Newsbreakers

October 3, 2009

Newsday's David Lennon reports that Carlos Beltran is not in the Mets lineup on Saturday.

Our View:

It's supposedly just a precaution, though he was a late scratch. Since coming off of the disabled list early last month, Beltran has hit .286 in 18 games.

September 28, 2009

The New York Post is reporting that Mets' outfielder Carlos Beltran wants to finish his career with the team. Beltran believes he can play at least six more seasons, and he wants to play them out in New York with the Mets.

Our View:

Beltran is looking for a contract extension, as his current deal expires after the 2011 season. He has shown plenty of heart this year, coming back from a serious knee injury to contribute to the team, so expect his agent, Scott Boras, to be in talks with the team after the season is out.

September 23, 2009

Carlos Beltran went 2-for-4 on Wednesday, but couldn't drive in any runs, as the Mets lost 5-2 to Atlanta at home.

Our View:

In 12 games since coming off the disabled list earlier this month, Beltran is batting .325 with a home run and five RBI - very encouraging news for a team who thought his career might be in jeopardy earlier this season.

September 20, 2009

Carlos Beltran went 2-for-4 with an RBI on Sunday, helping pace the Mets to a 6-2 win over the Nats.

Our View:

Beltran now has five RBI in nine games since returning from the disabled list. With a .337 average in 71 games this season, he's still a good option for 2010.

September 18, 2009

Carlos Beltran was productive in tonight's 6-5 loss to Washington at Citi Field, as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Both of his knocks were singles.

Our View:

Beltran has two hits in each of his last two games, and is hitting .321 over 28 at-bats this month. He snapped a four-game skid without an RBI tonight as well.

September 12, 2009

Carlos Beltran will return to the Mets' lineup on Saturday. Beltran is hitting fourth and playing center field for the team's game against the Phillies.

Our View:

Beltran has missed two straight games, but he is ready to go today. He was out last night because of the wet conditions, so consider him healthy and good to go today.

September 11, 2009

Carlos Beltran is not in the Mets lineup versus the Phillies on Friday, according to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post.

Our View:

Beltran was supposed to play all three days this weekend (though not both doubleheader games on Sunday), but it has been raining much of the day in Philadelphia and the team likely doesn't want to risk him re-injuring his tender knee on a wet field. Weather cooperating, he will start on Saturday.

September 11, 2009

Carlos Beltran will likely play in three of the Mets' four games this weekend, according to the New York Post.

Our View:

He's going to receive regular days of for the rest of the season as he returns from his knee injury, but the team is going to see if he can play three of four games against the Phillies this weekend. Ideally, he would have sat out Sunday, but with the team playing a doubleheader, they want to try and stretch him out. Since returning on Tuesday he is 2-for-8.

September 10, 2009

Carlos Beltran will not be in the Mets' lineup for their game Thursday against the Marlins, according to MLB.com. Manager Jerry Manuel wants to get Beltran a rest at least once a series.

Our View:

Manuel said that this is almost like Spring Training for Beltran, and he doesn't want to push the outfielder too fast. Beltran should play the rest of the way, but be prepared for him to sit a few times a week if you are using him in your outfield.

September 9, 2009

In his second game back in the lineup since being on the disabled list since June 21, Carlos Beltran went 1-for-4 with a run scored on Wednesday.

Our View:

He is now 2-for-8 since being activated. Don't expect big things down the stretch.

September 8, 2009

Carlos Beltran is set to rejoin the Mets on Tuesday after finishing his rehab assignment, according to the New York Daily News. Beltran has been on the DL since June 21 with a bone bruise on his right knee.

Our View:

It is too little, too late for the Mets at this point, but it has to be nice just to have a guy like Beltran back and playing. He made it through his rehab assignment just fine, and if you need some outfield help it might be worth giving him a chance.

September 5, 2009

If Carlos Beltran (knee) can get through two full games for Single-A Brooklyn this weekend, he will be activated from the disabled list and join the Mets this Tuesday, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:

The Mets playoff hopes are alive after all! All kidding aside, it would be nice for the team to know if Beltran is 100 percent healthy heading into 2010.

