December 7, 2009

Two Mets officials have stated that there is nothing to back a recent PhillyBlurbs.com account that Pat Burrell had been dealt to the Mets, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman.

Our View:

No big surprise here. Burrell was rumored to be involved in a three-way deal that included the Mets' Luis Castillo and the Cubs' Milton Bradley, and while it still may eventually happen, it looks like the teams are still simply in discussions with nothing having been completed.

December 7, 2009

Pat Burrell has apparently been dealt from the Rays to the Mets in a three-way deal involving the Cubs, according to PhillyBurbs.com. Keep in mind that no other media outlet has reported the deal just yet, making it far from officially done.

Our View:

Assuming the deal went as had been discussed the past few days, Milton Bradley will end up in Tampa Bay, with Luis Castillo in Chicago. All three players are fantasy relevant and will likely get drafted toward the back end of drafts next season. You never know exactly how a new home will help or hurt a players' production, but in Burrell's case, a return to the National League could give him some renewed value, even in the Mets' pitcher-friendly park.

December 2, 2009

Joel Sherman of the New York Post believes a trade of Pat Burrell for Milton Bradley is a strong possibility.

Our View:

Burrell is owed $9MM over one year and Bradley is due $21MM over two, so the Cubs would have to eat a chunk of his salary to make a swap to the Rays work. Burrell could potentially be a nice power option for 2010 if given a chance to play his home games at Wrigley Field, and back in the NL.

September 23, 2009

Pat Burrell is not in the starting lineup for the Rays on Wednesday. Jason Bartlett will serve as the DH, while Reid Brignac will play at shortstop.

Our View:

Burrell hasn't had a great first season in Tampa, as he only has 14 homers on the year. He looks to be closer to the end than the beginning, and his best days may be behind him.

September 15, 2009

Pat Burrell went 2-for-4 with four RBI in Tuesday's 10-5 loss at Baltimore. He hit a single and a three-run homer off Jason Berken.

Our View:

Burrell ended an 11-game skid without a homer, and has 14 for 2009. He only had one hit over his previous eight games as well (22 at-bats).

August 23, 2009

Pat Burrell went 2-for-3 on Sunday, but couldn't help the Rays past the Rangers, as Tampa lost 4-0 at home.

Our View:

Burrell, batting just .235 this season, has been a major bust in Tampa, and doesn't hold any value in mixed leagues.

August 19, 2009

Pat Burrell went 2-for-4 with a single and a solo homer off Chris Tillman in tonight's 3-1 win over the Orioles at Tropicana Field.

Our View:

Burrell is enjoying a power surge, as he generated a homer in three of his last four games. He now has 12 homers for 2009, and may seemingly be a nice source for power down the stretch, assuming he can stay healthy.

August 15, 2009

Pat Burrell could be ready to return to the Rays' lineup by Tuesday, according to Marc Lancaster's twitter page. He is recovering from a neck ailment.

Our View:

This is encouraging, but hopefully the injury won't linger down the stretch for Burrell. His move to the AL has not gone very well this season, as he holds a .220 batting average with only 10 homers over 82 games though.

August 15, 2009

Pat Burrell was forced to leave the team's game on Friday after his neck injury from earlier this season flared up and will not play on Saturday, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:

There has been no update on his condition as of yet, but expect him to be out of the lineup for at least a few days.

August 5, 2009

According to the St. Petersburg Times, Pat Burrell will return to the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays.

Our View:

Burrell sat the last two games in favor of Willy Aybar, but the Rays decided to go with Pat the Bat to face lefty David Price. Adjust your lineups accordingly, assuming anyone out there still owns Burrell and his .225 average.

July 22, 2009

Pat Burrell went 2-for-4 with a single and a solo homer off Carlos Torres in tonight's 4-3 loss at Chicago.

Our View:

Burrell has three homers so far in July, after only blasting two in June. He has 11 RBI this month as well, and hopefully he can have a strong second half for fantasy owners.

July 12, 2009

Pat Burrell ripped a pair of doubles and plated two runs in the Rays' 7-3 loss to the A's on Sunday. He finished the day 2-for-4.

Our View:

Burrell has been a colossal disappointment since landing in Tampa. He's hitting just .232 with four homers and 28 RBI, and is better served riding the pine in fantasy leagues.

July 7, 2009

Pat Burrell carried the Rays offensively in tonight's 3-1 win over Toronto at Tropicana Field, as he went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer off Brandon League in the bottom of the 11th inning.

Our View:

Burrell hit his first homer of July, and his fourth of the season. Hopefully he will generate better power this month, after only launching two homers in June.

June 24, 2009

Pat Burrell led the Rays offensively in Wednesday's 7-1 win over the Phillies at Tropicana Field, as he went 1-for-4 with three RBI. He hit a single and a two-run homer off Joe Blanton.

Our View:

Burrell was in need of a solid outing, as he was hitting .150 over 20 at-bats heading into tonight's game. He hit his first homer since April 13.

