Newsbreakers

September 30, 2009

Javier Vazquez struck out nine Marlins in six innings on Wednesday night, but also allowed five runs in a game the Braves had to have, as Atlanta lost 5-4 at home.

Our View:

It was the seventh time in 32 starts this season that Vazquez had struck out at least nine. For the year, he is now 15-10 with a 2.87 ERA and 238 strikeouts.

September 25, 2009

Javier Vazquez only allowed one earned run on three hits over nine innings in Friday's 4-1 win at Washington. He had one walk and fired seven strikeouts.

Our View:

Vazquez was in control as he earned his 15th win and third complete game of 2009. He collected a win in each of his last four starts, and a homer by Josh Bard prevented him from picking up his first shutout tonight.

September 19, 2009

Javier Vazquez dominated once again on Saturday. He blanked the Phillies for seven innings and surrendered just three hits and three walks, while fanning six. The 6-4 victory gave him his 14th win of the season.

Our View:

Vazquez is virtually unhittable right now. He has allowed just two runs over his last 23 innings, spanning three starts, and has fanned 23 batters in that stretch.

September 17, 2009

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Javier Vazquez, whose name has been mentioned in possible offseason trades, wants to remain with the Braves.

Our View:

If the Braves re-sign Tim Hudson they would have a glut of starting pitchers on their roster for next season and could afford trade Vazquez or Kenshin Kawakami. The thing is, Vazquez is affordable (signed for $11.5 million next season) and was the Braves best pitcher this season with a 3.06 ERA and 216 Ks in 197.1 innings pitched. And the old adage holds true in that you can never have enough pitching. The Braves would be silly to trade him unless they got something very generous in return.

September 14, 2009

Javier Vazquez has been named the NL Player of the Week, according to MLB.com. He went 2-0 with 1.13 ERA over two starts last week, and led the majors with 17 strikeouts.

Our View:

This marks the first time Vazquez has earned the weekly honor in the NL. He topped 200 strikeouts for the third straight season, and the fifth time in his career.