September 2, 2009

According to Metsblog.com, Carlos Beltran went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI in his first rehab game for the Single-A Brooklyn Cyclones.

Our View:

This bodes well for Beltran and his comeback hopes. He insists he'll return this season and wants to play for "peace of mind" since the Mets are clearly out of the race. He is slated to start in the field in tomorrow's game and play five innings.

September 2, 2009

Carlos Beltran wants to play again this season for "peace of mind," according to the Newark Star-Ledger.

Our View:

Beltran is beginning a rehab assignment Wednesday night at Single-A Brooklyn and will rejoin the Amazins next week barring a setback. With the mysterious and lingering nature of his knee injury, and the fact that the Mets are sitting 18.5 games out of first place, it truly does make little sense for him to come back in 2009. Team doctors have said that Beltran will not be risking further injury by returning, however, and this looks like a way for the team to begin the healing process from its disastrous season a little early.

August 31, 2009

Updating an earlier report, Carlos Beltran (bone bruise) has been given the green light to begin a minor league rehab assignment, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

Team medical director Dr. David Altchek cleared him to shed his knee brace, and Beltran will play with Single-A Brooklyn Wednesday. The elite outfielder could return to the Mets in 7-10 days, barring a setback.

August 31, 2009

Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman is reporting on his Twitter page that Mets' outfielder Carlos Beltran could return in 7-to-10 days. Beltran has been on the DL since June 22 with a bone bruise on his right knee.

Our View:

Beltran returning to the Mets' lineup isn't nearly enough to get them back in the race, but it would be some good news in a season that was filled with disappointment. If Beltran is close to fully healthy when he comes back, he could be an excellent addition to a fantasy team for the playoffs. It is unclear how he will respond when he does get back on the field, however, and it would be smart to limit your expectations of him.

August 24, 2009

According to the New York Daily News, Mets' outfielder Carlos Beltran said his knee has been pain-free for about two weeks, but he has not been cleared to run the bases. Beltran insisted that he plans to return to the lineup before this season is over.

Our View:

Unfortunately for Beltran, running the bases is a prerequisite for beginning a rehab assignment, so his comeback won't be able to advance until he gets that clearance. He wants to play again this year, but with the Mets spiraling toward the bottom of the division, they surely won't rush to get him back out there. If he does contribute again this season, it likely won't be for another several weeks.

August 19, 2009

Carlos Beltran ran in the outfield and took batting practice wth his Mets' teammates on Wednesday, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:

Beltran is closing in on a rehab assignment, and he has made some major strides in his recovery over the last week or so. It looks like he should return in late August or early September, so those of you who have been stashing him should be ready to activate him in the next few weeks.

August 15, 2009

Carlos Beltran deemed himself fit to take the next step in his recovery from his knee injury, according to the Associated Press. He said, "Today was very good day for me. I did not feel anything in everything I did."

Our View:

The elite outfielder is hopeful of running in a straight line early next week, then advance to running the bases before going on a short minor league rehab assignment. Beltran is uncertain exactly when he may return to the Mets, but it could be before the end of August.

August 14, 2009

The New York Post reports that Mets manager Jerry Manuel is "very optimistic" Carlos Beltran (knee) will return to the field in 2009.

Our View:

Ohh. He still plays? Obviously a joke, but the silence on Beltran in recent weeks has been deafening. He's been dealing with a lingering bone bruise on his rigth knee, but will go through a series of tests on Saturday. If they go well, he could be back very shortly.

August 3, 2009

Carlos Beltran fielded 30-35 fly balls Monday at Citi Field, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

He experienced pain in his bruised right knee, and admitted that his knee needs to improve before he would feel comfortable roaming the outfield. The elite center fielder is feeling better though, and remains hopeful of returning to action in around two weeks.

August 1, 2009

Carlos Beltran took batting practice Saturday and did not experience any discomfort, according to the Star Ledger. He has been on the DL since June 22 with a right knee injury.

Our View:

Skipper Jerry Manuel is optimistic that Beltran could be around two weeks from returning to New York. The elite outfielder shall remain stashed on fantasy rosters.