June 20, 2009

According to the St. Petersburg Times, Rays' skipper Joe Maddon says he won't start Pat Burrell in right field Saturday despite solid numbers against Johan Santana.

Our View:

Pat the Bat is 5-for-16 against the Mets' ace, but it seems he won't get a chance to hit him Saturday. Maddon has been reluctant to play the struggling outfielder, especially in games without a DH. Burrell has been a big disappointment this season, not just to the Rays, but fantasy owners as well. He's hitting just .236 with one home run in 123 at-bats. There are definitely better options out there.

June 17, 2009

According to the St. Petersburg Times, manager Joe Maddon will likely start Pat Burrell in rightfield for Wednesday's game.

Our View:

Maddon previously said he wouldn't do this, but Burrell is 11-for-16 in his career against tonight's starter Aaron Cook. If you have Burrell on your roster, tonight is a great time to start him.

June 12, 2009

Updating a previous report, the Rays have activated DH Pat Burrell from the disabled list and have optioned outfielder Matt Joyce in a corresponding move, according to the Tampa Tribune. Burrell has been on the DL for a month with a neck strain.

Our View:

Burrell is expected to be in the lineup for each of the next three games before being relegated to a bench role when the team travels to a National League park on Tuesday. Burrell has struggled for the Rays this season, and he was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in his last rehab start, so he is probably not a strong play at this point.

June 11, 2009

Pat Burrell is set to return to the diamond for Friday's home game against the Nationals following his recovery from a neck strain, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

He will serve as a pinch-hitter upon his return, and won't be cleared to roam the outfield during a stretch of six interleague battles though. Burrell is slated to work as a DH in Thursday's rehab game with Single-A Charlotte.

June 10, 2009

Pat Burrell (neck) took batting practice with the Rays on Wednesday afternoon. He tells the Tampa Tribune that his timing is still off despite playing in two Double-A rehab games. Burrell will play for High-A Charlotte on Thursday and then be re-evaluated.

Our View:

It sounds like Burrell could be back at some point this weekend, and fantasy owners who want to use him can tentatively plan on him being available next week.

June 8, 2009

Pat Burrell was sent to Double-A Montgomery to start his rehab assignment, according to TSN. He has been recovering from a strained neck.

Our View:

Barring a setback, Burrell could return to Tampa Bay before the end of the week. He is expected to play in three or four rehab games.

June 6, 2009

According to the St. Petersburg Times, Pat Burrell, recovering from a strained neck, is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment on Monday

Our View:

Burrell, who's been out since May 10th, will play three or four games in the minors and, barring any setbacks, would return to the team at the end of next week.

June 2, 2009

Pat Burrell is feeling better while recovering from neck stiffness, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:

He has an improved range of motion, and will partake in more hitting this week, from working off a tee in a cage and advancing from there. Manager Joe Maddon noted that he may need a rehab assignment since he has not played since May 10.

May 30, 2009

The St. Petersburg Times reports that the Rays still do not have a timetable on Pat Burrell's rehab from a strained neck. He was eligible to return earlier this week and has not played since May 10.

Our View:

Burrell has not put up the production expected of him when he was signed as a free agent this offseason. He should eventually return and have a positive fantasy impact, but for now he belongs on the bench or even the waiver wire.

May 26, 2009

Pat Burrell was scheduled to come off the DL on Tuesday, but his return has been pushed back until at least this weekend, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Burrell has been dealing with a neck strain.

Our View:

Burrell has been dealing with this neck injury for quite a bit longer than expected, and it looks like it is still bothering him. The Rays want to wait until he is completely healthy to bring him back, so don't expect to see him until this weekend.

May 17, 2009

MLB.com reports that Pat Burrell was placed on the 15-day DL retroactive to May 12 with a neck strain. Jason Isringhausen was called up from Triple-A to take his roster spot.

Our View:

Burrell has already missed five days, so he could return at some point next week. The rest should be enough to get him back to 100 percent and the Rays will expect better production from him once he is back in the lineup.

May 17, 2009

Pat Burrell will be re-evaluated Sunday while nursing a neck ailment, according to the Associated Press. He received a cortisone shot Friday.

Our View:

Burrell should draw back into the Rays' lineup at some point next week, but should remain held out of fantasy lineups for now.

May 14, 2009

The Tampa Tribune is reporting that Pat Burrell will get an injection in his neck on Friday and will miss the next two games.

Our View:

Burrell has been struggling so far in Tampa, and his injury problems haven't helped. He should avoid the DL, but his fantasy value is nonexistent at this point. If he does start hitting at some point this season, he could be worth a pickup because when he gets hot he gets really hot.

May 13, 2009

Pat Burrell is out of the Rays' lineup for the second straight game Wednesday, according to the St. Petersburg Times. He is nursing a stiff neck.

Our View:

The Rays did not speculate when Burrell may return to action. He only has one homer so far with his new team, and his power has been affected by no longer playing his home games at launching pad Citizens Bank Park.

