-only leagues.

June 10, 2010

Bruce Chen gave up five runs off 10 hits and one walk with seven strikeouts against the Twins on Thursday.

Our View:

Chen was far from sharp, though he was still good enough to draw the win. He's now 3-0 on the season and will continue to start until Gil Meche comes back from the DL. While we'd still caution against him, AL-only owners probably could do worse next week with his start coming at home against Houston.

May 29, 2010

Bruce Chen has taken the injured Gil Meche's spot in Kansas City's rotation.

Our View:

In 9.1 innings out of the Royals bullpen this season, he has posted a 2.89 ERA and 1.61 WHIP. He should only be considered for an add in extremely deep AL-only leagues.

April 23, 2010

Bruce Chen has been called up from Triple-A Omaha.

Our View:

In 62.1 major league innings last season, Chen posted a 5.78 ERA. Translation, he won't cure what ails Kansas City's horrendous bullpen.