July 30, 2009

Carlos Beltran could miss most, if not all, of the 2010 campaign if he opts for microfracture surgery on his ailing right knee, according to Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus.

Our View:

The surgery is the worst-case scenario, and the elite outfielder is still hoping to return to the Mets at some point in mid-August. He is boosting the pace of his rehab, and shall remain stashed on fantasy rosters.

July 24, 2009

Carlos Beltran will have his ailing right knee re-examined within the next few days, according to MetsBlog.com.

Our View:

Surgery remains an option for the star outfielder. He may not return to New York until August.

July 16, 2009

Carlos Beltran's bone bruise on his right knee has not yet shrunk enough for him to resume full baseball activity yet, according to Newsday.

Our View:

Beltran is apparently a very slow healer. An MVP candidate before he went down, it is still unclear just when the Mets slugger will be back. The best guess appears to be before the end of the season. Keep him stashed, and hope for a breakthrough. Stay tuned.

July 7, 2009

According to the Twitter page of Mets' writer David Lennon, New York outfielder Carlos Beltran has not resumed baseball activity yet. He will be reevaluated at the All-Star break, but he is expected to be out until at least late July.

Our View:

It doesn't sound like Beltran is improving much, which is terrible news for the injury-plagued Mets. Beltran owners should keep him on the DL, but don't be shocked if we get into August and he still isn't playing.

July 6, 2009

No timetable has been set for Carlos Beltran to begin a rehab assignment, according to MetsBlog.com.

Our View:

Be ready for a long haul with this one. The Mets haven't appeared to handle injuries very well this season, and the always creaky Beltran probably isn't too quick of a healer at age 32. He likely won't be out too terribly long, just longer than you think.

June 30, 2009

Updating a previous report, the New York Daily News is now saying that Carlos Beltran will not need microfracture surgery and that his original diagnosis of a bone bruise was correct.

Our View:

This should come as a huge sigh of relief for the Amazins and Beltran owners, as there was some speculation that he might never be the same player again. He will still be out through the All-Star break, which is longer than originally thought, but should be back soon afterward.

June 30, 2009

Carlos Beltran could require microfracture knee surgery on his balky right knee, according to the New York Post. The surgery could jeopardize his 2009 season, and possibly even his career, were he to have it.

Our View:

The gut punches just keep coming for the New York Mets. The team will surely avoid the procedure, usually reserved for NBA players, at all costs, but that might just mean Beltran coming back and playing through more pain. If you are a Beltran owner, be sure to stay tuned, as the fate as his season will be decided in these next few days.

June 29, 2009

Carlos Beltran is visiting a specialist in Colorado Monday at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic to examine the bone bruise under his right knee, according to Newsday. That is the same facility that Alex Rodriguez underwent his hip surgery.

Our View:

Dr. Richard Steadman is a specialist in micro-fracture surgery, but he or the Mets did not comment that Beltran may need the procedure. The club wants to see how far the star outfielder's injury has progressed.

June 29, 2009

Mets manager Jerry Manuel says the team needs to trade for a "big bat," according to the New York Post.

Our View:

It's hard to argue with the Amazins' skipper. The Mets were outscored 18-3 and swept by the Yankees in embarrassing fashion over the weekend, and have now scored two runs or fewer in four of their last six games, looking completely overmatched in the process.

June 24, 2009

Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman reports that injured Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran is seeking a second opinion on his balky right knee, but that a return to the Mets when he is eligible in two weeks is still very unlikely.

Our View:

The news is getting worse for Beltran owners, as he appears headed for a prolonged stint on the DL. We'll update you as soon as the results from the second opinion are released.

June 23, 2009

Mets GM Omar Minaya told the New York Post on Tuesday that the best case scenario for injured slugger Carlos Beltran would be him returning after the minimum 15 days out. He then rather ominously added, "If we get him back for the second half (after the All-Star Break), I'd sign up for that right now."

Our View:

Doesn't sound like the Mets think Beltran's knee problems are any minor thing. This is just more bad news for the Amazins' and Beltran fantasy owners. Hold your breath that he is activated from the DL when eligible on July 7, but plan for longer.