May 12, 2009

Pat Burrell is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game due to a stiff neck, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:

This has been an ongoing issue with Burrell and could explain his slow start to the season. He's considered day-to-day and doesn't seem DL bound, but the neck has good days and bad days.

May 4, 2009

Willy Aybar is starting at DH on Monday in place of Pat Burrell, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Burrell is still sore from taking a pitch to the ribs on Sunday.

Our View:

Burrell is simply getting the day off and it is not expected that he lands on the DL. Expect him back sooner rather than later.

April 28, 2009

Pat Burrell was held out of Tuesday's lineup due to a sore neck, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:

This doesn't sound serious as Burrell is still available for pinch-hitting duties tonight and should be in the lineup on Wednesday.

April 13, 2009

Pat Burrell went 2-for-5 with his first home run, three runs scored, two RBI, and a walk as the Rays crushed the Yankees 15-5 on Monday. It was his first game in his new home ballpark.

Our View:

Burrell had just four hits through his first 20 at bats, but got it going tonight in Tampa. He seems to be locked into the fifth spot in the Rays' order and should be in line for another productive season.

April 4, 2009

Pat Burrell was the first hitter of the game in Tampa Bay and Philadelphia's final spring game on Saturday. He hit a solo home run off of Cole Hamels and then was replaced by Ben Zobrist on defense.

Our View:

This had to feel good for the former Phil who was let go this offseason. He will be a full-time DH this season for the AL Champs.

March 25, 2009

Pat Burrell had an off day, going 0-for-3 on Wednesday for the Rays in their 4-2 win over the Pirates.

Our View:

Burrell has been playing mostly DH this spring and that is where most of his fantasy value will be coming from this year. Chalk this one up to a bad day because he is hitting well over .300 this spring. The question is will his power numbers continue in a new ballpark and a new league in 2009.

March 19, 2009

Pat Burrell was 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI, and a run scored in the Rays 9-7 loss to the Cardinals on Thursday.

Our View:

Burrell has played mostly at DH this spring, which is where he will serve the majority of his time in 2009. He is hitting .379 with two home runs and 12 RBI this spring. His new ballpark and divisional pitching could dampen the quality numbers that he put up a season ago in Philadelphia.

March 10, 2009

Pat Burrell went 1-for-1 with a home run, two walks, and four RBI in Tuesday's win over Toronto.

Our View:

Burrell more than doubled his spring RBI total with a strong game on Tuesday. He will be the primary DH for the Rays and should remain a good option in the power categories this year.

March 9, 2009

Pat Burrell went 1-for-3 with an RBI single in Monday's 4-3 loss to Minnesota.

Our View:

He collected his third RBI of the preseason. Burrell is expected to serve primarily in the DH role, and should remain a solid source for power with his new club.

February 28, 2009

Pat Burrell went 1-for-2 against his former club while stranding one runner in a 12-5 loss to the Phillies.

Our View:

Burrell's hitting .300 so far this spring. If he can keep it up until real games begin, it would be quite an improvement over his .250 average from a season ago.

February 16, 2009

Pat Burrell is settling in for his new role as the Rays' primary DH, according to the Tampa Tribune. He plans to ask for advice from other designated hitters, including friend Jim Thome.

Our View:

Burrell won his first World Series ring last season while the Phillies defeated the Rays. Now he will be looking to win a championship with the other side. Burrell will be in position to enjoy another solid fantasy season while surrounded by a strong supporting cast.

January 6, 2009

Cincinnati Reds GM Walt Jocketty told MLB.com that Pat Burrell accepted "half of what he was looking for" when he signed with the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, according to Fox Sports.com.

Our View:

The Phillies offered Burrell a two-year, $21 million deal at the midway point of the 2008 season. However, before the economic downturn tightened many teams' wallets, Burrell, a potential MVP candidate, was assured of making more than what Philadelphia had offered. As it turns out, Burrell signed with Tampa Bay for $5 million less to play a lesser role in the AL, presumably as a DH.

January 5, 2009

Updating an earlier report, ESPN.com has confirmed that the Tampa Bay Rays and free-agent outfielder Pat Burrell have agreed in principle to a two-year deal worth $16 million. Early projections have Burrell batting sixth, behind Carlos Pena, in the Rays' lineup as a designated hitter. Burrell's left field position is occupied by long-time Rays player Carl Crawford.

Our View:

Burrell's deal is pending a physical. Burrell's signing means the Tampa Bay lineup will feature yet another presence in the middle, adding to the power supplied by Pena, B.J. Upton, and Evan Longoria

January 5, 2009

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.com, citing major-league sources, reports that the Tampa Bay Rays are close to agreeing with free-agent outfielder Pat Burrell on a deal worth $16 million over two years.

Our View:

Burrell clubbed 33 home runs a season ago for the world champion Phillies and will take his power bat to a club that could use another thumper in the middle of the order.