June 22, 2009

As expected, Carlos Beltran has been placed on the 15-day DL with his bruised right knee, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:

Beltran was unable to play through sharp pain caused by the injury. Fernando Martinez and Jeremy Reed will share the workload in center field while Beltran is on the shelf. GM Omar Minaya hopes Beltran will be ready to return in two weeks.

June 22, 2009

Carlos Beltran is bound for the 15-day DL due to his ailing knee, according to Ed Price's twitter page.

Our View:

Mets' GM Omar Minaya is hopeful that Beltran will only be on the shelf for two weeks. The pain in his knee became too much to play with.

June 21, 2009

Carlos Beltran is slated for an MRI Monday on his ailing knee, and does not believe he can play much more with increased pain, according to MLB.com. He said, "I do not feel I can play a lot of games the way it felt today. I am a little bit worried, to be honest, because the way it was today, it was painful."

Our View:

Beltran may be headed to the DL. He is dealing with a sharp pain that prevents him from running at full speed. Stay tuned for updates on the star outfielder.

June 21, 2009

According to Newsday, Carlos Beltran is in the lineup for Sunday's game despite having to undergo an MRI on Monday.

Our View:

Looks like Beltran's balky knee won't keep him out of action. Be sure to keep him in your lineup, as even though he's been racked with injuries, he's still producing.

June 20, 2009

According to Newsday, Carlos Beltran's knee is still bothering him and the outfielder plans to schedule an MRI in the near future. Beltran states, "I just want to make sure it's not going to get worse. If it can get worse, I want to take care of it."

Our View:

Despite the painful bone bruise, Beltran is in the lineup for Saturday's game. However, he was in a good amount of pain in Friday's game and says that each day is a struggle. Here's hoping he can play through it because the Mets can ill afford another crucial injury to a blue chip player. He can't play through the pain forever though.

June 18, 2009

Carlos Beltran was 2-for-4 with two stolen bases on Thursday, but the Mets still lost 5-4 to the Orioles at Citi Field.

Our View:

Despite his power numbers being down because of the cavernous Citi Field, Beltran is on pace to have his best season yet in 2009 and is a top ten fantasy player in every format.

June 11, 2009

Carlos Beltran was productive in Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Phillies at Citi Field, as he went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI.

Our View:

Beltran has a four-game hitting streak, and continues to lead the Mets with 38 RBI. He accounted for their entire scoring output tonight.

June 4, 2009

After missing three games with a stomach virus (and not swine flu), Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran returned to the lineup on Thursday against the Pirates and went 2-for-4 with a home run.

Our View:

Whatever Beltran had, he appears to be over it and once again a must start every day.

June 3, 2009

Updating a previous report, Carlos Beltran has apparently recovered from his stomach ailment and will return to the lineup Wednesday against the Pirates, according to the New York Post.

Our View:

Beltran is saying the illness was food poisoning, but that doesn't explain how John Maine caught it from him. Still, Beltran appears to be safe to plug back into your lineup. He did however lose five pounds while he was sick, but we don't think it will affect his power stroke.

June 3, 2009

According to SI.com, Carlos Beltran will miss his fourth straight game Wednesday with a bout of the flu. The sickness has been classified as just a case of the stomach flu and Swine flu has been officially ruled out.

Our View:

The Mets were concerned that Beltran and John Maine, who is suffering from the same ailment, had caught Swine flu from a Mets' employee who is being tested for the illness. Apparently no one has it, so breathe easy. Beltran will be replaced once again by Jeremy Reed, but should be back in the lineup soon.

June 2, 2009

The New York Daily News reports that Carlos Beltran will sit out his third straight game tonight because of a stomach virus.

Our View:

This means that Jeremy Reed will again get the start in the ailing Beltran's place. Last night he went 2 for 4 with two doubles.

June 1, 2009

Updating an earlier report, Carlos Beltran will miss his second straight game with a stomach virus, according to the Associated Press. He was previously expected to return tonight.

Our View:

Jeremy Reed will roam in center field in his absence. Beltran should not miss much more time with the illness.

June 1, 2009

MetsBlog.com is reporting that Carlos Beltran will be in the Mets' lineup for their Monday night game against the Pirates. Beltran missed Sunday's game with a stomach virus.

Our View:

Must have been a 24-hour flu thing. Beltran is back and he is hitting third in the order, so fantasy owners need to get him in tonight. He will be facing Ian Snell, who is 1-6 with a 5.43 ERA so far this season. He is a must play.

May 31, 2009

According to the New York Daily News, Carlos Beltran has been scratched from the Mets' lineup on Sunday with a stomach virus. He is being replaced in center field by Angel Pagan.

Our View:

Beltran just can't seem to stay on the field. He has battled injury, and now he is sick, which can wreak havoc on fantasy owners. Get him out if you still have time today, but he should be back soon.

May 30, 2009

Carlos Beltran left Saturday's game against the Marlins with a "stomach bug", according to the WFAN broadcast.

Our View:

Beltran has battled a shin bruise and a knee injury of late, but neither of those seemed to be a factor in his removal today. Hopefully, he has enough time to recover prior to tomorrow's game.

May 29, 2009

The New York Daily News is reporting that Carlos Beltran will return to the Mets' lineup on Friday. Beltran has missed the last two games with a bone bruise in his right tibia.

Our View:

Beltran is not likely 100 percent yet, but fantasy owners should get him into the lineup if possible tonight. Beltran has been outstanding this season, and it looks like he will be back for good as long as he doesn't aggravate the injury.

May 26, 2009

According to Sports Illustrated, Carlos Beltran will be on the bench until Friday with a bruised knee.

Our View:

The MRI revealed a bruise and an inflamed tibia, and the Mets hope that three days of rest will be enough for Beltran to get back in the lineup. This is actually good news for the Mets, because the injury could have been much more serious. Beltran won't be 100 percent when he returns, but some Beltran is better than none. And he is having an fantastic season so far. The Mets need his bat in the lineup. Even if it isn't fully up to snuff.

May 26, 2009

Carlos Beltran is slated for an MRI today on his ailing right knee, according to MetsBlog.com.

Our View:

The knee has been bothering him the last week, and that is why he worked in the DH role at Boston. Beltran was able to roam in center field in Monday's game, and we will keep you posted on his MRI results.

May 25, 2009

Carlos Beltran started in center field in the Mets 5-2 win over the Nationals on Monday. He was 2-for-3 a run scored, an RBI, and a walk in the victory.

Our View:

Beltran saw some time at DH in the weekend series against the Red Sox due to a sore right knee. He has managed at least one hit in each of his last five games despite the ailment.

May 25, 2009

Carlos Beltran deemed himself healthy enough to start in center field for tonight's game against the Nationals at Citi Field, according to the New York Post. He has been nursing a sore right knee.

Our View:

The elite fantasy outfielder should be safe to keep active in fantasy lineups. He is hitting .307 with 19 homers and 65 RBI over 81 career meetings with Washington.

May 22, 2009

MLB.com reports that Carlos Beltran was moved from center field to DH prior to Friday night's game against the Red Sox due to right knee soreness.

Our View:

If the injury was serious, he probably wouldn't be hitting No. 3 in the order as the DH tonight. Hopefully a night off from the field will cure what ails him. Beltran continues to be one of the most complete players in the game.

May 16, 2009

Carlos Beltran went 3-for-5 with two doubles, three runs scored, and three RBI in the Mets' 9-6 win over the Giants on Saturday.

Our View:

Beltran is staying hot, and he seems to get three hits in every game. When Beltran gets hot, he really gets the job done. Don't expect this all season, but you can expect it for most of the season because he is really good.

May 12, 2009

Carlos Beltran was 2-for-4 with a tenth-inning walk off walk on Tuesday as the Mets topped the Braves 4-3 in extras.

Our View:

Beltran doubled and scored in the ninth off Braves closer Mike Gonzalez to tie the game and then worked the walk in the tenth to win it. Quite a game from the red hot fantasy outfielder who is hitting .374.

May 9, 2009

Carlos Beltran went 2-for-5 with a solo homer in Saturday's 10-1 win over Pittsburgh at Citi Field. His other knock was a single.

Our View:

Beltran has six homers, with two coming over his last three games. He has four RBI over that span as well.

May 4, 2009

Carlos Beltran homered twice on Monday as the Mets beat the Braves 6-4. Beltran was 2-for-3 with the two homers and four RBI.

Our View:

Beltran has been one of the hottest hitters so far in 2009, but he had little to show for it in power numbers. This just goes to show you that Beltran is still a top outfield option in all leagues, especially when he is hitting for power like he did tonight.

April 25, 2009

Carlos Beltran continued his hot start to the year by producing three hits five at-bats as he also scored two runs, knocked one in, and stole his first base of the year.

Our View:

Oddly, despite hitting .415 with an OBP above .500, Beltran has only scored seven runs in his first 17 games and today's steal was his first of the year. Still, Beltran is one of the most consistent offensive forces in the game, to you can pretty much lock in the 20 home runs and 20 steals that have become his year calling card.

April 23, 2009

His Mets got swept, but Carlos Beltran continued his hot hitting in the series. He was 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI in the Mets' 12-8 loss to the Cardinals on Thursday.

Our View:

Beltran was 8-for-12 in the series and boosted his average into Ty Cobb territory. He's now hitting .404 on the season with 12 RBI, but has only homered twice and hasn't stolen a base yet. Expect the long balls to pile up eventually and the steals will come with time as well.

April 22, 2009

Carlos Beltran was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI as the Mets fell in St. Louis 5-2 on Wednesday. He was the only batter in their lineup with more than one hit.

Our View:

Beltran is hitting at a .385 clip through 52 at bats this April. However, he has yet to attempt a stolen base.

April 12, 2009

Carlos Beltran went 1-for-4 with an RBI single in Sunday's 2-1 loss at the Marlins.

Our View:

Beltran registered the Mets' lone RBI in the loss, and has a hit in all six games of the season so far.

April 10, 2009

Carlos Beltran was 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in a losing effort as the Mets fell to the Marlins 5-4 on Friday.

Our View:

Beltran had his first extra base hit of the season today and it went over the wall. The Mets are counting on his power to compete in a tough division this season. He remains a top fantasy outfielder.

March 25, 2009

Carlos Beltran went 2-for-3 with an RBI in Wednesday's 10-6 loss to Detroit. He hit a single and a double.

Our View:

He was dealing with a stiff neck, but looks to be fine, evidenced by today's solid outing. He is safe to target as a top-10 fantasy outfielder.

March 23, 2009

Carlos Beltran was scratched from Sunday's lineup with a stiff neck, according to MetsBlog.com.

Our View:

He will not travel with the Mets on Tuesday, but is expected to return to the lineup Wednesday. The ailment appears to be minor.

March 16, 2009

Carlos Beltran was 1-for-1 with three walks, a double, and a stolen base in Puerto Rico's 2-0 loss to Venezuela on Monday.

Our View:

Beltran has now reached base in his last eight plate appearances and he is hitting .500 in the WBC. Reports say that he is having a blast playing for his country, and his jovialness has shown in his production.

March 14, 2009

Carlos Beltran was 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBI, three runs scored, a walk and a stolen base as Puerto Rico whupped Team USA 11-1 on Saturday.

Our View:

It was an encouraging performance from a player who is still holding onto the title of one of the NL's elite outfielders. He is batting .476 while hitting third for Puerto Rico in the WBC.

February 26, 2009

Centerfielder Carlos Beltran hit a home run and drove in three runs Thursday afternoon as the Mets pounded the Marlins 9-0 in a Grapefruit League game.

Our View:

You can't judge much from one exhibition game, but if Beltran and Jose Reyes produce during the regular season the way they did today (driving in all nine Met runs), the New York lineup is going to be scary.

February 17, 2009

Carlos Beltran had some unkind words for Philadelphia starter Cole Hamels today, according to the New York Post. "Well, you know, he made a comment," Beltran said of Hamels upon arriving in camp this morning. "The only thing that I know is that he will be watched every time he faces us and hopefully we kill him. And then he'll have to deal with the situation."

Our View:

Met fans are hoping Beltran improves on his 27 home run, 112 RBI performance from last season. Hopefully distractions like this will not hurt his performance.
